The FPS (frames per second) rate can have a big impact on games’ gameplay when it drops. FPS rates aren’t always consistent as some Windows users have found that their frame rates are somewhat lower when they start games up.

The frame rates might drop to 10-20 FPS on some games’ startup menus. These are a few resolutions that might fix low FPS frame rates on game startups.

How do I fix low FPS in games on startup?

You can open Device Manager by pressing the Win key + X hotkey.

Select Device Manager on the menu to open its window below.

The driver date on that tab tells you when it was last updated.

Press the Update Driver button on that tab if the driver hasn’t had any recent update.

Then you can select a Search automatically for updated driver software option to find a more updated driver.

Uninstall Device is an alternative option you can select on the Driver tab.

Press that button to uninstall a driver that might be corrupted.

Windows will automatically reinstall the driver when you restart the OS.

Launch games with Game Booster software

Dodgy or outdated graphics card drivers can certainly have an impact on frame rates. Windows Update usually automatically updates graphics card drivers so you shouldn’t need to.

However, anybody who has switched the update service off should check for graphics card updates.

Alternatively, you can fix a corrupted graphics card driver by reinstalling it. Device Manager is the window to open for updating or reinstalling drivers.

Use the Alt + Tab Hotkey

Expert tip:

That opens the Alt + Tab switcher with which you can reopen the game. When you return to the game, its FPS frame rate will usually jump up.

Developers release updates to fix issues in their latest games. Some updates might fix known FPS issues. For example, SEGA released an update to fix a frame rate bug in Vanquish.

Check the games’ official websites for new updates from which you can then download and install patches.

Background software and processes always reduce system resources for games. Whether your games have low FPS rates or not, you should always free up RAM before launching them to ensure they run smoothly and reduce potential system conflicts.

There are a few game booster, or launcher, software that automatically optimize Windows when you launch a game.

Razer Cortex: Boost is a renowned freeware game launcher for Windows 10/8/7, and some Razer users have stated that it dramatically boosts FPS rates.

One of the best things about the software is its Game-Boosting mode that automatically closes superfluous background processes when you open a game from Cortex’s library, the Start menu, Steam, Origin or a desktop shortcut.

Furthermore, the software also includes a FPS counter and stats tools.

Those fixes might boost your games’ startup FPS rates and ensure they stay consistent with the average frame rate. For some more general tips to increase frame rates, check out this Windows Report article.

Dishonored 2 issues: game freezes, low FPS rate, control lag, and more

Dishonored 2 is now available in Early Access for those who pre-ordered it. Steam’s stats confirm that 8,000 gamers are playing Dishonored 2. The game’s official release is scheduled to take place tomorrow, November 11.

Dishonored 2 will also have a day-one patch of 9GB and for a good reason: Early Access players already report the game is affected by various issues that severely limit the gaming experience. It’s likely the patch won’t fix all Dishonored 2 bugs, and we’ve prepared a list of the most common issues reported by gamers so that you know what to expect.  Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll be experiencing all these issues.

Dishonored 2 reported issues Game download stops at 65%

This is definitely a very annoying issue for all the gamers who are dying to play Dishonored 2. The download process suddenly stops and when players want to resume it, an error message appears on the screen.

Anyone know what to do? it’s installing on my external HD that has about 400gb left of free space.

Low FPS rate

Many gamers complain that Dishonored 2’s low FPS rate causes stuttering even on low settings. For the time being, there is no clear workaround available to fix this bug.

Game runs horrible, even on low settings i got like 30 fps, if anyone has a solution which might help, pls let me know.

White dots around edges in certain places

Some gamers also report that there are white dots around edges, especially on ceilings. These white speckles can become very distracting at times. The good news is that you can quickly fix this bug by using the TXAAx1 method on far right in the menu. The downside of this solution is that it makes everything look a bit blurry.

White dots around certain edges in the game. it appears to be mostly the ceilings and no where else which means it is not artifacting. anyone know of a fix for this.

The game crashes at loading screen

Expert tip:

So I verified the cache and tried everything but it keeps crashing at the loading screen with Emily and Corvo. Anyone else running into this issue? […] I’m also running DirectX 11. Could you guys please help out? I really want to play it and would even be willing to deal with crappy framerate but not getting past the first screen is annoying as hell.

Dishonored 2 freezes

Players report that the game runs fine for the first 10-15 minutes but then suddenly freezes. The game becomes unresponsive and a window pops up with an annoying “Check for solutions” message.

Game will with out fail run fine for 5-10 minutes and then Freeze. The last triggered audio will play itself out, be it Emily’s voice or a cut scene character, and then the game becomes unresponsive and windows pops up the “check for solutions” box. […]  I’ve tried lowering various settings but the crashing persists. I have the latest Nvidia driver and Windows update. Any idea what to try next?

 Control bugs

Dishonored 2 players are also complaining about control lag. Often, it takes a few seconds for your action to translate into the game. There is no solution for this bug yet.

Dishonored 2 is stuck in Windowed Mode

Other issues include:

Obscured edges of the screen. This gets even worse when gamers crouch, as the effect is a strange blurry overlay on the corners of the screen.

There’s no button option for (hold) lean left and right: “I really just want to be able to tap lean to peak like in the last game, and it should be sped up a bit as well right now it feels a bit too slow and the disoriented slanted state it leaves you in is ridiculous and disorienting when you’re trying to move away from that state.”

Mouse aim is locked to certain speeds : “It doesn’t act like traditional mouse acceleration, what it feels like is more like it’s locked to certain speeds where I’ll move quickly to a point and stop and it’ll take a second for the screen to catch up”

There’s no description on any of the graphical or HUD options.

How To Fix Game Stuttering On Windows 11

As a gamer myself, I can completely understand the frustration you feel when the game you play suddenly starts to stutter randomly or drop in FPS. While game stuttering can be caused by many reasons, I’ve sorted a list of most possible causes for game stuttering on Windows 11 and their respective solutions in this post.

Also see: Game Stuttering and Lag on Dual Monitor

Screen recording is a very resource consuming process. This is a fact that is still not known by many people. When a recording program is actively recording your gameplay, it may cause some quite significant FPS drop and game stuttering issues, especially if your graphics card and CPU are not sufficiently powerful.

Therefore, check if you have any third party recording programs such as NVIDIA Shadowplay, Outplayed, OBS, etc. running in the background while you play your game. Close it and see if the game stuttering issue can be resolved.

In addition, there is a built-in game recorder in Windows 11 called Game DVR that is enabled by default. Game DVR is a feature that assist users with automatic video recording of gameplay in the background. If Game DVR is actively running in the background to record your gameplay, since it’s also a quite resource-demanding process, it may cause FPS drop and/or random game stuttering.

Hence, try to disable Game DVR and see if it helps with the game stuttering issue. To disable Game DVR in Windows 11, follow the steps below.

Go to Start menu, type “regedit” and open Registry Editor.

In the Registry Editor window, copy and paste the following path to the address bar, and press Enter to open the path. ComputerHKEY_CURRENT_USERSystemGameConfigStore

Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Suggested Guide: How to Show FPS in Games on Windows 11

One of the most common causes of game lag, FPS drop or game stuttering is running other resource intensive apps or programs such as Chrome while you game. For example, if you watch YouTube, Twitch or other streaming or video website on a second monitor while you game on your primary monitor, you will likely encounter FPS drop and random game stuttering.

If that’s the case, try to close Chrome and other resource intensive apps before running your game and see if it helps resolving the game stuttering issue in Windows 11.

Suggested Read: Game Lag When Watching YouTube or Twitch on Chrome

Game stuttering and FPS drop are often caused by the fact that you are running multiple apps and programs along with your game. If you need these apps and programs to stay running while you game, you can set your game as high priority via the Task Manager to allow Windows 11 to prioritize resources (e.g. CPU and GPU resources) for your game.

This workaround is very effective especially you need to keep some Chrome tabs open while you play your game. Simply set your game as high priority and the random game stuttering can be significantly reduced.

Alternatively, you can also set other resource intensive tasks to low priority if they are not important. However, be aware not to set critical processes as low priority as it may cause other issue such as system instability.

G-Sync is a technology by NVIDIA to reduce screen tearing and game stuttering while keeping input-lag to the minimum. If you are using an NVIDIA graphics card, try to enable or disable the G-Sync option to see if it helps improving the game stuttering and FPS drop issue.

For more info: How to Turn On G-Sync or FreeSync in Windows 11

To turn on or off G-Sync, open NVIDIA Control Panel via the notification area (taskbar corner) or by searching it from the Start menu. In NVIDIA Control Panel, expand Display on the left pane, and then select Set up G-SYNC.

From there, you can enable or disable G-Sync technology for your monitor by checking or unchecking the checkbox for “Enable G-SYNC, G-SYNC Compatible“. You can also choose to enable G-Sync for full screen mode only, or both full screen and windowed mode.

Most games, especially modern and latest games, would perform much better in terms of Frames Per Second (FPS) and unlikely to have game stuttering issue in full-screen mode than in windowed mode on Windows 11.

Try to change the in-game display or video settings to fullscreen mode instead of windowed mode and see if it helps improve the in-game FPS and reduces game stuttering events.

Read: How to Go Full Screen on Windows 11 Games or Apps

There are several settings you can tweak in the NVIDIA or AMD 3D settings to help improve the in-game FPS and reduces the chance of game stuttering. The instructions below outlines how to configure the 3D settings for NVIDIA GPU users. You can find similar settings in the AMD Radeon Settings if you are using an AMD GPU.

To configure NVIDIA 3D settings, open NVIDIA Control Panel and select Manage 3D settings from the left pane. On the right, select Global Settings if you want to change the settings for all apps and games, or select Program Settings instead if you want to change the settings for only one game.

Power management mode – This option allows you to set a preference for your GPU’s performance level when running 3D apps such as games. Setting this to “Prefer maximum performance” will maintain the graphics card at its maximum performance state when games are running regardless of GPU usage, which can increase power consumption. The default setting is “Optimal power”.

Texture filtering Quality – This option allows you to decide if you would prefer performance, quality, or a balance between the two. Selecting high quality will provide highest visual quality while reducing performance (lower FPS). On the contrary, selecting “High performance” will improve FPS by sacrificing some visual quality.

Recommended Tip: How to Force Game to Use Nvidia GPU or Integrated Graphics

Check the power options in Windows 11 to see what power plan is currently active. If the selected power plan is set as “Power Saver“, Windows will save energy by reducing your computer’s performance wherever possible.

This may cause FPS drop or stuttering when you play a game with this power plan. This is especially the case if you are using a laptop computer where power plan plays an important role when you are on battery.

Try to set the power plan to “Balanced” (should be sufficient) or “High Performance” for maximum performance. You can access the power options by searching “Edit power plan” via the Start menu in Windows 11.

There are often bugs and software conflicts that may cause new games to have random problems, which requires a hotfix from the driver side. If you haven’t already done so, try to update your graphics driver to the latest version and see if the game stuttering issue can be fixed.

Read: How to Update Graphics Driver in Windows 11

Audio also plays an important role in terms of in-game FPS and stability in certain games. In some games that have an incredibly high amount of audios and sound effects, the audio quality may directly affect the in-game FPS of the game and can even cause game stuttering.

Reducing the in-game sound quality (or disabling the audio) can drastically improve the performance of the some games. Try to lower the in-game audio quality settings and see if it helps to improve the in-game FPS and reduce the game stuttering events.

The causes of game stuttering and FPS drop issues can be very vast and sometimes unknown. If the game stuttering issue only happens in one particular game, you may need to search for solutions specific to the game. The game may have hotfixes or patches that are specific to the bugs or performance loss issue.

Generally, if you encounter FPS drop when you play a new game, it may just indicate that your graphics card is not powerful enough to run it smoothly. Try to reduce the in-game graphics settings or upgrade your graphics card.

RAM (Random-access memory) also plays an important part in multi-tasking. If you need to run multiple programs while playing games, add more RAM to your computer so that each app and game can have sufficient memory to run with.

At the same time, Nvidia GeForce Driver 397.31 also brings issues of its own. There is already a list of known issues that you can check out on Nvidia’s website. Apart from these bugs, gamers also encountered other problems after updating their graphics cards.

Nvidia GeForce Driver 397.31 reported issues

1. Install fails

Many gamers reported that the update process often fails with various errors or simply freezes. If you’re experiencing the same problem, you can try to do a custom installation. Users confirmed that this quick workaround helped them install the update after the first attempt failed.

Also, install error 43 seems to affect many GeForce GTX 1060 cards from three particular hardware manufacturer. Nvidia is already aware of this problem and is working on a fix:

Based on the emails I have received so far from end users, I believe the Code 43 error upon installing driver 397.31 on a GeForce GTX 1060 cards mostly/only affects cards from PNY, Palit and Gainward.

If you encountered this bug on cards from a different card maker, contact Nvidia support.

I had the exect same thing, my second monitor had no input and my resolution was really low. I think its just a bad update for some… i reinstalled the previous version of my drivers and now everything is working again!

If your computer fails to recognize the second monitor, check out this troubleshooting guide to fix the problem.

3. FPS drops

Gamers also experienced FPS drops on certain Nvidia GPU models such as the 1050TI. Reverting to a previous driver fixed the problem.

I had issues with 1050 ti (Gigabyte 1050TI WF OC4) Laggy UI in sove work software, drop in FPS in a game. Reverting to older fixed the issues.

4. Exclusive full screen won’t work

Some gamers can’t play their favorites games on full screen mode after installing driver 397.31. This is quite an annoying bug as it limits the overall gaming experience. Fortunately, this problem affects only a few games such as Destiny 2.

Destiny 2 has a problem with driver 397.31. Exclusive fullscreen doesn’t work, the game always reverts immediately to windowed mode whenever I use the game’s settings menu to change to fullscreen, or if I press Alt + Enter. This was not an issue with previous drivers, as I played the game today using 391.35 before updating the driver, and it ran fine in exclusive fullscreen.

How To Fix Obs Game Capture Black Screen

If you’re recording your gameplay using OBS Studio but are getting a black screen, it can be due to incorrect OBS settings. Another reason for such a case can be that the software can not detect the correct application.

For OBS studio to recognize the game, we must configure several parameters correctly, like the graphics source, selecting the correct application, etc. Therefore, without any delay, let us get to some major causes and fixes to try to fix a game capture black screen issue.

Why Does OBS Studio Game Capture Have a Black Screen?

Game capture not added in sources

OBS using another GPU source

Compatibility issue

OBS outdated

An overlay application

Here is a list of a few things that can cause a black screen in OBS.

How to Fix Game Capture Black Screen in OBS?

Now, according to the things that cause a black screen, let’s try to fix our problem with the solutions listed below.

Remove and Add Game Capture

The first thing you want to do is remove the game capture and add it again in Sources. The Sources section is on the bottom bar of the OBS Studio dialog box. Removing the previous Game Capture will delete any previous settings of the Game capture, and the new one will have all the default settings.

If this does not work, try to remove it and add again. Please follow these steps to remove the Game Capture.

If we do not add Game Capture again, the OBS will record the entire screen that you selected. Follow these steps to add Game Capture to Sources.

Now, you can follow these steps to add Game Capture to Sources.

Note: The game must be running in the background.

Write any name for your Game Capture, or you can duplicate an exciting one by checking the Add Existing checkbox.

Select the Mode as Capture specific window and Window as the game you want to record.

You now will see that the Game Capture has appeared on Sources. Make sure that the eye icon is not crossed. If this is crossed, the OBS will display a blank screen.

Graphics Preference Settings

The OBS also records a black screen from Game Capture if the computer runs on two GPUs, dedicated and integrated. When a computer uses integrated graphics and dedicated graphics, the OBS studio’s graphic preference must also match the GPU used when running the game.

Most games will run from a dedicated graphics (High-performance GPU) card rather than an integrated one. So, if the OBS studio uses integrated graphics (Power saving GPU) to record, you will get a black screen.

Therefore, it’s important to set the graphic preference for the dedicated graphics card to record our gameplay. Follow these steps to select OBS’s graphics preferences.

Now, select the option High performance.

Now, restart your computer and open OBS Studio to see if we have fixed the issue.

Run with Admin Privilege

You will get a black screen on Game Capture if OBS studio gets blocked by an application with higher priorities/privileges, like antivirus software. When we run an application as an administrator, the OS will provide them with maximum resources like GPU memory allocation, physical memory, etc.

Follow these steps to run an application as an administrator.

If this solution works, follow these steps to run OBS as administrator every time.

Check the Run this program as an administrator.

Note: While you are on Properties, you can also check the Run this program in compatibility mode for and select Windows 7.

Disable Game Mode

The game mode feature in Windows boosts the FPS (Frames Per Seconds) you get in games and offers a consistent gaming experience. But, it may interfere with OBS studio, causing the black screen in Game Capture.

Check for Updates

OBS developers frequently update their applications to fix bugs and errors in OBS Studios. If your problem occurs because of some bugs in OBS, then updating the OBS will solve your issue.

You can follow these steps to update OBS studio.

Open OBS Studio

If there are no updates, you can use the previous version of OBS Studios to fix the problem. But first, you will need to uninstall OBS and its cache files. We do this so that the same problem does not occur in the older version of the OBS.

Press the Windows + R key and type %temp% without the punctuation mark to clear any cache files. Select all files and delete them.

Now, Install a previous version of OBS Studio to fix the black screen problem.

Close Any Overlay Process

An overlay process is an application that displays some information on the top level of the screen, like an FPS counter or a game bar. These overlays may interfere with the Game Capture, which will give you a black screen while recording. Close any of these applications.

If, for some reason, you are still getting a black screen, make sure that other applications are not running in the background. Follow these steps to close any background process.

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager.

Under Background processes, search for any application that has an overlay ability.

OBS Studio Alternatives

If none of the above solutions work, it is best to search for another application to record and stream your gameplay. You can try other applications like BandiCam, Lightstream, Shadowplay, ShareX.

How To Access The Windows 10 Startup Folder

How to Access the Windows 10 Startup Folder Learn how to find and modify the Startup Folder

The Task Manager’s Startup tab provides you with insights on what exactly are the apps that launch at startup.

The Startup folder’s location on Windows 10 PCs is not always easy to find for users, so we made a guide to help you out.

After you access the Startup Folder, you can add and remove software or programs to & from it.

The software and programs you add to this folder are set to run automatically when Windows starts.

Windows 10’s Task Manager utility includes a Startup tab. That is Windows 10’s default startup manager with which users can disable startup software.

However, the Task Manager’s tab doesn’t include any options for users to add programs to the startup. So, some users might look for startup settings on software windows to add new programs to the system startup.

Yet, Windows 10 includes a Startup folder to which users can add programs and files. All software and programs within that folder will run automatically when Windows starts.

What is the Startup folder?

The Startup folder is an in-built Windows feature (first introduced in Windows 95) that allows users to set up those particular apps and programs that will automatically run when Windows starts.

The folder is buried within a series of subfolders and can be hard to find.

How can I manage the Windows 10 Startup folder?

Some users might wonder where is the Startup folder on their PC, how to open it and how to add or remove the software from it. In the text below you will find answers to all of these.

1. Open the Startup folder using File Explorer

For most users, the Startup folder is located at this address:

There is also a second All Users Startup folder that should be located under:

C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup

As you can see, the full path for the Startup folder is this:

C:UsersUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStartMenuProgramsStartup

Users will need to replace USERNAME with their actual user account name, and then enter that path in File Explorer. That path will open the folder shown in the snapshot directly below.

2. Access the Startup Folder using Run

1. Press the Windows key + R hotkey to open the Run dialog.

2. To open the Admin User Startup folder, enter shell:startup in the text box.

3. To open the All Users Startup folder, enter shell:common startup in the text box.

Expert tip:

5. The Startup folder is now opened on your computer.

A quick and easy way to open the Startup folder on your PC is to use the built-in Run dialog. It works as a shortcut and all you need to do is input the appropriate command, then the folder will open.

3. Add Software to the Startup Folder

With the Startup folder open in File Explorer, users can now add new program shortcuts to the system startup. In addition, users can also include file shortcuts within that folder.

Then the files the Startup folder includes will usually open with their default software. This is how users can add shortcuts to the Windows Startup folder.

Select a program or document to include in the startup, and press the OK button.

Press the Next button.

Then press the Finish button. The Startup folder will now include the selected software or file.

The software in the Startup folder will open after you’ve restarted Windows.

4. Remove Software From the Startup Folder

Users can also press the Ctrl + A keyboard shortcut to select all shortcuts within the Startup folder. Then press File Explorer’s Delete button to erase them.

Task Manager’s Start-up tab in Windows 10 will also list the programs that users have added to the Startup folder.

Windows 7 users can uncheck the item checkboxes on that tab to disable programs starting during startup. So, that’s how users can add new software and files to Windows’ Startup folder.

However, filling that folder up will slow down the system’s startup. Lots of startup software will also drain system resources. Therefore, don’t add too many things to the folder.
