10 Questions To Ask When Onboarding A New Seo Content Client

As an SEO content writer, I interact with tons of businesses that have varying degrees of experience and preparation when it comes to their SEO content strategy.

Some brands have well-researched buyer personas and a mountain of keyword research at the ready while others have no blogging strategy at all and no clear idea of who their target audience is.

Not that those in the latter category are “wrong” – as SEO professionals, it’s our job to dig into the data and create optimized content that will speak to their target audience.

That means our job is made easier by having a clear client onboarding process that helps us gain a better understanding of their business and the types of people they are trying to reach.

What follows are 10 questions I ask while onboarding SEO content clients to help me write SEO-friendly and audience-focused content tailored to each brand.

1. ‘How Do You Describe the Business to Someone Unfamiliar With the Company?’

This question gives clients a chance to explain, in their own words, what their business does.

For some brands, this answer may be straightforward.

For others, this is more complicated and warrants an explanation in “layman terms”.

Consider that a brand’s target audience is usually approaching the brand’s content at a lower level of experience and understanding.

Using “marketing-ese” or “industry-ese” to explain what a business does can leave many prospective customers confused.

This question helps you and your client define what the business does in the simplest of terms.

2. ‘What Is Your Brand’s Mission?’

Some brands might have a well thought out mission statement while others may have no mission statement at all.

It’s worth asking this question because if they do have a mission statement, you’ll likely end up referencing this at some point in their SEO content.

It also gives the client a chance to think about creating a mission statement, which can be a beneficial asset to their brand in terms of defining what makes them unique.

This works to help the brand – and their content – stand out from the competition.

3. ‘What Key Taglines, Words, or Phrases Are Used and Associated With This Brand?’

Every brand has its own “isms” that make them different from other brands. There may be words or phrases they use that add character to their content.

As an SEO content creator, you’ll want to learn what these “isms” are so you can use them throughout their content.

4. ‘What Are Some Things You Don’t Say in Your Company?’

Similarly, there will be some phrases that your client doesn’t say.

Often times, this is because they don’t want to be associated with certain terms (like “cheap” or “affordable”), are trying to set themselves apart from the competition (“marketing consultants” vs. “marketing agency”), or want to weed out a certain type of audience (general web development vs. “WordPress web development”).

At the same time, there may be some terms that you, as a marketer, are unfamiliar with and don’t want to use incorrectly in their content.

Since you want your client to be seen as an authority in their niche, you should rely on your client to tell you which terms to use and which ones to avoid.

5. ‘What Is the Purpose of This Content?’

The answer to this question may seem obvious (“Higher rankings and more traffic, of course!”) but this isn’t always the case.

Never assume what your client’s goals are because they may surprise you, and this can certainly influence your content strategy.

If I had focused on rankings, I would have missed the mark when it comes to what my clients are really trying to achieve with their content.

6. ‘What Is Your Unique Selling Proposition (USP)? What Sets You Apart From Your Competitors?’

You’d be surprised how many businesses don’t have an answer to this question.

Which is why asking it is so important.

If a brand can’t define what makes them stand out from their competition, it will be hard for you, as an SEO content specialist, to create content that sells prospective customers on what your client brings to the table.

Many brands will answer with statements like “We have 10+ years of experience” or “We are a family-owned company” but these aren’t particularly compelling.

See if you can uncover what makes your client truly unique and how that relates to what their target audience is looking for.

7. ‘What Products/Services Do You Offer? Please Provide a Description of Each.’

Many SEO content writers and specialists are guilty of writing off-the-cuff without thoroughly understanding what a brand has to offer or what their products are.

Not only can this be frustrating to the client but it can be confusing to their prospective customers.

In asking this question, you again give your clients a chance to explain their offer in their own words.

This will help you know:

What keywords to target in relation to their offer(s).

How to write in a way that highlights their unique benefits and features for their audience.

8. ‘Who Is the Focus Audience and What Are They Like?’

Again, don’t assume to know who their target audience is.

Always ask them.

Their ideal customer may be very different from what you have in mind or even from what their content seems to indicate on their website.

Most often, clients are seeking you out because they want to improve their content, so their existing content may not be a good indication of what their business does or who they are targeting.

So, be sure to ask your client who they want to reach, asking them to be as descriptive as possible.

9. ‘What Is the Problem the Audience Is Facing and How Does This Content Present a Solution to This Problem?

Just as your client has goals when it comes to their content, their own audience has goals when it comes to seeking out that content.

While you may be focusing on improving your client’s rankings, traffic, etc., you should try to uncover what it is that their target audience intends to find when searching for and reading that content.

Your client should be able to tell you what their audience’s primary pain points and goals are so you can work these into the SEO content.

This will help you write content that’s suited to the user (think: search intent) and provides information that’s going to compel a visitor to convert into a customer.

10. ‘What Kinds of Conversions Are We Trying to Make Through the Content (e.g., ‘Free Consultation’, Contact Form, Visit a Product Page, Etc.)?’

Many SEO content creators get lazy with this and just assume that they should direct users to the main Contact page or to schedule a free consultation, but that’s not always the case either.

Your client may have a certain conversion point, lead magnet, product, or service in mind.

When you know what the end goal is, you’ll be better prepared to work this into the content.

So, if for example, they want readers to be directed to their “10 Secrets of Digital Marketing” ebook, you can “warm” readers up by alluding to the unknown digital marketing strategies and why they need them, rather than simply linking to the client’s Contact page.

Additional Questions to Ask When Onboarding a New Content Client

As an SEO content writer myself, I have an SEO content client questionnaire which includes over 20 questions which help me get a better understanding of my client’s brand, audience, and goals.

If you plan on creating an onboarding process for your own company, I recommend adding to these questions over time, tailoring them to the needs of your unique clients.

That said, here are a few additional questions you might want to include in your onboarding process:

“What keywords would you like for your company to rank for?”

“What’s 1 story that serves as a good representation of your brand?”

“Who are your top 3 competitors?”

“In a perfect world, what would your ideal client/customer/reader be like?“

If you truly want to create on-brand, audience-focused content for your clients, you need to know their brand and understand their target audience.

One of the easiest ways to do this is to work these questions into your onboarding process so you can create their best SEO content ever.

With all this potential, it’s no wonder the intent marketplace has exploded in recent months. Providers of external intent data include mature online media companies such as TechTarget as well as startups like Bombora, The Big Willow, MRP/Prelytix and others.

But intent data is not without its share of gotchas, which may require a huge leap of faith on your part when investing in lists of accounts these providers claim are heating up. When deciding whether to buy from any of these vendors, make sure to ask tough questions and push for maximum transparency.

Example: Acme Corp.

Let’s say an external intent data provider is telling you “Acme Corp.” is showing strong or increased intent activity around Flash Storage solutions. Ask them these questions:

Question 1: “You say Acme is investigating Flash Storage. How do you know it’s Acme?”

Challenge: For intent data to be useful you have to be confident the provider has accurately identified who’s truly behind the activity. Many providers rely on reverse IP lookup to identify “active” companies. That’s problematic because IP lookup can only resolve a fraction of IP addresses into accurate domain names, and even fewer outside of North America. Moreover, since IP addresses tend to change often, IP mapping tools easily go out of date, further undermining accuracy. In the end, the impact of all this is wasted spend, wasted effort and squandered internal momentum.

Recommendation: Look for providers who offer techniques beyond IP lookup for identifying accounts, such as direct user input into registration forms.

Question 2: “How do you know Acme’s interested in Flash Storage?”

Challenge: Since this data is being used to pinpoint real purchase intent, you also need to trust that the content used to produce the activity is actually related to your solution. Many providers “crawl the Web” searching for content with keyword tags associated to the market segment you specified (Flash Storage). When their machines locate such content, they’ll then do IP lookups on the accounts visiting the associated pages.

This all sounds super cool – machines finding relevant material for us all across the Web’s great blue ocean – until you consider that across the entire Web there simply isn’t that much highly focused, in-depth content on topics like Flash Storage, and even less that shows up high enough on search engines to drive material traffic volumes.

Recommendation: Ask providers for a specific understanding of the content sources (Web sites, Social Networks) they’re using to derive intent in your market area. Beware of solutions that don’t reveal the source of the content and user/account activity – it’s a warning sign they may be associating intent where none actually exists.

Question 3: “Who at Acme Corp. is investigating Flash Storage?”

Challenge: Assuming you can get to a place of confidence about the provider’s account list, think through how you want to leverage this data. A list of active accounts without named contacts restricts its usefulness to volume-oriented marketing activities like programmatic ad targeting. And while gains in ad performance are a good thing, for external intent data to deliver dramatic results it needs to have deeper, down-funnel applications. For that you need a corresponding list of the individual contacts — and not just any contacts, but those in tech decision roles with recent activity or expressed interest. (Of course, these contacts must also have opted in to being contacted by you!).

Recommendation: Ask the provider if they provide contact lists for the accounts they identify as active/in market. If they do, ask them the source of the contacts, and whether those contacts are “just names” or whether they are the actual people who generated the intent signals in the first place.

Bagging is a famous ensemble technique in the field of machine learning which is widely used for its performance and better results. It is one of the most important and high-performing ensemble techniques, which is easy to use and accurate. Due to the rich performance on even weak machine learning algorithms, It has become a popular ensemble technique and is being compared with other strong machine learning algorithms.

Most machine learning interviews frequently asked interview questions related to bagging algorithms. This article will discuss the top interview questions on bagging, which are mostly asked in machine-learning interviews. Practicing these questions will help one understand the concept of bagging very deeply and help answer the interview questions related to it very efficiently.

1. What is Bagging and How Does it Work? Explain it with Examples.

Bagging stands for Bootstarp Aggregation. Bootstrapping generally means randomly selecting a sample from a dataset, and aggregations stand for the further procedure and preprocessing of the selected samples. So in the bagging, we generally take multiple machine learning models of the same algorithm, meaning that we only take the same machine learning algorithm multiple times.

For example, if we are using SVM as a base algorithm and the count of the models is 5 then all the models will be of SVM only. Once the base model is decided, there will be a bootstrapping process where the random samples from the dataset will be selected and fed to the machine learning model.

The data will be fed to the models by bootstrapping, and there will be separate training for every model. Once all the models are trained, then there will be a prediction phase where all the different models will predict individually, and as a step of aggregation, we can apply any method to the multiple prediction data as there will be 5 different predictions from every model. The common approach is to calculate the mean of the predictions in case of regression or consider the majority count of it in case of classification.

2. How is Bagging Different from the Random Forest Algorithm?

The very basic difference between bagging and the random forest is related to the base models. In bagging, the base model can be any machine learning algorithm, and there is an option of selecting any machine learning algorithm as the base model in bagging by using the base_estimator parameter.

In the random forest, the base estimator or the base models are always decision trees, and other is not any option of selecting any other machine learning algorithms as base estimators in random forest.

Another difference between bagging and the random forest is that in bagging, all the features are selected for the training of the base models, whereas in the random forest, only a subset of the features are selected for the base model training, and out of that only the best performing are chosen as final features.

3. What is the Difference Between Bootstrapping and Pasting in Bagging?

The main difference between bootstrapping and pasting is in the data sampling. As we know, in bagging, there is a sampling of the main dataset, It could be row or column sampling, out of which samples of the dataset are provided to the base models for training.

In bagging or bootstrapping, the samples are taken from the main dataset and fed to the first model, now the same samples can be again used for the training of any other method;, here, the sampling will be with replacement.

In pasting, there is a sample taken from the main dataset, but once the samples are used for training any model, the sawm samples will not be used again for the training of any other model. So here, the sampling is done without replacement.

4. Why does Bagging Performs Well on the Low Bias High Variance Datasets?

In general, low bias high variance datasets are the data that have a very good performance on the training data and poor performance on the testing data, the case of overfitting. The data prone to overfit on any model is preferred for bagging algorithms as bagging reduces the variance of the dataset. Now let’s suppose we have a dataset which is having a very high variance. Suppose we have 10000 rows in our data from which 100 samples have a high variance; now, if this data is fed to any other algorithm, the algorithm will perform poorly as these 100 samples will affect the training, but in the case of bagging, there will be multiple models of the same algorithm, so there will not be a case where all the 100 rows will be fed to the same model due to bootstrapping or sampling of the chúng tôi here now every model will experience the same weightage of the variance in the dataset, and in the end, the high variance of the dataset will not affect the final predictions of the model.

5. What is the Difference between Bagging and Boosting? Which is Better?

In the bagging algorithms, the main dataset is sampled in the parts, and the same multiple base models are used for training with different samples. In the final stage of aggregation, the output from every single base model will be considered, and the final output can be a mean or most frequent term from all models trained. It is also known as parallel learning, as all weak learners learn at the same time. Boosting is generally a stagewise addition method, where multiple weak learners are trained, and all the models are of the same machine learning algorithm. The errors and the mistake from the previously trained weak learner are considered to avoid the same errors in the further training of the next weak learner. It is also known as sequential learning, as the weak learner learns in sequence with each other.

We can not say which algorithm will perform better all the way, but generally, bagging is preferred when there is a low bias and high variance in the dataset (overfitting), whereas boosting is preferred in the case of a high bias and low variance dataset (underfitting).
