Aston Martin just revealed a self-flying hybrid plane

Aston Martin wants to build a flying car, with the Volante Vision Concept looking ahead to how a personal plane capable of vertical take-off and landing could cut urban congestion. Designed in collaboration with Rolls-Royce, Cranfield University, and Cranfield Aerospace Solutions, the three-seater aircraft would allow commuters with deep pockets to avoid traffic jams back on the ground.

Aston Martin envisages the Volante Vision Concept using a hybrid-electric drivetrain. That’d be produced by Rolls-Royce – the engine-makers, that is, not the car company owned by BMW Group – which already has a track record in electrification.

“Rolls-Royce has already delivered hybrid-electric systems for other applications including ships and trains, and we’re very excited about the potential of the technology in aerospace,” Rob Watson, director of Rolls-Royce Electrical, said of the collaboration. “This is a great opportunity to collaborate on a pioneering project which will use high performance hybrid-electric propulsion technologies for personal air mobility concepts that could transform the future of transportation.”

Exactly how far the aircraft would be able to fly is unclear at this stage. Aston Martin is billing it as designed for both urban and inter-city use, taking over the typical commute. “Humans have always spent on average, one hour commuting to and from work,” Dr Andy Palmer, president and CEO of the automaker, explained. “The distance we live from our workplace has been determined by the methods of transportation available.”

While the overlap between supercar owners and trained pilots is probably reasonably high, Aston Martin isn’t counting on that to make the Volante Vision Concept practical. Instead, it envisages the aircraft as being autonomous: able to take off vertically, fly itself to a programmed destination, and then land vertically. That will use technologies developed by Cranfield Aerospace Solutions and Cranfield University.

Of course, if it’s going to wear the Aston Martin badge, it has to look the part, too. The concept has three rotors, two mounted at the front and one enclosed in the rear fairing. Stubby wings would double as landing struts, while the cabin – a fairly tight affair, by the look of things – would seat one at the front and then two behind.

It’s not Aston Martin’s first foray off the road, mind. The company revealed its plans for a submarine last year, with the so-called Project Neptune luxury mini-sub expected to begin production later this year. Capable of diving to depths of more than 1,600 feet, and sprint at speeds just shy of 6 mph, the bubble-topped water craft has a price tag that starts at a heady $3m.

The Volante Vision Concept is a little further out than that, however. Aston Martin describes it as “a near future study” and isn’t putting any more specific release plans out in public yet. Considering one of the biggest challenges VTOL aircraft – and personal air transportation in general – face is regulatory, that’s a sizable hurdle any production version would have to overcome.

How Can A Commercial Airplane Just Disappear?

A child looks on at a viewing gallery overlooking AirAsia planes on the tarmac at Changi Airport in Singapore December 29, 2014. The missing AirAsia plane carrying 162 people is presumed to have crashed off the Indonesian coast, an official said on Monday, as countries in the region offered to help Jakarta in the search and recovery effort. The Indonesia AirAsia plane, an Airbus A320-200, disappeared after its pilot failed to get permission to alter course to avoid bad weather during a flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore on Sunday. Over the weekend, the world was gripped by a tragic, yet eerily familiar, occurrence. On Sunday morning, AirAsia QZ8501, an Airbus A320-200 aircraft flying from Indonesia to Singapore, disappeared from radar above the Java Sea, prompting extensive search and rescue efforts in the region. The flight was carrying 162 people.

The event evokes memories of the loss of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which also disappeared from radar screens in March of this year. While these two instances occurred relatively close together in time, the chances of such high-profile planes falling off the radar without any warning are extremely rare — especially within the same year.

“It’s unusual that if they were in some kind of emergency, that the pilots didn’t come back with a mayday or some kind of emergency declaration,” Vernon Grose, a former investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board and former scientist for the Federal Aviation Administration, tells Popular Science. “However, if the force of nature was sufficient and tore the wings off the airplane, the pilots wouldn’t have any time to communicate. But that’s pretty rare that you have two accidents like this so close to each other in the same year.”

“That’s pretty rare that you have two accidents like this so close to each other in the same year.”

To establish the location of an airplane, air traffic controllers use two types of radar. Primary radar consists of electromagnetic signals that bounce off any objects they encounter, indicating where the plane is physically in the sky. Secondary radar works by sending signals to a plane’s transponder, which then sends back signals indicating where the plane is and how fast it’s moving.

It’s not yet clear if the most recent AirAsia flight went missing from primary or secondary radar. If a natural force caused immediate destruction to the plane or caused electrical power to go out, the transponder would no longer work, and the plane would be lost on secondary radar, yet still visible via primary radar. However, if the plane fell at an extremely high speed, it would disappear from both radar systems.

Pilots also keep in touch with air traffic control over the radio, and the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) can transmit super short text messages via radio signals or satellites. As Grose noted, pilots will typically use one of these systems to indicate to ground control that something is wrong before a plane vanishes. Just before disappearing, the pilot of AirAsia QZ8501 asked air traffic control to change its route to avoid clouds, indicating the plane may have encountered disastrous weather conditions. However, a distress call was never made.

Where To Look

An Indonesian policeman points at a map of Indonesia at a crisis center in Juanda International Airport, Surabaya. The missing AirAsia flight QZ8501 carrying 162 people is presumed to have crashed off the Indonesian coast, an official said on Monday.

According to Grose, the lack of a mayday means that whatever happened to AirAsia QZ8501 likely occurred extremely quickly, either taking out the plane’s electrical systems or incapacitating the pilots. However, there is a diversity of opportunities for communication failure to happen before a plane disappears.

“If the plane’s falling, and all the power’s been blown out by an explosion, you’ll have no communication,” says Grose. “If the crew’s unconscious or dead, there’s no communication. Or they may not take the option to communicate; they could be so busy trying to bring the plane down safely,” as was likely the case with Air France Flight 447, which crashed into the Atlantic Ocean in 2009. “So there are a number of reasons why, as the airplane descends, you wouldn’t have communication.”

Whatever happened to AirAsia QZ8501 likely occurred extremely quickly.

There are also numerous subtle ways pilots can lose communication with the ground, including switching to the wrong frequency or incorrectly setting the aircraft radio panel. Since the pilots successfully communicated with ground control minutes before vanishing, those scenarios seem unlikely.

And of course, terrorism is also a concern, as it was with Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, in which the captain was suspected of potentially tampering with the plane’s autopilot. (The cause of Flight 370 has yet to be determined.) However, Grose says he has personally ruled out terrorism as a factor in the AirAsia disappearance, believing worsening weather conditions are to blame.

As for any type of connection between the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 and AirAsia QZ8501, Grose says it’s incredibly unlikely and that people shouldn’t speculate further until the wreckage from the planes can be retrieved. If anything, the tragedy simply adds to a terrible year for Malaysian aviation: AirAsia is headquartered in the Southeast Asian country, as is Malaysia Airlines, which lost a second plane this year after Flight MH 17 was shot down over Ukraine in July.

“That just says that life itself isn’t predictable,” Grose says. “It’s tragic and ironic that Malaysia airplanes have had three tragedies in less than a year.”

Using Student Awards To Promote Self

An elementary teacher shares some ideas for how awards can be used to foster students’ growth, self-awareness, and learning.

The end of the school year is always a time full of excitement, joy, and oodles of awards ceremonies to celebrate the year’s accomplishments. Teachers choose students to be publicly recognized for their achievements at an end-of-year assembly. Proud parents line up with cameras to snap photos of their child beaming onstage with an award in hand.

There’s no doubt that many students covet being chosen by their teachers to receive an award. While it feels great to win an award at any time during the school year, what are students really learning from the awards they receive?

Meaningful rewards

This is a perfect time to rethink awards that promote self-reflection and to celebrate student growth, not perfection. By involving students in the self-reflection process, awards become an opportunity for students to identify and honor their own strengths, at the end of the school year and throughout the year. Here are some reasons to promote self-reflection in awards ceremonies. Self-reflection does the following things:

Fosters growth. When students reflect on their progress, they have a better road map of where they’ve been and where they want to go. This will help students set realistic goals for themselves, and setting realistic goals will increase the likelihood of student success and boost self-esteem.

Builds self-awareness. Self-reflection not only helps students track their progress but also enables them to understand their own learning style. This will help students to know not only where they want to go but also what strengths they can use to get there. By becoming more aware of their own strengths and limitations, students will be able to draw upon their strengths to overcome challenges.

Deepens the learning. Self-reflection encourages students to look inward and ask critical questions not only about what they’ve learned but also about how they learned it. This helps students engage in deeper learning beyond the content and encompasses their personal learning process. The learning process becomes a reward in itself.

Develops leadership skills. Self-reflection at its core can be students looking back on the day, week, semester, or year and analyzing what they did well and what they can improve. This requires high-level thinking as well as robust social and emotional awareness. These are exactly the types of skills that define true leaders. When we teach our students to routinely self-reflect, we’re also building their leadership potential.

There’s no better reward a teacher can bestow upon a student than teaching them how to identify their own strengths and areas for growth. The end of the year is a  perfect time to do this. Here are some fun ways to make this time, and other times of recognition throughout the year, more reflective:

Self-made awards

In order to make the awards process more reflective and meaningful, have students think deeply on their accomplishments and growth areas to create a specialized award for themselves. Students can then take turns publicly sharing their personalized award with their classmates, parents, and school community.

For example, a student might award themself “Amazing Artist,” “Most Likely to Be President,” or “Best Listener.” By cutting out the middleman, self-made awards promote self-awareness and empower students to identify their own strengths and talents.

Awards that Celebrate Growth

Have students make a “strengths résumé” at the beginning of the year that allows them to reflect on their strengths and identify areas to improve. They can update their résumé at the end of the year to include ways they have grown over the year. Students can share their strength résumé with their classmates and parents.

The strength résumé can also travel with the student from year to year to document growth and achievements.

Group Awards

Instead of focusing only on individual awards, students might have fun thinking up group awards for their class. Students can reflect on the favorable aspects of their class and come up with a whole-class award.

This practice will help students think interdependently and better understand that everyone benefits when we work together.

awards for Accomplishments

Another way to promote reflection, not perfection, is to reward specific skills and dispositions. Instead of giving a “Student of the Month” award, give a monthly award for a quality piece of student work, an exemplary art piece, or critical thinking skills. For example, have a monthly award that showcases “Excellent Narrative Writing Piece” or “Clearest Explanation of Mathematical Thinking.”

Teachers can also acknowledge interpersonal skills by rewarding teamwork. For example, award multiple students for “Most Cooperative Group Work.” By rewarding specific skills and dispositions rather than an individual, you’ll provide samples of excellence for students to strive toward.

Self-reflection requires courage and patience. Teaching students to be self-reflective will give them a skill that will help them throughout their lives in whatever path they choose. While it’s nice to have an award to put up on the refrigerator, becoming self-reflective is a reward in itself.

Cake Just Became A Multichain Token With This Latest Development

The PancakeSwap team stated on 10 October that they had submitted a proposal for the deployment of the Decentralized Exchange (DEX) on the recently created Aptos blockchain. On 21 October, voting officially started.

Here’s AMBCrypto’s Price Prediction for PancakeSwap(CAKE) for 2023-2023

The same day, it was announced that the vote on the deployment proposal was over and that the votes had been cast in support of the deployment to the new network.

What PancakeSwap stands to gain

Additionally, PancakeSwap will be able to establish its footprint on the network early thanks to early deployment on Aptos, giving them a chance to become the protocol’s leading decentralized exchange.

The CAKE token will also become native on Aptos after deployment, making it the first time CAKE will be accessible natively on any other chain. The implication of this is that CAKE emissions will rise as a result of its availability on both Aptos and the BNB chain.

Could PancakeSwap become dominant on Aptos?

Data from DefiLlama showed that Aptos Total Value Locked (TVL) had a value of around $15.44 million at the time of this writing. The TVL was also shown to be on the rise, having increased by over 11% during the previous 24 hours. This demonstrated the rise in TVL that the new chain was experiencing.

A thorough examination of the data revealed that a DEX, with a TVL of $10.18 million, was the greatest contributor to the TVL on Aptos. There were also two other DEXs on the chain as of the time of this writing, with a combined TVL of about $5.1 million.

According to PancakeSwap’s TVL, the DEX was locked in for almost $2.83 billion. A closer examination of the graph revealed that PancakeSwap had a 24-hour trading volume of approximately $169.34 million.

In its current form, PancakeSwap would contribute the most to the Aptos TVL and cement its domination on the network if it is deployed on the Aptos chain.

The DEX team stated that Chefs will use some Syrup Pool emissions to establish farms throughout the Aptos network. Products including Swap, Farm, Pools, and Initial Farm Offering (IFO), would be deployed.

CAKE looking delicious

The price movement produced a few higher lows, according to a 12-hour timeframe analysis of the CAKE chart that could be observed as of the time of this writing.

This suggested that the asset’s price movement was on an upward trend. However, the change did not appear to have had an immediate effect on the asset’s price as it continued to trade in the red, as it had in the previous trading session.

Further examination of the chart revealed that, due to their relative positions on the graph, the 50 Moving Average (yellow line) and the 200 Moving Average (blue line) functioned as resistance and support, respectively.

Around $4.5 and $4.7, the same position where the yellow line appeared on the chart, was where CAKE’s support zone was seen. The blue line could be noticed in the area where the support level was between $4.0 and $3.8.

The current move was nonetheless fairly amazing even though it was far from its peak. If the price were to burst beyond the yellow line’s resistance, CAKE holders would have even greater cause for celebration.

Huawei P40 Pro Revealed In Massive Leak

Huawei P40 Pro revealed in massive leak

Today the Huawei P40 Pro was leaked in a major way – just before its official reveal and release date. The Huawei P40 and Huawei P40 Pro were meant to be revealed at the same time – likely within the week – but leaksters in Germany got there first. The Huawei P40 rolls with a 6.1-inch OLED display, and the Huawei P40 Pro works with a 6.58-inch OLED display with 90Hz image refresh rate.

NOTE: This device family will launch with Huawei Mobile Services, HMS, instead of GMS, Google Mobile Services. This means it’ll not have access to Google apps, or the Google Play app store. Instead, it’ll focus on Huawei’s suite of apps.

The Huawei P40 Pro has a display that’s wrapped down its right and left sides, and runs right up unto the top and bottom frontside of its body. There’s a pill-shaped punch hole in the front upper left. In that hole, an array of cameras and sensors rests, allowing this device to surpass the abilities of almost every other phone on earth.

The front-facing cameras and sensors on this device allow 32-megapixel photos with f/2.2 apertures – the same setup on two cameras, one “main”, the other used primarily as a depth sensor. There’s also an IR sensor – infrared, for face-sensing.

Per sources working with WinFuture for leaks, we’ve got two devices here with the same processor setup. The Kirin 990 OctaCore CPU, 2x Cortex-A76 2.86 Ghz, 2x Cortex-A76 2.36 Ghz, 4x Cortex A55 1.95 Ghz will apparently be the hero, regardless of pro status.

The back-facing camera setup on the Huawei P40 Pro centers on a 50 megapixel UltraVision shooter with RYYB, 4-in-1 pixel binning, and an aperture of f/1.9. This device’s camera setup has optical image stabilization right out the gate, a 40MP camera with ultra-wide angle lens, and a 12MP “SuperSensing” camera with f/3.4 aperture.

This device family has a fingerprint sensor (fingerprint reader), proximity sensor, ambient light, compass, and an acceleration sensor. It uses a USB-C port for power and data, and sports dual-SIM card readers (2x nano-SIM), with NanoMemory – that means you’re not going to be able to use your standard microSD card from the past.

The battery in this PRO unit is a whopping 4200mAh large, while the non-pro version has a 3800mAh battery. The larger device is 158.2 x 72.6 x 8.95 mm large, while the smaller is 148.9 x 71.06 x 8.5 mm.

Sources suggest that these devices will be available in Europe within the next couple of weeks. That means they’ll likely be out for sale in stores and online inside of April, 2023. The Huawei P40 and P40 Pro will be available in a variety of colors, Silver, Gold, White, Black – and likely additional colors after initial launch.

The non-pro device will have a price somewhere around 800 Euro to start – this device won’t likely launch inside the USA. The Huawei P40 Pro also won’t likely launch inside the USA, but in Europe it’ll have a starting price of approximately 999 Euro.

Four High Chairs That Offer More Than Just A Place To Eat

It’s a relatively short but important period in your child’s life: the high chair years. That magical time when they can sit eye-level with the rest of the family, perched atop a throne-like chair, and proceed to launch, mash, and pour food stuff everywhere (including, sometimes, their mouths).

Choosing the right high chair means making a lot of choices—plastic vs. wood, multi-function or basic—so a lot depends on your specific wants. But these high chair options will deliver no matter what your needs, and no matter what they end up being covered in.

Good for children up to the age of 3 (and not exceeding 40 pounds), the Graco TableFit is a single-function high chair that offers adjustability but, most of all, reliability. You are given up to 8 different height positions, making it perfect for any dining table set up, and the seat has 3 points of recline. Best of all, the seat-pad is machine washable and the tray is dishwasher safe. The TableFit also boasts what they call the “One-Hand Harness,” which allows you to adjust the seat harness fit with, well, just one hand. This feature is not to be underestimated, as any parent who has tried to help a frustrated baby while holding a tray of food can attest. The cool black and white design also mitigates some of the visual noise pollution common with a lot of child products.

As mentioned, some products aimed at children can be garish, which is why the WeeSprout is another welcome alternative. An extremely simple, minimal design belies its versatility and ingenuity. It can go from high chair to booster to kid-sized chair, growing with your child. Combined with its sturdy and easy to clean wooden construction, the WeeSprout is a multi-year investment—something that also can’t be said of every child-centric product. Because it’s so simply crafted, it’s easy to assemble and easy to adjust. Also, it’s refreshing to have one less plastic item in any home.

As the name suggests, this Fisher-Price option is ideal for families finding themselves maxed out on space. Rather than being a full-on, free-standing high chair, the SpaceSaver attaches to a standard dining room chair. The removable tray lets is function as a high chair first, then a booster seat later, guaranteeing at least a few years of use. Fully adjustable with dishwasher-safe parts, this highchair makes sense for those unwilling to invest in a more elaborate and less practical high chair, or for those with simply not enough space to accommodate one. It’s also available in an array of muted colors.

Lest you think we’re down on all sense of fun when it comes to the design of children’s furniture, we’ll throw a spotlight on the Infantino Grow-With-Me primarily because it combines playfulness with performance. The cartoon critter seat will delight children and actually cute enough to be a welcome addition to your home. The Grow-With-Me has 4-in-1 functionality, meaning it works as a standard freestanding high chair until you remove the legs and attach the seat to a standard dining room chair to save space, then it can be adjusted and transformed into a booster seat and eventually a kid chair. It’s easy to wash and easy to assemble, a great option with a welcome sense of whimsy.
