Background, Expectations, & Best Practices

Staying up to date with software can sometimes be a confusing and frustrating task, these issues are usually caused by the various ways that different software is designed to update and where it was installed from. The good news is that Apple is continually improving how updates happen. With its latest operating system, macOS Sierra, there are some sharp features to make updating software more smooth and seamless. This won’t apply in all instances, but still helps provide an overall improved user experience.

First, let’s define some of the vocabulary we’ll be using. We’ll refer to software as the applications (programs), operating system (macOS) and other operating information used by your Mac hardware. In the last several years using app (short for application) has become more common than using program when referring to software. We’ll define apps as computer software designed and written to fulfill a particular purpose.

There are different ways to install and update apps on your Mac, the most common ways are the Mac App Store, within the app itself, or the web. Less commonly you may see apps that are loaded from flash drives or CD’s.

Concerns

A common concern that is often shared is that updating apps and especially operating systems will cause a problem. Often times this fear is caused by the past experience of an issue after doing an update or hearing stories from others. This is definitely up to personal preference, but here are a couple of things to keep in mind…

App and operating system updates typically provide bug fixes, security updates, and introduce new features. While it’s possible that installing an update may cause an issue, it’s also possible that not installing the update could cause problems. This is a good reminder that anything can fail and you should have a backup strategy in place. Even robust systems that power the internet like Amazon Web Services can and do fail.

As a general rule of thumb, I typically install updates as soon as they are available. However, if you’re a bit more hesitant, you can wait a week or two to see if others run into any problems and then continue on performing updates. Just don’t wait too long as this can cause more security and compatibility issues the longer you postpone.

From my experience there seems to be a bit more anxiety with software updates for iPhones than Macs. This is likely because we rely on our smartphones so much and it can feel crippling to not have our primary communication device functioning normally.

Next week we’ll dive into updating software on iOS (iPhone and iPad) in particular. Another way to think about updates is it’s like driving a car. The possibility of being in an accident doesn’t stop you from traveling in your vehicle, you just likely use your safety belt, have insurance, and drive intentionally to reduce the risks.

Let’s dive deeper and look at updating within macOS and the App Store and then we’ll take a look at updating within apps and through the web. Follow along to build experience, exposure, and confidence with updating apps.

The App Store in macOS

At the top of the window you’ll see the updates that are available to install. The App Store in macOS will automatically let you know when updates are available, but it won’t install them without your authorization (you can also change these settings, which we’ll get to in a moment).

You’ll now be able to make sure your settings are to your liking. Even if you check off all the boxes and allow macOS and the App Store to automatically check for and download updates, you’ll still be notified and have to authorize their installation. But again, these settings will come down to your personal preferences.

Below the update preferences you’ll notice a manual Check Now button that you can use in conjunction with the auto-check for updates feature or use on its own if you prefer to turn that feature off.

The current macOS version is Sierra, if you notice that you’re not on Sierra, it is a free update from the App Store. Sometimes with older Macs the newest operating system may run a bit slower, but as an example my parents are running Sierra on a 2009 iMac with solid performance. Apple does a fantastic job optimizing macOS with their hardware.

Now you’ll be able to download Sierra. Note that downloading the new macOS operating system won’t automatically install it, you can do that whenever you’d like as they are two separate steps.

As you can see, when you choose to download your applications through the App Store it makes the process of updating much easier and more organized. Another benefit of utilizing the App Store is that Apple vets and approves all the apps available so you can rest assured that they are safe and work as described.

Updating apps downloaded from the web

The first example we’ll look at is a piece of third-party software that I had to download from Logitech’s website for my wireless mouse (far and away the best I’ve used). Because I downloaded it directly from the manufacturer I can’t use the App Store to help with updates. The following will apply to most apps you download from the web but may vary a bit app to app…

Since October 2024, Touch ID has been available on MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. The Touch ID doubles as the Power button, too. Besides that, you can get the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and use it on any Apple silicon Mac like Mac mini, Mac Studio, iMac, etc.

What you can do with Touch ID on your Mac

So, just how secure is Touch ID on the Mac?

Touch ID and your security

Touch ID on the Mac provides the same strong security and privacy that iOS users have grown accustomed to. That’s because your Mac comes with a special chip that has the so-called Secure Enclave, which keeps mathematical representations of your saved prints, as well as Apple Pay tokens, safely encrypted. All communications between the Touch ID sensor and the rest of the system go through that chip.

The main processor, the operating system, and any first or third-party apps cannot access the Touch ID sensor directly. All they get from the Touch ID subsystem is a simple confirmation upon a successful match. Apple does not save your fingerprints into the cloud, nor does it synchronize saved prints between devices via iCloud.

How to set up Touch ID on Mac

While setting up your new or erased Mac, you’re asked if you would like to use Touch ID. This is true even when you set up your Mac mini, Mac Studio, or iMac using the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID.

However, if you didn’t set up Touch ID then or want to add more fingerprints, follow these easy instructions:

Launch System Settings on your Mac.

Select Touch ID & Password from the left side.

Enter your Mac’s password and hit Unlock.

Now, repeatedly place (not press) and lift your finger on the Touch ID sensor of your MacBook or Magic Keyboard until all the patterns are filled with red-pink lines. Make small adjustments to the position of your finger each time so that the system captures the edges of your print.

You can now unlock your Mac using your fingerprint and do everything else that Touch ID supports.

You can register up to three fingerprints with Touch ID on your Mac versus five on your iPhone or iPad.

What to do after setting up Touch ID

You can select to use Touch ID for:

Unlocking your Mac: Bypass typing your Mac account’s password on the login screen and unlock the computer with your fingerprint.

Apple Pay: Use your fingerprint to make purchases with Apple Pay.

iTunes, App Store, and Apple Books: Use Touch ID to authorize purchases made on the Mac App Store, iTunes Store, and Books Store.

Autofill passwords: Confirm using Touch ID to fill saved passwords from iCloud Keychain.

User switching: If you have created multiple users for your Mac, you can switch between them using Touch ID.

Like with your iPhone and iPad, macOS lets you name any saved fingerprint (i.e., Middle Finger, Right Thumb, and so forth) so that it’s easier to identify in the list. However, you cannot place your finger on the Touch ID sensor to have System Settings highlight a matched print in the list, as you can on iOS.

Keep in mind that you may be asked to enter your administrative password if you’ve made changes to the fingerprints that you’ve enrolled in Touch ID.

Using Touch ID on Mac

For unlocking and user switching

Touch ID can save you from typing your account password on the Login screen.

After the initial password-based login, you can authenticate with Touch ID instead of your password. As mentioned in the opening section of this article, Touch ID can be used to open locked System Settings features, the Passwords section in Safari preferences, and any password-protected notes in the Notes app.

And if your computer is set up for multiple users and each user account has Touch ID set up, you can use the fingerprint sensor to quickly switch to any logged-in user accounts via the Fast User Switching feature.

On the App Store and iTunes Store

For security reasons, your Mac may ask you to enter your password on your first store purchase or if you’ve made changes to the fingerprints that you’ve enrolled in Touch ID.

For Apple Pay on websites in Safari

Authorize your purchase by placing one of the registered fingers on the Touch ID sensor when a prompt appears on the Touch Bar. A check mark followed by “Done” appears when the purchase is completed.

Your bank may only display the transactions made from your computer, or you might see all transactions made from your credit or debit card account, including those made from all Apple Pay devices and your plastic cards.

Keep in mind that you might see different transaction amounts from locations such as restaurants, gas service stations, hotels, and car rental companies because some banks provide only initial authorization amounts to Wallet.

Touch ID troubleshooting tips

Your Mac’s fingerprint sensor does not work well with wet or oily fingers because moisture, lotions, sweat, oils, cuts, or dry skin might affect fingerprint recognition. Due to these technological restrictions, you’re likely to experience temporary hiccups with Touch ID after activities like exercising, showering, swimming, or cooking, including any other conditions or changes that affect your fingerprint.

You can clean your Mac’s Touch ID sensor the same way you would clean the display: either use a microfiber cloth to remove finger oils and residue or dampen a soft, lint-free cloth with water only, then use it to clean the Touch ID sensor.

Shut down your Mac and unplug the power adaptor before cleaning the sensor.

Delete enrolled fingerprints on Mac

As mentioned, your Mac can remember up to three different fingerprints. You can easily remove one of the enrolled fingerprints via these steps:

Enter Mac’s password and hit Unlock.

To use this fingerprint later, you’ll need to add it again there.

How To Use A Gopro Camera As Your Webcam On A Mac

What do you need

In order to set up your GoPro Camera as a webcam for video conferencing, you will need to have the following items in check:

GoPro HERO8 Black camera

 USB-C cable that came with your GoPro

A macOS machine (MacBook, Mac, or Mac mini)

A USB adapter/dongle if your Mac system doesn’t have a USB-C port

Your camera’s microSD card, adapter and card reader

How to enable a GoPro camera as your virtual camera on a Mac

Once you have made sure that you have all the items listed above, you can proceed to enable the GoPro Camera as your default webcam on a Mac.

Since the ability to use the GoPro as a webcam arrives through the latest beta firmware, you first need to update your camera software to get the functionality. To update to the latest beta build, download the GoPro Webcam Beta Firmware on your Mac and unzip the file which will create a folder in the name of the .zip file.

Now, insert your camera’s SD card to your Mac by placing it inside its SD card adapter and then inserting it into the native SD card reader. If your Mac doesn’t have an inbuilt SD card reader, you will need an external SD card reader to plug into the USB port. Once your micro SD is detected on the Mac, copy the extracted folder (extracted from the .ZIP file) onto the SD card using Finder.

To install the GoPro beta firmware, power OFF your camera, insert the micro SD card into the camera and then power it back ON. The camera will be able to update its software automatically and will beep during the installation process. Once the software is installed, you will be able to see a checkmark on the GoPro screen.

Note: In case the update failed, remove and re-insert the battery and then power ON the camera for allowing it to install the firmware again. Follow this support page for more details on the installation. 

Download and install GoPro Webcam Desktop Utility on your Mac

After the beta firmware on your Go Pro is installed, you can now install the GoPro Webcam Desktop Utility on your Mac. You first need to download the GoPro Webcam Desktop Utility, open the “.PKG” file and follow the on-screen instructions to install the GoPro tool for your Mac.

Once the installation is complete, a new GoPro icon will appear in the Menu bar.

Setting up your GoPro webcam

Before you connect your GoPro Camera to the Mac, it’s important that you set it up right, so that it’s perfect for being used as your default webcam. Since a GoPro is known to have a wider field of view than most cameras, you can set it up nearer to you than your regular webcam. You can position it in front of Mac’s screen like on a desk or mount it on top of Mac’s screen using your existing GoPro mounts.

Additionally, you can purchase and use GoPro’s own accessories like the Jaws Flex Clamp, Magnetic Swivel Clip, Suction Cup, and Gooseneck to mount your GoPro in different angles and creative point-of-views.

Connecting your GoPro to the Mac

Now that you have set up your GoPro in position to be used as a webcam, you can connect it to your Mac using the USB-C cable that came with your Go Pro. After connecting the two devices, power ON your GoPro.

The GoPro icon in your Mac’s Menu bar will now display a blue dot to indicate that it has successfully established a connection with the GoPro.

At the same time, the display on your GoPro will also show the USB icon, indicating that it is currently in USB Mode.

* Reset your Cable/DSL modem – You’ll usually want to reset this in combination with your wireless router. Reset this first so the DHCP information will be pulled to the wireless router properly.

* Change Wireless Channels – sometimes your router’s wireless broadcast channel will interfere with a neighbors, be sure you have your router set to a unique channel. Even if it’s a weak signal there can still be interference.

* Make sure Wireless/Airport card software & firmware is up to date – This is usually done just by going to the Software Update menu, if there are any updates available for your Mac or Airport, install them.

Mac Wireless Troubleshooting: Intermediate

* Change wireless security protocol – You shouldn’t be using WEP anyway for security reasons, but sometimes changing from WEP to WPA/WPA2 or WPA to WPA2 can resolve wireless connection difficulties.

* Make sure router firmware is up to date – Check your router manufacturers website for firmware updates, if there are any available, install them.

* Delete and recreate connection – Try deleting and recreating/reestablishing the wireless connection, sometimes a setting can be corrupted and this may fix it.

* Create a new Network Location – Similar to the above suggestion, try creating a new and different wireless network location to see if it resolves the connection problems.

* Change DHCP auto settings to manual – sometimes there is a problem with the DHCP server, and if you manually set an IP address on the network you can be fine. Remember to set the IP to a high number so it wouldn’t interfere with other DHCP machines. As long as you have the subnet mask, router, and DNS settings configured manually as well, this shouldn’t be a problem.

* Disable “Wireless G/N/B only” mode – Sometimes a setting is selected that only broadcasts your wireless signal in Wireless B, G, or N mode (depending on the routers abilities). If this is set, try disabling it.

Mac Wireless Connection Problem Troubleshooting: Advanced

* Zap the PRAM – Reboot your Mac and hold Command+Option+P+R during restart until you hear another chime, let the Mac boot as usual.

* Delete Wireless Config files – Delete com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist and com.apple.internetconfig.plist files from ~/Library/Preferences and reboot

* Trash your home directories SystemConfiguration – Remove all files within ~/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ and then reboot your Mac.

* Reset your Mac’s System Management Controller (SMC) – For MacBook and MacBook Pro’s: Shutdown the MacBook/Pro, remove the battery, disconnect the power, hold the Power Key for 15 seconds. Replace the battery, reconnect power, and zap the PRAM and wait for 2 chimes before letting the keys go. Let boot as usual.
