Suggested March 2024 How To Set The Print Screen Button To Open The Snipping Tool In Windows

Keyboard shortcuts can streamline all sorts of actions in Windows. Depending on your keyboard, these can be as simple as a single press. But what if you’re not satisfied with what a shortcut can do? Take the Print Screen button, which allows you to capture a screenshot and paste it into an image editor or word document. If you think it would be much more helpful to press the button and open the built-in Snipping Tool in Windows 10 and 11, follow this guide to learn how to set up this configuration.

Good to know: Snipping Tool not working in Windows? We offer a few solutions that are proven to work.

How to Make the Print Screen Key Open the Snipping Tool

Back when Microsoft’s MS-DOS was the primary system in use, hitting the Print Screen key sent whatever was on the screen to the computer’s memory to be printed.

The Print Screen button’s current function is a relic of a bygone era, and even Microsoft plans to change its modus operandi. Actually, evidence has surfaced (via Windows 11 Beta preview builds) that the tech giant plans to remap the key to open the Snipping Tool in Windows by default.

1. Enable Accessibility Setting

To be clear, you can currently remap the key manually, but an upcoming Windows update may turn it on by default. After the update, if you wish, you can turn it off so that it doesn’t open the app.

Scroll down and select “Keyboard” under the “Interaction” section.

Toggle on the switch for “Use the Print screen button to open screen snipping.”

Other than that specific remapping setting, there is no way for you to remap your other regular keys in Windows – unless you have a gaming keyboard with built-in remapping and macro support. That’s where Microsoft PowerToys come in.

It’s a free download, and the utility is meant for power users to tweak how Windows works – this includes remapping the keyboard or mouse buttons. If you plan on remapping other keys apart from Print Screen, this option is for you.

    2. Using Microsoft PowerToys

The first step is to download and install PowerToys from Microsoft, either through the Microsoft Store, an executable on GitHub, or Windows Package Manager. Based on your computer’s architecture, you must download the x64 or the Arm64 version.

Note: if you want to install Git and Git Bash on Windows, you can learn how to do it.

Once installed, PowerToys should open to the welcome splash screen or sit in your taskbar’s tray icons.

Ensure that the “Enable Keyboard Manager” switch is toggled to green.

This opens another window with a short explanation. There are two columns: “Physical Key” and “Mapped To.” Essentially, it will list the keys that will be mapped and their new actions.

Once set up, you can use your newly-created shortcut to automatically open the Snipping Tool when you press the Print Screen key.

Frequently Asked Questions Can you remap the buttons on your mouse with PowerToys?

While there are plenty of customizable options for your mouse and pointer, you can’t change what the buttons do. However, PowerToys provides accessibility features, such as pointer location, screen jumping, and cursor highlighting.

Can you use the remapped shortcuts when PowerToys isn’t running?

No. For your shortcuts and modifications to work, you must have PowerToys installed and running in the background. By default, PowerToys is added to your system’s startup applications and automatically runs when you log in to your computer. You can find the toggle for this option in the “General” tab under the “Appearance and Behavior” heading.

Can I use PowerToys to remap any keyboard shortcuts?

While PowerToys is incredibly useful, it has limitations. For example, the Windows + L and Control + Alt + Del keys can’t be remapped, as they are reserved for the Windows operating system. In most cases, the Fn key (Function) can’t be remapped either, but the F1 to F12 keys can.

If you are a gamer, you also can’t remap the Windows + G combination. In theory, it’s possible, but you’ll find that it will always open the Windows Game Bar even when reassigned. However, you can disable the Game Bar in Windows Settings, which makes it a bit easier.

How To Fix Screen Tearing Problem In Windows

Screen tearing is an issue mostly prominent while playing games or watching videos. During such tasks, the screen has to continuously process the frame information and display it on the screen instantly. Sometimes the device might fail to do so, causing the screen tearing issue.

The screen tearing usually occurs when the GPU’s frame rate and the monitor’s refresh rate are not in sync. The GPU sends images faster than the monitor can render, causing it to display only half processed images

But this does not mean your monitor is defective. Instead, it’s a common issue that may occur in any monitor and can be fixed very easily.

While the syncing technologies are a great way to solve the screen tearing issue, you need to have a graphics card that can support them.

There are other things you can do or settings you can tweak to solve the screen tearing issue.

But before moving on to the fixes, try rebooting your PC once and see if it resolves the problem. If it doesn’t, go through the fixes mentioned below to solve the screen tearing issue:

As discussed earlier, the screen tearing issue is caused due to the difference between the monitor’s refresh rate and the GPU’s frame rate. You can try changing the resolution and refresh rate of your display to see if it solves the issue.

                                To change your display’s resolution:

Try out each mode and check if it solves the issue.

VSync was developed with the sole purpose of solving the screen tearing issue. It limits the frame rate output of a GPU to match the monitor’s refresh rate.

If your GPU comes equipped with VSync, depending on the circumstances, you can enable or disable it to resolve the screen tearing.

To enable/disable VSync on NVIDIA’s GPU, follow the steps below:

Follow the steps below to enable VSync on AMD’s GPU:

You can manually lower the fps of your GPU to match the refresh rate of your monitor.

The process to do so may vary depending on the graphics card you’re using.

Follow the steps below to set the fps limit on your GPU:

The Game Mode is a new feature introduced on Windows to optimize the gaming experience. This feature allows users to record and stream gameplay, take screenshots within games and optimize the system to deliver smooth performance.

But there have been reported instances of screen tearing while playing games on Game Mode. So you can try disabling it to see if it can solve the problem.

To disable Game Mode go through the steps mentioned below:

Now restart the system and run the game again. If the error still exists, you can also try disabling full-screen optimizations. To disable it:

Reboot once again and check if the issue is resolved.

Outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can also cause the screen tearing issue while playing games. Make sure the latest drivers are installed for smooth performance and fewer issues.

To update graphics drivers, follow these steps:

If the latest updates are already installed on your device, you can reinstall them to fix any corruption.

To reinstall your graphics drivers, follow the above process up to the 2nd step, and then

Some games have the frame limit feature turned on by default to keep the performance smooth and consistent. The feature can sometimes interfere with the rendering process and cause the screen tearing issue.

Try disabling the feature to check if that’s causing the issue. The steps to disable the frame limit may vary, depending on the game you’re playing.

Go to your game’s settings, look for the frame limit feature, and turn it off.

If your GPU does not receive enough power required by a specific, it can cause the issue of screen tearing.

You can choose other performance-based power plans while playing games or watching movies to avoid the issue.

To choose another power plan, go through the steps below:

                                Now reboot your device.

Some users also encounter screen tearing while performing tasks on a browser. If you’re facing a similar issue, try switching to another browser to check if the problem is related to the browser or the system.

If nothing else is working, you should probably consider upgrading your graphics card or the monitor.

Not every component is perfectly compatible with another. And as new devices and features roll out every year, old devices gradually lose compatibility.

Check if your monitor or GPU is getting old or if they’re compatible. Identify what requires upgrading and take action accordingly.

What To Do If The Windows Store Won’t Open

The Windows Store, now known as the Microsoft Store, is the official digital storefront that’s included with Windows 10 by default.  You can find apps, software, professional and personal devices, resources, and games to download and use on your Windows device.

To access the Microsoft Store, you can use the web version to browse through and find additional items that are exclusive to the web version. You can also browse and install some free apps from the Microsoft Store without signing into Windows 10 using your Microsoft Account.  Another way is to use the Store webpage for Windows apps.

                                Table of Contents

However, the challenge comes when you need some Windows apps, which are only exclusively available on the Microsoft Store, but the Windows Store won’t open. We’ve rounded up some helpful tips to show you what to do if the Windows Store won’t open.

Note: The steps in this article apply to Windows 10.

How To Fix When The Windows Store Won’t Open

Before you get to the fixes for the Windows Store not working or not opening issue, here are a few things you can check for:

Check Your Computer’s Location, Date And Time Settings

If your computer’s date and time are inaccurate, the Windows Store won’t open. This may sound odd but it affects how the Store works. When the Store boots up, it tracks time so it’s always checking to see if your computer’s time and the Store’s time are in sync.

Toggle the Set the time automatically slider to Off, wait for it to process your request, and then toggle it back to On. This will update your time to the most accurate setting.

Once your location, date and time settings are accurate, try opening the Windows Store again and see if it works.

                                Clear The Windows Store Cache

Over time, the Windows Store cache may become corrupted. This may cause the Store not to open or work properly. Clearing the Store’s cache can help resolve any underlying issues or glitches.

A blank Command Prompt window will appear and close after a few seconds. During this time, the cache will be reset, and once the window closes, you can try to open the Windows Store again.

                                Update Windows and Windows Store

Microsoft constantly provides updates and bug fixes for Windows users. As frequent as the Windows 10 updates may come, they just might be the fix you need to improve the Windows Store and get it working again.

                                Reset Windows Store

If the Windows Store still won’t open, you can reset it back to default settings.

Note: Resetting the Windows Store will clear your settings, preferences, and login details among other things, but it doesn’t delete your purchases or installed apps.

Take Ownership Of The WindowsApp Folder

The WindowsApp folder contains all the apps automatically installed on your hard drive, but it’s not easily accessible. If you’re not the owner of the WindowsApp folder on your computer, the Windows Store may not work properly.

You need to set yourself as the owner of the folder and have full control over it to allow the Store to open and work well.

Once you’ve taken ownership of the WindowsApp folder, open it and check if you can launch the Windows Store.

                                Check Proxy Settings

The Windows Store may not open or work well if your device’s network settings are configured incorrectly. In such cases, a misconfigured proxy setting could affect the Windows Store.

To resolve the problem and get the Windows Store working again, disable the proxy and uninstall any VPN if you’ve installed one.

                                Select Proxy.

Under Manual proxy setup, set the Use a proxy server to Off, and then try to open the Windows Store again.

                                Edit The Registry

If you’re trying to open the Windows Store and get a connection error, checking and editing the registry will help prevent further problems that such errors can bring. Always make sure to backup the registry before making any changes there.

                                Navigate to the folder path:

                                HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionNetworkListProfiles Change DNS Address

Sometimes you may see the 0x80131500 error when trying to open the Windows Store. In this case, your computer is probably connecting to the internet via DNS servers that are assigned automatically by your home networking setup or your ISP.

                                Re-register Windows Store

It’s not easy to uninstall Windows Store, but you can re-register it on your computer.

Enter the following command and press Enter:

                                "& {$manifest = (Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore).InstallLocation + 'AppxManifest.xml' ; Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $manifest}"

Close PowerShell and try to open Windows Store again.

                                Reinstall Windows Store

If all else fails, reinstall the Windows Store. You can do this through Windows PowerShell.

In Windows PowerShell, type remove-appxpackage followed by a space, and then paste the PackageName you copied to the clipboard. The PackageName may look something like this:

                                remove-appxpackage Microsoft.WindowsStore_(number)_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe

Press Enter to run the command.

Restart your computer and reinstall Windows Store. To do this, go back to PowerShell and type:

Add-AppxPackage -register "C:Program FilesWindowsAppsMicrosoft.WindowsStore_11804.1001.8.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbweAppxManifest.xml" –DisableDevelopmentMode Get Your Windows Store Back

Here’s How To Open Nef Files In Windows 10

Here’s how to open NEF files in Windows 10

Using specialized software to open a NEF file will keep all the information stored inside.

Take a look at our picks below to find the best software that easily converts NEF to JPG Windows.

ViewNX2 is a great free option that also allows you to control hue, tone, and sharpness.

We’ve also selected Adobe Photoshop, Capture NX2, and other paid NEF file viewers for Windows.

One tool to open them all!

Popular file formats don’t need specific software anymore. Just download File Viewer Plus 4 and open them all in the same environment. Documents, media, archives, email, camera, infographics, source codes and many more – all are supported by this tool. Here’s what it does:

                                Opens over 300 file types

                                Edit, save and convert files

                                Batch file conversion

Nikon Electronic Format, a RAW file format containing digital photos taken by a Nikon camera. This format has detailed images as captured by the camera’s sensors, no compression or loss of quality.

The NEF file format stores metadata of the images such as the model of the camera itself, settings, lens information, and other details.

Stuff like the hue, tone, sharpness, or white balance is applied, but these are retained as instruction sets that come with the NEF file, and can be changed as many times as you want without affecting data.

With Nikon’s Capture NX2 software or other imaging programs, the after-capture processing of NEF files gives you greater control over the final image than when JPEG or TIFF files are processed.

You can then save them as TIFF, JPEG , or as NEF again. Provided that the original NEF file is preserved, the digital negative remains untouched and processing doesn’t change the original instruction set.

It is exclusive to Nikon cameras, and sometimes it is referred to as digital negatives and is written to the camera’s memory card in either uncompressed or lossless compressed format.

                                1. Use Adobe Photoshop

There’s no way you can talk about opening or editing image files without the name Adobe Photoshop popping into your mind.

This raster-based image editor can also be used as a NEF file opener. More so, the toolset allows you to take the NEF file and then turn it into a more manageable format, such as JPG or BMP.

Besides, NEF files could always use a little bit of doctoring themselves, and that is something that Adobe Photoshop can easily handle as well.

Normally, this world-class program is subscription-based to use, but now you can test it for a full 7 days without any type of limitations.

Note: If Photoshop cannot open the files, make sure you install the latest Camera RAW plugin supported by your version of Photoshop and try opening them again.

How do I process NEF files in my camera?

Here are the steps you can take to process the NEF files in your Nikon DSLR camera prior to opening the file:

In the Retouch menu, find NEF in-camera processing feature.

This lets you process NEF RAW files into JPGs within the camera, and is useful for shooting RAW files or sharing a quick JPG

Adjust Picture Controls or change images from color options like Black & White (B&W) or Sepia, change white balance, exposure compensation and so much more.

Once you’re done with and satisfied with the adjustments, preview it by pushing the magnifying glass button on the back of the camera.

Select EXE when you’re ready to save the JPG file to your media or memory card.

The original NEF file will be saved on the memory or media card so you can revert to the original capture when opening the NEF file on your computer.

If you have the right codec on your PC, you can open or view NEF files without the need for more software. For Windows 10, you don’t need to install the Microsoft Camera Codec Pack.

The codecs are built-in to the operating system, but should you want to add support for DNG formats, or others not supported, you would have to download a codec.

The Microsoft Camera Codec Pack enables viewing of a variety of device-specific file formats in Windows Live Photo Gallery and other software-based in Windows Imaging Codecs (WIC).

Installing it will allow supported RAW camera files to be opened or viewable in File Explorer and is available in 32-bit or 64-bit versions.

How do I convert a NEF file on Windows 10?

You can convert NEF files to different formats using a file converter or an image viewer/editor then save to a different format such as JPG, RAW, PNG, TIFF, PSD, GIF, and many others.

There are other online options that you can use to convert your NEF files to open in Windows 10 like Zamzar, chúng tôi and Online RAW converter that convert the NEF files to BMP, GIF, JPG, PDF, and TDG among others.
