Apple has always taken great lengths with its devices’ cameras, so both products offer quality photo-taking tech. The iPad Pro has two rear cameras: a 12MP Wide and a 10MP Ultra Wide camera, accompanied by a 12MP Ultra Wide front camera with a TrueDepth system.

The iPad Air has a 12MP Wide rear Camera and a 12MP Ultra Wide front camera. It doesn’t leverage a TrueDepth system, so the iPad Pro will take better pictures in low-light environments. If this is important to you, the iPad Pro is the better option.

Specs

Both slates run on the same cutting-edge M1 chip processor, which is the latest chip made by Apple. This will ensure users have the same speed and power on whichever device is chosen. When it comes to RAM and storage, the iPad Pro can have up to 2TB of flash storage and 16GB of RAM, while the iPad Air can reach 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM.

Both the iPad Pro and Air have almost the same battery capacity: 29 Watt-hours. That is why Apple lists both devices’ batteries as equal, with “up to 10 hours of surfing the web on Wi‑Fi or watching videos and up to 9 hours of surfing the web using cellular data network.”

Performance

Performance overall will depend on how much the consumer is willing to invest in the iPad. Due to both devices having the same M1 chip, they both have the reliability of an 8-core CPU, 8-core Graphics, and a next-gen Neural engine, which is nearly equivalent to desktop Mac performance. 

The main difference here comes in the device’s RAM capabilities. The larger the RAM capacity, the faster and smoother the experience. Accessories

If you’re an Apple Pencil user, then this difference may be a deal breaker for you. For starters, the budget iPad only supports the first-generation Apple Pencil, which means that you might need to buy an adapter to be able to pair and charge it. 

The first-generation Apple Pencil is heavier and longer. It also has a cap that needs to be removed when charging. Most importantly, it doesn’t magnetically snap to the side of the iPad. That said, if you heavily rely on an Apple Pencil for note-taking or illustrations, or want to use the Apple Pencil 2, then you may want to get an iPad Air instead.

Both support external keyboards. The iPad Air works well with a Magic Keyboard and its own Smart Keyboard Folio, while the iPad (10th generation) works seamlessly with its Magic Keyboard Folio.

Which is best all comes down to what you want to do with a tablet. For entertainment, web browsing, email, social networks, games, photography and video, the iPad wins. It’s also a lot cheaper than the Surface Pro 3. A lot. If you need a tablet that’s also a fully-fledged laptop on which you can run business software, your only option among the two devices here is the Surface Pro 3. Kind of obvious, really. But it bears thinking about: if you don’t want two devices – a laptop and a tablet – the Surface Pro 3 is the best choice at the moment. It’s not cheap, for sure, but it has the big screen, surprisingly slim dimensions and weight and will comfortably run any Windows software you care to install.

Surface Pro 3 vs iPad Air 2: UK price

The iPad Air 2 starts at the usual £399 for the 16GB WiFi-only model. There’s no 32GB model, but the 64GB Wi-Fi iPad Air 2 costs the same as last year’s 32GB iPad Air at £479. For a little more, you can have the 16GB LTE iPad Air 2. You can also have the 128GB Wi-Fi only- and cellular iPad Air 2s. These cost £559 and £659 respectively.

Surface Pro 3 starts at £639 inc VAT for a Core i3 device with 64GB storage. Upgrade to the 128GB Core i5 version and you will pay out £849 inc VAT (but right now there’s £100 off). The other Core i5 version has a 256GB SSD and costs £999 inc VAT with the current £110 discount). If you need a Core i7, prepare to pay hundreds of pounds more. These are laptop prices – and expensive ones at that.

Surface Pro 3 vs iPad Air 2: Design and build

The Surface Pro 3 has a 12in screen. That’s important. It’s an inch and a half bigger than the older Surface Pros and it makes a heck of a difference. It’s still smaller than a 13.3in laptop, but it’s a lot more usable as a laptop than the 10.6in Surface Pro 2, for example.

It’s just over 2in bigger than the iPad Air 2 with its 9.7in screen and has a high resolution of 2160×1440. The iPad sticks with the usual 2048×1536, so they really only differ in aspect ratio with the Surface opting for an unusual photo-style 3:2 and the iPad having a non-widescreen 4:3 ratio.

The Surface Pro 3 is thin for its size at just over 9mm and weighs 800g. The Air 2 is an astonishing 6.1mm thick and weighs less than 470g.

The kickstand isn’t limited to two positions as with its predecessors, so you can place it at just the right angle, right down to almost flat against the desk. The keyboard is cleverer too, with a bi-fold that gives it a slight angle rather than being parallel with the desk. The only downer is that you’ll have to pay for the keyboard separately as it’s an option: it will set you back a further £110.

The iPad Air 2 is a totally different proposition. It’s far easier to hold in one hand and is obviously more portable than the Surface Pro 3. Its smaller screen has a higher pixel density than its rival – 264ppi vs 216ppi – but both are excellent displays.

Both are now fully laminated which makes them thinner and feel more solid (the original iPad Air sounded hollow when tapped). It also brings text and images closer to the front glass. In turn this makes them look more ‘real’ and also cuts down on glare. Apple has added an anti-reflective coating to the Air 2 which really helps.

Surface Pro 3 vs iPad Air 2: Performance

It’s also fast in general use, which isn’t to be underestimated. There’s never a hint of lag while navigating iOS and apps launch in a snap. It’s a great gaming device, too. The integrated GPU is capable of running games which put some consoles to shame, and it has a lot of potential for titles which will be released in the future. In the GFXBench T-Rex test, it managed 48.3fps. That’s more than double the 22.9fps of the first iPad Air.

As we say in our full iPad Air 2 review, it’s the new benchmark to which other tablets will have to measure up.

Performance from the Surface Pro 3 will depend on the model you buy, but suffice to say that the Core i7 models will not disappoint. It’s probably worth avoiding the base i3 version if you can: the Core i5 with double the storage is worth the extra money.

Unlike traditional laptops, the Surface Pro 3 boots in just a few seconds which makes it feel more like a tablet.

Apple claims 10 hours of battery life, and Microsoft 9 hours. Clearly, the actual time between charges will depend on what you’re using them for: playing demanding games non-stop will reduce these figures to perhaps four hours or so.

The iPad easily beats the Surface Pro 3 for photo and video quality from its main 8Mp camera. Whether this is important to you is a valid question: most people considering a Pro 3 won’t be worrying about whether it will take a good shot of their favourite band at a concert. It should be a similar story for the iPad, but the Air 2 is so light that it’s no wonder we see so many people using their tablet for taking videos of their grandkids (for example).

For front cameras, the Surface Pro 3 has a 5Mp camera against the iPad’s 1.2Mp webcam.

So which is best? It all comes down to what you want to do with your tablet. For entertainment, web browsing, email, social networks, games, photography and video, the iPad wins. It’s also a lot cheaper than the Surface Pro 3. A lot.

If you need a tablet that’s also a fully-fledged laptop on which you can run business software, your only option among the two devices here is the Surface Pro 3. Kind of obvious, really. But it bears thinking about: if you don’t want two devices – a laptop and a tablet – the Surface Pro 3 is the best choice at the moment. It runs Windows 8.1 Pro, so should be welcomed into any corporate environment. The iPad Air 2, on the other hand, may have Touch ID, but isn’t as likely to be considered a ‘work’ device. The Surface Pro 3 isn’t cheap, for sure, but it has the big screen, surprisingly slim dimensions and weight and will comfortably run any Windows software you care to install.

You can assign a math problem as your task or a memory game or shaking your phone for say 30 times or taking a specific picture. But none of the tasks are easy, if you think that you can keep math problem as your task, then you won’t be asked to solve 2+2 or something like that. Sleep if you can.

Explaining the terms What is HTTP?

HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) is an application layer protocol that transfers information, such as text, images, audio, video, etc., between clients and web servers.

What is an HTTP proxy?

An HTTP proxy is an intermediary that receives and forwards HTTP requests between client machines and web servers. 

What is a SOCKS proxy?

SOCKS, which stands for Socket Secure, is an internet protocol that operates at OSI Layer 5

A SOCKS proxy server uses TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) connections to accept client connection requests. SOCKS proxies, as opposed to HTTP proxies, receive and forward HTTP, HTTPS, SMTP, and FTP requests. HTTP proxies are used to transfer HTTP or HTTPS information between a client and server. 

What’s the difference between SOCKS4 and SOCKS5?

SOCKS proxies are classified into two types: SOCKS4 and SOCKS5. SOCKS4 and SOCKS5 are network protocols that handle incoming and outgoing traffic between clients and servers. Even though SOCKS proxies use these two protocols, there are some differences between SOCKS4 and SOCKS5 (see Figure 1).

Explained features:

TCP connection and UDP connection: TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) and UDP (User Datagram Protocol) are communication protocols that allow data to be transmitted between a user and a web server. SOCKS4 only supports TCP connections, whereas SOCKS5 supports both UDP and TCP. 

Authentication: Unlike SOCKS4, SOCKS5 proxies provide several authentication methods to verify user identity while connecting to a proxy server, including null authentication, username/password authentication, and GSS-API authentication.

SSH tunneling: Another key difference between SOCKS4 and SOCKS5 is that a SOCKS5 proxy uses secure shell (SSH) encrypted tunneling to secure data transmissions. 

How do they work?  SOCKS proxy

SOCKS proxies use Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) to transfer data between a client and a web server. Unlike the UDP protocol, which is used by HTTP proxies, TCP establishes a connection between the client and the server to ensure that data reaches its intended destination. After establishing the connection, the SOCKS proxy transmits incoming and outgoing data between the client and the destination. This slows down data transmission in the TCP protocol but ensures that data is delivered to the correct destination.

SOCKS proxies, as previously stated, use two SOCKS protocol types: SOCKS4 and SOCKS5. SOCKS5 is an enhanced version of SOCKS4. Unlike SOCKS4, SOCKS5 encrypts data in a  network traffic using the SSH (Secure Shell) encrypted tunneling method (see Figure 2).

HTTP proxy

An HTTP proxy communicates with web servers on behalf of the client who makes a connection request to servers by hiding their IP addresses. It monitors and transfers both incoming and outgoing HTTP data. We explained how HTTP proxies work in six steps with a high-level diagram (see Figure 3):

A client sends an HTTP request to the targeted website. 

HTTP proxy creates a tunnel between client and destination web server. 

HTTP proxy receives the request and assigns the client a different IP address to hide their real IP address. 

HTTP proxy makes the connection on behalf of the client. 

Once the website accepts the connection request, HTTP proxy accesses the website and forwards the requested HTTP information to the client.

Advantages of SOCKS proxies

A SOCKS5 proxy is more secure than an HTTP proxy because it supports multiple authentication methods to prevent unauthorized clients from connecting to the server.

Unlike SOCKS proxies, HTTPS proxies only use the HTTP protocol. While HTTP proxy servers can only process HTTP and HTTPs traffic between the client and the web server, SOCKS proxies can process a variety of protocols, including HTTP, FTP, and SMTP.

A SOCKS5 proxy is faster than an HTTP proxy since it supports UDP connections. UDP is faster and more efficient than TCP.

Advantages of HTTP/HTTPS proxies

HTTP(s) proxies provide an extra layer of security between the client and the server. Because data is encrypted with HTTPs proxies, no one can access incoming and outgoing network traffic (see Figure 4). Only the client, proxy server, and the destination web server can see what data is sent over the network.

HTTP proxies can interpret data in network traffic. HTTP proxies filter or restrict specific web content to protect the user’s machine from malicious activity. This is especially useful in web scraping projects. It is challenging to separate relevant and irrelevant data while scraping a large amount of data from various websites. After downloading the scraped data, you must remove any incorrect, irrelevant, or duplicate data from your dataset. HTTP proxies help businesses collect relevant data and avoid data that does not make sense.

Which is better for you: HTTP or SOCKS proxies?

We cannot say that HTTP(s) proxy servers are superior to SOCKS proxies or that SOCKS proxies are superior to HTTP(s). Depending on your use case, both HTTP(s) and SOCKS proxy servers bring their benefits. The important thing is to understand your needs and the outcomes you want. 

For example, if you aim to transfer data using the HTTP, HTTPS, SMTP, or FTP protocols, HTTP proxies are not the best option. However, if you need to extract a large amount of data and avoid collecting irrelevant information to save time, you should consider using an HTTP proxy server, which filters content.
