Suggested January 2024 How To Open Any Folder From The Mac Terminal
The standard way to open any directory within macOS is to open a Finder window and use it to navigate to a specific location on your hard drive. There’s also another way to open folders: use the Terminal. It may not be something you use every day unless you’re a developer, but the power is there if you need to call on it.
As such, this post will show you how to open any folder from the macOS Terminal. We also show you how to create a custom shortcut to carry out this command.
Why You’d Want to Open a Folder From the Mac TerminalAs we noted, the preferred way of opening a folder is by using Finder. This is a Graphical User Interface (GUI), and it’s macOS’s directory navigation de jure. But it’s not the only way to access files or folders within macOS.
We admit, using the Terminal to open folders isn’t a natural way to get around macOS. Though, you’ll find it will come in handy in the following situations:
If you’re a command line user, it may be something you have in your toolbox.
Developing for Mac often means working within the Terminal. If this is the case, it may be the path of least resistance to stay inside the Terminal as much as possible.
If you’re in a rare situation where macOS is acting as server software, you may only be able to use the Terminal to navigate the Operating System (OS).
Given the above, it’s easy to see why you may want to have the knowledge. Next, we show you how to get the job done.
How to Open Any Folder from the Mac Terminalor by typing “Terminal” in Spotlight. Once it’s open, you won’t need any dependencies to open any folder from the Mac Terminal. You’ll only need the open command. The general syntax is as follows:
open/
path/
to/
Directory/
For example, to open the Pictures folder, you’d use the following:
There are a bunch of other short commands you can use to access specific folders. For example:
To open the Root directory, use open /.
For your Home folder (i.e. the folder containing Desktop, Documents, and other folders specific to the user), type open ~.
To open the current working folder within Finder, use open ..
To touch on this last point further, you may be navigating your files using the Terminal and have a need to open the folder you’re in.
While the commands so far open specific folders, you can also launch (and update) applications from the Terminal without using Finder. For example, to open Safari, type open /Applications/Safari.app.
Of course, you’re able to replace Safari with any app on your system as long as you know its file name.
Open a Folder in Terminal from a Shortcut MenuNext, navigate to the Shortcuts tab. Here, select the Services menu and scroll down to find “New Terminal at Folder.”
If you select any folder within Finder, open the Services menu from the Toolbar and choose “New Terminal at Folder.”
This is going to be ideal if you often switch between a GUI and the Terminal.
In SummaryThe Mac Terminal isn’t something you’ll encounter often. In contrast, a developer or sysadmin might spend most of their time using a Terminal app. Given this, opening a folder is a basic task that can keep you on the command line as long as possible. All you need is the open command and the path to your folder.

How To Reset Smc On Any Mac
The SMC, or System Management Controller, is a chip on your Macbook that controls how your Mac manages its power. It also manages some other lower-level systems on your Mac. Generally speaking, you typically don’t need to reset SMC unless you’re troubleshooting an issue. It otherwise works silently in the background and stays out of the way. Still, it’s a popular troubleshooting measure for when your Macbook won’t charge. Here’s how to reset SMC on any Mac.
Please note that you can’t reset SMC manually on any Mac with Apple chips. For those, you simply need to reboot the computer, and that’s all you can really do.
Also try: How to quickly reinstall macOS on any Mac
There are a few different ways to reset your SMC. It really depends on whether you have a Macbook or an iMac. It also matters whether or not you have a removable battery in your Macbook or not. We’ll cover all three possible scenarios.
Again, please note that folks with Apple silicon can’t use any of the below methods. Apple says to simply turn your Macbook off and on again.
Reset SMC on a Macbook without a removable battery
Here’s how to reset SMC on modern, non-Apple silicon Macbooks without removable batteries.
Turn off your Macbook. It also doesn’t hurt to remove any USB devices so only the charger is plugged in.
While off, press and hold Control+Option+Shift.
While still holding the aforementioned keys, press and hold the power button.
Hold all four buttons for ten seconds.
Release all of the keys, and then hit the power button again to turn your Macbook back on.
Note — If your Macbook has a T2 chip, you’re going to use the Right Shift button. If your Macbook doesn’t have a T2 chip, you’ll use the Left Shift button. In either case, Apple says to specifically use the left Option and Control buttons.
If it doesn’t work the first time, the most likely culprit is the timing. Make sure you have all the buttons held down for a full ten count. You can use the stopwatch function on your phone to make sure you do it long enough.

Oliver Cragg / Android Authority
Newer Macbooks with removable batteries have an even easier time with this than Macbooks with non-removable batteries.
Power down your Macbook.
Remove your Macbook’s battery.
Press and hold the power button for five seconds.
Replace the battery and power on your Macbook.
Reset SMC on any iMac or any desktop Mac
Finally, we move on to the desktop options. These are the easiest to do and should take you less than one minute.
Power down your iMac.
Unplug the power cable and count to 15 seconds. Plug the cord back in.
Note — You can unplug your Mac from the wall or from the machine itself. It’s your call.
Once plugged in, wait at least five seconds, then turn on your Mac.

FAQ
Not really, no. It’s just not something you’ll want to do frequently. Resets can go wrong and cause some annoying glitches or boot issues. We recommend only resetting the SMC if you absolutely have to.
A neat trick for this is to disconnect your Mac from the Internet before resetting the SMC and have it forget the networks, so it doesn’t reconnect after your reboot. From there, reset the SMC. If it worked, your time and date will be wrong when you reboot. Simply reconnect to the Internet, and the time and date will rectify itself.
No. None of the methods in this article will work for an M1 or M2-powered Mac. Apple says that all you should need to do is reboot if you use Apple silicon.

The Task Manager’s Startup tab provides you with insights on what exactly are the apps that launch at startup.
The Startup folder’s location on Windows 10 PCs is not always easy to find for users, so we made a guide to help you out.
After you access the Startup Folder, you can add and remove software or programs to & from it.
The software and programs you add to this folder are set to run automatically when Windows starts.
Windows 10’s Task Manager utility includes a Startup tab. That is Windows 10’s default startup manager with which users can disable startup software.
However, the Task Manager’s tab doesn’t include any options for users to add programs to the startup. So, some users might look for startup settings on software windows to add new programs to the system startup.
Yet, Windows 10 includes a Startup folder to which users can add programs and files. All software and programs within that folder will run automatically when Windows starts.
What is the Startup folder? The Startup folder is an in-built Windows feature (first introduced in Windows 95) that allows users to set up those particular apps and programs that will automatically run when Windows starts.
The folder is buried within a series of subfolders and can be hard to find.
How can I manage the Windows 10 Startup folder? Some users might wonder where is the Startup folder on their PC, how to open it and how to add or remove the software from it. In the text below you will find answers to all of these.
1. Open the Startup folder using File ExplorerFor most users, the Startup folder is located at this address:
There is also a second All Users Startup folder that should be located under:
C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartupAs you can see, the full path for the Startup folder is this:
C:UsersUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStartMenuProgramsStartupUsers will need to replace USERNAME with their actual user account name, and then enter that path in File Explorer. That path will open the folder shown in the snapshot directly below.
2. Access the Startup Folder using Run1. Press the Windows key + R hotkey to open the Run dialog.
2. To open the Admin User Startup folder, enter shell:startup in the text box.
3. To open the All Users Startup folder, enter shell:common startup in the text box.
Expert tip:
5. The Startup folder is now opened on your computer.
A quick and easy way to open the Startup folder on your PC is to use the built-in Run dialog. It works as a shortcut and all you need to do is input the appropriate command, then the folder will open.
3. Add Software to the Startup FolderWith the Startup folder open in File Explorer, users can now add new program shortcuts to the system startup. In addition, users can also include file shortcuts within that folder.
Then the files the Startup folder includes will usually open with their default software. This is how users can add shortcuts to the Windows Startup folder.
Select a program or document to include in the startup, and press the OK button.
Press the Next button.
Then press the Finish button. The Startup folder will now include the selected software or file.
The software in the Startup folder will open after you’ve restarted Windows.
4. Remove Software From the Startup FolderUsers can also press the Ctrl + A keyboard shortcut to select all shortcuts within the Startup folder. Then press File Explorer’s Delete button to erase them.
Task Manager’s Start-up tab in Windows 10 will also list the programs that users have added to the Startup folder.
Windows 7 users can uncheck the item checkboxes on that tab to disable programs starting during startup. So, that’s how users can add new software and files to Windows’ Startup folder.
However, filling that folder up will slow down the system’s startup. Lots of startup software will also drain system resources. Therefore, don’t add too many things to the folder.

Depending on your exact circumstances, encountering this issue will stop you from being able to share the project you worked on with your team, or your family will not get the entire batch of photos from your last vacation.

Fixing this issue is simple, and in today’s article, we’ll show you a couple of methods that you can use to fix this problem for good.
What can I do if I can’t open a zip file on Mac? 1. Use WinZipIf you can’t open a zip file, you might not have the proper software for handling zip files. This is where WinZip can come in handy since it’s one of the best tools for creating and opening zip files.
The software supports various file formats, including RAR, 7Z, ISO, IMG, TAR, GZ, TAZ, TGZ, BZ2, and many others. In addition to handling zip files, WinZip can also repair zip files, which will surely come in handy.
This powerful software also enables you to break a big file (ex. ISO image), into tiny chunks without affecting the content of the image in any way. This will allow you to send emails to your work teammates without having to worry about the limitations your email provider has when it comes to the size of the attachments.
More than that, if you’re using a cloud service to store your files safely online, being able to split archives and rebuild them after the upload on multiple accounts can make a huge difference.
The software also offers other features such as the ability to unzip multiple archives simultaneously, or to protect your zip files with a password, so it’s definitely one of the best archiving tools on the market.
Other great features:
Can work as a file manager
File splitting
Cloud backup
Ability to manage files on your local network, PC, and cloud
Available on multiple platforms
128/256 AES
Encryption
Technology
WinZip
If you can’t open zip files on Mac, WinZip is the tool that can easily repair and open zip files.

2. Use Unarchiver or StuffitEven though these tools don’t match the capabilities present in the software option mentioned before, they do offer you the capability to open and edit archive files on Mac.
Download and install one of the following applications:
Unarchiver
Stuffit
Keka
After the application is installed, use the software to open the zip archive.

3. Use the Terminal
When the Terminal opens, you can use one of the following commands:
This is the quickest method to open and unzip a zip file on Mac, but doesn’t offer the same range of features that the software mentioned above do.
If you’re not a fan of third-party software, you can always unzip files using the Terminal, but be careful if you choose to do so, as any mistakes here could determine your system to malfunction.
