Suggested January 2024 Add Cool Visual Effects To Your Video Chats With Altercam
Sponsored: If your video chat gets overly boring, you may want to add visual effects to brighten the mood. AlterCam is a lightweight webcam software that can add brilliant live video effects, including overlays and borders, to your video chats. Here is our review of how useful this software can be.
Download and InstallationThe software is available through a free (tiny) download directly from the homepage. Currently, AlterCam only supports Windows desktop, notebook, and laptop systems, but the company has assured us of macOS support in the future. The installation is easy and a non-intrusive design is helpful: it won’t replace the existing webcam drivers on your PC. After you make a purchase, the code can be activated from the “About” section.
Visual Effect Features of AlterCamUpon installation, AlterCam gets straight down to business capturing the webcam feed from your Windows computer. The navigation is very easy yet detailed. You can add any colors and borders to your background and also add an image or video file behind you. Whether you wish for exotic scenery or a happening party, someone on the other end may even believe it for a while!
You can add a whole bunch of overlays, including Santa Claus, ghostly skull, curtains, penguin, heart shape, and many more.
If you’re not satisfied with your room’s lighting, there are many effects which may make you look great on camera. Some effects in the selection are so subtle that no one can tell the difference. Then there are a few funky effects such as stained glass, camera shake, and quad mirror. Of course, these should only be used very occasionally.
All the effects can be combined for an intuitive video chat experience. If you don’t like what you create, there is always a “reset” option which will return the AlterCam feed to its plain default state.
If you’re using another program like Zoom, WebEx, or Skype, you can convert AlterCam into a virtual audio. For this, you have to install a driver on the screen and change your settings on Skype or other tools. Snapshots can be captured from the video feed between the time interval of 0.5 seconds through 5 seconds.
You can easily change your IP cameras and web cameras, screen resolution, and more from the top menu.
Do you want to take a break during the video chat? You can play any video media on your webcam so that your fellow chatters stay entertained in your absence.
You can also change your voice in real time to a number of effects which can provide hours of fun and entertainment. No more boring, repetitive chats about the weather!
Overall, the combined features of AlterCam can drastically change your video-chatting experience with your friends and family. However, the user interface could use some improvement. For a software dedicated to transforming your video chat experience, its UI looks dated.
Pros and Cons of AlterCam as a Video Chat EnhancerThe AlterCam software is a good way to add more color, depth, and imagination to your video interactions. With more than 50 live effects, you will never run short of ideas. With the ability to add image overlays and text over and under your videos, you will enjoy a truly interactive experience.
It supports HD video resolution and uses GPU acceleration to minimize your CPU usage. Therefore, it is one of the lightest webcam management solutions you can find online. A desktop broadcasting feature brings a complete video-conferencing-like experience.
There is also a lack of support for non-Windows desktop users. If you’re using macOS or Linux, you won’t be able to utilize this software.
PricingAlterCam is available as a lifetime license with three different pricing tiers. A single and family license can be activated on two to six computers. If you want to use AlterCam special effects for commercial purposes, such as creating a YouTube video, you will need to pay for a business license at the higher-priced tier.
If you lose your activation code, an “automatic reminder” facility can be used to re-send the license details to yourself. They have a technical support to assist in these matters.
Our VerdictAlterCam is a great software to enhance your video-chatting experiences. The people you’re interacting with will greatly enjoy and appreciate the colorful themes and backgrounds. If you are a frequent video chatter, you should give this a trial run.
By using AlterCam as a virtual audio device, you can make your Skype or Zoom interactions more polished. If you’re looking to spice up your monotonous video chats, AlterCam will definitely answer many of your needs.

How Dynamic Search Ads Can Take Over Your Adwords Account With Devastating Effects
Dynamic Search Ads can be great, but as many other things within AdWords, they require optimization and do not work optimally with standard settings.
The Official Statement: It Fills Out The Gaps
Due to all the new searches happening on Google on a daily basis, you can’t harvest all the potential AdWords can provide by solely relying on Phrase Match and Exact Match keywords. To reach the full potential in AdWords you need to add BMM keywords to the mix, although some of the searches these might catch will undoubtedly be unprofitable for you.
Bad Ads for Current Search Terms Cause Conversion Rate to Lower
In the AdWords account I recently started managing again, Dynamic Search Ads had been increasing in costs/size over the past year from less than $500 per month to $3,500 in March 2013.
Dynamic Search Ads were now taking up 32% of the overall AdWords budget but only attributed to 15% of the revenue. This was the first sign that something was wrong.
By looking closer it became clear that the issue was related to allowing the DSA campaign to run solo: those search terms covered (or paused) in other campaigns were being taken over by the DSA campaign.
Internal Negative Keywords Are A Must
Looking at the previous example, excluding search terms through negative keywords in your DSA campaign becomes essential for success.
Even though Google says that DSA campaigns will not take over any searches your “active” campaigns are already producing, my findings tell me otherwise. I’ve always been wary about letting Google control too much and this is an open and shut case.
The process of including all your current keywords as negative keywords in your DSA campaigns is however not a small task. Seeing that DSA campaigns are intended for bigger websites, you’re most likely looking at a huge amount of keywords. In our case we had 43,967 active keywords last month.
You can’t just add every keyword as negative in broad match as you would easily exclude all possible searches.
Unprofitable Campaigns Get A Second Chance When Activating Dynamic Search Ads
The campaigns and keywords that you have paused or deleted before due to too low ROI will have a very big chance of popping up in your Dynamic Search Ads again.
We saw a big part of the keywords we had stopped reappearing within the DSA campaign. Most keywords were paused due to:
Small selection of a certain brand or category on the website
Out of season products
Out of stock
Great Place for Keyword Research
One of the most delightful findings from opening an AdWords account with Dynamic Search Ads and having them running for over a year is the amount of available search terms you now have.
We have a lot of data mining to do and I’m confident that we’ll find new and profitable keywords to be implemented as BMM, Phrase and Exact match keywords.
Dynamic Search Ads Are Not Set And Forget
I rarely say that some things within AdWords aren’t good for anyone. Through the years I’ve seen the weirdest practices producing great results, so I’ve learned to keep an open mind.
If Dynamic Search Ads can fulfill its promises then it can be an immense addition to your AdWords campaigns. However, to achieve the kind of promised results you will need to tweak it a lot and some might say that you’re better off taking the time to work on your own AdWords campaigns.
For another case study on Dynamic Search Ads I recommend reading Elizabeth Marsten’s post on chúng tôi about the subject.
How To Add A Printer To Your Chromebook
If you own a Chromebook and have it connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your printer, adding a printer to your Chromebook is almost identical to adding one on any other computer.
Using the printer settings in your Chromebook’s settings menu, you can configure your printer so that you can print to it any time you like.
Table of Contents
How to Add a Wi-Fi Printer to Your ChromebookIf you have a wireless printer connected to your network, adding that printer on your Chromebook is effortless. ChromeOS supports mostly all modern printer drivers.

If you don’t see any new printer you purchase in the list at the bottom of the settings window, you can add it manually using the same process above by selecting the small plus icon to the right of Add printer.
How to Add a USB Printer to Your ChromebookIf you’re using an older printer that requires a USB connection, you can still connect your Chromebook to that printer.
Plug the USB cable from your printer into your Chromebook’s USB port.
You’ll see a pop-up window to add a new printer. Select
Add Printer
.
Follow the wizard to step through adding the new printer.

Note: Whenever you print for the first time, if you don’t see the new printer’s name in the Destination field, select See more… and the printer should be listed in that window.
How to Print From Your ChromebookOnce you’ve added your printer, you can print to it from any Chromebook app that supports printing.
With the document, image, or other media open that you want to print, just press
Ctrl + P
keyboard shortcut on the keyboard to open the Print menu. In that menu, select the
Destination
dropdown and choose
See more
.
In the
Select a destination
window, select the printer you want to print to.
Once you’ve selected the printer you want to print to, select the
button to send that print job to your selected printer.
You should see the document or image printed on the printer you’ve selected on your network.
Printing From a Google ChromebookAs you can see, printing from a Chromebook is similar to printing from any other computer. Just open the Chromebook Settings menu and go through the process to add the new printer using the simple menus.
Also, if you want to print from your Chromebook outside your home, away from your Wi-Fi network, Google Cloud Print is the perfect solution.

Photo Effects With The Dissolve Blend Mode In Photoshop
Since no one likes to be the unpopular kid, I thought it would be fun to look at a couple of ways the Dissolve blend mode can be used to quickly add more interest to a photo. First, after applying a simple sepia tone effect to our image, we’ll add a bit more of an artistic look to it by combining the Dissolve mode with one of Photoshop’s filters. Then we’ll see how to use Dissolve to easily create a speckled photo border! I’ll be using Photoshop CS4 for this tutorial, but any recent version will work just fine.
If you were to round up a group of long-time Photoshop users and ask them to name a feature in Photoshop that they’ve never found a use for, there’s a good chance the Dissolve blend mode would be mentioned over and over again. While other layer blend modes like Screen, Multiply and Overlay are some of the most important and often used features in all of Photoshop, the Dissolve blend mode, which creates a seemingly random “speckled” pattern as it blends layers together, is usually ignored.
How To Create Photo Effects With The Dissolve Blend ModeStep 1:
Duplicate The Background Layer
As usual, the first step in creating our photo effect is to duplicate the Background layer so that we don’t damage our original image. To do that, go up to the Layer menu at the top of the screen, choose New, and then choose Layer via Copy. Or, for a much faster way to duplicate a layer, simply press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+J (Win) / Command+J (Mac):
Either way tells Photoshop to create a copy of the Background layer, and if we look in the Layers palette, we can see that we now have two layers. The original image is sitting safely on the Background layer on the bottom, while a copy of the image is sitting directly above it. Photoshop has automatically named the new layer “Layer 1”:
A copy of the image appears on “Layer 1”, which is now the currently selected layer.
Step 2: Add A Hue/Saturation Adjustment LayerIf you’re using Photoshop CS3 or earlier, this will bring up the Hue/Saturation dialog box. If you’re using Photoshop CS4 as I am here, the Hue/Saturation options will appear in the Adjustments Panel, which is new to Photoshop CS4. If we wanted to simply convert the image to black and white, we could do so by dragging the Saturation slider all the way to the left, which would remove all of the color, leaving us with a black and white photo. I’d rather make things a bit more interesting by adding a sepia tone effect. To do that, select the Colorize option at the bottom of the dialog box or Adjustments Panel, which will colorize the entire image using a single color. Then set the Hue value to around 40, either by dragging the Hue slider or by typing the value directly into the input box:
Select the “Colorize” option, then set the Hue to around 40 for a sepia tone effect.
Step 3: Change The Blend Mode Of The Adjustment Layer To “Color”Change the blend mode of the adjustment layer to Color.
As we looked at in much more detail in our Photoshop’s Five Essential Blend Modes For Photo Editing tutorial, the Color blend mode blends only the colors from the selected layer with the layer or layers below it. The brightness, or “luminosity” values, are left untouched. Here’s my image after adding the sepia tone and changing the blend mode:
The photo after applying a simple sepia tone effect.
Now that we’ve added our sepia effect, let’s add more of an artistic feel by combining the Dissolve blend mode with one of Photoshop’s filters. We’ll do that next!
Step 4: Select “Layer 1” Step 5: Apply The “Angled Strokes” FilterWith “Layer 1” now selected, go up to the Filter menu at the top of the screen, choose Brush Strokes, and then choose Angled Strokes:
This brings up Photoshop’s large Filter Gallery set to the Angled Strokes options along the right column. Set the Direction Balance, which controls the direction of the brush strokes, to 50, the Stroke Length to 15 and the Sharpness to 3 (these are the default settings so you may not have to change them at all):
Set the Direction Balance to 50, Stroke Length to 15 and Sharpness to 3.
A simple painting effect created with the Angled Strokes filter.
Step 6: Lower The Opacity of “Layer 1”With “Layer 1” still selected, go up to the Opacity option at the top of the Layers palette and lower the layer’s opacity down to 50%. This will blend the brush strokes in with the original image on the Background layer:
Lowering the opacity of a layer allows the layer(s) below it to show through.
Step 7: Change The Blend Mode To “Dissolve”Finally, go back up to the Blend Mode option at the top of the Layers palette and change the blend mode for “Layer 1” from Normal to Dissolve:
Change the blend mode of “Layer 1” to Dissolve.
With the blend mode set to Dissolve, the brush strokes effect now has a speckled appearance, adding to the old fashioned look of the image (the speckles will be easier to see with your own image open in Photoshop than they are in the small screenshot):
The Dissolve blend mode adds a speckled look to the effect.
Step 8:
Select The Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer Step 9: Drag Out A Rectangular Selection
Before we add the Solid Color fill layer, let’s select the area that we want to use as the photo border. First, we’ll drag out a rectangular selection around the area of the photo that we want to appear inside the border. To do that, grab the Rectangular Marquee Tool from the Tools palette, or simply press the letter M on your keyboard to select it with the shortcut:
Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool.
You can reposition the selection as you drag by holding down your spacebar.
Step 10: Invert The SelectionWe now have the area that we want to appear inside the border selected. Problem is, what we really need is for the border area itself to be selected. Fortunately, all we need to do is invert the selection, which will deselect everything that’s currently selected (the area inside the border) and select everything that’s not currently selected (the border area). Go up to the Select menu at the top of the screen and choose Inverse, or use the handy keyboard shortcut for inverting a selection, Shift+Ctrl+I (Win) / Shift+Command+I (Mac):
Invert the selection to quickly select the border area and deselect the area inside the border.
It may not seem at first like anything has happened since the original selection outline still remains, but if you look closely, you’ll see that a second selection outline has now appeared around the edges of the photo. The area between the two selection outlines is now selected and ready to become our photo border, while the area to appear inside the border is now deselected:
The area to become the photo border is now selected.
Step 11:
Add A Solid Color Fill Layer
The fill layers appear above the adjustment layers in the list. Choose a Solid Color fill layer.
Normally, a Solid Color fill layer would fill the entire image with our chosen color, but because we had the border area around our photo selected when we added the fill layer, only the border area was filled with black:
The Solid Color fill layer fills the border area with black.
Step 12: Select The Layer MaskOne of the great things about fill and adjustment layers in Photoshop is that they each come with a built-in layer mask. In fact, it’s the layer mask for the Solid Color fill layer that’s causing the solid black color to appear only in the photo border area. If we look in the Layers palette, we can see that the Solid Color fill layer (which Photoshop has named “Color Fill 1”) contains a layer mask preview thumbnail. Notice how the large rectangular area in the center of the thumbnail is filled with black while the area around it is filled with white. The white represents the area in our document window where the fill layer is visible (the photo border). The black represents the area where the fill layer is not visible (the area inside the photo border).
A white highlight border around the preview thumbnail indicates that the layer mask is currently selected.
Step 13: Change The Layer Blend Mode To “Dissolve”Go back up to the Blend Mode option at the top of the Layers palette and change the blend mode for the Solid Color fill layer from Normal to Dissolve:
Change the blend mode of the fill layer to Dissolve.
Step 14: Apply The “Gaussian Blur” FilterWith the layer mask now selected and the blend mode for the layer set to Dissolve, go up to the Filter menu once again, choose Blur, and then choose Gaussian Blur:
Adjust the look of your specked photo border by dragging the Radius slider left or right.
The final result.
Photoshop’s Dissolve blend mode may not be the most popular kid on the block, especially when it comes to serious photo editing, but as we’ve seen with a couple of examples in this tutorial, it does have potential when creating special effects. The next time you’re looking for an interesting way to blend layers together, give the Dissolve blend mode a try and see what you come up with! Just remember that Dissolve only works with semi-transparent pixels, so you’ll need to either be working with a layer mask as we did here when we created our photo border or you’ll need to lower the opacity of the layer before you’ll see any results with the Dissolve blend mode.
Mextures: Easily Apply Textures, Light Leaks And More Effects To Your Images
There are a lot of photo editing applications in the App Store these days. It is hard to find one that is actually unique. It seems like everything that can be done for iOS photo editing, has been done. So, when an innovative app comes along, it is a real treat.
There are a lot of photo editing applications in the App Store these days. It is hard to find one that is actually unique. It seems like everything that can be done for iOS photo editing, has been done. So, when an innovative app comes along, it is a real treat.
Mextures is the most original photo-editing app for the iPhone that I’ve seen in the App Store in years. It is more than just a filtering mechanism for your images. It lets you layer, blend, and add texture to your pictures, making them in to pro-quality works of art…
DesignThe app is designed to give the user the best view of the image they are working on. About two thirds of the screen is taken up by the working image while the controls are directly below, and the current Textures or Formulas are at the bottom with thumbnail representations of each. To access the main list of Textures or Formulas, tap the arrow tab at the very bottom of the screen.
The features are divided into two categories, the Textures, which are the effects that you can layer onto your images, and the Formulas, which are combinations of Textures. The app comes with premade Formulas from nine popular “iPhoneographers” that created their own favorite recipes for the perfect effects. Users can also create their own formulas that they can name and go back to easily for future images.
App UseUsers start by either taking a picture from within the app, or grabbing one from their device’s photo library. Once you’ve scaled and cropped the image into an Instagram-ready square, you can begin layering.
The app comes with eight different Texture packs. The packs include different themes. For example, Emulsion includes textures that add smudges to the screen that look similar to an emulsion spill. Vintage Gradients features effects that add blended colors and different types of vignettes.
Pick a Texture pack to see what different layers you can add. As soon as you open a pack, the effect will be added to your image. You can move between the different types of textures, but the effect will be added to the photo until you manually delete the layer.
You can add as many or as few layers as you think your image needs. Some of the premade formulas have as many as eight different layers. Of course, just because you can layer, doesn’t mean you should. Sometimes, minimalism is best.
When you add a Texture, you can also increase or decrease the strength of the effect. You can adjust the effect’s opacity by using the bar on the right side of the screen. You can also rotate the effect, so that if you prefer the sunspot to be at the top corner instead of the bottom, you can move it to the position you want.
You can adjust the effects of different layers after they’ve already been added. Just tap the “Layers” section and select the layer you want to adjust. You can make colors brighter or scratches less noticeable. You can also delete or hide layers in the Layers section.
You can further change the effects of each layer that you are editing in Blending Mode. Tap the icon that looks like a magic wand to add overlay, color burn, and more.
Once you’ve added all of the layers you want, you can save the image to your photo library, share it on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and email, open it in another photo editing app like FX Photo Studio. If you like a Formula that you have created, save it to your Formula section to have quick access to it in the future.
There are also nine different premade packs in the Formula section. These Formulas were hand made by iPhoneographers. Each pack is listed under the artist’s name and includes a handful of combined effects that were curated by them individually. If you don’t want to take the time to create your own Formulas, there are more than 40 premade ones for you to choose from.
The GoodThis app is very unique and offers nearly unlimited options for layering textures of different kinds to your images. Even if you are in a hurry and don’t want to take the time to create your own Formula, the 40 plus premade ones are available for you to use.
I love being able to go back and edit individual layers. Instead of having to delete an effect altogether or undo an edit, you can select the layer and make the adjustments individually.
The app works nearly instantaneously, too. One of my go-to image editing apps is FX Photo Studio. I love the app, but each layer takes a few seconds to apply, which can be very time consuming if you are adding a lot of layers. Mextures works immediately and, even when you finalize the image for export, it only takes a few seconds, at the most.
The BadWhen you select a Texture or Formula pack, an effect is automatically added to your image. It is very easy to just delete the layer, but I’d like to be able to see what kinds of effects are in a pack before I add one. Instead I have to remove it if I decide I don’t want to use it.
ValueI honestly can’t believe this app is only $0.99. There are hundreds of effects combinations that can be created using the various Textures and blends. This is the kind of app that would normally cost three or four dollars. The current price reflects a 50 percent off launch sale, so if I were you, I would pick it up before the sale ends.
ConclusionThis is a must-have app for true iPhoneographers. The app offers a virtually unlimited number of effects, and even features premade Formulas by other iPhone photographers. If you are tired of apps that just plop a filter on top of your image and don’t offer much editing capabilities, then you will be very happy with this app. Mextures is available in the App Store. Download it today for $0.99.
