Some users have been recently reporting in the Microsoft Community support forums that they have been noticing problems with their headphones in Windows 8. We go a little deeper

A while ago we were reporting that some Linux users have been detecting problems with their headphones in Windows 8. Now, some new forum postings suggest that the problem is also expanding to Windows 8 users, as well. If you happen to own Parrot Zik headphones, stay calm as they will work in Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 since Parrot has made available compatible drivers. Here’s what three users have been saying:

When playing any type of audio, sound will come out perfectly fine from the speakers, but when i plug in the headphones the sound will keep coming out from the speakers. How do i change the settings so that i can use my headphones?

i just got a toshiba laptop with windows 8 on it, it went fine until i want to use my headphones and somehow the sound is not the usual one. it still have sound, but its like it doesnt have the bass, or more clearly if you didnt put your headphones on something throughly. i tried, like when people said to check the disabled on playback and the headphones will appear, but in my case it wont. so how to make my headphone work like its usual sound?

I recently updated my Inspiron 15R to Windows 8.1 and since then, the headphone/audio out jack does not seem to function. When headphones are plugged in, it does stop using the speakers but no audio comes out of the headphones. They are a known working pair and the problem does not happen when I boot into Ubuntu, so it is definitely a software issue specific to Win8. I’ve installed the IDT drivers, re-installed them, deleted everything from the device manager and restarted so it would reset, and nothing seems to change.

Maybe a simple solution could fix the headphones problem

As we can see, the problem isn’t limited only to a single OEM, as more have been reporting problems with the headphones in Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. Some Vote, Some Don’t, and Why Students claim lack of information keeps them from polls

When Renee Rochon (COM’08) voted in the 2004 presidential election, she was among the 51 percent of 18-to-29-year-olds in Massachusetts who did so — the largest percentage in two decades. Two years later, she is about to join the millions of young people who aren’t voting in this year’s midterm elections.

“I haven’t been paying attention,” says Rochon. “I guess I don’t care that much.”

Despite efforts to get them involved, young people like Rochon are generally disengaged from politics, and from midterm elections in particular. One of the main reasons they stay away from the polls, students say, is lack of information — about the candidates, registration deadlines, absentee ballots, and even where to cast their vote.

“There seem to be a lot of barriers to voting. We need greater access to the information,” says Brooke Feldman (SED’08, CAS’08), the president of the Student Union. To tackle the problem, the Union’s Web site resource of the month provides information for voters, such as polling places and information about the candidates.

Another way of combating a lack of information about the electoral process is to get involved. Heather Ross, Boston coordinator of the nonpartisan voting rights organization MassVote, has seen increased interest from young people statewide in helping in this year’s election, a good sign, she says, because becoming involved makes them more likely to vote.

“For example, students who become poll workers get interested in the election process,” Ross says. “They have a chance to talk with the community — they see how it works. They get to see voting in action.”

Joe Mroszczyk (CAS’07), the president of BU College Republicans, says he will be recruiting volunteers to help at the polls. Mroszczyk interned at the State House office of Lt. Governor Kerry Healey sophomore year and before that at her campaign office during freshman year, but feels he is the exception rather than the rule.

“I don’t think that fellow students are very civically involved,” Mroszczyk says. “There is certainly a very active minority of students who are, but in large part I think many students are not too concerned with political activities and civic involvement.”

That minority may exercise considerable influence in getting out the Terrier vote, however, because they help connect students on campus with political parties.

“Campus political activism is important because it means that we can play a role in creating a better tomorrow,” says Cory Kalanick (CAS’ 08), president of BU College Democrats.

According to a 2006 survey by the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement, young people are more likely to vote when they are asked to do so. The survey found that 44 percent of people age 20 to 25 who were contacted by a party or candidate said they vote regularly, compared to 22 percent of young people who were not contacted.

Students know best how to make that contact. “Facebook has been a brilliant resource for us in terms of reaching out to students,” Kalanick says. “It is quick and easy to spread the word via interactive messages or events.”

Massachusetts Democratic gubernatorial candidate Deval Patrick has 35 friends on the BU Facebook network — although he may not answer if you “poke” him. The other three gubernatorial candidates have photos, friends, and announcements on the Campaign Network.

Students have a cynical attitude towards politics, according to Julian Zelizer, a College of Arts and Sciences professor of history. “It’s very hard to get students to get out and vote. They don’t see how their participation matters,” he says. College does provide an ideal time for students to become engaged in politics, because the curiosity and interest are there, he says.

Sanu Dev (CAS’08) registered to vote as soon as she turned 18, but she now prefers to work for causes such as building wheelchairs for disabled people, as she did on her last spring break. “You see the results quicker,” she says.

Despite students having so many other things going on in their lives, they make participating a priority, in the opinion of Colleen Quinn, coordinator of political groups at the Student Activities Office. “They are definitively not apathetic,” she says. “I think it’s like everything else — it’s about doing what you really become passionate about.”

Fix Headphones Not Working Or Detected In Windows 11/10

If your Headphones are not working – maybe after installing an Update, it could be due to incompatible OS and drivers. Updates to several computer components are meant to fix stuff that is broken but sometimes results in breaking some other components. One such scenario is where a Windows Update breaks the headphone. The computer stops playing any audio using the headphones. This error is caused due to incompatible drivers.

Headphones not working in Windows 11/10

Here are some working solutions that will help you if your Headphones are not working or being detected:

Manually set Headphones as the default device.

Make sure you use the right ports

Disable front panel jack detection

HD Audio Over AC97

Restart the Audio Service

Update or roll back your Audio drivers.

Use the Audio Troubleshooter.

Rollback or install a newer Windows Update.

Some of these may need admin permission to fix it. Assuming that the mute button is not active,

1] Manually Set Headphones as the Default Device

Sometimes, when a headphone is plugged in, it does not toggle the default audio device or default playback device. In this case, you can just set the default audio device to the headphones.

Under the section of Output, select Headphones for Choose your default output device.

This should get the headphones working on your Windows 10 device.

2] Make Sure You Use the Right Ports

If it is a wired headphone, make sure you have connected the wire to the correct port. There are usually two ports—Audio out and Mic input. Often, you connect to the wrong port as it’s easy to get used to, and we connect without looking at the port. So if that’s the case, then connect to the right port.

3] Disable Front Panel Jack Detection

It is possible that the audio is being streamed towards the Front Panel of the cabinet. Even when you have changed the default audio, you can change the front panel jack detection feature if there is no change.

You can also choose to make the front and rear audio streams different audio outputs. So if you want to hear different audio from different ports, you can do it.

4] Use HD Audio Over AC97

It’s hardware wiring where you need to make sure the connection from the motherboard is correct. Some OEMs offer both HD Audio and AC97. If you have connected AC97, and it’s not working, check your motherboard manual, and change it to HD Audio.

Another issue could be that the front panel audio connector has 2 connectors—one for AC97 and the second for HD audio. You can use only one of them. So if you have connected to both somehow, choose HD audio.

5] Restart Audio Service

If you cannot listen to system audio as well, it’s probably the Audio service that has the problem. You need to open the Windows Services and restart or enable the Audio Service.

6] Update or Rollback Your Audio & Bluetooth Drivers

If the update is recent, you can roll back that driver to an older version that does not trigger this issue. In case there was no update, it is possible that the outdated drivers need to be updated to the latest version. Install a new version of that driver if available. Make sure it is the correct device driver

The drivers you need to focus on are:

Bluetooth.

Sound, video, and game controllers.

7] Use the Audio Troubleshooter

Follow the on-screen instructions, and this will fix your issue.

8] Rollback or install a newer Windows Update

If this issue has occurred after installing a Windows Update recently, you can uninstall recent Windows Updates and reboot your computer to fix this issue.

Alternatively, you can also check for updates to get a patch for this, which Microsoft may have released.

Update – there are currently no Windows 10 Nokia Tablets, but he hope this will change in the future.

The Surface RT from Microsoft is out in the wild and begs for a question – will the Surface Pro manage to gather more sales? As much as some of us don’t love Microsoft, it’s time to admit that they are very, very late with their tablet and that the single enemy the iPad currently faces is not the Windows 8 tablet spree but the Android army.

A very big problem that users of Windows 8 currently face is the confusion created between the full, Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro operating system and the Windows RT, the dumbed-down version of Windows 8. So, people who pay around $500-$600 for a tablet expect it to come with a full Windows 8 experience, so when that doesn’t happen, naturally, consumers get frustrated. And that’s Microsoft’s biggest issue right – the dissatisfaction of its users. And if Microsoft doesn’t fix this, Nokia will.

Wait, who, NOKIA? Yes, the Finnish company that has been for so many years synonym with cellphones. But right now, there is a lot of companies out there that have embraced Android, Google’s secret gun and have developed awesome smartphones and tablets. Thus, Nokia, has seriously lost from its previous fame. So, what are Nokia’s options right now? To adapt to the new situation or to die.

Nokia’s Windows 8 tablet – soon on the market?

Obviously, the direct rival for an eventual Nokia tablet with Windows 8 or RT inside would be Microsoft’s own Surface tablet. And if Nokia manages to choose the right pricing strategy, then I think they can sell even more than Microsoft did. Personally, I think that right now Nokia has much more lovers, in terms of hardware, than Microsoft does. Many people would be really curious to see how a Windows 8 tablet from Nokia could look and feel. Nokia needs to be able to catch that curiosity and convert it into money by bringing on the market an astonishing slate.

The Surface tablet didn’t have anything amazing in it, overall, it’s a good product, but it lacks the WOW feeling that you get with the iPad. Nokia can do that with their own tablet. Where did all this buzz came from? Directly from Nokia’s CEO lips:

“We haven’t announced tablets at this point, but it is something we are clearly looking at very closely. We are studying very closely the market right now as Microsoft has introduced the Surface tablet, so we are trying to learn from that and understand what the right way to participate would be and at what point in time.”

What’s very interesting is that Nokia didn’t ditch the possibility of choosing the Android side, as weird as that might not sound for the moment

“We would consider any option [Android or Windows] … It is important to note that the opportunity for companionship is something that any user is looking for. So, when you think about the Lumia 920, running on Windows phone, having a Windows tablet or PC or Xbox is something that will give us the opportunity to have a pretty integrated experience. Our first focus on what we look at is clearly in the Microsoft side”

Albeit Windows is prioritary, we can’t ignore Nokia’s interest for Android. I could even dare to think that they can work on their own operating system. However, they could opt to focus for the development of hardware and just pick the software solution either from Microsoft or Google. Either way, I’m sure Nokia will do a great job and most likely, the tablet could be released under the same recent branding of its smartphones – the Lumia name.

The tablet is expected to hit the market by the end of this year but they need to pick up the timing very well, because looking at past year, Apple has been very agressive with its iPad portfolio. Looking at the current Lumia smartphones, one could say they are bulky. But if Nokia keeps the same design line with their tablet, I think many will be impressed.

Reading news on your Windows 10, Windows 8 or Windows RT device is something that many will look to do right after buying one such device. There are plenty news applications in the Windows Store that can help you with your need for news, but today, we’re focusing on NewsBento, a news aggregator that’s one of the most popular such applications in the Windows Store.

Probably, one of the most important reasons for NewsBento‘s success was the fact that the application has been in the Windows Store amongst the first. At the moment it has been rated by more than 450 people and has a 4.2 out of 5 score, which is not bad at all. And just like the developers say, this is, indeed, a very fluid and “light” application to use.

Unfortunately, NewsBento has been discontinued. It was pullet out from the store in 2023. When you first open up the app, you’ll see that there are already some websites added, so in order to customize your own news experience, you’ll have to change that and put your own websites that you are following. But you’ll discover that it will be one fun thing to do, because the application is masterfully made. There’s even a Feedback button there, from where you can go to their Facebook page, vote the app or send them a message (last one didn’t work for me, though).

Hit the “more news” button to be able to customize and put your own websites. You can add more feeds from the websites that are already featured there or you can add feeds to websites that aren’t there. A very, very nice thing is that you can already add your Google Reader account (let’s see what happens when I add my Google Reader with more than 300 websites…).

Surprisingly enought, the import of my G Reader has happened blazing fast. When you are done with that, you’ll see websites appearing on the main page, the “content” page. From there, you can delete, make a tile larger or smaller and pin it to start. If you delete the tile to a certain website, then others will automatically extend to “eat up” the remaining space. At this step, I encountered some issue. First of all, some thumbnails weren’t appearing at all or seemed fuzzy. Secondly, the thumbnails didn’t appear at all.

Another big issue was the fact that I didn’t manage to add any website at all using the “Add RSS feed” function if I didn’t put at the end the .xml extension. So, most likely, it won’t work for websites where you’ll try to put /feed at the end of the website’s name. But there’s another awesome function to help you cope with that – search function. Use that to search your favorite website and simply add it for there. Neato!

You can select every website from the main screen, then go to the latest articles, from there you can pick the desired article. When you are inside the article, you can do the following there:

Enable CleanView – increases the readability of the article

View original article – opens up a sidebar with the original article

Open in browser – exits the app and opens the article in the browser

Also, after opening up the website that you want, there’s a nice scroll button that “takes you back in time”, quite quickly, and much easier than you would normally do it on the regular website. A very useful news app in Windows 10, Windows 8 that needs to iron out only a few drawbacks.
