After getting into the smartphone and tablet markets, some companies that have seen success have decided that they should get into the next best thing: smart watches. This head-first dive strategy was what put companies like Samsung on the map in the first place. But was the dive in vain? Perhaps not. Still, there are a few reasons why we really shouldn’t be browsing for smart watches – at least not until the technology has become more viable.

1: They’re Clumsy

I’m the kind of person who wears a watch for a reason: I want to check what time it is without having to do anything fancy. Unfortunately, smart watches don’t really offer this experience. You have to “unlock” the watch as you would a smartphone. With that kind of impediment, you might as well carry a phone in your pocket and end the story right there. Smart watches are little more than oversimplified versions of smartphones anyway, and some of them even need to be paired to a phone in order to tell what time it is.

On top of all this, some of the watches’ screens have trouble with visibility under sunlight.

If you still like the “real watch” experience, maybe you’d like the Martian Passport Watch (that is, until you’ve discovered how much it costs).

2: They’re Just a Smartphone’s Shadow, Without The Actual Phone

The screen real estate on a smart watch is limited to a very tiny space just above your wrist. Obviously, this means that it won’t be able to do as much as the 4-5-inch phone you carry in your pocket.

Aside from that, there are very few apps that currently have explicit compatibility with smart watches. This isn’t a big deal, though, since this niche market won’t be ignored. App developers will always be in ample supply, so we can expect that smart watches will get some attention in that department.

3: Smart Watch Battery Life Is Nowhere Near What Regular Watches Have

Unless you’ve been living with a mechanical watch all your life, you’d know that many battery-operated watches last at least six months before you replace their batteries. What if I told you that you now have to charge your watch every week? That’s pretty much how life is with smart watches, for the time being.

My suggestion would be to squeeze as much battery life as possible by finding ways of generating power other than through a USB cable. For example, a smart watch could charge itself through your body heat and/or the natural motion of your wrist (like automatic watches do). You could easily squeeze in an extra week of battery life with this and a combination of other battery-saving techniques, like allowing the user to put the watch into a “watch only” mode (like you would if you were going to sleep, or you simply know you won’t use the watch for an extended period of time).

Should You Get a Smart Watch?

After thinking for a long time, if you feel that you need one of these gadgets, go ahead and buy one. But be warned: The technology is at its infancy, and manufacturers have lots to learn about how to appeal to their customers. At this point, there are probably more reasons not to buy smart watches than to buy them. If you’re making this decision, think long and hard about it. Make sure it’s not an impulse purchase. Other than that, I hope this technology will be one you can make use of and enjoy!

Biometrics Not Quite Ready For The Enterprise

Little yellow sticky notes cling to computer screens throughout American

offices, displaying users’ passwords for coworkers, bosses… and

possibly hackers to see.

The passwords, generally as simple as a relative’s birthday or a pet’s

name, have long been too easy to steal, and they’re just not working

anymore, analysts say.

What’s the solution?

Biometrics and smartcards are the best solution, according to industry

watchers. But don’t throw your password away quite yet. For now, just

keep changing it every few months and rip that sticky note off your

monitor because the biometric industry may need up to five years to work

out all of the kinks.

With passwords continuing to become more of an IT security nightmare,

analysts agree something needs to change because too much vital corporate

information is at risk simply because of weak passwords. Analysts are

looking at smartcards, along with biometrics — authentication techniques

that check a person’s physical characteristics, like a fingerprint or

iris pattern — and some behavioral aspects like keystroke patterns.

”The password is becoming obsolete and hackable,” says Mike Miley, vice

president and chief technology officer for Science Applications

International Corporation (SAIC), a research and engineering company

based in San Diego, Calif. ”You never want to rely on any one identity


With passwords wearing out their welcome, biometrics and smartcards are

next in line.

Biometrics are just further down the road. Analysts agree that smartcards

will be more widely utilized in 2005 than biometrics. But they say the

combination of the two identity verification methods will be the most

effective way to access networks in the next five years.

Smartcards the first step

”The (smartcard) industry is a slowly building industry,” says Earl

Perkins, vice president of security strategies with META Group, an

industry analyst firm based in Stamford, Conn. ”Many computer companies

are starting to install contact or contactless readers for smartcards

right into PCs.”

But credit cards, drivers licenses and other forms of ID are lost

everyday. The smartcard holder, however, will have an easier way to get

their card back, quickly.

”You need an easy way to re-enroll or get a new card,” says David

Fisch, a consultant with the International Biometric Group, LLC, a

biometric security consulting and services firm with bases in New York

and London. ”The template takes random parts of the fingerprint and

stores it so the user can easily get a new one.”

This use of multiple forms of identification is the key to securing

privacy, analysts say.

”Combining something you have, something you know and who you are is

much stronger than anything else,” says Miley.

Richard Fleming, chief technology officer and co-founder of Digital

Defense, Inc., a security services firm based in Dallas, says biometrics

are the pinnacle of authentication.

”You are identifying the individual person by the fact that you know

that this is your thumbprint attached to your warm body. It is a step up

and beyond all other authentication methods.”

Miley says the next five years will see a large focus on identity

proofing, using the combined powers of smartcards and biometrics. He says

the cost of installing biometric tools onto PCs is coming down, which is

greatly due to the U.S. government’s interest in the industry.

”The government is dedicated to testing biometrics for large- scale

deployment,” says Miley, noting that the U.S. is interested in using

biometrics in areas such as immigration and Homeland Security.

With the government pouring money into the research and development of

biometrics, analysts say, the technology will become cheaper and more

widely used by the year 2010.

The Financial Angle

A major driver in the deployment of smartcards this year will be money,

according to industry observers.

While a smartcard with a Simchip will cost a company about $10 to $15, a

biometric devise, such as a fingerprint reader, runs at about $80 to $200

per user, Perkins says. ”When you multiply the (biometrics) costs by 10

or 30 employees, it is just not cost effective.”

Fleming says the high cost of biometrics has been prohibitive.

”Biometrics have been increasingly expensive to date,” Fleming says.

”The security component of IT budgets will increase over the next two

years to 18 months, and will continue to increase after that.”

But Fleming says the cost for companies to install biometrics has already

started to decline, and will continue in the same direction.

Fleming says the biggest challenges for biometrics at this point remain

in infrastructure and levels of standardization.

”People may not want to buy another devise and install it onto their

computer,” Fleming says. ”The industry will have to agree on what kind

of technology to deploy. If users don’t know what to use and when, they

may just decide to do without.”

Miley says while there will always be privacy concerns, the ability to

use biometrics as protection will become commonplace.

”There are lots of efforts now to use biometrics as a way to protect

one’s privacy, not as an invasion of privacy,” Miley says. ”In five

years, we will see biometrics as a primary component of security

There you are, sitting on your office chair. Feeling comfortable and good about yourself. Let me tell you something. You are lost. You are a nobody. Why? The second reason why you need to switch to a mechanical keyboard is ergonomics. Mechanical keyboards generally have higher quality keycaps which are rounded to let your fingers rest on them more comfortably. Traditional laptop keys, with the exception of Lenovo’s, are flat. Flat keys are good for space-saving designs but you not only lose precision, but also comfort. I find flat keys uncomfortable to type on for long periods because I have to hit them “head on” in order not to make an error. Also, it is very easy to hit these keycaps on the corners which will cause your fingers to slip and mis-type. If you hit the corner of a keycap on a mechanical keyboard, you still have a good chance of registering the input. The longer “throw” of mechanical keyboards are also more comfortable for long typing sessions compared to the short engagement point of chicklet-style keyboards. For a long time, I thought the main attribute of an ergonomic keyboard is shape. After using the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic keyboard for 2-3 years and using my Leopold Tenkeyless for about 5 months, I realize that it’s not about the shape. The main reason mechanical keyboards are better is the key switches.

The third benefit is reduced strain. I realize this is closely related to comfort but I felt that this deserved its own section simply because of RSI(Repetitive Strain Injury). We use our computers for hours and some of us do not take RSI seriously. I take good care of my hands. And so should you. For most people, their hands are their livelihood. Hand health is very important if you are a musician, laborer, or athlete. One thing I’ve notice after spending a few months with my mechanical keyboard compared to keyboards of my past is finger pain. I use to get finger pain after prolonged typing on the rubber dome keys. They were all I knew so I didn’t question. It wasn’t until I was in the market for a better keyboard where I found out about mechanical key switches. Subsequently, it wasn’t until I was typing on them for hours until I realized my finger pain was mainly caused by the cheap rubber-dome keyboards. If you are on the computer for hours, or if your profession involves extensive amounts of typing, consider investing on a mechanical keyboard for this very reason. These key switches will reduce finger strain. Your hands will thank you.

The fourth benefit of using a mechanical keyboard is improved speed. A more precise, comfortable keyboard means improved typing speed. I was never a speed typist. Barely being able to type 25 WPM, after a few months of serious training, I can now type 60-70 WPM. Your mileage may vary but you will improve your speed. If not in burst typing, definitely in endurance typing. That’s typing long essays or reports. Wiki has the average typing speed rated at 33 WPM. If you are over this, you are doing very well.

The last and most important reason why you need a mechanical keyboard? They’re fun! That may sound silly to say but after getting one, I now enjoy typing. I like the sound of these Cherry MX browns. Some people like the blues. You can’t go wrong either way. They’re great to type on. Mechanical keyboards have their own unique personalities. From the simple Leopold Tenkeyless to the highly sought after HHKB Pro 2. Typing shouldn’t be a chore. Most people probably won’t be competing on typeracer for leisure, but mechanical keyboards will make you smile. It’s like buying a luxury car. Sure, you don’t NEED leather heated seat with power everything but if you can afford it, why not treat yourself? Especially a tool that you will spend years using. Google (probably accidentally) leaked some details of the Nexus Q before today’s I/O event even started. It’s a streaming…I almost said box, but it’s actually more like an orb. It’s somewhere between a Sonos system, which streams music to stations in different parts of your house, and an Apple TV, which streams music and video to your TV. And I think it’s very exciting. Here’s why.


NFC, or near-field communication (check out our primer if you’re not sure what this is) is becoming more and more common–the new Samsung Galaxy S III uses it really well, and the next-generation iPhone is heavily rumored to have it as well. NFC could be used to easily pair your phone with your set-top box. Airplay, Apple’s protocol (man, that word makes it sound scarier than it is) is easy to use: you’re playing a video or song on your iPhone or iPad or Mac, you press a button, and it shows up on your TV. But you still have to login to the same Wi-Fi network (“what’s your password? Is that all lowercase?”). One of NFC’s nicest, simplest features is automatic pairing: tap your phone to a device, and it’ll trigger Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and automatically connect. No more messing with settings or menus: if you have guests over who want to control the music, they can just tap their phones on the Nexus Q to connect. Easy.


I love Airplay, but one thing Apple has never been great at is on-the-fly playlists (though there are aftermarket alternatives). You don’t always want to create a new playlist and save it for eternity as a neo-mixtape work of art. Sometimes you just want to hear this song after this song, and then this song after that. The Nexus Q gets it. At a party, which is one of my favorite uses for Airplay, you can have a truly collaborative, unique playlist. Anyone can tap their phone to the Nexus Q, then add their favorite song to the playlist, or rearrange it, right there, on the fly. Awesome.


Home automation is still in its infant stages, and we’ve been wondering for a year where Google’s Android@Home initiative went–announced exactly one year ago at 2011’s I/O conference, it promised to link up your entire home so you could control it with your smartphone. It then vanished. But the Nexus Q is the first product in the Android@Home field, and it’s a great start. Today, your media. Tomorrow, your refrigerator.


I am not of the opinion that all hardware should be used and not seen. I’m not in favor of garishness either, but I think gadgets should be allowed to look cool and different. The Nexus Q looks pretty different! It’s an orb, bisected with a glowing blue ring that pulses with the beat of your music (hopefully you can turn that off. That’s a little much.). You twist the entire top half of the orb to change the volume. I think it looks cool! Cool and weird!

Of course, there are some things about it that I don’t like. It’s too expensive, for sure. At $300, it’s twice as much as a Boxee Box, three times as much as an Apple TV and three times as much as a top-of-the-line Roku. I suppose you could argue that it includes an internal amp, saving you the cost of buying one, but it’s a fairly low-powered amp and you can get a surprisingly decent one of those for $30.

It also seems to only support Android. That’s a terrible choice! I mean, yes, Airplay only supports iOS for mobile, but that’s also a terrible choice, and Google is supposed to be the company that embraces openness. And I’m not sure how it’ll be with streaming different files–does it work with Rdio or Spotify? Does it stream downloaded video? Does it have Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon on Demand? But I think it’s promising, and I’m hoping Google can take these cool elements and make them into a whole that really works. It’ll be available for pre-order today, and will ship in a couple of weeks.
