Suggested January 2024 How To Check Your Apple Warranty Status
This article explains how you can check your Apple product warranty status and eligibility to purchase an AppleCare product.
Apple designs, manufactures and sells various products, including the iPhone, the iPad, the Mac, the iPod, the Apple Watch, the Apple TV, the AirPods, the HomePod, and the other Apple-branded accessories (keyboards, etc).
Apple product warrantiesApple offers warranties on new or refurbished Apple hardware. When you buy an Apple product, it usually comes with the Apple Limited Warranty. This warranty, basically, says that Apple warrants your products against defects and workmanship under normal use for one year.
Apple offers additional warranties. You extend (and upgrade) your protection if you purchase AppleCare+ or the AppleCare Protection Plan. The pricing for this additional coverage differs. For example, Apple’s extended warranty service costs $199 for the iPhone X, XS, and XS Max, offering two-year coverage including accidental damage. You can buy this when you buy your device or within the 60 days of your purchase.

It’s Time To Check Your Voter Registration—Here’s How
National Association of Secretaries of State
Every state makes its own voting rules, so it makes sense that the secretaries of state, whose offices handle elections, would have banded together to help people vote. This non-partisan organization gets you checking your registration in just two steps.
First, head to NASS’s voter registration status page (you can get it in Spanish too). Then, pick your state from the dropdown menu. It’ll bring you right to the page on your state’s website where you can see if you’re registered. This is useful because hunting for this information on the state’s website yourself may not be as easy or intuitive as you’d hoped.
Once you’re on your state’s domain, simply follow the directions and fill in the proper fields to find out if you’re on the voter rolls. The only exception here is North Dakota, which doesn’t register voters. All you need is identification showing your date of birth and that you live in the state.
The one downside to this process is that the dropdown menu doesn’t list any US territories, which won’t participate in the 2023 presidential election. But they do have elections of their own, so we’ve got you covered.
US Election Assistance CommissionIt’s in its name: the EAC offers a wealth of election-related information. This independent bipartisan commission was created by the Help America Vote Act of 2002, and while there’s no page dedicated to checking your registration, it’s not hard to find.
Once you’re on the Register And Vote in Your State page, simply choose your state from the dropdown menu. Next, you’ll get useful links, contacts, and deadlines, including how to check your registration.
The US territories American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are here, but there’s no option to check your voter registration for Guam or Puerto Rico. So, here, a gift:
Why it’s important to check your registration statusNumerous factors can affect your voter registration: moving (even a few blocks), a name change, and the government purging you from their voter list, to name a few. That’s why as the election creeps ever closer, it’s important to really make sure you’re on the rolls. Save your state’s checkup page and review it repeatedly, if you want.
What to look for when you check your registrationEven if you are registered, the information may not be correct. The federal government recommends confirming your name is spelled accurately, that your address and party affiliation are up-to-date, and that you know where your polling place is.
If anything’s wrong, contact your election office immediately—you might need to update your information or re-register. When you do so, you should also plan to update your driver’s license or whatever identification your state requires you to show at the polls. If you’re not sure what, if any, ID you’ll need, the National Conference of State Legislatures has a map for that.
What to do if you’re not registered OnlineIf this is available in your state, it might be the easiest way to register. Unfortunately, it’s not offered nationwide. Forty-one states and Washington, D.C., have it, though. You can find links to the state forms on the NCSL website and D.C.’s voter registration page right here.
MailAll states except Wyoming and North Dakota (which, again, doesn’t register voters) accept registration by mail. New Hampshire only accepts requests for absentee ballots by mail. To send your registration by post, download, fill out, sign, and mail in the National Mail Voter Registration Form. It’s available in 15 languages and all you need is a US address.
PhoneSome states will register you over the phone, but you’ll have to check with your local election office. You can find it by selecting your state from the dropdown menu on this chúng tôi page.
In PersonYou can register in the flesh at your state or local election office. We didn’t travel to every single one of these (sorry), so we can’t provide any more detail than that. You may also be able to register at the local department of motor vehicles, a military recruitment center, or a public assistance office, but you’ll need to check with those locations first.

How To Identify Your Apple Tv Model
Apple, sadly, did not do a great job of making the various Apple TVs visually distinct from one another – at least, not in an immediately obvious way. As a result, it can be hard to tell the difference between all of Apple’s similar-looking Apple TV offerings, especially in secondhand marketplaces like eBay. Use this guide to identify your Apple TV model and learn the key differences between different models of Apple TV, both in hardware and software.
Rapid IdentificationLook for these ports when scanning the back of the device for rapid identification and answer the following questions:
Is it silvery-white with component video inputs? If so, it’s an Apple TV 1st Generation.
Does it have a USB-C port? If so, it’s an Apple TV HD (previously Apple TV 4th generation).
Does it not have a USB port of any kind? If so, it’s an Apple TV 4K.
Checking the Model NumberIf you have an Apple TV 2nd or 3rd generation, they’re visually indistinguishable. But they do have different model numbers.
To check your model number, look at the bottom of the device. At the bottom of the label you’ll see regulatory text and logos. In the first line scan for the “Made in China” text. Immediately after that line you’ll see the model number prefixed with an A.
A1218 is 1st generation.
A1378 is 2nd generation.
A1427 is 3rd generation.
A1469 is 3rd generation.
A1625 is 4th generation HD.
A1842 is 4K
Two 3rd Generation Model Numbers? The two 3rd-generation models come from the early 2012 and early 2013 models. The newer early 2013 model of the Apple TV 3rd generation has an A5 processor build on a smaller 28nm process size compared to the early 2012’s original 32nm process size. The early 2013 Apple TV 3rd generation also adds support for peer-to-peer AirPlay.
Feature DifferencesPorts that are familiar to most users or visually notable are in bold. These ports can be used to identify the Apple TVs quickly. All take the same power supply and use visually-indistinguishable Ethernet connectors.
Apple TV 4K
HDMI 2.0a (2160p, Dolby Vision, and HDR10)
Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n/ac)
Bluetooth 5.0
No USB Port
Apple TV HD (Previously, Apple TV Fourth-Generation)
HDMI 1.4 (720p or 1080p)
Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n/ac)
Bluetooth 4.0
USB‑C above HDMI port
Apple TV (3rd generation)
HDMI (720p or 1080p)
Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n)
Optical audio
Micro-USB below HDMI port
Apple TV (2nd generation)
HDMI (720p)
Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n)
Optical audio
Micro-USB below HDMI port
Apple TV (1st generation)
HDMI and component video (480p or 720p)
Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n)
Optical and RCA stereo audio
USB 2.0 (for service and support)
Rectangular shape
Silver and clear plastic chassis
ConclusionIf you have access to the Apple TV or can see pictures of the Apple TV’s ports, you’ll be able to reliably distinguish its feature set. But the most informative side is actually the bottom of the device where the model number is printed. That can be directly translated into the exact model, with no need to try and visually separate ports. To see a complete accounting of all the differences between each Apple TV generation, check out EveryMac’s database of Apple hardware.

How To Airdrop Files Between Your Apple Devices
AirDrop is a wireless file transfer feature that allows you to rapidly share files between Apple devices, such as a Mac and iPhone, iPhone and iPad, etc. You can send files between your devices or with other Apple users’ devices. Once you know how to set up and use AirDrop to transfer files, you’ll never go back to other slower solutions!
How Does AirDrop Work?Apple AirDrop uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to create a peer-to-peer connection between devices, allowing you to share files quickly and easily without needing a network connection.
Once the devices are within range, select the file you want to share and choose the AirDrop option from the share menu for a specific file.
The Share Menu Button in iOS and iPadOS
This will automatically search for nearby devices compatible with AirDrop and display them in a list.
Select the recipient from the list, and the file will be sent wirelessly to their device. The recipient will receive a notification that they have received a file and can choose to accept or decline the transfer. The file will be saved to their device if they accept the transfer.
Good to know: if you’re an Android user and looking for something like AirDrop, learn how to share files and apps on Android with Nearby Share.
The Advantages of Using AirDrop
With AirDrop, it’s easy to share files between compatible Apple devices without an Internet connection or additional software.
AirDrop uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to create a peer-to-peer connection between devices, allowing (much) faster file transfer speeds than other methods.
Encryption is used to protect the privacy of your files during the transfer process.
AirDrop supports a wide range of file types.
AirDrop is available on all Apple devices that support Bluetooth LE (Low Energy) technology, which is virtually all of them released in recent years.
Once you’ve used AirDrop, it’s almost certain to become your go-to file-sharing choice between your Apple gadgets, but before you can start flinging those files through the air, you’ll need to ensure that AirDrop is enabled.
Good to know: Bluetooth technology is an amazing, power-efficient way to send and receive data. If you’re not totally familier with it, it’s worth learning about all the ways Bluetooth can be used.
Enabling AirDrop in macOSAirDrop should be enabled by default on your Mac, but you may need to check its settings and make sure it’s ready to use.
To enable AirDrop on a Mac, follow these steps:
From the Go menu, select “AirDrop.” This will open a new window showing nearby devices that are compatible with AirDrop.
Once AirDrop is enabled, you will see a list of nearby devices that are compatible with AirDrop. You can drag and drop files onto a device in the list to share them wirelessly.
If you just want to make sure you can receive files via AirDrop, enable it from the Control Center on your Mac by following these steps:
From the AirDrop menu, make sure “AirDrop” is toggled on. then select either “Contacts Only” or “Everyone” to enable AirDrop.
Good to know: if you can’t seem to get AirDrop working on your Mac or another supported device, you can check our AirDrop troubleshooting guide for solutions.
Enabling AirDrop in iOS and iPadOSNow that you know how to enable AirDrop on macOS, let’s learn how to enable AirDrop on an iOS or iPadOS device:
Open Control Center on your device by swiping down from the top-right corner of the screen (on an iPhone without a home button) or swiping up from the bottom of the screen (on an iPhone with a home button or an iPad).
From the Control Center, tap on the AirDrop icon. (It looks like a group of circles with a triangle shape missing at the bottom.)
From the AirDrop menu, select either “Contacts Only” or “Everyone” to enable AirDrop. In some regions, you’ll see “Everyone for 10 Minutes” instead.
To enable AirDrop from the Settings app on an iOS or iPadOS device, follow these steps:
Open the Settings app on your device.
From the main Settings menu, select “General.”
Select “AirDrop.”
From the AirDrop menu, select either “Contacts Only” or “Everyone” to enable AirDrop. In some regions, you’ll see “Everyone for 10 Minutes” instead.
Once AirDrop is enabled, use it to share files with nearby devices, as described above. To disable AirDrop, go back to the AirDrop menu in the Settings app and select the “Receiving Off” AirDrop option.
How to AirDrop Files Between MacsNow that AirDrop is ready to go on all your devices, let’s look at how to send files. First, we are AirDropping a file between two Macs:
Make sure that both Macs are within range of each other and have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled.
From the Go menu, select “AirDrop.” This will open a new window showing nearby devices that are compatible with AirDrop.
In the AirDrop window, you will see a list of nearby devices that are compatible with AirDrop. Drag and drop the files that you want to share onto the device you want to send them to.
The recipient will receive a notification that they have received a file and can choose to accept or decline the transfer. The file will be saved to their device if they accept the transfer.
Remember, AirDrop is only available on Macs running macOS Lion or later. If you’re not running the latest update, learn how you can improve your Mac experience with macOS Ventura.
How to AirDrop Files Between iOS and iPadOS DevicesIt’s also possible to AirDrop files between Apple’s mobile devices. See the complete steps below:
Make sure that both devices are within range of each other and have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled.
On the device that will be sending the files, locate the files that you want to share ,and tap on the share button. (It looks like a square with an arrow pointing up.)
From the Share menu, tap on the “AirDrop” option. This will search for nearby devices that are compatible with AirDrop and display them in a list.
In the list of nearby devices, tap on the device that you want to receive the files.
The recipient will receive a notification that they have received a file and can choose to accept or decline the transfer. The file will be saved to their device if they accept the transfer.
Good to know: you can connect external storage to an iPad if you want to transfer data that is too large for an AirDrop.
How to AirDrop Files Between macOS and iOS/iPadOSSending files from a Mac to an iOS device or vice versa works the same as described above. Follow the same initial steps for macOS or iOS, respectively, and pick the target device in the list.
Receiving AirDrop FilesAssuming that you’ve enabled AirDrop on your macOS, iOS, or iPadOS device and that it’s set to receive files from your contacts or everyone, receiving files is easy.
If you’re receiving files from someone else, you’ll have to choose whether you want to keep the files or reject them. If you don’t want anyone to send you files (some people do this maliciously), change your AirDrop settings to “No one” or “Contacts only” as shown earlier.
Frequently Asked Questions Can I use AirDrop to share files with devices that are not made by Apple? No, AirDrop is only available for use between Apple devices. It uses proprietary technology that is not compatible with devices made by other manufacturers. If you want to share files with a device not made by Apple, you will need to use a different file-sharing method, such as email, a cloud storage service, or a third-party file-sharing app.
Can I share files of any type using AirDrop?Yes, as long as the recipient’s device is compatible with the file type. AirDrop supports the sharing of many different file types, including photos, videos, and documents. However, some file types may not be supported by certain devices, in which case the recipient may not be able to open the file. The recipient may have to download the right type of app on their device to open a file.

Let’s face it – being in IT is hard work. Being in IT with remote employees is incredibly hard. You’re supporting countless pieces of software along with SaaS backends, potentially hundreds of combinations of internet providers, RF environments, Wi-Fi routers, and other demands on the home environment. All of this when people are reliant on their devices to do 100% of their job. If you’re in IT supporting remote organizations, here are some actionable steps to help improve your work from home Wi-Fi environments for your team.
Addressing speed problemsIf your users report issues when working at home – the first thing to understand is the speed they’re paying for vs. the speed they’re getting. You can use a tool like the Speedtest app to do some basic measurements against what the employee is paying for with their internet coverage.
If you confirm a significant discrepancy between what they are paying for vs. speed getting, then start to ask more questions.
How far are you from your router?
How many walls are you going through? What are the walls made of?
How many other devices are on your network?
Is anyone else working at home or doing virtual school?
A simple test to determine if you have a Wi-Fi problem or an ISP problem is to have your user hardwire into their router and run a speed test. If you see dramatically different results – you have a local Wi-Fi problem. Unfortunately, these problems are hard to diagnose remotely. One workaround would be to have the employee have their ISP run a dedicated ethernet cable from their router to their primary workspace. Particularly for video calls/webinars – wired ethernet will be more reliable. You’ll need to add on a USB-C to ethernet adaptor. As the last step, an app like Pingr can be valuable to monitor your connection.
Upgrading Wi-FiIf you plan to work from home permanently, it might make sense to have a mesh network where each node is hardwired. You’ll need to hire an electrician to run at CAT5/CAT6 cable from your main router to the nodes, but it’ll create a stronger network as a result. Some ISPs will also run cable for you as well.
Create a 5 Ghz only networkIf you run into a situation where you can’t run ethernet to a laptop and have upgraded the Wi-Fi, but are still running into problems – creating a 5 GHz only SSID might ease some access problems. If the user lives in a crowded neighborhood RF-wise, getting them on a network that only uses 5 GHz might be a workable option for limiting interference.
If you run into a situation where you need to dig deeper into the RF environment of a user’s home, have them install WiFi Explorer so you can get an idea of what is around them.
System cleanupIf you have a poor-performing device that is being blamed on the Wi-Fi, it’s rather possible the machine itself needs some attention instead. While Macs are very secure, there are still various pieces of malware that can get installed. I recommend CleanMyMac X as a cleanup tool that can be run to diagnose Malware issues and clean up hard space in case the hard drive is full (another source of slowdowns).
