Suggested January 2024 Another Blunder For Rim As Government Agencies Dump Blackberries For Iphones

Research In Motion’s BlackBerry not that long ago was the dominant smartphone platform. Due to its incompetent management all too easily waving off the iPhone threat, which along with Android went on to slaughter the BlackBerry in the consumer space, RIM has now sought a retreat in big corporations and government agencies – its only remaining strongholds.

The problem is, the enterprise market is now dropping BlackBerries in droves and governments around the world are following suit. The latest example: both the U.S. Immigration and Customer Enforcement agency and government consultant Booz Allen Hamilton Inc. are dropping a total of nearly 50,000 BlackBerry handsets in favor of iPhones and devices powered by Google’s Android software…

Reuters reports that the U.S. Immigration and Customer Enforcement agency will not re-new its contract with RIM. Instead, its 17,600 employees are all getting iPhones and Androids in a deal worth an estimated $2.1 million:

The agency said it has relied on RIM for eight years but that RIM’s technology “can no longer meet the mobile technology needs of the agency”.

Ouch!

It also said that it had analyzed Apple’s iOS-based devices and Google’s Android operating system and concluded that for the near term Apple’s iPhone services offer the best technology for the agency because of Apple’s tight controls of the hardware platform and operating system.

The iPhones will be used by, among other agencies, Homeland Security Investigations, Enforcement and Removal Operations and Office of the Principal Legal Advisor. It’s an important win for Apple, whose iPhone is already deployed by more than 90 percent of Fortune 500 companies and increasingly by governments the world over.

Government consultant Booz Allen Hamilton Inc. has dealt another fresh blow to RIM, per Bloomberg.

Booz Allen Hamilton Inc., whose 25,000 staff provide consulting services to the U.S. government, has dropped BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. as a smartphone supplier.

Booz Allen has started decommissioning the firm’s dedicated BlackBerry server that runs those devices and plans to move those staff onto iPhones made by Apple Inc. and handsets that run Google Inc. Android software in the coming months, James Fisher, a Booz Allen spokesman, said by telephone.

And what of employees who now bring their own BlackBerry to work and won’t be issued an iPhone or an Android phone? Easy, those people “won’t be able to access work e-mail on the device once the switch is complete”.

It’s the BlackBerry stigma on the corporate level.

Headquartered in McLean Virginia, the company has consultancy contracts with the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force and Department of Homeland Security. Its parent company Booz Allen Hamilton Holding Corp. reported sales of $5.86 billion in 2011, most of which came from government consulting.

This has got to be RIM’s worst nightmare come true. When your most prized clients talk crap about your platform, you can tell the end is near. Of course, RIM has only itself to blame. Its BlackBerry 10 OS is way overdue and first devices running it have been pushed back until Q1 2013.

Consider this: RIM shares are down 95 percent from their mid-2008 high. Just this year, the shares have tumbled 45 percent.

Right now, RIM could be sold off in parts and likely below book value. I can see them licensing the BlackBerry business to a select few companies whilst selling off their BBM and server products to the highest bidder (Oracle or Microsoft).

And as much as I hate to say this, everything else RIM has is pretty much worthless.

What do you think, is RIM already done for?

Apple Only Accepting Credit Cards For Iphones?

Engadget this morning pointed us to the news that Apple was now only selling iPhones to people with credit cards – no Cash/Check money order.  In addition, the limit on phones is now down from 5 to 2 per purchase.

Why?

According to Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris, the official Apple Line is, um:

“Customer response to the iPhone has been off the charts, and limiting iPhone sales to two per customer helps us ensure that there are enough iPhones for people who are shopping for themselves or buying a gift,” Kerris said. “We’re requiring a credit or debit card for payment to discourage unauthorized resellers.”

YEOUCH!  The 1st 1/2 of that statement would seem to be untrue – there are plenty of iPhones out there no one is complaining of store shelves being bare – in fact, Apple will have to ramp up sales (Europe/Asia help) to meet its 10 million by the end of 2008 forecast.

The second half is a bit more genuine.  Apple has a very real problem with unauthorized resellers.

We’ve been saying all along that iPhone hacking isn’t just a niche market devoted to crazy hackers.  Here in Paris, SIM unlocked iPhones are all over the place.  London too.  The plummeting Dollar has made an Apple Store visit a requirement for every iPod loving European over the past few years.  Now, iPhones are on the shopping list.  My wife has been hit up numerous times for iPhones on her current trip to New York (hehe).

So what about the MBA’s at Apple who came up with the revenue sharing plan?  They are obviously falling all over themselves trying to correct course with things like the 1.1.1 (codename: bricksville) update and this current plan – which will surely stop the problem…  Seriously though (see picture – this isn’t going to slow), it is kinda getting scary – the lengths to which Apple is willing to go to to keep people from changing carriers – one shutters to think of what happens next.

What about the analyst’s predictions?  Hacking was not a concern for Apple?

Shaw Wu of American Technology Research described the number as “immaterial,” representing “only a small group of users, namely hackers.”  He is 100% wrong – yet again (who hires/listens to these guys?).  The phone hacking IS a problem for Apple.  The recently announced quarter of a million SIM unlocked iPhones was probably a low “guess”.  We use quotes because Apple knows the exact number.  How?  Take Apple’s iPhone total sales, call AT&T ask their total iPhones activated, then ask someone in finance to subtract one from the other.  That’s how you come up with your “guess”.

Obviously, not only is Apple losing their cut (10-20% of iPhone owner’s wireless revenue over 2 years), but AT&T is not pleased.  While most of these phones are heading to Canada/overseas, many more are being used in the States on Tmobile or on AT&T without the 2 year plan.  As we’ve said before, hacked iPhones are blanketing Europe ahead of their official (more costly) release next month.  The O2s, Oranges and T-mobiles have got to be getting pretty pissed off and want to see some action…schnell!

Hence, today’s action.  Apple, you know you could just call the whole thing off right?

Apple Government User Data Requests For 2013 Revealed

Apple government user data requests for 2013 revealed

Today Apple has released a form which shows the most recent round of government requests for data from Apple on their user base. What you’re going to see is two charts, one that shows account requests, the other that shows device requests, the both of them detailed to a point by Apple insofar as what they can show the public and how they’ve been asked to present this information. Of course the U.S. government would rather not see any of this information released, and as such, Apple notes what restrictions have been placed on the data they’re sharing.

The information Apple shares this week is as follows: “the account requests and device requests Apple received from law enforcement agencies between January 1, 2013, and June 30, 2013.” The difference between device requests and account requests is simple. With a device request, the business is generally about lost or stolen devices – or when a shipment of stolen devices is found. Account Requests cover pretty much everything else – this is what Apple describes as the data you don’t generally expect the government to be attaining as it, more or less, belongs to you, the private citizen.

“Only a small fraction of the requests that Apple receives seek personal information related to an iTunes, iCloud, or Game Center account. Account-based requests generally involve account holders’ personal data and their use of an online service in which they have an expectation of privacy, such as government requests for customer identifying information, email, stored photographs, or other user content stored online. Apple logs these as account requests.” – Apple

Apple suggests that they’re aiming to release as much information on government requests for user data as possible, in as open a manner as possible. To this end, they’ve released a full PDF on Government Info Requests. This document includes the following paragraph.

“Like many companies, Apple receives requests from law enforcement agencies to provide customer information. As we have explained, any government agency demanding customer content from Apple must get a court order. When we receive such a demand, our legal team carefully reviews the order. If there is any question about the legitimacy or scope of the court order, we challenge it. Only when we are satisfied that the court order is valid and appropriate do we deliver the narrowest possible set of information responsive to the request.” – Apple

In other words – Apple isn’t about to be seen as shaking hands behind-the-scenes with organizations like the NSA. You’ll find that the numbers included in the charts shared today do not differentiate between law enforcement agencies, per demand from the U.S. government. You’ll also find the requests rounded to the nearest 1000, another part of the demands of the U.S. government. You’ll see much more specific numbers appearing in every single other country category.

Stick around the Apple hub here on SlashGear for more data as it appears, we’ll be following this particular push for transparency though, deep dives commencing.

Seven Questions For Bu’s New Student Government President

At last week’s Student Government election results dinner in the Trustee Ballroom, Dhruv Kapadia, next year’s student body president, refused to allow himself to get too excited. As much as he wanted to celebrate, his mind was already racing, thinking about the tasks ahead.

“I’m already thinking about what’s coming next, and making sure as soon as the team gets into office that we’re ready to go and work for BU students,” said Kapadia, who ran for president on the Fight to BU slate, after the dinner. “I fully empathize with the reality that BU Student Government has maybe not been the most legitimate organization in the past, has not done a great job of reaching out, and I want to say that my administration is going to work to address those issues and we’re going to make sure to get every single voice heard this academic year.”

Kapadia’s victory came on the heels of a tight election, with Fight to BU taking 51.5 percent of the vote against the opposing slate, BeYou, which earned 48.5 percent of the vote. At-Large parties IMPACT BU, the Unity and Social Quality Initiative, the Community Action Party, and the Center for Gender, Sexuality and Activism each received two seats in next year’s Senate. A little more than 25 percent of the student body voted this year, a notable increase from the 15 percent turnout in recent  years.

BU Today spoke with Kapadia—who has a double major, in political science and economics, and is minoring in statistics on the prelaw track—about his platform, which he says centers around engaging with the city of Boston, empowering marginalized students, and prioritizing environmental sustainability.

Q

&

A With Dhruv Kapadia

BU Today:

What was it about the Fight to BU platform that most resonated with voters?

Dhruv Kapadia: We ran on a platform of empowerment, the environment, and engagement. And engagement is what really stuck with voters. At the end of the day, all of our [initiatives] really revolve around making sure that Student Government is seen as an institution, which unfortunately hasn’t been the case in the past. We really want to make sure, unlike with previous administrations, that we are reaching out to every student, regardless of where they come from, economic status, racial background, cultural background, to make sure that all of their voices are heard. And I think that’s what really resonated and brought us such a diverse and large coalition that allowed us to get the majority that we needed.

BU Today:

What do you view as your biggest challenge in the coming year?

BU Today:

How do you plan to work with the BU administration?

BU Today:

How often do you hope to meet with BU administrators?

Dhruv Kapadia: From my understanding, we’ll be meeting with John Battaglino [assistant dean and Student Activities Office director] once a week, and Dean Kenn Elmore (Wheelock’87) [associate provost and dean of students] once a month, and then three times a year with President Brown.

BU Today:

And will you publicize as best as you can what comes out of these meetings?

Dhruv Kapadia: Yes, that is a big thing we want to have. So many students don’t even know that Student Government meets with these very important administrators and policymakers, so we want to be as transparent as possible. We’ll try to get a recording of the meetings out to students or meeting minutes when we send out our monthly emails to the undergraduate students.

BU Today:

This year saw the best voting turnout for Student Government elections since 2023, with approximately 25 percent of students voting (turnout usually hovers at plus or minus 15 percent, according to the Daily Free Press ). Why do you think so many students voted this year?

Dhruv Kapadia: I think there was definitely an engagement of different communities on campus. Having been a part of the slate that is completely made up of people of color, I think that it definitely brought out a more diverse coalition of voters to come out and vote. I would also like to acknowledge that the other slate [BeYou] did a great job of campaigning and reaching out to their respective target demographics. Another reason I think we were able to edge over BeYou was just being able to get more first-time voters to come out, and by really acknowledging that Student Government is a student organization at the end of the day—we’re not superior to anyone else, we’re not more powerful. What we are is a vehicle for change. And I think going to students, whether it was in the dining hall or in the GSU, and having those honest conversations really incentivized people to come out and vote for us. Those are the biggest reasons why we were able to get 4,050 votes.

BU Today:

How can students get involved with your administration?

Fix – Google For Android Shows As Offline

Users of the Google app or the Google Assistant for Android may find times when the app displays a message that says “Offline. No network available. Check your connection and try again.“. It may display this message even when there’s an Internet connection. Here are the simple steps that can help fix the issue and get started with your work or play.

The Google app of any Android phone is the hub for many built-in features and functionalities of the overall Android experience. This single app controls Google Search, Google Assistant AI, Google News, Google Translate, Identify Song, Google Discover, Google Collections, and many more. If this app is down, you lose many utilities of your Android smartphone. So, when facing any Google app functionality issues, get started with the following troubleshooting ideas to fix it for good.

What Is Google App?

You may know it just by the Google Search box on your smartphone Home Screen. You can actually open the parent Google app from the app drawer. It’ll just say Google with a Google’s G logo. It’s a built app for all smartphones that use the stock Android or any modified version of Google Android. You can’t uninstall or shut down this app because it takes care of many background functionalities of the smartphone. Here are some examples:

When you quickly search for something on Android, that’s the Google app.

If you swipe from the left edge of the screen on your smartphone, you get a bunch of news articles. This is also the Google app.

When you redirect Chrome from Chrome to another app, the Google app takes care of the redirection.

Not to mention, all small but great help like in-app text translation, reverse photo search, weather update, etc., are also from the Google app.

What’s This Google App Offline Error?

Google app is pretty neat! It’s lightweight and doesn’t bog down the device like other mega apps. However, it has its own share of glitches and funny errors that are highly annoying. For example, the following are the most common issues that you can face while using the Google app:

It looks like you’re offline

Check your network connection and try again

No data connection

Google Assistant keeps loading when you say Okay Google

In all the above errors, the Google app thinks that the Android system doesn’t have access to a functional internet network, either through mobile data or Wi-Fi. Though, you might see that network bars are there or the internet is working on Chrome. When you face the above, try these troubleshooting ideas without wasting time:

Double-Check Mobile or Wi-Fi Internet

If the Google app is showing the internet isn’t available, then it’s worth checking whether your mobile or Wi-Fi internet is actually working or not. Open YouTube or any other content streaming app and try to watch a video. If it works, the internet isn’t the problem.

Sometimes, your Android device may show mobile internet is active but it’s not downloading or uploading any data due to network issues. Swipe down the notifications shade from the top of the device screen and activate Airplane mode. After 10 to 15 seconds, disable the Airplane mode. This will force a reset of the cellular network strength. Now, switch off and on the mobile data internet button on the device.

Now, open the Google app and see if it’s serving the latest news or not. You could also search for something online on Google Search.

Contact IT Admin for Organization Managed Devices

Are you using an Android smartphone given to you by your employer or using your own Android but the employer is managing it for the organization’s security reasons? In that case, you need to check with the IT admin of your organization. Sometimes, businesses may disable third-party app logins using work or business emails. Thus, the Google app won’t work in such cases.

Sign-In to Google App Using a Personal Email

If you’re unable to use the Google app from a business email, try signing in with a personal email like Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Outlook email, Apple Mail, and so on. It also fixes the Google app offline error.

Open the Android Settings app.

Navigate to the Passwords & accounts.

There, touch the Add account option.

On the Add an account screen, choose the email service from the provided list.

Let’s choose Google.

On the Verify that it’s you pop-up, authenticate the action using your fingerprint or PIN.

Enter your email or mobile phone number and tap Next on the Google Sign in screen.

Enter a password or OTP to complete the sign-in process.

Now, open the Google app from the app drawer and tap your profile picture in the top right corner.

There, tap the drop-down arrow beside your previous email.

An email selection menu will pop down.

Choose the newly-added email.

This should fix the Google app issue instantly!

Force Stop and Restart Google App

Here’s how you can stop the app from working in the background and restart from the app drawer to fix the Google app offline error:

Open the app drawer and long-press the Google app.

Three to four context menu-type cards will pop up.

There, tap the (i) icon to open the App info window of the Google app.

Touch the Force stop button.

Now, go to the Home Screen.

Again open the apps drawer and launch the Google app.

Check if Google Assistant or Search works or not.

Uninstall All Updates of the Google App

When the Google app doesn’t work as intended, you may also try uninstalling all the recent updates. This will revert the app back to the factory version. Sometimes recent updates contain minor bugs that cripple the app after updating. However, the developer quickly releases a patch to fix that. Until the patch is there, you can use the app in the factory version. Here’s what you need to do to fix the Google app offline issue:

Open Google Play Store and tap your profile picture.

Touch the cogwheel icon to access the Settings screen.

There, tap Network preferences.

Now, tap on Auto-update apps.

Choose Don’t auto-update apps from the pop-up that shows up.

Go to the App info screen of the Google app. You already know the steps from the previous troubleshooting.

There, you’ll see the kebab or three dots menu in the top right corner.

Tap on that menu and then choose Uninstall updates from the context menu that shows up.

The Google app will close. Now, open the app from the app drawer and see if it’s working or not. If it’s working, update Google apps a few days later. Don’t forget to switch back to auto-update apps on the Play Store by reversing the above steps to disable auto-update.

Clear Cache and Data of Google App

If you don’t want to uninstall updates of the Google app, you may consider clearing the cache and app data of Google data. Here’s how it’s done:

Go to the Google app’s App info page as you did previously.

There, tap Storage & cache.

Inside Storage, touch the Clear cache button.

Now, touch the Manage space button.

On the Google Search Storage screen, tap Clear Google Search Data and Clear All Data.

Update Android OS

If you turned off automatic updates of your Android device, you can face various app compatibility issues. Thus, you must update the device to its latest security patches and OS upgrades. Head over to this excellent coverage of “How to Check for Updates on Android” and give this a shot.

Once you update an Android, it should restart automatically. If it doesn’t restart your device by long pressing the power button on the side of the device and then choosing Restart on the screen. Now, check if Google Assistant or Search works perfectly or not.
