Adobe is releasing updates to some of its Creative Cloud apps today, delivering promised features for video editors and new capabilities for designers. Adobe and leading artists have also teamed up to provide creative resources and tutorials for creatives cooped up at home.Premiere Pro
Today’s headline feature is Productions, a new toolset for Premiere Pro first previewed in January at the Sundance Film Festival. Productions is a system of organization that Adobe hopes will improve workflows for feature film, broadcast, and and web-based episodic content.
With Productions, you’ll see improved performance in Premiere Pro thanks to smaller project sizes, a robust system for securely controlling and cross-referencing assets, and enhanced capabilities for collaborating with multiple editors. Adobe went into more detail in a new blog post:
When you have large or complex workflows, Productions allows you to divide them into smaller pieces, based on the existing Premiere Pro project format. Productions connects the projects, making them into components of the larger workflow and enabling a variety of use cases. For example, an editorial team working on a film can use Productions to organize their workflow around reels and scenes. Episodic shows can be grouped by season, so it’s easy to access other shows to retrieve things like title sequences or audio elements. Agencies can allocate a Production to each client, so they can quickly reference and retrieve assets from existing projects.Dimension
Adobe Dimension also received an update today. Dimension helps designers bridge the gap between 2D and 3D assets to create polished product product shots and rendered scenes. Starting today, you’ll be able to use customizable 3D text and geometric shapes in Dimension.
According to Adobe:
The new text engine extrudes 3D text from fonts in users’ operating systems and offers options to customize properties such as spacing and depth.
The new basic shape assets in Dimension include a cube, plane, sphere cone, torus and cylinder. All of the shapes are parametric, enabling designers to adjust various properties of each shape, such as the measurements of individual shape components, corner stylings and the number of sides. The basic shape assets can also be customized with materials and textures.

You’re done editing and you want to export your project, congratulations, you’ve already done the tough part. Welcome to the simplest part of the whole project.
Call me Dave. As a professional video editor, I’ve been editing for the past 10 years and yes, you guessed right, I am still editing! As an expert in Adobe Premiere Pro, I can boldly tell you that I know the nukes and crannies of Adobe Premiere.
In this article, I’m going to show you a detailed step-by-step guide on how to export your amazing project. It doesn’t matter if you are on Mac or Windows, they are both the same step. The whole process is very simple and straightforward.
Step 1: Open up Your Project
Step 2: Customize Export Settings
A dialog box will open up. Let’s go through it.
You don’t want to tick “Match Sequence Settings” as it will not allow you to customize the settings and get the best quality as much as possible.
Preset: We are going to use Match Source – High Bitrate Then we are going to tweak the settings.
Comments: You can put anything you want just to describe the video you’re exporting so Premiere can add it into the video metadata, this isn’t necessary though, but you can go ahead with it if you want, it’s your choice 🙂
The next part is pretty explanatory, if you want to export video, check the box! Audio? Check the box! Want to export either of the two? Check the two boxes! And finally, if you want to export just one of them, check the one you want to export.
The last part of this section is the Summary. You get to see the whole informations of your sequence/project. Also, you see where your project is exporting to. Do not freak out, we will get to each part.
Step 3: Handle Other Settings
We only need to tamper and understand the Video and Audio sections. As this is the necessary part.
We only need the “Basic Video Settings” and “Bitrate Settings” under this section.
Bitrate Settings: We have three options here. CBR, VBR 1 Pass, VBR 2 Pass. The first one CBR is a Constant Bitrate Encoding which will export your sequence at a fixed rate. We don’t have anything to do with that. Obviously, VBR is a Variable Bitrate Encoding. We are going to use either VBR 1 or VBR 2.
VBR, 1 Pass as its name implies is only going to read through and render your project once! It’s faster. Depending on the duration of your project, this will export in no time.
VBR, 2 Pass will read through and render your project two times. Ensuring it’s not missing any frame. First pass analyzes how much bitrate is needed and second pass renders the video. This will give you a cleaner and more quality project. Don’t get me wrong, VBR 1 Pass will also give you a better export.
Target Bitrate: The higher the number, the bigger file and the more quality file you get. You should play with it. Also, note the Estimated File Size displayed beneath the dialog box to see how well you’re going. I recommend you don’t go below 10 Mbps.
Maximum Bitrate: You get to see this when you’re using VBR 2 Pass. It’s called Variable Bitrate because you can set the bitrate to vary. You can set the maximum Bitrate you would want.
Audio Format Settings: The Industry Standard for Video Audio is AAC. Ensure that is used.
Basic Audio Settings: Your audio codec AAC. The Sample Rate should be 48000 Hz which is the industry standard. Also, your channels should be in Stereo unless you want to export in Mono or 5:1. A stereo gives you a Left and Right Sound. Mono channels all your audio in one direction. And 5:1 will give you a 6 surround sound.
Bitrate Settings: Your bitrate should be 320 kps. Which is the industry standard. You can go higher if you want. Note that this will affect your file size.

Social media is the place where videos get uploaded most often, and if you edit videos frequently you’ve more than likely uploaded them to a social media platform. With Adobe Premiere, there are several ways you can export your project in order to make playback on social media much smoother and better-looking.
You don’t have to change anything during your editing process. It all has to do with how you export your video. Certain formats are better suited to social media, such as Instagram or Facebook, than they might be for viewing your project on a widescreen.

Each social platform has different specifications you’ll want to keep in mind for exporting. So if you know you want to export a video to a social media platform, follow the steps below to achieve a high quality video you can post without worry.Exporting Videos From Premiere to Facebook
If you’re thinking of posting videos on Facebook that you want to be sure look professional, you’ll want to take a look at some of your export settings and be sure they are optimized for this platform. There are already 3 export presets available you can choose from, or you can do it manually.
Facebook videos in particular need to have a file size of 4GB or less in order to post it. You’ll want to keep videos on here short if possible, depending on what you’re trying to achieve engagement-wise.

Uploading videos to Instagram through Premiere is a little bit trickier as Instagram doesn’t allow you to upload videos from your desktop, and it’s not connected to Premiere. There is still a workaround, however.
You’ll also want to follow the 4GB file size here as well. Also make sure the video is no longer than 60 seconds (unless you are posting to IGTV, but these instructions are for a regular Instagram post).
First, make sure your video’s settings are set to these recommended ones for Instagram:
In order to post the video, you’ll want to make sure you have Google Drive or Dropbox. You can upload the video to these locations on your desktop, and then go into one of those apps on your mobile phone to download the video to it.

Like the other social media platforms, square videos work best on Twitter as far as quality goes. There are also two export presets for Twitter you can use, and adjust as needed. The video player will also adjust to meet the video’s aspect ratio if you don’t want a square video.

The most popular video sharing site is, of course, YouTube. The site is pretty flexible with what you can upload to the site, but there are some recommended settings you’ll want to keep in mind.
There are five presets you can use to export to YouTube. Depending on your project, you might want to adjust certain aspects to suit your needs. You’ll want to set the format to H.264, as this will provide you with the best quality video.
You should also change your bitrate settings:
After this, you can export and publish your video. Like with Facebook and Twitter, you can automatically export your video from Premiere to YouTube. Under the Export Settings, just go to YouTube and check the box there. Then select Sign In to connect your YouTube account to Premiere.Exporting From Premiere Pro to Social Media
With all of these settings, if you’re exporting square videos, you’ll want to adjust your sequence settings to match the export settings so you can see how the exported video will look while you’re editing it.

Many people start their InDesign journeys by expecting it to function like a word processing app. But InDesign’s focus on typography and design means that it works quite a bit differently, even when it comes to basic operations like making part of your text bold.
The process is still quite simple, but it’s worth taking a look at why InDesign is different.
Bold text in InDesign requires a bold typeface file.
Stroke outlines should not be used to create fake bold text.
Bold typefaces for use with InDesign are available from Adobe Fonts for free.
Creating Bold Text in InDesign
The quickest way to bold text in InDesign is to use the bold keyboard shortcut.
Select the text you want to bold using the Type tool, and then use the keyboard shortcut Command + Shift + B. If you have a bold version of the typeface available, your text will immediately display as bold.
You can also create bold text in InDesign by using the Character panel or the Control panel that runs across the top of the document window.
When you have a text frame object selected, the Control panel replicates all of the functionality of the Character panel, so it’s up to you which panel you want to use.
Wherever you choose to do it, this method gives you the ultimate level of control over your bold text, because many typefaces created for design professionals have multiple different bold types available.
For example, Garamond Premier Pro has four different bold versions, as well as four bold italic versions, not to mention the medium and semibold weights, which offer a huge degree of flexibility for typographic design.
If you want to remove bold, simply choose Regular or another version of the font.
When you want to make text thicker, select the text you want to adjust, and then select the bold typeface you want to use from the dropdown menu.
That’s all there is to it!
Adding Bold Fonts with Adobe Fonts
If you want to use a bold font but you don’t have the bold version of your typeface installed on your computer, you should check the Adobe Fonts website to see if you can install one.
Many of the typefaces on Adobe Fonts are available for free to anyone with an Adobe account, and there are over 20,000 fonts available if you have an active Creative Cloud subscription.

Making Bold Text in InDesign the Hideous Way
I need to say right at the start that I do not recommend that you ever do this. I wouldn’t even mention it in this article at all, except that so many other tutorials pretend that it is an acceptable way to change font weight in InDesign – and it is definitely not a good idea, as you’ll see.
InDesign can add an outline (known as a stroke) around any object, including text characters. Adding a line around your text definitely makes it look thicker, but it will also completely ruin the shapes of the letters and may even cause them to overlap each other, turning each word into an unreadable mess, as you can see below.
So many tutorials recommend this, but it’s absolutely hideous
Proper bold typefaces are designed to be bold from the very beginning, so the letterforms do not get distorted or cause any display issues when used.
InDesign is a favorite tool of typographers, and no typographer worth the title would ever use the stroke method to make bold text in InDesign because it completely destroys the style of the typeface.
No matter what your skill level is, you probably shouldn’t use it either!
