Conclusion

For most devices, .shsh2 blobs can be saved with TSS Saver in a matter of moments. Devices with an A12, A12X, or newer chip (iPhone XS and above), must follow a slightly more involved process to save valid blobs.

Can We Decarbonize Surgical Healthcare?

In 2023, President Biden pledged to cut domestic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 50 to 52 percent by 2030. To achieve this target, the administration intends to reduce tailpipe emissions and boost the efficiency of cars and trucks. Plans to decarbonize buildings by supporting energy efficiency upgrades and electrification are also in place.

However, another area deserves attention: the US health care sector. In 2023, the GHG emissions of this $4.1 trillion sector reached 1,692 kilograms per capita, which is the highest rate among industrialized nations and about 25 percent of global health sector emissions. A 2024 study published in Health Affairs found the health care sector responsible for about 8.5 percent of the country’s total GHG emissions. 

Here’s how the medical community can play its role in climate change mitigation efforts by significantly reducing waste and carbon output.

The health care sector is an underestimated source of greenhouse gas emissions

Medical care often is carbon-intensive. It is an underappreciated contributor to GHG emissions, says Nicholas Berlin, national clinician scholar at the University of Michigan Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation. 

For example, he adds that surgery and anesthesia are highly carbon-intensive processes due to the use of volatile anesthetic gasses, single-use equipment, and energy-intensive technologies such as robotic-assisted procedures. A single operation is estimated to produce approximately 814 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to that of driving 2,273 miles in an average combustion engine car.

GHG emissions can also stem directly from the operations of health care facilities, sources of energy, heating and cooling, and the supply chain of health care services and goods, says Victor J. Dzau, president of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM).

Increasing GHG emissions exacerbates global warming and significantly contributes to worsening air pollution, increased frequency of extreme weather events such as wildfires and heatwaves, and disrupted food systems. These environmental impacts result in various health threats, such as asthma, food, water, vector-borne diseases, and malnutrition. The health damages stemming from the pollution caused by the US health care sector are estimated to be the same degree as the deaths from preventable medical errors.

“It must be underscored that the health impacts of climate change are disproportionately and most acutely felt by people of color and historically marginalized and disenfranchised communities,” says Dzau. If global warming reaches 2 degrees Celsius, Black communities would be 40 percent more likely to live in areas with the highest projected increases in extreme temperature-related deaths. Meanwhile, Hispanic and Latino individuals would be 50 percent more likely to live in areas with the highest estimated increases in traffic delays because of increased coastal flooding. 

According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), the direct damage cost of climate change to health would be about $2 to 4 billion per year by 2030. Decarbonizing health care is an opportunity to improve health for everyone and reduce the financial costs of care and disease burden, says Dzau.

Decarbonizing surgical care is possible

Surgery is a significant contributor to GHG emissions. The mean energy usage of operating rooms by surface area is three to six times that of the hospital building average. The use of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to maintain a sterile surgical environment account for roughly 40 percent of health care emissions.

Fortunately, there are many structural opportunities to employ sustainable practices in surgical practice—specifically, surgical oncology health care—as outlined in a 2024 paper published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. “If we are going to reduce emissions according to the objectives outlined by President Biden, then changes to the healthcare sector will inevitably play a critical role,” says Berlin, an author of the paper.

Widespread changes within a short period, if not thoughtfully implemented, may disrupt existing delivery systems and affect the quality of care. Therefore, he adds, we need to start with the “low-hanging fruit” first, like reducing the number of volatile anesthetic gasses used in operating rooms.

Inhaled anesthetic agents like nitrous oxide or desflurane account for more than half of emissions associated with surgical care. Nitrous oxide can persist in the atmosphere for 114 years. Meanwhile, desflurane has the highest global warming potential among inhaled anesthetic agents, and using it for an hour has the same carbon footprint as driving 230 miles.

Limiting wasteful single-use products in the operating room, like switching to reusable surgical gowns and reprocessed single-use devices instead of disposable gowns and virgin-produced medical devices, would also be beneficial.

Another strategy is to remove unnecessary or rarely used sterile instruments in standard procedural trays, which helps minimize waste and energy consumption related to instrument sterilization. A 2024 study published in the Journal of Neurosurgery found that the neurosurgical department at the University of California, San Francisco wasted $2.9 million in unused supplies annually. Some of the most frequently wasted surgical supplies include the Raytex sponge gauze, Surgifoam, and Surgicel Nu-Knit.

Choosing to source surgical supplies from local suppliers may also diminish the environmental impact of operating rooms by reducing the transport-related use of fossil fuels. Furthermore, Berlin recommends embracing telehealth as a convenient option and less carbon-intensive modality for patients with long travel distances. Compared to the average in-person visit, greater integration of telemedicine, wherever appropriate, minimizes emissions per appointment by 40 to 70 times because it reduces the carbon costs of traveling to and from the clinic by car or taxi services.

“Altogether, improving the carbon footprint of the entire healthcare ecosystem will have immense health, social, and economic benefits,” says Dzau. “[It] could serve as a catalyst for other sectors to improve their own carbon footprint and sustainability efforts as well.”

Can Smartphone Apps Track Covid

In California, early signs have begun to appear that the state’s swift and aggressive social distancing measures have slowed the spread of COVID-19. Now, the city of San Francisco is assembling a task force to prevent the disease from surging back once they relax stay-at-home orders. They plan to do so by tracking down everyone who has come into contact with those who test positive for COVID-19.

This technique, known as contact tracing, will be necessary across the United States to tamp down transmission levels until a vaccine comes along; a similar effort is already ramping up in Massachusetts. However, traditional contact tracing is time and labor-intensive, and will be difficult for public health officials to enact on the scale needed across the country. It also depends on people’s ability to remember everybody who they encountered over the preceding two weeks. But research groups across the U.S. are creating tech they hope will help.

“We’re looking at probably some sort of automated technology-based contact tracing, I think, if we want to be realistic,” says Tyler Yasaka, a software engineer and junior specialist in otolaryngology at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. He and his colleagues are among many teams of researchers around the world who have developed mobile apps to track the spread of COVID-19.

Multiple governments around the world have begun using location data from smartphones to monitor people’s movements, and this is not always done anonymously. In South Korea, developers have also offered several smartphone apps that plot the locations of people who have been diagnosed with COVID-19. But this approach invades people’s privacy and raises significant concerns about surveillance. That’s why Yasaka—as well as other groups led by MIT researchers and Apple and Google—are focusing their efforts on apps that don’t collect personal information or data on people’s locations. Instead, they anonymously link interactions between people.

The apps developed by Apple and Google and by the collaboration of researchers at MIT and other institutions rely on short-range Bluetooth signals, similarly to Apple’s “Find My” feature for locating lost devices. Each phone would automatically store a list of anonymous signals it has “overheard” from other nearby phones; when somebody is diagnosed with COVID-19, they could upload the list on their phone to a database. The apps would then alert the other users who recently came into contact with that person.

As with the other apps, people who test positive for COVID-19 can report their status anonymously and people linked to their chain of transmission would be notified that they may have been exposed to the virus. Yasaka and his team have already created a beta version of the app.

“As you move from one checkpoint to another those checkpoints do get connected together, but your identity is not involved in that and the app specifically never collects any information about you,” he says. “The whole process should take about five or ten seconds; you don’t have to download or register anything.”

However, one challenge for all of these apps will be ensuring enough people use them to create an accurate picture of COVID-19 transmission.

“I actually think there is value in having something that is an active and social process,” Yasaka says. When somebody scans a QR code, people around them will notice. “If other people are doing it, that might prompt you to also take part in it,” he says. Peer pressure also might help. If your friends are meeting up (once social distancing measures relax, that is) they can encourage you to do it with them, Yasaka says.

Another issue is making sure the self-reported data is accurate. If people don’t share their diagnoses or incorrectly report that they have COVID-19 that could make the app less effective. Coordinating with public health authorities could help prevent this from happening, Yasaka says. Authorized users who deliver test results to people could print out a QR code and ask folks if they would like to scan it to the app to notify others that they may be at risk. “That little prompt could help participation be higher,” Yasaka says.

He is currently discussing possible opportunities to collaborate with the team behind the MIT app, which is part of the university’s Private Automated Contact Tracing (PACT) project. Ideally, Yasaka would like TrackCOVID to be ready for widespread use by the end of summer. However, all of these apps will need to be evaluated by scientists and other experts before they can be broadly adopted, he adds.

Even then, they will not stall COVID-19 entirely. But reliable contact tracing and extensive testing are key for easing widespread lockdowns and intense social distancing without causing the disease to return in fresh waves that are as deadly as the initial outbreak. Apps such as the ones envisioned by Yasaka, the PACT team, and Apple and Google would complement old-fashioned contact tracing efforts, such as the ones underway in San Francisco and Massachusetts.

“Manual contact tracing is the premier, the gold standard for how this should be done,” said Ron Rivest, the principal investigator of MIT’s PACT project, in a public webinar the university hosted on April 16. “Automated contact tracing is not a replacement for that.”

He and his colleagues stressed that another crucial element for successfully deploying contact tracing apps is openness between groups working on different approaches.

“This is not an MIT effort, this is not a U.S. effort or a Massachusetts effort,” Rivest said. “This is a worldwide effort to get us all on the same side and work together to defeat the coronavirus. Collaboration is the key here.”

How Ecommerce Websites Can Achieve E

When Google updated their Search Quality Rater Guidelines in July this year, the concept of E-A-T (Expertise, Authority, Trust) gained spotlight once again.

The updated guidelines increased the focus on E-A-T, as well as the author of the content as an individual – not just the authority of the website/brand as an entity.

For ecommerce websites, achieving E-A-T is a balance of optimizing page formats and content design for conversion and achieving the necessary on-page signals that Google is looking for.

This is especially important seeing as ecommerce pages will likely fall under the category of YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) pages, meaning the information displayed on those pages will be expected to be of the highest accuracy, and trustworthiness.

What the Guidelines Say

When it comes to E-A-T for product category and individual product pages, the concept differs to that of long-form content and blog articles.

For an ecommerce site, authoritative text on pages isn’t enough. All features and elements of the page contribute to the perceived user quality.

In April 2024, Moz published a Whiteboard Friday video that I think gives a great breakdown on the type of content you need to include on product pages. It also ties in with the idea of search intent – and optimizing pages to match search queries, not just those with the highest CPC average monthly search volumes.

This ties in with what Google outlines in their guidelines as to what they expect to see when looking for E-A-T on ecommerce websites.

For the quality raters, whose influence is only minor, to establish the E-A-T of your commerce pages, there are certain elements they need to be able to clearly identify to score expertise, authority, and trust.

Within the rater guidelines themselves, as an example of high-quality E-A-T for shopping pages, Google gives the example of the chúng tôi Deluxe Book Pack product page. This page demonstrates:

Very high level of E-A-T for the purpose of the page.

Very positive reputation (website).

A satisfying or comprehensive amount of high-quality main content (MC).

So how can this be achieved by all ecommerce site owners?

What Demonstrates Expertise?

The examples provided within the guidelines suggest that what counts as expertise for a commerce page are:

The expertise and reputation of the product manufacturer.

The expertise and reputation of the brand in regard to the products being sold.

“recommendations by experts, news articles, and other credible information…”

This highlights the importance of traditional marketing, public relations, and outreach (not for links) and how they impact SEO efforts.

Simply put: real businesses do real marketing activities and make real noise both online and offline, and people talk about it.

Expertise is something granted by your peers and isn’t something that can always be credibly self-assigned.

In order to receive peer recommendations and have others talking about the brand and website online, you need to work on your reputation.

You can do this by:

Actively engaging with other members of the industry and contributing to content.

Taking newsworthy actions such as sponsorship deals and charity donations.

Even tactics more closely related to backlink generation, such as sending out products for review.

These are all activities genuine businesses engage in.

What’s the opportunity cost of not doing activities such as these?

You will have less of a reputation online and within your peers than those who have actively engaged in these promotions.

Reputation requires a lot of trust and editorial freedom.

What Demonstrates Authority?

Because the store produces this backpack, they are experts on the product, making the page on their own website authoritative.

This implies that for content to be authoritative in Google’s eyes, the content must be coming from either the manufacturer or an industry expert.

On this basis, a smaller ecommerce site with limited reach could be considered to have authority if it claims to be the authority over its own products.

A good example of this would be within a small niche, where an ecommerce site caters for a specific and specialist line of products.

Likewise, a larger ecommerce site asking as a marketplace for a number of different manufacturers and products can be verified much more easily, and if they do have affiliations with those sellers.

This is especially important when dealing with high value, luxury products that are often the focus of misrepresentation online.

Rolex, for example, is a prestigious and sought-after brand but cannot be sold online.

This Rolex listing can be verified as genuine immediate because:

There is no option to purchase the item directly online, instead a number of CTAs to inquire about the product

There is a prominent “Rolex Official Retailer” badge in the top left, which links through to the Rolex site.

The page itself is hosted on chúng tôi but a part of the retailer’s main navigation.

What Demonstrates Trust?

From experience, this is where conflicts between SEO and design come into play.

Essentially, any potential questions, concerns, or additional queries that a user may have regarding the product or service should be openly addressed – especially if competitors selling the same (or similar) openly address them.

At the risk of having long pages, information should be comprehensive and readily available.

As a best practice, ensure that product pages contain:

Information about delivery costs and durations.

Any other additional costs, taxes, or tariffs that could be incurred shipping to specific locations.

Return policies, product guarantees, and other similar information should be accessible.

Company contact information, live chat, customer support, and FAQs all should be easy to find.

It’s also important to remember that Google is considering this information to be a part of the main content of the page, and not support content. This should also be reflected in site design and, where possible, accessible with JavaScript disabled or visible on page load.

Other and more obvious ways of earning trust include gaining reviews and having a secure website.

When it comes to reviews, a study conducted by the Association for Psychological Science found that users are swayed more by the number of reviews, rather than the overall review score itself.

A second study conducted by the Northwestern University’s Spiegel Research Center also found that users tend to trust overall review scores between 4.2 and 4.5 (out of five), as higher overall scores raised suspicion.

Can Microsoft Beat Google In Tablets?

Microsoft has a blind spot that prevents the company from succeeding in mobile: It tends to put the right operating system on the wrong device.

For years, Microsoft shoehorned Windows CE, and then Windows Mobile, into mobile phones. The operating system’s user interface was all wrong for a phone. It required a stylus, and involved off-putting user interface elements like a Windows-style Start button with cascading menus.

The user interface would have much better on a tablet device, and the performance would’ve been great. However, Microsoft insisted that partners install full-fledged Windows on tablets.

As a result of this mismatch, both the phones and the tablets failed in the market year after year.

When Microsoft led the whole Ultra-Mobile PC initiative, the company correctly foresaw the coming importance of mobile devices. But by insisting on Windows Vista as the operating system, rather than a cell phone operating system, Microsoft assured failure once again.

Then consumers gravitated to netbooks. At first Microsoft tried to cram (again) an operating system that was too big for the platform: Windows Vista. But netbook buyers insisted on “lite” software, preferring Linux and then Windows XP.

Windows CE and Windows mobile would have enabled pen-based tablets and ultra-mobile PCs to succeed far more than they have done.

Microsoft finally has a right-sized operating system: Windows Phone 7. It’s right enough for phones, but even righter for tablets.

Why “Tablets Are Cannibalizing Netbooks”

A Microsoft executive admitted this week that “tablets are cannibalizing netbooks.” This is euphemistic corporate spin.

Let me translate: Apple is destroying Microsoft in mobile. “Tablets” is code for iPad, which owns 95% of a rapidly growing market. The netbook market, which is rapidly dying, is dominated by Windows.

The iPad is winning for many reasons, but one of them is that its iOS is right-sized for the platform. The iPad has a netbook-sized screen, but runs what is essentially a cell phone operating system. By downsizing the OS and the hardware, Apple was able to achieve a low-enough-but-profitable price, zippy performance and amazing battery life.

Had Apple followed the Microsoft approach, it would have launched the iPad with OS X running on it. It would have touted the ability of the device to run desktop OS X apps. But it would have cost $1,800, gotten three hours of battery life, weighed three pounds and it would have been slow.

Google will also succeed in tablets in part because Android is also essentially a cell phone operating system.

There is absolutely no question that for a tablet to compete, it must run a cell phone operating system.

If — despite overwhelming, inescapable evidence and proof for this most basic fact of today’s mobile market — Microsoft fails to put its Windows Phone 7 OS on tablets, then we can safely write off Microsoft in the mobile market.

We can finally say: Microsoft has a fatal blind spot and that it will not and cannot succeed in mobile.

But I don’t think that’s going to happen.

What Ballmer Said About Tablets

In a recent interview with Ars Technica, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer hinted that Windows Phone 7-based tablets are in the works. In a discussion about tablets, Ballmer said: “You’ll see some things as you move Windows Phone along.”

Ballmer’s vague statement is vaguely encouraging. But the company will have to do more than just slap Windows Phone 7 on tablets. First, it has to be willing to compete with Android on price.

Second, Microsoft has to be willing to cannibalize existing businesses in mobile operating systems, tablet operating systems and applications. It needs to get behind the mobile tablet business with all its resources, cultivate massive development on these platforms and offer a compelling line of its own applications — sorry “apps.”

You may see a message that goes something like “Sorry, we’re not speaking right now” as has been the case with this user. This limitation may be temporary and you may get access to the AI chatbot after a few hours. 

Can you report My AI to Snapchat?

Yes. According to Snapchat, My AI itself can sometimes use inappropriate words or repeat them. Although the chances of that happening to you are unlikely (only 0.01% of all responses have been flagged as non-conforming), you can report your conversations with My AI to Snapchat if you deem the responses from the chatbot as harmful.

To report a message sent by My AI, tap and hold on the response you want to report and select Report from the options that appear on the screen. From here, you can state your reasons why you think the response could be harmful and then tap on Submit to share your report with Snapchat.
