A Chinese report claims that Apple has had Foxconn and other suppliers make samples of folding iPhones, and that the devices could be launched as early as 2023.

The report is in today’s edition of Economic Daily.

Apple requires Taiwan’s supply chain to send samples for testing, including Hon Hai [Foxconn] and Nippon Nippon, which are both partners that Apple relies on for its first folding iPhone.

Apple is reportedly testing both the screen and the hinges – with the latter required to continue working for more than 100,000 operations.

Tougher requirements for a folding iPhone would make sense, as the device is likely to be unfolded and folded many more times per day than a MacBook.

The report suggests that Apple hasn’t yet decided whether the first folding iPhones will have OLED or microLED screens. Not to be confused with miniLED backlighting, microLED is a next-generation display technology, offering even greater levels of brightness, color saturation, and power efficiency. Apple is said to have gone as far as creating its own ‘secret manufacturing facility‘ for microLED screens, likely for three reasons.

Apple has long been reported to be working on a folding iPhone, with a number of patents for this type of device.

Early launches by competitors demonstrated the importance of ensuring that the technology is ready for real-life use. Samsung’s launch of the Galaxy Fold was a disaster; Microsoft’s Surface Duo failed during a launch demo, and the Motorola Razr died during robot testing of the fold. It would be no surprise, then, to find that Apple is being extremely thorough in testing possible designs.

We’ve seen a number of concept images for a folding iPhone, with two main schools of thought. The first is a conventional-sized iPhone which folds out into a more iPad-like size device. The other is a modern take on the flip phone, where a standard-sized iPhone (if such a phrase has meaning any more) folds down to a super-compact form factor. Both the above concept images are from EverythingApplePro.

One Apple patent described an approach involving two completely separate screens, while another describes a single folding display with self-healing properties to automatically repair the kind of damage seen in Samsung’s attempt.

Going by the spec sheet, this is shaping up to be one of the best camera drones (consumer level) to hit the market this year.

Autel Robotics Evo

Also announced at CES 2023, the Autel Robotics Evo is a folding quadcopter that appears set to take on the DJI Mavic Pro. The head-to-head match up by spec sheet puts the newer Evo in the lead, with the camera shooting 4K video up to 60fps and rear-facing obstacle avoidance sensors. Cryptically confirmed to begin taking orders on June 25th, the Evo is shaping up to be a solid drone for new buyers.

DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0

Just last month, DJI announced an update to the line of Phantom drones. This latest machine is an incremental update to the Phantom 4 Pro, called the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0. Primarily, you are looking at updated propellers and ESCs, to create quieter, smoother and more efficient flight. You’re also looking at OcuSync, the technology that allows wireless connectivity to the DJI Goggles.

Let us sum up quick: V2.0 is definitely better than the original, but maybe not so much better that you should park your V1.0 and go shopping. If you are buying your first Phantom drone now, go for the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 for sure. If you can wait, there’s always something better in the pipes, and the Phantom 5 could be here before the year is over.

This has been a big year for Intel’s drone business. The Falcon 8+ drone, along with their Insight software package, is changing the inspection market. More exciting are the World Record breaking drone swarm events. Emulating fireworks, creating amazing images in the sky, the Shooting Star team of drones put 1,218 drones into the air at the Olympics.

What other new drones are coming in 2023?

DJI Mavic Pro 2

With the release of the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0, we are not sure a Phantom 5 is coming soon. We still expect to see the new machine before the year is over, packing a more compact design, perhaps some folding propeller arms, and folding propellers themselves as well. The next stage in camera tech need not be a larger sensor, but an increased data rate could be good. Some camera vendors are shipping with 10-bit video and 4K 60fps or faster as well.

The biggest update we expect of the Phantom 5 is interchangeable lenses. The default, single-focus lens of most drone cameras today is fairly wide-angle, but works well. A selection of focal lengths would greatly expand the uses of the drone. But we’re still working with rumors and hopes.

New Mac Pro 2023: Release Date, Specs & Price

Finally, four years after the 2023 model was unveiled, Apple has introduced a Mac Pro with Apple silicon inside. The new Mac Pro features the M2 Ultra combining the performance of Apple’s most powerful chip with the versatility of PCIe expansion. Apple says the 2023 Mac Pro is up to 3x faster than the previous-generation Intel-based model, which can’t be hard, given that model is now four years old.

The new Mac Pro and the M2 Ultra Mac Studio have a lot in common. For example, they both share the same media engine, so both can play an unprecedented 22 streams of 8K ProRes video.

One difference between the Mac Pro and Mac Studio models is the better selection of ports on the M2 Ultra Mac Pro, including eight build in Thunderbolt ports (six on the back and two on the top). This is also an improvement on the 2023 Mac Pro which had half that number.

There are also three USB-A ports, two higher-bandwidth HDMI ports (that support 8K resolution and up to 240Hz frame rates), two 10Gb Ethernet ports, and a headphone jack (which supports high-impedance headphones).

The Mac Pro for 2023 supports up to six Pro Display XDRs, and offers support for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.

Toward the end of last month there was a very special 25th birthday: on the 23rd April 1982 the Sinclair ZX Spectrum was launched on an unsuspecting British public. Here in the UK Sir Clive, the founder of Sinclair, became something of a figure of fun after the failure of his C5 personal transportation machine (a swish name for an electrically-assisted recumbent tricycle), a 1985 effort to tackle urban transport, and few are aware that his research – and the marketed results of it – continues to this day. A chance link from a ZX feature led me to Mayhem UK, official distributors of the latest Sinclair product, the folding A-Bike.

Folding bikes are nothing new, in fact the concept has been available for many years – perhaps most notably by Brompton, who have been selling collapsing bicycles since 1976 – and each finds its own balance between wheel-size and folded-size. Larger wheels make for a more comfortable ride and, usually, greater pedalling efficiency, while smaller-wheels are less suited for travelling any significant distance but can invariably fold down to a far more compact package.

The A-Bike, as is obvious from the photos, falls definitely into the latter category; its 6-inch wheels perch almost comically at the end of each aluminium limb. What you lose in visual gravitas you gain in portability, however. It weighs just 12 pounds (5.5kg) and, when folded, measures 26 x 12 x 6 inches (67 x 30 x 16 cm); small enough to fit into a reasonable rucksack or, alternatively, the collapsing bag Sinclair Research supply.

It’s a straightforward concept. You’re not supposed to see the A-Bike as the sole replacement for your commute; it’s meant to bookend the journey, preferably done by public transport. Take the train into the city, then finish off the short trip to your office – and, because it’s always fun to ride around indoors, to the lift and then to your very desk – on the bike. Cheaper than a taxi and healthier too.

Unfolding the A-Bike takes – with a little practice – around ten seconds, struts stretching out and handlebars locking into place. It all feels surprisingly sturdy; I was expecting something flimsy and suitable only for kids, but once you’re used to the tiny wheels riding is oddly fun. The brakes are progressive and effective, while the numerous reflective panels give at least a vague sense of visibility to other vehicles. What you’re definitely visible to are pedestrians; the A-Bike is not a vehicle for the shy or retiring, and you should expect at least a couple of questions from curious bystanders on each trip (and, on the flip side, a few people pointing and laughing).

Personally, my commute takes me thirty-five minutes and I park right outside the office, so the A-Bike was never going to replace my car. Living close enough to local shops to make me feel guilty driving there, however, repurposed the bike as basic urban transport when we needed more milk or the paper. Storage was never an issue thanks to the A-Bike’s clever folding trick; standing up in the corner of the hall, the enclosed chain and crankhouse means no grease or oil rubbing off on walls or carpets (or trouser legs, for that matter).

Oddly enough, while I expected my cycling friends to most appreciate the A-Bike, they turned out to be the most critical group. A saddle which is, admittedly, not the most comfortable long-distance (or even really medium-distance) perch, the lack of gears and a perceived sense of frivolity seemed to offend their day-glo sensitivities. Far more enthusiastic were the non-cyclists: some saw it as an ideal addition for the car boot, another thought it useful for their motor-home, while young people flocked to it as a replacement to the push-scooter. Few were put off by the £149.99 price-tag ($298), although how many of them will actually go on to buy the bike as opposed to seeing it as a luxury or a frippery is unknown.

In the end, only you know whether the A-Bike suits your lifestyle or not. If you regularly commute into work or school and have a shortish walk at either end then perhaps the saved minutes biking would make it worthwhile to you. Similarly, if you live in town and have neither the space nor the inclination for a car or full-sized bike, then the A-Bike could be an easily stored and fun alternative. It’s one of those things that could easily be written off as a toy, but having tried it myself it’s anything but; yes, it’s entertaining and it gets attention, but I’d like to think that this latest invention of Sir Clive’s will last more like the Sinclair ZX than the ill-fated C5.
