A handful of smaller worms are loose in the wild, and though they’re not as wide-spread or

as destructive as some of their malicious counterparts, they’re causing a flurry of problems

around the globe.

Netsky-B and Bagle-B are just two of the viruses that have come out in the past few days,

and while neither is shutting down networks or crowding out bandwidth, both are picking up

speed. They’re also a nuisance at a time when IT and security managers are on guard for an

expected Blaster-type virus for a buffer overflow flaw in Microsoft’s Windows, as well as an

attack based on Windows 2000 source code that was leaked into the hacker underground.

”It’s sort of like a pack of dogs nipping at your heels when you’re waiting for the big pit

bull to come and bite you,” says Chris Belthoff, a senior analyst at Lynnfield, Mass.-based

Sophos, Inc., a anti-virus and anti-spam company.

Both Belthoff and Mark Sunner, chief technology officer with New York-based MessageLabs,

Inc., say there’s nothing particularly remarkable about the new slate of worms that have

recently hit the wild. Netsky-B is causing little activity. Bagle-B, even though it can be

easily filtered out at the gateway because it carries an executable attachment, is causing

more trouble.

MessageLabs analysts reporting intercepting 95,000 copies of Bagle-B by noon today. The

virus peaked yesterday but is still spreading steadily. At this point, 25 percent of the

infected emails have originated from the United States. Even though it is only a

medium-level threat right now, the worm installs a Trojan so it has the ability to

compromise infected machines to send spam, steal information, etc. It’s another example of

spam and virus threats converging.

”With these new worms, we’re not seeing anything approaching the MyDoom numbers, but it’s a

steady trickle of interceptions,” says MessageLabs’ Sunner, who adds that he believes that

spammers are behind many of the worms, such as MyDoom, that open backdoors and set up


followed by various random characters and the message text ‘Yours ID’. An attached .exe

file, has a randomly generated filename. If run, a remote access component allows hackers to

gain remote access to infected computers.

The worm harvests email addresses from infected PCs and, when forwarding itself on to other

computer users, spoofs the “From:” field using addresses found on the computer’s hard drive.

Like its predecessor, Bagle-A, this worm has a built in ‘dead date’ and has been designed to

fall dormant on 25 February 2004.

searches for directories on the infected machine that contain the word ‘share’ or ‘sharing’.

It then copies itself into these file sharing or instant messaging folders and replicates

itself through them.

But Central Command’s Steve Sundermeier warns that these worms may just be the prelude to

the big attack.

A chunk of Microsoft source code for Windows 2000 has been leaked to the underground

community, and despite Microsoft’s warnings, analysts say they’re quite certain that

blackhat hackers are studying the code for vulnerabilities that could be used to create a

massive virus.

”There is concern that the underground world try to find exploits in that source code,”

says Sundermeier. ”Once you have the source code, you can see exactly how to exploit that

piece of software. It was just a section of the code, but even just a section can lead to

potentially dangerous vulnerabilities and exploits.”

But there is even more danger that a Blaster-like virus will be built based on the critical

flaw in Microsoft’s implementation of the Abstract Syntax Notation 1 (ASN.1) data standard.

Analysts worry that a bug based on that flaw could cause major denial-of-service attacks

against unpatched systems.

Microsoft issued a patch with a ‘critical’ rating for the flaw last week.

”There’s a high probability for a virus to be written based on the flaw,” says Belthoff.

”We haven’t seen anything circulating on it yet, but it definitely has great potential.’

Acer Warns Against Surface, Microsoft Already Working On A Sequel

Acer is the most vocal opponent of Microsoft’s Surface tablet. Its founder Stan Shih went on the record two days following the Surface’s announcement, opining that the gizmo was just a ploy to drive Windows 8 adoption.

Today, Acer CEO JT Wang drove the point home by begging Microsoft to “think twice” about the Surface because tablet making is is not something the Redmond company is good at. Meanwhile, Microsoft is speculated to be already at work on a Surface tablet sequel…

As for Acer’s take on the Surface, CEO JT Wang was interviewed by Robert Budden and Sarah Mishkin for The Financial Times.

As the authors note, Wang is the first head of a big PC maker to criticize Microsoft’s move publicly, here’s what came out of him:

We have said [to Microsoft] think it over. Think twice. It will create a huge negative impact for the ecosystem and other brands may take a negative reaction. It is not something you are good at so please think twice.

I imagine Steve Ballmer must be throwing a chair in his Redmond office (Ballmer’s chair-throwing attitude about competition has been well-documented).

It’s understandable that Microsoft feels compelled to take matters into its own hands: July IDC data painted Apple as the leading PC vendor (if you count tablets as PCs), with the iPad growing its market share to 68 percent in Q2 2012 at the expense of not just netbooks (who remembers these?), but also notebook and desktop machines.

So Wang, what should Microsoft do then?

Leave tablet making to the big boys?

Exactly that, as Wang suspects that Microsoft entering the tablet game will antagonize its OEM partners, who don’t get the price benefit of creating both hardware and software under the same roof and are required to pay license fees to use Windows 8 on tablets, which means they’re unable to compete with their software provider on a level ground.

Oliver Ahrens, Acer’s senior vice president and president for Europe, Middle East and Africa, told Reuters that Microsoft is heading up for a failure:

I don’t think it will be successful because you cannot be a hardware player with two products. Microsoft is working with two dozen PC vendors worldwide, including the local guys, whereas Apple is alone, it can more or less do what it wants.

Interesting enough, it was reported today that Microsoft’s own Office 2013 RT for Windows RT tablets will ship as public preview, lacking macros and other features.

Another Acer exec, Campbell Kan, is concerned about unfair competition from Microsoft:

If Microsoft is going to do hardware business, what should we do? Should we still rely on Microsoft, or should we find other alternatives?

The only other viable choice is of course Google’s Android software which with the release of Jelly Bean that powers Google’s Nexus 7 tablet has proven a very capable alternative to both Windows 8 and Apple’s iOS.

Needles to say, Steve Ballmer is defensive of his company’s tablet gamble. The outspoken CEO recently reassured that “the importance of the thousands of partners that we have that design and produce Windows computers will not diminish” because of Surface.

Unfortunately, Microsoft’s 10-K filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission debunks Ballmer’s words as it clearly states that Microsoft could find it “more difficult to attract applications developers to our platforms” should the Surface prove popular.

And Wang doesn’t think that Microsoft’s PC-Plus strategy with Windows 8, which marries mouse and keyboard to touch input, is the way to go.

The keyboard is still a necessity but touch is becoming a fashion and necessary feature. Windows combines the touch and the keyboard. If you don’t have touch you are antique.

Apple’s boss Tim Cook noted as much, recently likening Microsoft’s approach to a convergence between a toaster and a refrigeratorthat wasn’t going to be pleasing to the user.

Microsoft recently acquired the maker of big screen multitouch surfaces Perceptive Pixel in order to bolster up its multitouch technology portfolio.

Microsoft will begin selling the Surface on Friday, October 26 at its twenty retail stores built across the country (and usually right across Apple’s high-profile brick-and-mortar outlets). The Windows maker is slated to open ten additional stores this year.


Microsoft has yet to announce price points for the Surface, though the company’s executives said during the unveiling that it’ll be priced comparably to notebooks, which many deciphered as at least $1,000 – the same price point analysts had floated in the months leading up to the iPad announcement.

I find when I ask in my training workshops, that often only a quarter to a third on the course have a blog. So there must be some serious reasons behind low business adoption of blogs. In the spirit of encouraging more companies to adopt them I’ve summarised here the reasons for and against. But first a poll – thank to those who helped devise the questions via our great Linked In Group discussion on reasons for not having a blog!

The results show 3 main factors are the most important barriers:

1. The senior managers don’t get it – the risks outweigh the benefits for them (23.2%)

2. We don’t have enough to say (19.0%)

3. We don’t see the return (15.8%)

Other was also a popular category where most talked about lack of time or the right specialists to write it – which clearly should have been a question!

Why blog may be the wrong name

As a starting point for the barriers, I think many companies are put off by the name – it can sound too geeky and maybe customers don’t know what a blog is.

But it can be positioned differently; as a magazine for example. A great example of a blog, powered by the free tool WordPress, which doesn’t appear as blog in the normal sense is the ASDA Online Magazine.

What do you think? I think a customer magazine works better for the company and the customers. I can imagine it would be a lot easier sell to the corporate communications team.

More reasons companies don’t have a blog

1. “What’s the point, where’s the return?”

The return on investment for a blog is certainly hard to prove in a monetary sense. But a big part of the business case is within SEO – where I think a blog is now essential to effective SEO, particularly now Google uses signals from social networks to rank pages.

This survey on blog SEO by The Top Rank Online Marketing Blog found that the vast majority of respondents found it was important to their SEO efforts. The chart shows how blogging helps.

In that case maybe position it as a customer magazine – as with the Asda example above. This will sit better with corporate communications teams in a larger organisation.

5. “We can’t afford it”

This is an easy one to argue against. Many of the CMS described above are open source or require a small outlay for a theme. Yes, you will need a designer to update the skin, but total cost could be 100s rather than 1000s. The real cost is the staff time to edit it or to outsource this. That resource does have to be

This may well be true and I think many who do have a blog have difficulty integrating them – witness the Asda customer magazine again.
