Suggested January 2024 How To Boost Or Increase Microphone Volume Beyond Its Settings

Whether you are recording, gaming, or in a meeting, your voice may sound quieter than it should. Still, you can resolve this issue of low amplification of your voice through the microphone by creating changes in its settings.

Sometimes, however, your device or your ports may have some problems. We recommend connecting those devices to different ports or computers to find the cause. You can replace the faulty hardware if you find any. Also, clean the ports and the microphones to get clear signals. Some external microphones also have volume control on the device. So, please check for it.

This article will show you how to boost microphone volume for different systems if the problem still persists.

Boosting Microphone Volume in Windows

Windows makes it easy to control the settings for all hardware and software devices. To increase or boost the volume of your microphone, you may use the control panel or the system settings.

Through Microphone Properties in Control Panel

The control panel allows users to control the configuration of all devices. Naturally, you can access microphone properties through this tool. To do so, follow these directions:

Open the Levels tab in the new window. Here, you can adjust or boost the volume of your microphone.

If the volume doesn’t change while using some apps, the apps may be overriding this setting. Navigate to the Advanced tab in Microphone Properties. Here, disable the Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device option.

You can also change the microphone settings from the apps themselves. You may prefer this option if you want different configurations for different programs.

Through Input System Settings

Another way to control microphone volume in Windows is through the settings. It provides the same result as the method above. So, you can choose one according to your preference.

There is a slider to adjust the volume in the new tab.

Follow the same steps from the previous method to boost the microphone.

You can also test your microphone volume in its Device Properties settings.

Through Virtual Audio Device

Windows may not be able to manipulate external microphones lacking their drivers. You can install a virtual audio device on your computer to solve this issue. It comes with an independent driver. After passing the mic through the virtual device, boosting the input signal will become possible.

Using audio equalizer software is also necessary to adjust the sensitivity or gain of your microphones. There are many virtual device applications and equalizers available in the market. You can search for and install reliable ones on your PC.

Boosting Microphone Volume in Mac

Mac has options to alter gain or sensitivity in its System Preferences. You can boost your microphone volume through the input sound preferences. To do so, follow the steps below:

Here, select your microphone device and use the slider to adjust its volume.

Boosting Microphone Volume in GNU/Linux based OS

You can use the command-line interface to adjust the settings in GNU/Linux-based systems. To boost or increase the microphone volume in such systems, follow these instructions:

Press Ctrl + T to open the terminal.

You can use the following commands to increase or decrease the mic volume:

amixer set Capture 5%+

amixer set Capture 5%-

Change the number to what you wish.

However, it is better to use the alsamixer settings. Enter sudo alsamixer to open it with root privilege.

You can press F6 to select the correct sound card.

Press F5 to view all options and navigate by using directional keys.

Locate the Mic Boost option and highlight it. Press the M key to change mute status (MM to 00).

Then locate the Mic option near Line and CD. You can set it to the gain you want by using up-down directional arrow keys. This option should stay at MM.

It would also be better to change the amplification in the Capture option near Mix and Mix Mono.

Play around with these gains to find your optimal configuration. Finally, press ESC to exit.

These settings reset every time you reboot your computer. To store the settings, enter- sudo alsactl store on the terminal.

Make sure to enter both the alsamixer and alsactl store commands as root using the sudo keyword.

Check the FAQ section to find what you can do if these settings do not reload after a reboot.

Why is the Microphone Boost option not available? (Windows)

If the option is not available in your system, you may want to try running the Recording Audio troubleshooter. Also, make sure to install the latest updates for your drivers.

What is the difference between microphone volume and microphone boost?

Microphone volume means the loudness for your microphone signals. This doesn’t affect the tone of the sound at all. Boost means the amplification of the sound and affects its tonal quality. Boosting volume increases all sounds, even noise, so it is a good idea to only boost your mic when necessary.

How To Increase The Maximum Volume In Windows

Sometimes turning the volume up to 100 is all you need. Other times, however, you need that little extra boost. When the Windows volume is all the way up but things are still too quiet, these options could make things a bit louder. The following methods will show how to maximize the device volume in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

1. Increase Volume Using Equalizer APO

Equalizer APO is a free open-source software that gives you extremely fine control over your PC equalizer settings. We could do a whole feature on all the crazy stuff you can do with this software, but for now we’re just focusing on cranking up that maximum volume.

In the “Configurator” window of the installer, select the devices you’d like to use with APO (Headphones, for example).

When the APO installation finishes, you will be asked to reboot Windows.

Following the device restart, go to the “Equalizer APO” install directory, followed by the “config” folder, then open the “config” file in Notepad.

Change the preamp number to a maximum of +20 dB (ideally, +10 dB is more than enough) and delete the rest of the text in the file so that it looks like the following image.

Save the file, reboot your PC, and you’re good to go!

2. Check the Software Volume

Some video player software may come with a volume-boosting option. For example, if you find VLC to be a little on the quiet side, you can increase its volume up to 300 percent within the player itself. Note that the higher you go, the more audio clipping and distortion you may experience. It’s a quick method but not necessarily the cleanest.

3. Adjust the Volume Dipping Option If Voice Calls Cause Trouble

If everything sounds perfectly fine during regular use but takes a sudden dip when you enter a voice call, you have a communications option set to lower volume during calls in Windows 11/10..

4. Check Individual Software Levels

If every app’s sound bar is at a good volume, the levels for that specific app may be low. To double-check this, balance individual software volume levels as shown. The methods to raise the volume for Windows 11 are slightly different from Windows 10.

Windows 11 has its own dedicated option for “Volume mixer,” which can be opened from the Start menu search.

For the input and output devices on Windows 11, check individual volume levels. If the bar is lower than the others, lift it to the same level.

You’ll see all the software you have open with the individual volume scales. Ensure the quiet app hasn’t had its volume dropped for some reason.

In Windows 11 the “App volume and device preferences” window opens. Here you can adjust the volume of individual input and output devices to ensure they are at similar levels.

5. Use Audio Enhancements

If everything is just too quiet in general, you can use audio enhancements in Windows 10 and Windows 11 to give your sound levels that extra boost.

Once the speaker or headphones properties are displayed in Windows 11, go to the “Advanced” tab and check the box for “Enable audio enhancements” if not already checked.

In Windows 10 there is a separate “Enhancements” tab under “Speaker Properties.” Check and apply the “Loudness Equalization” box.

Working with audio enhancements will boost the sound even further, which should hopefully make it loud enough for you to hear! If, however, you’re not getting any sound on your Windows device, you need to disable audio enhancements.

External Sound Boosters in Windows 10/11

It can be annoying when the sound is too quiet but your volume is maxed out. The cause can be many things, from automatic voice call features to individual app volume sliders being low. Sometimes, however, things are just too quiet in general, at which point you can use sound boosters within either Windows 11/10 or the software itself to get those extra few decibels. We have covered two such examples below.

6. Use FxSound Enhancer

Do you want professional quality sound effects on your Windows device, such as bass and surround sound? FxSound is one of the best sound boosters for that razor sharp audio clarity.

Play a sample audio. Make minor band adjustments in the sound enhancing tool to suit your desired levels.

In the Pro version of FxSound Enhancer, you can set various “presets,” including one that gives a “Volume boost.” The sound effects with this app are louder than anything possible with your PC or laptop.

7. Use Your Smartphone Audio with WO Mic

Recent smartphones provide high fidelity audio along with bass and special effects. With the right booster app, you can make use of those speakers on a Windows 11/10 system to maximize its volume.

Download the WO Mic Installer for Windows application and install it on your device.

During installation, you need to set the proper WO Mic Driver as a default based on your PC configuration (x64, ARM64, etc.).

Download the WO Mic app for Android or iPhone.

You need to set up a transport mechanism in the app to communicate with the laptop device. It can be Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, or USB.

Go back to the WO Mic desktop client and set it up with the same transport mechanism as your phone.

For example, if the phone was configured using Wi-Fi, use Wi-Fi to connect it with the desktop client. Also, ensure that the IP address is the same on both your phone and laptop/PC.

Frequently Asked Questions 1. Does Windows 11/10 come with an equalizer?

At the moment, Windows 11/10 does not have its own built-in equalizer. This is why you should use an external equalizer software such as Equalizer APO or FxSound Enhancer.

2. How do I increase System Volume in Windows 11/10?

To increase the system (or device) volume in Windows 11, you need to use the “Enhancements” option from “Control Panel Sounds.” Windows 10 has additional options for “Loudness Equalization.”

3. Can I control the volume on Windows using my keyboard?

The computer keyboard is an easily accessible device to manipulate the volume of Windows 11/10 systems. Use the Fn + F8 keys to increase the volume and Fn + F7 to lower it. To mute/unmute the keyboard, use Fn + F6. As you press the keys, you will see the volume change on your screen.

How To Build Trust And Boost Employee Engagement

Effective Ways of Building Trust and Improve Engagement

The current

Communicate Initiatively

Employees want to know the motive behind the engagement activities. Sometimes even if one thinks the individual has communicated enough, the person probably hasn’t. They should understand what, when, why, and how. Effective communication, from creating the engagement design to making it happen, reduces confusion, and helps them see its benefits. In return, it boosts engagement by creating a sense of confidence and camaraderie throughout the organisation.

Put Everyone in the Right Position

It’s required to ensure one gets the right people on the bus and give them the right roles. That means all talent acquisition and retention methods must be aligned with meeting the organisation’s goals. Apart from considering technical skills, consider behavioural and soft skills as well when considering a candidate for a position. One must hire people with qualities the individual can build on, such as integrity, enthusiasm, a willingness to learn, a sense of humour, and a sincere interest in the business. Technical business can always be taught but changing one’s approach is more challenging.

Provide Proper Training

Every leader should know that she will build a culture of trust and accountability and even enhance engagement by setting the team up for success. This indicates providing suitable training and development for the employees while removing hurdles. The leader can further a team’s engagement and trust levels by recognising each individual’s strengths and weaknesses and offering them training tailored to improve the strong points and tackle the weaker ones. It will show that the leader is thinking about employees on an individual basis, not just as part of the machine.

Provide a Candid Timeline

Employees deserve to know what’s next to their engagement at the workplace. The leader should ensure providing them a timeline of the possible results to make this easier. While

Show Generosity without Commercial Goals

Employees want to be considered beyond commercial purposes. They should take an interest in their employees’ well-being and make efforts to improve their personal lives. If the leader looks at them for just business motives, it will be tough to keep them engaged in the long run. It is necessary to build trust by gradually being kind and accommodating and proving that monetary goals don’t just drive the leader.

The current business environment and the world are generally moving more rapidly than ever before. Worldwide organisations and companies are confronted with more change than most of them can manage. They are determined to grow fast with fewer resources. Managers are obliged to learn to excel by acting appropriately within their teams and simultaneously confronting organizational goals. Most leaders know that the employees are a company’s most important asset. That is accurate when the majority of the workforce is entirely working against the organisation. Today more than ever, companies count on the energy, commitment, and engagement of their employees to survive and flourish in the 21st century. Trust is difficult to be achieved, and it must be continuously re-earned by the employer. Employee engagement is not an exact science. The entire concept has been created on HR experience, positive psychology, and business models. These engage a company ‘s talent towards a productive culture of success. Here are ways how employers can build trust and improve engagement:Employees want to know the motive behind the engagement activities. Let’s face it – being in IT is hard work. Being in IT with remote employees is incredibly hard. You’re supporting countless pieces of software along with SaaS backends, potentially hundreds of combinations of internet providers, RF environments, Wi-Fi routers, and other demands on the home environment. All of this when people are reliant on their devices to do 100% of their job. If you’re in IT supporting remote organizations, here are some actionable steps to help improve your work from home Wi-Fi environments for your team.

Addressing speed problems

If your users report issues when working at home – the first thing to understand is the speed they’re paying for vs. the speed they’re getting. You can use a tool like the Speedtest app to do some basic measurements against what the employee is paying for with their internet coverage.

If you confirm a significant discrepancy between what they are paying for vs. speed getting, then start to ask more questions.

How far are you from your router?

How many walls are you going through? What are the walls made of?

How many other devices are on your network?

Is anyone else working at home or doing virtual school?

A simple test to determine if you have a Wi-Fi problem or an ISP problem is to have your user hardwire into their router and run a speed test. If you see dramatically different results – you have a local Wi-Fi problem. Unfortunately, these problems are hard to diagnose remotely. One workaround would be to have the employee have their ISP run a dedicated ethernet cable from their router to their primary workspace. Particularly for video calls/webinars – wired ethernet will be more reliable. You’ll need to add on a USB-C to ethernet adaptor. As the last step, an app like Pingr can be valuable to monitor your connection.

Upgrading Wi-Fi

If you plan to work from home permanently, it might make sense to have a mesh network where each node is hardwired. You’ll need to hire an electrician to run at CAT5/CAT6 cable from your main router to the nodes, but it’ll create a stronger network as a result. Some ISPs will also run cable for you as well.

Create a 5 Ghz only network

If you run into a situation where you can’t run ethernet to a laptop and have upgraded the Wi-Fi, but are still running into problems – creating a 5 GHz only SSID might ease some access problems. If the user lives in a crowded neighborhood RF-wise, getting them on a network that only uses 5 GHz might be a workable option for limiting interference.

If you run into a situation where you need to dig deeper into the RF environment of a user’s home, have them install WiFi Explorer so you can get an idea of what is around them.

System cleanup

If you have a poor-performing device that is being blamed on the Wi-Fi, it’s rather possible the machine itself needs some attention instead. While Macs are very secure, there are still various pieces of malware that can get installed. I recommend CleanMyMac X as a cleanup tool that can be run to diagnose Malware issues and clean up hard space in case the hard drive is full (another source of slowdowns).

Beyond Byod: How Byod Acceptance Changes Organizations

After reading the headline to this story, you’re probably thinking to yourself “acceptance”? Isn’t BYOD about deployments and management? Isn’t it about policies and risk mitigation?

Sure, but it’s also about accepting the fact that we’re already beyond the BYOD point of no return.

The five stages of BYOD adoption eerily mirror Kubler-Ross’s five stages of grief:

Denial. “Are any employees really going to access our ERP suite on a mobile device? Those tiny screens make it just too much bother.”

Bargaining. “Okay, you can use your iPhone, but not Android. And you have to sign a waiver giving us the right to wipe your phone remotely whenever we want.”

Depression. “What on earth are we going to do about this BYOD problem? How are we going to pay for this? How are we going to manage and secure this? It’s a Sisyphean task. Just shoot me now.”

Acceptance. “This BYOD stuff isn’t really as bad as it seems. There are tons of tools out there for both security and management. You know what, once employees are reliably and securely mobile, remote work becomes more constructive, downtime between meetings can be productive, and, hey, I have this idea for a cool app that would tie our CRM to our social-networking efforts…”

I recently attended the MobileCON conference in San Diego. BYOD tools, suites and schemes were everywhere. Vendors were liberally rolling the term BYOD into their collateral and affixing it to their booths. The focus of all of this was security, management and productivity, yet BYOD has the potential to be much, much more.

Is it unreasonable to interpret BYOD as a sign of things to come, to regard BYOD as being as much about the changing workplace and the evolving nature of knowledge work as it is about basic mobility? Is it unreasonable to think of BYOD as a potentially disruptive trend that, alongside social media, will fundamentally change how businesses interact with their customers?

Coca-Cola Enterprises is somewhat cautious about BYOD. They accept iPhones and BlackBerries, but not Androids until the platform matures more and bulks up some of its basic security. They’re also using the MDM (Mobile Device Management) solution from AirWatch to help secure and manage mobile devices.

Still, even with mobility a reality and not a future goal, it’s not a straight line from mobility to productivity and new ways of interacting with customers. Data that could benefit mobile employees may still be locked in various silos, ERP, CRM, marketing analytics suites, etc., and if it is difficult to share data from one application to another in-house, it can be nearly impossible to do so from a mobile device.

And it can be tougher still to figure out how shared data will actually improve the customer experience.

“Mobile platforms allow people to connect with one another, not only with colleagues and friends, but with brands,” said Esat Sezer, SVP and CIO of Coca-Cola Enterprises, one of Coca-Cola’s largest bottlers. “[Coke is] one of the most followed brands on Facebook. We have 50 million followers, which increases every month. What does that mean? To consumers, it means that they want to not only connect with a brand socially, but they also want to collaborate with it. Smart brands will build on this new social relationship to better serve those consumers.”

For Coca-Cola Enterprises, a B2B company, they aren’t focused so much on consumers, but on retail partners in the supply chain. In their case the “customer” could be a convenience store or fast food restaurant. As the company became more mobile, Coca-Cola Enterprises wanted to transform its supply chain into a “real-time, event-driven” one. In a supply chain with 30,000 delivery drivers and 11,000 merchandisers, anything aspiring to real-time must by definition be mobile.

To tackle this challenge, Coca-Cola Enterprises deployed Software AG’s webMethods, an application integration and business process management (BPM) platform. With webMethods, merchandizers can clock in and out on their mobile devices, deliveries can be tracked via GPS, and a delivery person stocking shelves can report back on any point-of-sale buying patterns he or she may notice.

If the bottles in an end-of-aisle display that has some sort of social media component, through say a QR Code, are always sold out, and the cold bottles in the cooler are not, that’s an important insight that is easy for a delivery person to detect – if they are paying attention, and if it is easy to report this fact back to headquarters.

Then all of that information can be fed into applications like SAP and pulled back out to share with other relevant applications as needed.

How Nvme Goes Beyond The Sata Specifications

Standards body adoption for NVMe, SAS and SATA specifications covers products used on PCs, laptops, PC servers and mobile devices connected to new SSDs. Standards are set through the T10, T13 and NVMe Technical Committees, and add additional SSD capabilities for wear leveling, garbage collection and more through SSD controller enhancements. Furthermore, they set additional protocols and commands available to communicate with newer SSDs.

These standards not only ensure that PC-connected SSDs achieve their optimum performance and reliability, but also that any SSD can connect to any controller on any motherboard.

Getting Down to Basics

At a fundamental level, a hard drive uses a magnet to change an individual bit from off to on, or vice versa. Each block is a separate spot on a rotating platter, one of up to seven. The speed of the bits passing under the read/write head varies according to how close or far from the edge of the disk the bit is placed. The process of reading and writing must take into account the varying number of bits per second caused by the smaller number of bits in the tracks near the center and the larger number near the edge of the disk, and be able to find the appropriate track with the written data.

In contrast, an SSD changes a cell within a block of cells. That cell may have one, two, three or four bits. The speed of reading any given bit on an SSD will be the same as any other — there’s no physical location that takes more time than others. Changing any one bit requires erasing a whole block, which can range in size from 512 bytes to 8192 bytes (8 KB).

This means that changing one bit within a block requires writing a much larger amount of data, which is why SSDs typically have faster read speeds than write speeds. Newer SSDs can wait until they have multiple writes to a single block, so that one block rewrite can encompass multiple bit changes.

SSD cells also have limited numbers of writes that can occur before the cell ceases to function — wear leveling ensures that the cells wear out evenly, but means that the particular cell that holds a specific part of a file will change regularly, unlike a hard drive where a bit that is part of a file is only moved when a file is erased. With this potential to wear down and lose data, users need to make sure that their operating standards and hardware are up-to-date to avoid any broken connections. The NVMe specification allows the SSD controller to make wear leveling more intelligent so that as cells, blocks and files are changed, the pieces of a file are consolidated, reducing the number of writes and the wear on the cells.

NVMe adds a number of capabilities to the older SATA specification. It supports multiple physical connections, including the M.2 PCIe connection, as well as the U.2 connection for 2.5- and 3.5-in. SSDs. NVMe also supports multiple simultaneous streams, faster speeds and allows data to be written to specific pages on the disk to be written in the same stream, reducing write amplification.

Ever-Changing Data and Garbage Collection

The process of moving data to new cells and erasing the old cells is called garbage collection and causes data to continue to be changed after the system has finished writing.

With older SATA SSDs, if a lot of data is being written, garbage collection may lag considerably behind. The new NVMe SSD standard allows for data to be divided into streams, so that data going to the same blocks can be written at the same time, minimizing the need for garbage collection. The TRIM command helps the system and the SSD to better handle garbage collection and the protocol used to connect SSD to computer must take this into account.

NVMe adds a number of commands for communicating with NVMe SSDs, as well as faster interfaces and optimized routines for writing data to the SSD without incurring penalties due to write amplification, by collecting multiple changes to the same page on the SSD and writing them all at once.
