Suggested March 2024 How To View & Take Photos In Widescreen (16:9) On Iphone

If you have any of the newer iPhones, you have probably noticed that when you take a picture with the camera, it always has black bars on either side of the image. The iPhone screen has different aspect ratio than the photo and therefore the image doesn’t fill up the entire screen.

Table of Contents

Luckily, there are a couple of ways you can take and view your already taken photos in widescreen format on the iPhone. In this post, I’ll show you how to edit photos so that they can be widescreen and how to take a photo in widescreen, though the latter option comes with some caveats.

Aspect Ratios

Before we get into the details, let’s try to understand why photos taken on the iPhone will have black bars on either side of the photo like shown below:

The iPhone takes photos with an aspect ratio of 4:3. Why? Well, apparently that is the preferred ratio in still photography because it captures more pixels in the picture and is the preferred format for print, etc. If they were to use a 16:9 ratio for photos, then you wouldn’t be able to capture as much in each shot.

Have you ever noticed that when you switch from photo to video on the iPhone, the camera zooms in? That is because HD video is shot at the 16:9 aspect ratio and therefore fills up the entire screen. The downside is that the shot has to be cropped and the field of view is considerably less.

In my opinion, Apple should have added an option to take 16:9 photos also and just given a warning to users that the resolution would be less than the max resolution possible with a 4:3 ratio picture. In my tests, a max resolution photo in 4:3 format from my iPhone 6S Plus was 4032 x 3024.

In iOS, there are two ways to get your photos into 16:9 widescreen ratio: either by editing the photo or by taking a picture while you are taking a video. If you edit a 4:3 photo and convert it to 16:9, the resulting resolution is 4032 x 2268. If you take a 16:9 photo while taking a video, the resolution ends up being 3840×2160.

So what does that mean? Basically, if you like the widescreen format, just keep taking photos in the standard 4:3 ratio and simply edit them to 16:9 at a later point like I did above. You’ll have to crop the image a little bit (height-wise), but you’ll get the highest resolution photo.

Widescreen Images on iPhone

OK, so now that you understand the mechanics behind how the photos are taken and displayed on your phone, let’s talk about the two ways to get widescreen photos. The first way is the simplest, but it requires you to take a video.

Open the Camera app and switch to video. When you start taking a video, you’ll see a white circle appear at the bottom of the screen. This allows you to take a picture while recording a video.

There are a couple of reasons why this isn’t the best way to get a widescreen photo. Firstly, you have to take a video in order to take the widescreen shot. Obviously, you can just delete the video later, but who wants to keep taking videos every time they want to take a photo?

Secondly, like I mentioned earlier, the resolution of the photo taken while in camera mode is less than if you simply edited the 4:3 standard photo. So let’s talk about how to edit a photo. Open the Photos app and tap on the photo you want to edit.

At the top right, go ahead and tap on the Edit link.

Now tap on the first icon towards the top, which is for rotating and cropping the image.

A few more icons will appear along with a wheel sort of thing that you can use to rotate the image. In our case, we need to tap on the aspect ratio button at the bottom, right next to the Cancel button.

Now you’ll get a popup with several different aspect ratios to choose from. You need to scroll all the way down to find the 16:9 ratio and tap on it.

Finally, you have to crop the image by moving it around with your finger. The portion that is inside the box is what will become your new widescreen photo.

Tap Done and your photo will now be in widescreen format! That’s about all there is to it. Unfortunately, there is no way to do this on a batch or set or photos in one go. You have to manually edit each photo that you want in widescreen format.

Camera+

If that sounds like too much of a pain, then you can download an app from the App Store called Camera+. You can change the shooting mode to 16:9 and have the images automatically stored in the normal camera roll.

Just tap on the little plus icon next to the big white circle button and then choose the widescreen icon in the menu that pops out. To save images to your camera roll, tap on the little hamburger icon (three lines), then tap on AutoSave and choose Camera Roll.

This is probably the easiest way to ensure that all your photos are taken in widescreen format without having to manually do anything else. The resolution of the image was also 4032×2268, so it’s also the max resolution possible in that format. You can do a lot of other great stuff with that app, so it’s totally worth the cost if you like widescreen images all the time.

How To View Network Adapter Details In Windows

Here we show you several ways to view the details of your network adapter in Windows: one is integrated into the system, and the other is a great Nirsoft tool called NetworkInterfacesView, which lets you dig a little deeper.

1. Using System Information Tool

One of the easiest ways to view network adapter details in Windows 10 and Windows 11 is to use the System Information tool, which provides details about each network interface separately. To open the System Information tool, follow the steps below:

You can also get the same information using the command line, but the information will be less than the one provided by the system information tool. To get network interface information through the command line, just open the command prompt (open Start, type cmd, and select Command Prompt) and issue the following command:

Ipconfig

/

all

This will show details about all the network interfaces, whether active or inactive.

In addition to using command prompt to learn more about Windows, try these useful Run commands to better manage your PC.

2. Using the NetworkInterfacesView Tool

NetworkInterfacesView is a nifty portable tool from Nirsoft. The benefit of NetworkInterfacesView is that it makes use of the Windows Registry to get information about the active and inactive network adapters. It will list both the network adapters being used, as well as those that have been used in the past, on the computer. It will give you three statuses of the devices:

Active devices will be shown with a green status icon.

Non-operational devices will be shown with a yellow status icon.

Disconnected devices will be shown with a red status icon.

To save details about an individual item, select the item, then “Save selected item” from the File menu. To save details about all the listed items, select “HTML Report – All items.”

NetworkInterfacesView shows the following information about each network adapter:

Device Name

Connection name

IP Address

Subnet mask

Default gateway

DNS Servers

DHCP information

DHCP Servers

Instance ID

Instance GUID

MTU

Status

MAC Address

All this information can be obtained from the system information tool (msinfo32), but NetworkInterfacesView lets you view network adapter details in a more friendly format.

Despite the more dated interface, the tool is still currently supported and works well for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11. Plus, it’s completely free to use.

3. Device Manager

View network adapter details in Windows using Device Manager. This built-in tool gives you details on all the hardware on your computer. It’s an often overlooked tool that provides a wealth of information.

Type Win + X and select “Device Manager.”

Expand “Network adapters.” You can see if there are any errors or warnings by looking for an X or ! icon beside any adapter. In this case, all is working well.

Navigate through each tab to view more details. The “Details” tab is ideal for viewing most any property about your network adapter. The “Events” tab shows recent events related to the device. You can also check for resource conflicts under “Resources.” Of course, you can add or remove drivers using the “Drivers” tab.

4. Network Connections

A final place to view network adapter details in Windows is through the Advanced Network Settings. This is also where you can enable and disable adapters as needed.

Select any network adapter to view more details.

If this doesn’t suit you, there’s another option.

You can view more details, configure the adapter, install/uninstall the adapter, and more.

Troubleshoot Network Adapters

If you’d like to do more than just view network adapter details, use the built-in Network Adapter Troubleshooter. It’s designed to help find and diagnose errors. When you have multiple network cards installed, this can help to quickly pinpoint the cause of a problem.

Open Start and type “network adapter.” Select “Find and fix problems with your network adapter” from the results, then proceed through the troubleshooting tool.

Frequently Asked Questions What if a network adapter is missing when I view network adapter details?

There are three possible problems if you’re missing a network adapter:

The network adapter isn’t installed properly – This usually only happens if you’ve just installed a new adapter or other new hardware and have knocked the network adapter loose in the process.

There’s a driver issue – This can happen when you first install a network adapter in Windows, after Windows Updates, and when upgrading to a new version of Windows. If Windows isn’t installing the right driver automatically, check the network adapter manufacturer for an updated driver.

The network adapter has gone bad – No PC hardware is immune from wearing out. Newer adapters may have a defect, your PC may have overheating issues, or it’s simply worn out (older adapters only).

How can I make Windows reinstall a network adapter?

If you’re having issues with a network adapter, sometimes the first step is to uninstall it from Windows, restart, and let Windows reinstall it. This often happens after Windows updates or after installing a bad driver.

Why do different methods show different network adapters in Windows?

This all depends on what types of network adapters the tool is designed to search for. For instance, in Device Manager, you may see more devices because this tool lists all the varieties of WAN ports that are supported by a single port. Other tools typically just list the one adapter since it handles all the connections.

How To View Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, And More Without An Account

Decided to take a break from social media by deleting your account but still want to view the occasional post? You might have noticed a problem. Popular apps like Instagram, Facebook, and Reddit now prevent non-account holders from freely accessing content on their networks. Luckily, there are a few workarounds that can help you bypass the restriction. In this turorial, we show you how to view posts and more without signing up.

Can You View Instagram Without Logging In?

While it used to be possible to view Instagram posts and profiles without an account, now things aren’t so straightforward. You do get limited access, although your experience quickly gets tainted by the repeated prompts to sign up with your username and password.

When trying to view an Instagram profile in a browser, either on desktop or mobile, you’ll be able to view a few posts, but if you scroll too far, you’ll be restricted. This happens if you’re using Firefox or Safari. In Chrome, you’ll be asked to log in from the get-go without even so much as a sneak peek of the profile you’re trying to view. The good news is that you can open posts; if you’re on PC you’ll need to open them in a new tab.

How to View Instagram Profiles and Stories Without an Account

Fortunately, there’s an easy way to get around this restriction and view Instagram profiles and stories. You’ll have to use an online service such as IGAnony, but there are many other options. You can access it in your browser. One thing to keep in mind is that this works only for public accounts.

Go to IGAnony and input the username of the account you want to view. (If you don’t know the exact account username, try performing a Google search like this: “name/nickname Instagram.”)

The profile you’re looking for should show up below.

Use the tabs at the top to select the type of content you want to view: Stories, Posts, or Highlights.

Tip: make your Instagram content stand out with camera filters and effects.

Search for Hashtags and Interests

You can’t access the Instagram’s search function without an account. Luckily, Google can help you do some basic searches. For instance, you can look for posts tagged with a certain hashtag – simply type into search something like “#technology hashtag instagram.” When I tried this I got the following results.

Furthermore, It’s possible to use a web tool such as Toolzu to search for profiles under a certain category. For instance, you can look for accounts associated with “Aquarium.”

How to View Twitter Content Without an Account

As with Instagram, to have access to content on Twitter without an account, you’ll have to use a browser – either on your PC or mobile. If you have the Twitter app on your phone, tapping on a Twitter link will automatically open the app, which will prompt you to log in.

For those who do have an account, here’s how to search Twitter like a pro.

Read Tweets From a Particular User

If you’re looking to read a post from a particular user, follow the steps below to find the user – even without an account.

Alternatively, you can search for the account directly in Google using “name/keyword twitter” to see the account (if they have one), as well as thumbnails, which shows their latest posts.

Note: you can’t see posts from private accounts, just like on Instagram.

Keep Up With What’s Trending

Now, maybe you were using Twitter to keep up with the latest trends. You can still do so by going to the #Explore tab and checking out the “Trends for you” section.

However, if you want to go beyond what Twitter is offering, third-party services like Trends24 offer a comprehensive view of what’s trending on Twitter. The website shows you the hottest hashtags over the last 24 hours, and you can even filter by country. The charts are upgraded every hour, so you can be sure you won’t miss anything.

Tip: had enough of Twitter? Here’s how you can delete your Twitter account.

Search Twitter

Searching Twitter without having an account is possible through the #Explore tab. Use the search bar at the top to look for usernames, topics, or any other keywords.

Once you press Enter, the search will show the top tab. You can switch to other tabs, including “Latest,” “People,” “Photos,” “and Videos” if you want to view more targeted search results.

What’s interesting is that Twitter’s Advanced search option doesn’t require an account to work. You can access it by tapping the three dots next to the search bar. Next, you can start searching using a string of words, an exact phrase, hashtags, filter by languageor time, and use many other options.

How to View Facebook Content Without an Account

Once upon a time, Facebook used to allow you to browse and search its network without many restrictions. Those days are gone now, so without an account, your experience is destined to be quite limited. Even so, there are still a few things you can do even without signing in.

View Facebook Posts

Before we proceed, keep in mind that many Facebook profiles are restricted (via Privacy settings, such as hiding their friends list) and therefore display only limited content. You won’t be able to view anything these people choose to share only with their friends on the network.

On mobile, account holders can share images with outside users via the “Share external” option. It can be accessed by opening the image in question and pressing on the three dots in the upper-right corner.

For posts with text and links, press on the three dots to the right of the postcard and select “Copy link.”

It’s possible to view Facebook content without an account on your desktop or mobile device using a browser. On mobile, you’ll get more intrusive requests to sign in with your account that can severely hamper your experience, so it may be better to use a PC instead.

Need more privacy on Facebook? Create a restricted list and share your posts and other content without worry.

Search for Accounts

Without logging in, you won’t have access to Facebook’s search, which lets you search for people. The good news is that you can still find who you’re looking for, but the results are a bit of a mixed bag – especially if the person you need to find has a pretty common name. If you’re looking for a celebrity or an institution, then it should be easy.

The first method is to use Google and perform a search among these lines “name facebook.” Once you press Enter, the search engine will list the accounts that match your query.

Social search engines like Social Searcher are also an option, although they tend to yield mixed results. On top of that, some of them require you to pay to gain full access to the data they can generate.

How to View Reddit Content Without an Account

Accessing Reddit without an account can be done, although if you want the better experience, we recommend you do so on your PC or use the mobile app. On your phone, you can also browse from the mobile browser, but you’ll be bombarded constantly by suggestions to use the app instead – unless you use a neat trick which we discuss below.

In your mobile browser, the experience is a bit annoying. You’ll constantly get asked if you want to view content using the Reddit app. The good news is that the Reddit app lets you view and browse content without issue. Just get it on your phone.

On the other hand, if, for whatever reason, you don’t want to download the app, you can use this trick to make browsing Reddit in your mobile browser bearable.

Tap on a Reddit link and open it in your mobile browser.

Replace the “www” of that link with “old.”

Now you can enjoy browsing Reddit for mobile without the constant interruptions.

Reddit currently maintains two versions of the website: the old one and the newer one, which actively invites mobile users to move to the app. The old one does not enforce any app-use restrictions, so if you don’t mind the outdated interface, this is the better way to browse Reddit in your mobile browser.

Search Reddit Without an Account

It’s possible to search Reddit like you normally would – even with an account. Just use the search bar at the top when browsing on your desktop by using keywords. On mobile, you’ll have to tap on the hamburger menu on the right to reveal the search bar.

How to View TikTok Content Without an Account

Surprisingly, TikTok is one of the friendlier social media apps that lets non-users easily browse. It’s possible to do so on desktop or mobile using your browser of choice.

View Clips and Search

The easiest way to access TikTok is via a link. Tap on it and let your default browser open it. Whether you’re on mobile or PC, it should work just fine, and you should be able to see the video. If, on the other hand, you’re targeting a particular user and wish to be able to browse their content, follow the path below.

Go to TikTok’s official page on desktop or mobile.

Search for the username using the bar at the top.

If you don’t want to see any particular TikToks and are just curious to see what the platform is all about, you can just browse. TikTok will automatically show you what’s trending in your region.

How to View LinkedIn Content Without an Account

If you’ve received a LinkedIn profile link, you can view it in the browser on your PC or mobile device even without an account. Most information, such as the introduction, work experience, and education, will be available. LinkedIn has various privacy options available, so you can’t see their profile picture or additional information if it has been hidden.

Note: you can only access a limited number of profiles per day before LinkedIn will revoke your access, asking you to create an account.

Searching for People

You can’t use LinkedIn’s search function and easily identify people on the network without an account. You can try using Google, but this method has yielded mixed results in testing. I personally couldn’t identify my LinkedIn account, although the results included some links that might have eventually lead to my page. On the other hand, I managed to find some acquaintances quite easily by searching for “name LinkedIn.”

An alternative would be to use the Social Searcher website, which searches for LinkedIn connections and not just Facebook contacts. It proved useful in testing.

Frequently Asked Questions Can I view the Facebook Marketplace without logging in to Facebook?

No. The Facebook Marketplace is an integrated part of Facebook, so you won’t be able to access it without an account. You may want to enlist the help of a friend who has a Facebook account. The only other option is a marketplace alternative such as Craigslist.

Can I deactivate my social media account as opposed to deleting it altogether?

In most cases, yes. All the apps we included on our list allow you to deactivate your account. If you’re not sure you want to leave social media for good, you can put your account on hold and return when you’re ready.

How To Force The Facebook App To Use An External Browser To View Links

The option to open links within the Facebook app in a browser of your choice is a good feature to have. For a start, it’s clear Facebook isn’t particularly dedicated to making its in-app browser any good any time soon. Also, the less data we’re directly feeding to Facebook, the better, right?

There’s been some strange activity with the option to open links externally in Facebook lately. The feature seemed to have been silently removed in June 2023, before being silently reinstated again.

So who knows if this option is going to stick around. But in the meantime, here’s how to force the Facebook app to use your browser of choice to view links.

What Is an In-App Browser?

In-app browsers are nothing but webpage viewers without all the other functionalities that browsers like Opera, Chrome, and Firefox have built in. The developers of apps like Facebook create these browsers to work only in their app. They cannot open independently, only through their app.

These browsers are used by companies such as Facebook, Twitter, and Gmail to keep you using their app instead of another one. They don’t want you to move out of their app.

Negatives of Facebook’s In-App Browser

Here’s what the Facebook in-app browser looks like. As you can see, it’s pretty feature-thin compared to Chrome and Firefox.

Beyond that, there’s a slew of reasons you might not want to use the in-app browser:

Change the Default Facebook Browser

If you would like to force Facebook to open links in your default browser, here are some steps to make that happen.

Scroll down to Media.

At the very bottom, you should see “Links open externally”. Check this box to enable it.

Now, next time you try to open a web page link through Facebook, you’ll see the below screen, asking you which browser you want to use to open links. You can tap “Always” to always open links in that browser from now on.

Now that you have set Facebook to use the default browser of your choice and not theirs, you will never have to worry again about losing access to a link after closing the app. You’ll be able to use the history in your browser and continue reading.

Samsung Streams Tv To Galaxy S Ii With New Smart View App

Samsung streams TV to Galaxy S II with new Smart View app

Samsung has finally got around to releasing its Smart View app, which allows certain Smart TVs from the company’s range to stream content to its Android phones. Initially available for the Galaxy S II, though with versions for the Galaxy Player, Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab promised for later in the year, Smart View works as both a remote control and as a wireless second screen for broadcast, cable, Blu-ray or any other input going into your TV.

You’ll need a D7000, D8000 or D9500 series smart TV, of course, and it’ll have to be hooked up to the same WiFi network as your GSII is connected to. From there, it’s a case of picking the source from a list – you can have multiple smart TVs on the same network, if you can afford it – and then picking the content you want to watch.

Meanwhile, people watching the TV itself will be able to carry on using it independently. We grabbed some hands-on time with the prototype – you can see the demo in the video below – back in April and found it all worked surprisingly well. Meanwhile, we reviewed Samsung’s 55-inch D8000 recently too, just in case you’re thinking of picking up a new set to accompany your GSII.

Press Release:

Samsung Launches ‘Smart View’ App, Puts Smart TV in the Palm of Your Hand

SEOUL–(Korea Newswire) June 2, 2011 — Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a market leader and award-winning innovator in consumer electronics, today launched the Samsung “Smart View” application that enables users to view images from a Samsung Smart TV or other input device right on their mobile devices.

Available now for the Samsung GALAXY S II, the free Smart View application displays Smart TV images right onto mobile devices via wireless Ethernet-whether consumers are enjoying cable broadcast programs or content from a Blu-ray player, camcorder, set-top box or other input device.

In addition, users can browse any currently installed Smart TV applications from their mobile devices, bringing even more functionality and convenience to the Samsung Apps experience.

Since last April, when Samsung launched “Samsung Remote”-an easy-to-use application to deliver general remote control functions while also supporting Smart TV’s special features-the company has once again strengthened convergence between Smart TV and mobile devices through this latest Smart View app offering.

Samsung has consistently brought movies, TV programs, music and other desired content stored on DLNA-certified devices such as PCs, mobile phones and cameras to the large TV screens-and is now extending this function by mirroring images back to mobile devices through this new application.

The Smart View app for mobile devices also enables mobile viewing from around the home. With only one Smart TV, a family member can watch one TV program in the living room, while another family member enjoys either the same content-or movies played by the living room Blu-ray player-from the comfort of the bedroom while leaning back with a Samsung smart phone or tablet.

“Samsung Smart TV is leading the “smart revolution” not only with the features of Smart TV itself-such as rich content, 2D and 3D picture quality, smart functions and design-but also with input devices using our Qwerty smart remote control, the Samsung Remote app, and now with Smart View,” said Kyungsik Kevin Lee, Vice President, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “The distinctive functionality of Samsung Smart TVs will continue to deliver the most convenient TV watching experience to consumers-enabling them to truly enjoy a smarter life.”

Samsung will continue to update the Samsung Smart View application with various remote control functions, optimally designed for Smart TV, to ensure customers use the unique features of Smart TV in increasingly convenient ways. A “Channel List” option, which lets users search program information and change channels on their mobile devices, will be added going forward.
