Mobile World Congress: Will The Windows Ecosystem Be Relevant In Barcelona?
It’s still an iPhone and Android world, but at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next Monday, expect Microsoft’s Windows and Windows Phone platforms to show some intriguing signs of life.
There won’t be a lot of huge phone and tablet announcements at the show, and Microsoft’s own presence will be dialed back compared to previous years. Nonetheless, we might see some interesting new developments—especially if key rumors pan out.
Here’s a breakdown of all the speculation and concrete details concerning Windows 8/RT and Windows Phone hardware heading into next week’s event.
What little we know for sureExpect AMD to show off its new Turbo Dock technology.
The big official news ahead of the show is that AMD will demonstrate a new Turbo Dock technology for future Windows 8 hybrids. Unlike existing keyboard and trackpad docks—which merely add battery life to whatever devices they’re connected to—Turbo Dock can crank up CPU and GPU performance by up to 40 percent, and it also provides an option for extra storage. It’s unclear, however, if PC makers will announce any actual products with this technology at MWC.
We also know that LG will show off a Windows 8 hybrid called the Tab-Book, which includes a keyboard that slides out from behind its multitouch screen. Still, LG has held off on most of the details, saying only that the hardware boasts an Intel Core i5 processor and an IPS display. The Tab Book launches this week in Korea, but there’s no word on additional availability.
Rumors and speculation aboundThe rumor mill is where things get interesting. In the run-up to MWC, we’ve seen reports of a Nokia Windows Phone with true PureView camera technology and a Nokia tablet running Windows RT. There’s also been talk of a 7.7 mm-thin Windows Phone from Huawei called the Ascend W2. It’s rumored to pack a 4.5-inch display and a sizeable 2,800 mAh battery, and we could see a 6.1-inch Huawei Windows Phone phablet as well.
Just don’t expect all those rumors to pan out. Strategy Analytics performed “extensive channel checks” this week, and believes that Nokia will hold off on announcing a Windows RT tablet. Neil Mawston, Strategy Analytics’ executive director of global wireless practice, thinks the company is better off solidifying its position in smartphones first.
“It’s a question of timing, I think,” Mawston said in an interview. “Nokia doesn’t want to move into tablets too soon, especially if you look back at the Nokia netbook that it launched three years ago. That sank without a trace and sold very small volumes, so any move into the computing market for Nokia will not be taken lightly.”
The Lumia 920 hasn’t set the world on fire, so maybe Nokia should keep its focus on smartphones before getting distracted by tablets.
With that in mind, a new PureView Windows Phone smartphone seems like a possibility. Rumors have claimed that the phone would have a huge megapixel count, allowing users to zoom and crop photos without sacrificing image quality—much like the PureView Symbian handset that debuted at last year’s MWC. Analysts say the new tech could make a big splash at the show.
Greengart notes that smartphone makers such as HTC, Samsung, and Blackberry have followed Apple’s footsteps in holding their own press events for new smartphones, eschewing announcements at trade shows. This leaves room for a company like Nokia to fill the void.
Aside from a small number of potentially juicy announcements, the analysts I spoke with expect a focus on low-cost handsets, especially for emerging markets. This makes sense, considering that there’s no new version of Windows Phone to leverage, and therefore no built-in support for 1080p screens, which are popping up in most high-end Android handsets now.
Microsoft’s presence fadesMicrosoft used to make its presence felt at MWC. Two years ago, CEO Steve Ballmer gave a keynote speech that included details on Windows Phone 7.5. Last year, the company held a press event to announce the Windows 8 Consumer Preview.
This time around, Microsoft is scaling back. The company won’t have an official booth like the one pictured below. It’s also forgoing a keynote, and merely plans to meet with industry partners and update the press on recent announcements.
In 2012, Microsoft had a full-on booth presence at Mobile World Congress to show off the then still strange and unknown Windows 8.
Some second-guessing of this strategy is inevitable. “Microsoft could have easily used this as an opportunity, not to announce, but more to set out what their vision is for Windows, and to keep hammering that same message again and again,” said Chetan Sharma, a technology and strategy consultant. He thinks a keynote would have been helpful to drive home its multiscreen vision of computing. “To that extent, I think they’ve missed an opportunity,” he said.
Avi Greengart with Current Analysis also thinks Microsoft could use a show like MWC to showcase Windows Phone and Windows apps, addressing the common complaint that Microsoft’s ecosystems are lacking in software. “If they have partners who are creating Windows 8 apps that are unique, this would be a great place to highlight them,” Greengart said.
Keep in mind, though, that the industry’s major players are moving away from trade shows as a way to drum up people’s attention. Google also plans to tone down its own presence at MWC, as it looks to build up the Nexus brand through separate events. And let’s not forget that Google just announced its Chromebook Pixel on Thursday in an intimate event in San Francisco.
Microsoft recently gave up its booth and stopped giving a keynote at CES in January. Though it would be exciting to see Windows and Windows Phone come out swinging with a slew of new devices, running unique software, Microsoft clearly wants to save that for a time when it can hog the spotlight.
In other words, don’t look to MWC as a sign of what’s to come for Windows 8, Windows RT, and Windows Phone, but more of a pulse of where things are right now.
How Leaders Can Stay Relevant In An Ai World

There has been continuous technology driven disruption throughout history from steam power, combustion engines, through to the PC, www and e-commerce. Therefore, it’s no surprise Generative AI technologies like Open AI’s “ChatGPT”, Google’s “Bard” and Meta’s “LLaMA” are all trying to find industries they can disrupt. However, no matter how radical or innovative a new technology is, it still needs humans to discover how the tools can solve problems and unlock value with a scalable, profitable, viable and desirable business model. In some ways technological disruption was the antecedent of the MBA. In 1908 Harvard University created the first MBA in response to a quickly globalizing and industrializing world to teach technical experts how to manage businesses.
New AI systems rapidly assemble and synthesise global knowledge (big data) on any and every given topic with unprecedented speed and reasonable accuracy. The magic is their ability to present it in a new and unique form of words, numbers, images, and pictures including algorithms, code, slides, poems, and 3D models. In some ways it is democratising knowledge, levelling the playing field by making it accessible and consumable by anyone.
When technological disruption happens there are always winners and losers. Organisations will prosper by exploiting the confluence of big data and thick data faster than competitors. This is the focus of the UQ MBA, where business skills are leveraged to understand and solve complex problems and create new value. In fact, the UQMBA Entrepreneurship Capstone recently won first prize for Innovation in Business Education in a prestigious international competition for its approach to teaching innovation and entrepreneurship.
Gen AI makes sense of what humanity already knows, where we have been, where we are now and perhaps where we are going. It’s a powerful tool to learn where to go fishing for unresolved problems and unrealise value. However, it doesn’t tell us how to catch the elusive fish. That takes deep understanding of the fish and the context of the fishing spot. AI can’t explain or even predict with much accuracy, why things that should work, don’t and why things that shouldn’t work, do! This comes from thick data, deep human understanding of customers’ hopes, fears, dreams, irrationalities, biases, rituals, and latent aspirations.

So, what can leaders do to thrive in this decade of disruption:
1: GO BIG – Find ways to use new AI tools to assemble, synthesis and present big data to make sure you know more than everyone else about the context in which you operate. You will be surprised what Gen AI tools can tell you about your customers and competitors. This will ensure you’re fishing for new opportunities in the right place. But knowledge is not enough with most organisations not using the data they already have; more is not always better!
3. GO DEEP – Companies need staff that can build empathy with humans’ hopes, dreams, aspirations, and fears to be able to deliver products, services and business models their customers will love. Steve Jobs did this by working out humans wanted phones to entertain and communicate. Elon Musk’s success came by working out wealthy male US car buyers, at least initially, wanted EV’s to be fast and cool; vis a vie Toyota Prius! Only when empathy is gained, can organisations improve the success rate of their new products and services.

5 Alternative (And Easier) Ways To Unlock Your Android Phone
There has to be an easier way for your Android phone to know it’s you besides a passcode, a PIN, or a pattern lock, right? A fingerprint reader is a good start, but they still have a way of failing even when you swipe your fingertip perfectly on the sensor, thus returning you to the need to enter a PIN or swipe pattern to unlock your own device.
The good news is that Android boasts a series of clever ways of unlocking your device without passcodes, patterns, or fingertip swipes. For example, the latest Android handsets can keep themselves unlocked while they’re riding in your pocket. You can also set Android to recognize your face, or your voice. Last but not least, your Android phone can unlock itself whenever you’re home, at work, or near a “trusted” device, like your Bluetooth car radio or an NFC sticker.
Note: I tested the following settings on a Nexus 5X running on Android version 7.1.2; the settings on your handset may differ depending on its make and model, or the version of Android you have installed.
Keep your phone unlocked while it’s in your pocketYou were just tapping on your Android phone a minute ago, you slipped it back in your pocket or in your purse, and now you need your phone for one more thing. You pull out your handset, and ugh—you need to unlock it yet again.
Ben Patterson
Android’s “on-body detection” feature will keep your phone unlocked while it’s riding in your pocket, a purse, or anytime when it’s on you.
You can save yourself the trouble of unlocking your Android phone when it’s never left your side by setting your handset to stay unlocked whenever it’s on you. Basically, that means that if your Android device (with help from its motion detectors) senses that it’s in your pocket, riding in your purse, or otherwise in your possession, it’ll leave its screen unlocked. Once you put your phone down on, say, a countertop or a side table, Android will lock down everything after a minute or so.
Note: In case you’re wondering: Yes, the on-body detection setting could leave your phone vulnerable to a thief who grabs your phone out of your hand, or a pickpocket who lifts your handset from your purse. Indeed, most of the “smart lock” settings I’m about to cover have their own pitfalls and vulnerabilities, so if you’re really paranoid about security, you might want to stick with a PIN, a passcode, or touch ID.
Keep your phone unlocked at home, at work, or near another specific placeThere’s no place like home—and, hopefully, there’s no place as safe as home, either. If you’re confident your phone can remain safely unlocked while you’re inside your four walls, there’s a “smart lock” setting you should try. Ben Patterson
You can set your Android phone to keep itself unlocked while you’re at home, work, or near another location.
Once you’ve picked one or more “trusted” places, your Android phone will stay unlocked whenever you’re within a city block or so of the addresses you’ve selected—pretty handy if you’re living alone or you work at an office with trustworthy colleagues. Then again, if you’re sharing space with a curious toddler or your office culture is akin to Game of Thrones, Android’s “trusted places” feature might not be for you.
Bonus tip: Generally speaking, I recommend only enabling one “smart lock” setting at a time; turning them all on at once might leave your phone a tad too vulnerable for comfort.
Keep your phone unlocked near a ‘trusted’ deviceIf leaving your Android handset unlocked within a block of your home sounds like too big of an area, there’s a clever way to considerably narrow that range. Ben Patterson
You can designate anything from a Bluetooth speaker to an NFC sticker as a “trusted” device for Android’s “smart lock” feature.
If 30 yards still sounds like too large an area in which to keep your phone unlocked, you can zoom in even further by using an NFC sticker as your “trusted” device. NFC (short for “near field communications”) signals only have a range of about 20 centimeters, meaning your phone would instantly lock itself once it wandered less than a foot from a “trusted” NFC sticker. Since NFC stickers are relatively cheap (you can get a 10-pack for about $12 or so), you could affordably put multiple stickers around the house—like, say, near your PC, on your bedside table, or anywhere else you regularly place your phone.
Unlock your phone with your faceSo far, the “smart lock” methods we’ve covered only use circumstantial evidence—like proximity to your home address, or the motion of riding in a pocket—to deduce that you’re you. But here’s the first of two “smart lock” modes that actually try to identify you, in this case by looking with the camera lens and matching your face with a previously scanned-in portrait. Ben Patterson
Android’s “trusted face” feature will work better if you take multiple scans of your mug.
Once that’s done, lock your phone, face the screen and press the “wake” button—and if all goes well, your Android phone should recognize you and unlock itself.
Unlock your phone with your voiceAnother way your Android phone can recognize you is by listening rather than looking. Specifically, you can set your phone to listen for the sound of your voice.
Ben Patterson
Once your Android phone knows your voice, you can say “OK Google” to unlock your handset without even touching it.
All set? Lock your phone, then say “OK Google.” A “Listening…” prompt will appear on the screen; you can either go ahead and say a voice command, or tap to dismiss the prompt and swipe up to jump to the home screen.

5 Ways To Escape Website Tracking On Android And Iphone
Related: What is Brave Shields- How Does it Work? Turn it On or Off
You can escape trackers on your android smartphone by several methods. This includes using privacy-focused browsers or tweaking settings on your existing browser. Read on.
Firefox is quite a popular choice of browser among users across the world, and it is worth noting that it comes with options to enhance your privacy by helping you escape trackers on your mobile browser.
Step 3: Turn on the toggle for Enhanced Tracking Protection.
Step 4: Turn on the toggle for Off, so that you enable this setting. This will block all requests that are included as a part of your browsing traffic, and ensure tracking is disabled and your data is not collected by websites.
To escape trackers on mobile browsers, it is highly recommended to use a browser like DuckDuckGo, albeit you might lose out on features offered by browsers like Chrome, Brave, etc.
Step 1: Open DuckDuckGo, tap the three dots menu on the top right corner.
Step 4: Turn on the Toggle for Global Privacy Control – (GPC). This ensures that DuckDuckGo disables trackers and enhances your privacy online.
Recently, DuckDuckGo also introduced an App Tracking feature on its browser, which is a very simple way to block trackers around your apps. Trackers inside apps are a major hindrance to maintaining your privacy on your phone as they constantly collect data related to your app usage, which can also include your personal data.
Once you enable App Tracking Protection, DuckDuckGo will detect when and how your Android apps are about to send data to third-party tracking companies found in their tracker list, and effectively blocks those requests.
While this is quite a unique and interesting feature, it is currently under testing, and here’s how you can request an invite to access this feature.
Right from the start, Safari has been a privacy-focused browser that prioritizes a safe browsing experience for users. Enabling these additional options only takes it a step further by providing transparent data to users.
Here’s how you can disable and escape website tracking in Safari on iPhone and iPad.
Step 2: Select the Safari option to access the relevant settings.
Step 3: Enable the toggles next to Prevent Cross-Site Tracking, Block All Cookies, and Fraudulent Website Warning.
These options will help prevent trackers in Safari and ensure you have a privacy-focused browsing experience.
Step 4: Open Safari and access the website you want to check the Privacy Report for.
Step 6: Tap on Privacy Report.
Step 7: You will now see an elaborate report from the last 30 days detailing several privacy parameters.
This report includes the number of trackers prevented in the last 30 days along with the percentage of websites that contacted trackers. You will also get a glimpse of the most contacted tracker by the websites you visit.
There’s a graph displayed below that arranges the websites in descending order of trackers used along with a graph for visual indication. Switching to the Trackers tab will display the same information but will list the tracker names instead of websites.
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your phone.
Step 4: Turn on the toggle for Opt out of Ads Personalisation.
It is always a good practice to disable trackers on your web browser, for the sake of enhancing your privacy online. We hope this guide helped you escape website tracking in mobile browsers on your Android and iPhone. Stay tuned for more such guides to enhance privacy while browsing the web.
