A Quick Jist of the Eco – Parametric Workshop

The workshop was aimed to explore different materials from timber to plywood to develop surfaces, struts and nodes that are climate responsive while having a programmatic factor. It also included a descriptive narrative on how lattices, assembly sequences, digital fabrication and information extracting can be achieved through a parametric model. The workshop was focused on showcasing a dynamic aspect of parametric architecture that, is as functional and affordable while being aesthetic. 

In today’s time when core architectural studio and architects like Bjarke Ingels Group, Foster & Partners, Ai Space Factory and many more are building structures through computational methods while making them environmentally conscious, having a skill set in that direction can truly be an asset. With this intent, the workshop focused on creating unique and adaptable projects that are maximizing the use of inexpensive materials to create realistic architectural projects. A deep insight on bottom-up design and curating modular system through matrices of parametric variations were also explored. 

The eco-parametric workshop explored the bottom-up design, and how to grow modular systems through creating and learning from matrices of parametric variations. But most importantly the workshop was focused on how do we let our emotions drive us through a mathematical process. As paradoxical as it sounds. the workshop was focused on creating habitable spaces that are humane and high on computational design finesse. 

About the Tutor – Arthur Mamou-Mani

Arthur Mamou-Mani is a French architect and director of the award-winning architecture practice Mamou-Mani. The practise specializes in a new kind of digitally designed and fabricated architecture. He is also a lecturer at the University of Westminster and has given numerous talks around the world on “Eco-Parametric” architectural practice which includes two TedX conferences in the U.S. and France. He has given many lectures on eco-parametric architecture in various institutes and platforms. 

A fellow of the Royal Society for Encouragement of the Arts Manufacture and Commerce, he has won the American Architecture Prize, the RIBAj Rising Star Award. He has been awarded the prestigious Pierre Cardin Prize for Architecture from the Academie des Beaux-Arts in France.

The Architects Journal in 2023 named the architectural practice as one of its 100 ‘Disruptor’ practices that are challenging the norms of traditional architecture practice in their drive to bring about sustainable alternatives. Arthur has also founded the digital fabrication laboratory FabPub. This allows the public to experiment with large-scale laser cutting and 3D printing equipment in Hackney, London.

He studied at the École Nationale supérieure d’architecture de Paris-Malaquais and in London, in 2003, at the Architectural Association School of Architecture. He then later worked at Zaha Hadid Architects, Ateliers Jean Nouvel, and Proctor and Matthews Architects. He started teaching Diploma Studio 10 in 2011 at the University of Westminster with Toby Burgess.

He built the Burning Man Temple in 2023, Galaxia, consisting of 20 timber truss petals converging as a spiral towards one point in the sky. He is the first non-US architect selected for this piece of art. In 2023, he designed Conifera, a 3D-printed bioplastic installation for COS, during Milan design week, in the 16th-century Palazzo Isimbardi.

Day 1

The workshop started with the Introduction to parametric and timber design techniques. It included an interactive session of Arthur Mamou-Mani taking the students through some of his astounding works while interacting actively with the students. The core idea behind was to create systems and not forms. Mamou-Mani also took the students through the chronology of parametric architecture and its development over the years. 

The session included a three-hour long lecture with a 1-hour long introduction to GH Mirror lab. The session gave a concise jist of the complexity that parametric architecture can resolve through calculative methods. 

Day 2

Different new terminologies in Rhino were introduced, possibilities of each nerve to create dynamic surfaces, organic structures and creating them through computational design methods were explored.

The workshop also had an interactive student discussion through presentations on various eco-parametric designs of organic plants by exploring their growth, shape, geometries, design aesthetics, patterns, organizational principles, architectural aspects, biomimicry, etc.

Day 3

Exploring form works and 3d patterns, the know-how of the possibilities in eco-parametric architecture, studying various organic species and their design pattern, highlights the precision of various plant species were some of the topics that were explored in the workshop.

Day 4

Followed by an interesting review session of the students work with Arthur Mamou-Mani giving his insightful reviews on their works.

Day 5

Day 5 the students created parametric matrices both digitally and physically. This was followed by an interactive review session by Arthur Mamou-Mani which proved to be resourceful to the students.

Material studies, Learning about curves, workshop on grasshopper plugins to create clean geometric forms while internalizing the surfaces, etc were some of the informative learnings that helped students in creating intriguing forms.

Day 6

Day 6 mapped the project development of creating timber structures through the learning from earlier sessions. The students presented their final presentations. The session was joined by Nuru Karim, from Nudes, India as a guest juror.

Architect Nuru Karim, Founder & Principal Nudes received his Masters in Architecture and Urban-ism from the Architectural Association [AADRL] London, United Kingdom in 2006. His undergraduate studies include travel and education in the metropolis of Mumbai [KRVIA-gold medallist] and Montreal [McGill University]. He has worked for Zaha Hadid Architects in 2005 on a host of institutional projects both in competition/ schematic design and design development stages.

The ideas of the workshop were to introduce the natural environment in parametric architecture and how can we implement them in creating structures that are both aesthetic and ecological. By exploring materials and facets of the possibilities of computational methods the students did just that. They created their very own astounding end – products in a mere 6 session workshop. Interactive outdoors sessions like going to the park and observing nature and presenting their insights on the different forms or exploring the various facets of biophilic architectural possibilities in detail helped them in creating dynamic forms.

The session included the final presentation of each group to create a collaborative outcome. Students created exciting end products by applying symmetry to create a crystalline and biophilic architectural system. From various shapes like circles, spines and vectors they used the systems of rotations, double rotations, etc.

Exploring and ideating various external and internal parameters through the creation of plane sand struts helped them understand the complexity from the bottom up.

Deep insights on Mirrolab, Rhino 7 and Grasshopper helped them understand biophilic architecture through computational design methods.

The growth of digitized language in architecture has been a key issue at the beginning of the 21st century. Attempts at defining the juncture of conventional and digital architecture have existed for years, during which the digital paradigm has altered. In this way, the parametric design offers significant opportunities for architects to optimize the design process more effectively; nonetheless, its uniqueness poses certain obstacles for architects. Architecture is a very sophisticated intelligent system that continuously improves through dynamic development. When architects develop their designs by constant rethinking, this recurrent cycle of distinction and selection emerges organically. This process boosted by computer algorithms using parametric design, considering many more criteria and developing sustainable architecture. It also offers more innovative approaches for design challenges that are too complicated to be rectified by human perception.

Using parametric design can help minimize the amount of time spent on the planning process. 1. Atyrau Bridge by New Moon Architects, Kazakhstan

Atyrau Bridge, 314 meters long and 10.5 meters broad, is one of Nur-most Sultan’s most recent famous structures. It has become the finest attractive sight in the historical section of the city. 2.5  thousand separate facade components of its casing, designed in a parametric fashion, form a shelter for the public area and convey a feeling of the place.

The sturgeon bronze sculpture erected in the center of the bridge as a guardian of the location is one of the major attractions, where people follow a ritual of massaging the statue’s nose to bring good luck.

2. JetBrains Office by UNStudio, Russia

UNStudio built the new workplace of worldwide software development business JetBrains, concentrating on the development’s three attributes: Connect, Comfort, and Flexible, and fostering engagement and sustainability through its design. Based on these fundamental elements, the design concept prioritizes the comfort and well-being of all employees and visitors, emphasizing JetBrains’ unique working environment.

The project’s centerpiece is a massive, vertically tiered indoor atrium that is the major focal point. A translucent zigzag exterior chosen for the architectural style, allowing enough sunlight into the open space while preventing solar gains. Along with the open area, which is surrounded by different biophilia, there are central conference rooms, breakout areas, auditoriums, and a core restaurant.

3. Infinity Loop by Bjarke Ingels Group, China

The new OPPO R&D Headquarters, right in the heart of Yuhang District, was designed by Bjarke Ingels Group to blend elegance and modern technologies in a building that would be an environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable center for technology.

With a strategic design that balances the city’s rich fabric, natural terrain, and technical creativity, the architectural firm expressed the company’s infinite development in the quest for perfection. The southern side of the structure was extended southward to optimize sun exposure and give magnificent views of the city.

Because of its unusual form, it became self-shaded, lowering energy usage and increasing natural light, which improved staff well-being and productivity.

4. Smakkelaarsveld by Lingotto, the Netherlands

Smakkelaarsveld, near Utrecht’s central train station, will soon be transformed into a lush green space and housing complex, transforming this abandoned stretch of land into an attraction.

The consortium’s final bid was focused on parametric design, which utilizes algorithms to optimize the concept design against multiple KPIs, such as sustainability and environmental goals. It illustrates how software tools can help deliver exceptional, sustainable solutions to challenging issues.

5. Sustainable Cultural Quarter by MVRDV, the Netherlands

MVRDV’s Heuvelkwartier design suggests turning the Heuvel retail arena into a green cultural sector, speculating on the future of shopping complexes and addressing their declining visitor numbers. The proposal combines shopping, culture, and recreation by enlarging existing structures and converting the rooftops into a park.

The concept also includes a stacked cultural structure wrapped in a “glass mountain,” which will serve as a new icon for Heuvel.

6. Heart of Yongan by TJAD, China

Yong’an Village is notable for its serpentine mountain environment, low connectivity, and status as one of China’s poorest localities. The locals value the importance of seamless connection and open layout of indoor and outdoor public spaces due to their geographical position in the valley.

The project’s main approach was adopting modern construction tectonics to the traditional building. Algorithmic modeling used to create the roof’s hyperboloid shape. The key material for this design was a rammed earth wall, which was picked in response to the local culture.

The parametric single-sloped curving roof chosen because it could successfully drain water and, more significantly; it could be readily taught to people using simple math concepts. Regional blue tiles were chosen as the primary roofing material because they were long-lasting and low-maintenance.

The community center is an example of parametric design conceptualized based on sustainability principles, offering locals a sense of belonging and a familiar structure.

7. Experimental Shelter by Spacelab, Italy

Spacelab created an energy-self-sufficient structure for temporary usage. This parametric design can be constructed in any location without a foundation, leaving no trace and causing zero damage at the end of its term.

The structure dubbed Zero because it produces no waste during assembly or removal and emits zero emissions. It can be dismantled and reconstructed several times, addressing the circular economy, temporary, and reuse themes.

8. Dubai Expo 2023 – Sustainability Pavilion by Grimshaw Architects, the United Arab Emirates

Grimshaw Architects built the Sustainability Pavilion. The pavilion embodies the spirit of addressing the effect of human activities on the environment and serves as a platform for collective action. With one of the three main themes is sustainability. The Terra pavilion will serve as a framework for emphasizing the issue’s urgency, exchanging information, and developing ideas while also giving guests an interactive experience.

The design became a Science Center after the expo as one of the legacy structures. It aspires to exist as an autonomous structure for electricity and water supplies.

Fractal Design has released some fantastic gaming cases over the last 12 months with the Define R6, S2 and now the Meshify S2 all being enrolled into their ever-popular lineup of impressive gaming cases.

Today, however, we do a deep dive into their Meshify S2 gaming case to see how it compares with its predecessor and more importantly, the competition available in today’s market.

Fractal Design has never been one to waver from their signature rectangular design which has served them so well down the years and the Meshify S2 is no different. The guys at Fractal seem to have taken a lot of the design features for the Meshify directly from the Define S2 which, for me, reduced the hype which surrounded the case upon release.

This being said, after the release of the Meshify C, it’s predecessor, the guys at Fractal were bombarded with consumer feedback stating they wanted a bigger version to accommodate larger components, more radiators, and water cooling. In this instance, Fractal Design seems to have answered their prayers and then some.

Fractal Design always does a good job of making sure their high-end products are well protected during transport. Something that can’t be said for every manufacturer out there. Worth mentioning is the box itself, it has a specification table on the side making sure the consumer knows exactly whats in store.

The Meshify S2 is wrapped in a thin layer of plastic, presumably to stop potential scratches and dust entering the case. Two large polystyrene blocks go either side of the case ensuring it’s protection against drops or knocks.

Packaging addressed, the Meshify S2 comes with 3 pre-installed Dynamic X2 GP-14 140mm fans giving this case excellent temperature control right-out-the-box. Furthermore, pre-installed stand-off screws are ready to use and an accessory box comes with the following extras:

When unboxing this case, the team and I were discussing whether or not Fractal Design would have addressed some of the consumer feedback issues that resulted after the success of the Meshify C. On first impressions it certainly felt like those issues had been given some serious thought.

One of the main problems with the old Meshify C was how compact the case was, physically. There wasn’t a great deal of space for extra radiators, water cooling or even the larger GPU’s we see in today’s market.

However, with the Meshify S2, you can rest easy in the knowledge that space is not a problem. But we’ll touch on that later. For now, let’s have a look at the exterior.

Front & Rear

The front panel consists of the signature Meshify design, which for those that don’t know, is angular and extremely edgy. In a weird way, the shape reminds me of using a kaleidoscope as a child (if you don’t want to use your imagination just check the picture above).

The panel is made completely of mesh which promotes excellent airflow, one of the cases main features, and has a plastic edge that clips into the chassis itself. You can remove the front panel completely by pulling with moderate force, but be aware, the I/O panel cables are quite taught so don’t be pulling too hard.

Pulling the front panel off gives you access to the dual Dynamic X2 GP-14 140mm fans which can be swapped and cleaned with little to no fuss. The bottom of the case also has a mesh cover and has to be extracted before you can remove the front panel. The handle is situated underneath the front panel and is very easy to remove.

The rear is designed in the exact same fashion as other S2 models, boasting 7 horizontal expansion slots and 2 vertical. The vertical slots being purposely engineered for mounting GPU’s vertically inside the case for additional aesthetic appeal.

You will notice the side panel thumbscrews at the rear which are bolt-free and easy to manage. You will also find the release button for the roof mesh (this is the only way to remove the roof panel).

Finally comes the third 140mm fan which is situated in the usual position and does a fantastic job creating a clean airflow stream.

Side Panels

The side panels on this case have push-to-lock technology and don’t actually require thumb-screws to hold them in place. The component side panel is made of tempered glass with a metal frame for ease of use whereas the back panel is a solid sheet of metal to hide that pesky cable management.

The tinted glass that is used on the front panel gives an impressive aesthetic and looks great when pairing it with some vibrant RGB components. It’s worth mentioning if, for whatever reason, you aren’t a fan of a glass side panel, you do have the option to swap it out for a solid metal panel. Obviously, this would have to be purchased at an additional cost though.

Roof

The Meshify S2, unlike its predecessor, has a removable roof panel which is great especially from a build perspective. It has a radiator mount pre-installed and a mesh panel over the top (2 separate pieces) for those wanting to really bolster their cooling and install additional fans. The mount has the ability to accommodate 3 x 120mm fans respectively and can be plugged directly into the PWM controller at the rear.

You can switch this panel for glass if you require but we feel the guys at Fractal have done a wonderful job designing this case and wouldn’t bother.

Let’s take a look inside..

We wasted no time jumping inside this case and to our surprise, the changes that have been made from the Meshify C are exponential.

The most noticeable difference is just how much space you have to play with. The case has E-ATX motherboard support and even then, the space that is left would easily accommodate a radiator and a water cooling setup.

At the foot of the case is a full-length PSU shroud, the same you will find in the Define S2, and does an excellent job of being practical and functional. The pre-drilled holes allow you to easily fit a vertical GPU mount or reposition the SSD mounts which are currently situated behind the motherboard.

The grommeted holes are in the ideal location for ease-of-use, however, just like the Define, the I/O panel USB 3.0 cable could have been a touch longer to aid in the build process. Apart from that though, the grommets do an excellent job in taming the cable management leaving next to nothing exposed.

If you’re looking to build a rig which boasts water cooling you’re in luck, the newly designed interior has a tonne of different reservoir mounting spots to make life that much easier.

Behind the motherboard plate, you will find the PCB controller which can accommodate up to nine fans respectively. Unlike the Define, the Meshify S2 doesn’t come with a fan controller so software will have to be installed to alter the speed they run at. Not a big deal though.

The 3 hard drive bays are found in the same spot as the PCB controller and have been finished with a caged effect. They screw in with a handy thumb-screw and can be utilized for cable management if free.

Features

When the Meshify C was released, it immediately became a hit with the consumer for a number of different reasons. One of the main reasons was the feature & benefits it came equipped with. They have kept the same mindset with the new iteration and have packed this case with even more features than before:

Tinted bolt-free tempered glass panel – What better way to showcase your components than a glass side panel, I’ll tell you what, a tinted glass side panel. The beauty of the tinted glass is that it only truly show’s off the RGB components and hides some of the other messier areas of the build.

3 x 140mm Dynamic X2 fans- The Meshify S2 comes equipped with 3 x 140mm fans which have been custom designed to increase airflow. The unique design works perfectly with the shape of the mesh front in augmenting air intake providing even better cooling potential.

Built-in pump & reservoir support –  Unlike other cases of a similar ilk, the Meshify comes to the table with pre-installed pump and reservoir support thanks to a well-designed wall situated at the front of the case.

Additional Cooling bracket for triple-fan roof support – The case is already cool and provides adequate temperatures thanks to the 3 pre-installed fans. This being said, you do have the option to mount additional fans on the roof and floor of the case thanks to mounts that are ready to use straight out the box.

Full-length PSU shroud – Cable management is always extremely high on the priority list of consumers looking to purchase cases with tempered glass. The PSU shroud does a superb job of managing most of the cables and gives the interior a stylish finish which looks great in all black.

Pre-drilled vertical 2.5 slot GPU support – For those wanting to really push the boat out in terms of aesthetics, you’ll be really happy to hear the Meshify S2 comes with pre-drilled vertical GPU mounting holes. Even though it’s only small, it certainly goes a long way in making a tricky build a little easier.

Meshify C vs Meshify S2

If you aren’t aware, the Meshify S2 was designed off the back of consumer feedback they received from Meshify C customers. This being said, it would be stupid not to compare the 2 to see how much criticism Fractal took on board.

One of the main problems with the Meshify C was its size. Consumers loved the design and features but didn’t have enough space to accommodate cooling extras and larger hardware components. Thankfully, Fractal has addressed this issue by making the Meshify S2 much larger than it’s predecessor. A feature that is sure to please the masses.

The second difference I noticed was how the roof panel of the S2 can now be popped off, unlike the C. The C had a grill-style roof with a mesh plate that sat on top, however, the S2 has been equipped with a versatile, exchangeable roof panel which offers much more practicality.

The interior grommet holes have been re-designed in the S2 and give much better cable management options. Furthermore, the glass panel on the C was comprised of a single piece of glass whereas the S2 has a steel frame making it much easier to take on and off.

Overall, the S2 is a much bigger, more practical case that offers the consumer much more versatility when building their perfect PC. It’s great to see a company take criticism on board and design a product based upon the feedback left by their customers

Buildability

We finally come to the part where we actually use this case in a real-life situation. It’s always good hearing about the potential features and benefits, but without physically putting them into practice it’s hard to know whether they’re practical or not. So let’s get into it.

For this particular build, we used an ATX motherboard (Rog Strix), EVGA 1080 TI black edition and Seasonic 500W power supply. It has a Be Quiet CPU cooler attached and some other bits.

As soon as we fitted the motherboard into place we noticed how much space we had to play with. We did test fit an E-ATX in place to see where the grommet holes would line up and to no one’s surprise, saw they were positioned nicely out of the way.

At this stage, we checked to see how the cable management was developing, and to our surprise, it looked quite neat already. The case comes with Fractal Design’s signature Velcro straps which are used to aid in cable management, however, we decided against using them as we thought the positioning wasn’t best suited for our needs.

Like all cases, the CPU power cable was a bit of a pain to get through the grommet and back into the motherboard but by no means the worst we’ve ever used.

The drive bays were extremely handy when it came to additional cable management but wasn’t really necessary as the back is covered by the metal panel.

Once the build was complete and we fired it up, you really get a feel for what this thing would look like with a decent water cooling setup installed and some extra RGB. We were left with a tonne of room, more than enough to accommodate the best water cooling setups

It’s also worth mentioning that our build didn’t make use of a great deal of RGB, however, aesthetically it still looked fantastic from all angles. If you wanted to, you could make something really special using this case as a base.

Our Verdict

We finally come to our verdict… and for me, it’s an easy one.

The Meshify S2 is an extremely good case that takes all of the quality features found in the Meshify C and refines them into a much more versatile, larger version. The aesthetic design of this case is absolutely brilliant, however, the true star of the show is its functionality.

Whether you’re building a water-cooled powerhouse or an E-ATX multi-tasking colossus, you’ll be confident that the Meshify S2 has the ability to house anything you have to throw at it.
