Bloomberg reported earlier this week that Apple is working on a new system-wide Dark Mode option for iOS 13 later this year. Dark Mode on the iPhone and iPad has the potential to be extremely popular if implemented well, but what should we expect from Dark Mode on iOS?

Apple already uses dark themes in a few places. Apple Watch has a dark design that relies heavily on true blacks which help the on-screen elements from the OLED panel blend smoothly with the edge of the watch body. Apple TV has a dark appearance setting that primarily changes the look of the Home screen and some apps. This can be toggled with Siri, from the Settings app, or automatically based on local sunset and sunrise times.

Apple brought Dark Mode to the Mac with its macOS Mojave update last year. Dark Mode on the Mac is a system-wide appearance option that changes the look of Apple’s apps and allows third-party apps to participate. Websites with dark themes can even respond to Dark Mode on the Mac as part of Safari 12.1 in macOS 10.14.4 beta.

macOS lets you change between Light and Dark Mode from the System Preferences app, but there’s no scheduling based on time of day, local sunset and sunrise times, or ambient brightness. You’ll need an app like NightOwl if you want more control over Dark Mode on the Mac. The differences between changing appearances on the Apple TV and Mac are weird (and hopefully resolved in a future update).

Since there is no system-wide Dark Mode feature on iOS yet, each iPhone and iPad app has its own method for managing modes — if a dark theme is available at all.

Apple Books includes a variety of theme options designed to improve reading including white, sepia, gray, and black themes. You can leave the black theme on full-time or optionally toggle it on only sometimes with the Auto-Night Theme option.

The night theme in Apple Books is true black on OLED iPhones (X, XS, XS Max) so the black elements don’t light up the screen at all, only the non-black elements.

This extends to other parts of the Apple Books app including the Now Playing screen for audiobooks in Apple Books. But Apple Books is currently an outlier among Apple’s own iOS apps (it also has a really nice landscape Now Playing screen that the Music and Podcasts apps lack). Hopefully it’s also a sign of how iOS 13 might work with Dark Mode.

Apple avoids true black elements on the Mac and instead relies on dark translucent grays to avoid too much contrast and blending floating windows. No Mac today ships with an OLED panel either.

Dark themes for iOS apps often include both true black and dark gray options. Some people find dark gray themes more legible, OLED panels can present a wobbly effect when scrolling non-black content too quickly, and a lot of iOS devices still use LCD panels where true black themes don’t leave the pixels off.

How Dark Mode is activated is also a question. iOS will certainly have a preference option during set up that can later be changed from the Settings app, but apps already use other options for toggling modes today. Many apps today include gestures for switching modes or include an option to switch modes based on screen brightness.

I could see Apple connecting appearances to screen brightness, including a toggle in the screen brightness slider in Control Center, connecting modes to sunset and sunrise, or using ambient brightness to determine which mode is ideal.

Finally, I’m curious how apps that already use a dark theme will respond to changes between Light and Dark Mode. Activity, Watch, Stocks, Trailers, and the Movies and TV Shows tabs of iTunes already use dark themes today. Might these switch to Light Mode when iOS introduces a system-wide appearance toggle?

Ultimately, users would appreciate the option to switch between Light and Dark Mode while also having the option to lock specific apps in either appearance. Apple is currently adding this option on the Mac on an app by app basis, most recently Xcode beta.

At any rate, Dark Mode will likely be well received on iOS 13 if it ships! Dark Mode has long been a highly requested feature for night readers and fans of dark themes alike.

How To Enable Dark Mode On Facebook

Select “Display & Accessibility.”

Turn on “Dark Mode” from there.

Is there Dark Mode for Instagram on PC?

Dark Mode is not baked into Instagram Web. So, you can not just enable Dark Mode from the settings as you would on a smartphone. However, there are some workarounds that you can try to have the same effect. These workarounds include enabling a Flag, using a custom URL, or trying an extension. Open Chrome or Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based) on your computer.

Then, Chrome users should go to chrome://flags and Edge users need to go to edge://flags.

Search “dark” in the search box and hit Enter.

Set the drop-down menu of Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents to Enabled.

How To Fix Dark Mode Not Working Problem

After ages of praying and pleading, Google has finally officially introduced a system-wide Dark theme in Android 10. And as expected, the Dark theme has emerged as one of the standout features of Android 10.

If you are one of the very few people who aren’t aware of the benefits of having a darker theme, the hype can feel a bit overwhelming. But in our humble opinion, it seems to be worth it.

Most users prefer using a darker theme for aesthetic purposes, claiming it allows the app icons to pop up more than lighter alternatives. Having a darker theme, especially in poorly-lit conditions, reduces eye strain. And finally, it has been confirmed by Google that dark mode gives your battery a helping hand, aiding your phone to attain higher screen-on times.

Like every new feature, the Dark theme, too, has encountered a few roadblocks along the way, and in this piece, we’ll try to knock them down for you.

What is Dark mode?

As mentioned earlier, Dark mode is a visual tweak, which turns all your whites into dark greys or black, thus reducing eye strain. We’ve seen its adaptation in apps (Nova Launcher, for example)/system (One UI, for example) over the last couple of years.

Implementing the Dark mode in apps is quite different than system-wide implementation. In apps, developers aren’t usually required to think about erratic interference, as they simply ship off Dark mode as a regular theme.

System-wide implementation — like Google has done in Android 10 — on the other hand, is a lot trickier. Unpredictable behavior, app override, and extensive implementation in all menus and sub-menus across the system make it a really challenging project.

How do you activate Dark mode?

The previous section should have made it abundantly clear that Dark mode implementation is done differently in apps and system. So, it’s obvious that the procedure for turning on Dark mode would also vary.

On Google Pixel or any Android 10-powered smartphone, you’ll find the Dark mode/theme toggle under Display settings. There’s also an option to schedule Dark mode, which would switch your phone to black, automatically, when the clock runs down.

As for apps, it’s hard to pinpoint an exact location for the Dark Mode toggle, but it’s generally found under the themes section. Also, starting with Android 10, many apps would also let you pick “System default” as your theme, making sure your app and system’s themes are always in sync.

Why it may not be working

Despite endless refinement and incremental beta releases, it’s not always possible to hash out inconsistencies, especially not before the update’s gone live in the wild. Dark mode (theme) has been one of Android 10’s standout features, for sure, but many users have been having a hard time getting the feature to work in certain apps.

Pinpointing the exact reason behind these issues is hardly possible, but app developers usually iron out the wrinkles over two, three updates. As Android 10 and 10-based apps are still in their early days, those aren’t exactly as refined as we’d like. We should see some positive changes over the next few months.

How to fix it

Yes, it might be a no-brainer, but it’s not a bad idea to be extra careful and check the theme settings of the apps you’re having trouble with. Be sure to set it to System default (if Dark theme is turned on) or Dark.

If that doesn’t solve the issue, go to the app’s settings, clear cache, and try setting the theme again. Unlucky again? You will probably have to wait for the app developer to address the issue and release a patch.

Make sure you have the latest version installed of the app you are looking to enable the dark mode on. Remember, not all apps have the dark mode right now, but the good news is that most of the popular apps from your popular tech companies now have it. So, the situation is not as bad as it was when Android 10 was launched.

To update an app, open your Play Store app, tap the Hamburger menu button at the top left, tap My apps and games. Here’s you will have the listy of all apps for which an update is available.

Alternatively, simply search for the app on the Play Store, open its listing, and hit the update button is an update is available.

Is Dark mode available for the app?

The most important factor in being able to use dark mode feature is its availability, which differs from app to app as not many apps have the dark mode yet.

If you can’t find the Dark Mode or Theme option in the app’s settings, then it basically means that the Dark Mode is not available for your app at the moment.

How Apple’s Ios Will Dominate Computing

Guessing at a company’s roadmap is always a dangerous venture. In the case of Apple and its iOS family of products, it feels less like predicting a roadmap and more like computing a trajectory.

Apple’s fortunes have shifted from its traditional desktop market (Mac OSX) to its portable device market (iOS.) This began, innocuously, with the iPod and gathered major momentum with the iPhone, iPad and, most recently, the AppleTV.

The AppleTV was the really revealing move: in its first iteration it was based on OSX but in its second iteration it became an iOS product. Apple actually morphed a product from one line into the other. Very telling.

The most interesting piece of the iOS puzzle is the App Store. The App Store seems like little more than a neat way to funnel end user funds into Apple’s ample pockets and, on the surface, it certainly was a huge success in that area.

However, the App Store represents far more than a simple attempt at increasing profit margins. The App Store has brought a paradigm shift to the way that end users acquire, install and manage applications. This shift is nothing new to the technical world of Linux desktop users who have long had simple software acquisition systems (which the App Store mimics). The App Store brings the ease of use of Linux’s package management to the mainstream market and does so with a great revenue model.

The App Store solves the many issues surrounding software purchasing – compatibility, security, etc. – and makes finding new software much easier by offering a central repository. By doing this, Apple’s customers are purchasing software at an incredible pace.

Apple has many reasons to look more favorably upon its iOS product family than its more traditional products. The old Mac lineup is, in reality, just another PC in a commodity market. While OSX has some interesting features compared to Windows, it’s hardly a majorly differentiated product. And with Linux rapidly cutting into the PC market in the netbook and alternative computing device space there is less and less room for OSX to play in.

The iOS devices, running on Apple’s own A4 processor, enable Apple the unique opportunity to engineer their products from the ground up as a completely controlled vertical stack – they control every significant piece of hardware and software, giving them unprecedented control. This control can be leveraged into awesome stability and integration as well as profit. Few outside vendors are getting a piece of the pie.

A fully integrated hardware and operating system stack also gives Apple’s development partners an opportunity to leverage their skills to the fullest. This is analogous to video game console developers knowing that underpowered consoles will often outperform desktop PCs simply because the developers have an opportunity to really tweak the code just for that one, stable device.

iOS offers this in a different environment. Unlike developing for Android or Windows Phones, iOS offers a highly stable and well-known ecosystem for developers to code against – they can leverage more of the platform with less effort.

The power user market is all but lost and Apple quietly bowed out of their long-forgotten server market this past January. This takes Apple to the other side of the spectrum entirely, but one where Apple seems to really understand what’s needed and what their market wants. Rather than being niche, Apple is poised to be a dominant player. There’s no denying that lower power consumption “green” devices will only continue to be important in the future.

In short order, Apple is going to be in a position to control an entire ecosystem: mobile computing platforms, mobile telephony, fixed television-attached media devices and, with only minor effort, desktop computing.

Desktop computing may seem like an odd place for the iOS system to go, but if we really think about what Apple is developing here, it makes perfect sense. The transition won’t be overnight, but it is sure to come.

The first step of the transition is hard to see but it involved the AppleTV. The AppleTV 2.0 is an iOS device that is non-mobile, working its way into peoples’ homes. Currently it’s designed to function purely as a media center device, but all of the iOS functionality is there, dormant. It waits for the day when Apple decides to release an app interface and AppleTV App Store loaded with apps controlled via wireless remote, BlueTooth keyboard.

The only things keeping the AppleTV from becoming a full-fledged iOS-based desktop today is a lack of USB into which to attach keyboard and mouse, and Apple’s reluctance to provide a desktop environment and App Store for the AppleTV. The foundation is there and ready to be activated.

In reality, we are early on in the iOS lifecycle. While the platform that Apple has chosen is very mature for mobile devices it is extremely underpowered for a desktop experience. But each generation brings more computing power to the platform. Soon, a desktop based on a later version Apple processor and iOS may easily exceed the average user’s desktop expectations.

The second step is in the newly added App Store appearing in Mac OSX. The addition of the App Store to the Mac platform means that the beginning of the transition is underway.

The plan, as I see it, with the Mac-platformed App Store, is to begin centralizing critical apps for the Mac ecosystem into the App Store. Over the next two to three years this process is likely to see all major apps move in this direction. Only smaller, less popular apps will be handled through the traditional purchase and install system.

Once a critical mass of apps has been reached and the iOS hardware platform has matured to a point where the speed is adequate for daily desktop computing tasks, Apple will flip the switch and change out the Mac OSX desktop for a new iOS desktop.

This will either be a sister of the AppleTV or, potentially, Apple will simply use the AppleTV device itself encouraging Apple users to see the world of desktop computing and media delivery as one. This vision is not as unlikely as some might think given the combination of the two so common on iOS mobile devices today.

An iOS desktop could be very attractive to home users. Many businesses might be willing to jump at the chance to move to well-polished, low-power consumption devices for their non-power user staff. And those needing more power might look to use them as little more than thin clients.

There are many options around such a low cost device – low cost to purchase and low cost to operate. And with many companies already forced to implement iOS management for their existing iPad and iPhone devices, adding in iOS desktop devices might be a trivial matter.

Apple has conquered many of the hurdles that it faced with Mac OSX for the iOS platform before they’ve even announced plans to make such a desktop device.

The laptop space, where Apple has a strong foothold today, is possibly the easiest platform to migrate. The iPad is almost a full-fledged laptop today. All Apple needs to do is to add a hinge and a keyboard and they’d have a device that works like an iPad but looks like the Macbook Air. An easy transition likely to be heralded by enthusiastic users.

Apple excels at subversive technology. The iPod and iPhone and the iPad, snuck into the market as media players or phones but emerged as highly mobile computing devices used for all sort of tasks, spurred on by the success of social media. But they sneakily did one more thing. In only a few years the iPod Touch went from being a MP3 player and email device to being one of the most popular mobile videogame platforms – making Nintendo shake and basically removing Sony from the sector altogether.

No one bought the iPod Touch with the intent of making it their new, primary videogame device. Yet it happened and the iPod is an excellent video game platform that’s only just beginning to see its own potential. The iPad is following close in its stead.

It is not necessarily that the iOS platforms are the best possible mobile videogame devices. But they are purchased for other purposes and are “good enough” for most of the gaming population. What the Wii wanted to be for consoles, the iPod truly did for mobile gaming.

The AppleTV is now perfectly poised to do the same thing for the console market that the iPod did for mobile gaming.

As more and more game makers focus on the iOS platform it will become increasingly apparent that the AppleTV, sitting already attached to many television monitors all over the world, is a video game console already purchased and ready to go.

What the Wii did in the last generation for the console the AppleTV is ready to do for the next. Nintendo already proved that the largest segment of the video gaming market is primarily casual gamers who are not significantly concerned with having the latest, most powerful platform or the best games.

The AppleTV could provide an even less expensive gaming console with more features than the Wii. It could be far more attractive for developers who can utilize the same resources that they use to make games for all of Apple’s other iOS platforms.

Almost overnight, Apple has made the basis for a video gaming ecosystem that can rival nearly any in existence today. And, of course, in time the AppleTV platform will get more and more powerful. It will catch up to the more expensive video game consoles, making it increasingly eligible as a serious platform contender for hard core console gamers.

Apple has a lot of pokers in the iOS fire but, if executed correctly, the potential is immense.

It will take a few years for Apple to completely phase out the long standing Mac family and users will be resistant, if only for nostalgic reasons. Apple has a few versions of Mac OSX up their sleeves yet, but I believe that the march towards a unified platform under the iOS banner is inevitable.

iOS represents the future, not only for Apple but for much of the industry. It offers lower power consumption, ease of use and a minimum of different parts between many different devices. I, for one, am very excited to see what Apple can do with such a tightly integrated ecosystem. I believe that Apple has more opportunity to do great things with iOS than it ever did with the Mac platform. This could truly be a dawning of great things for Apple and a paradigm shift for end users.

4 checks to perform before trying any fixes:

If you are still unable to use the Fitness app then we recommend you perform the following checks to ensure everything is set up properly on your device. If anything was wrongly configured, you can fix it and then try using the Fitness app again. If a mismatched setting is the cause of your issue then these checks will help you fix it. 

Check #1. Ensure tracking has been enabled

The first thing you should check is permissions for your Watch and device to access your fitness and health data. You can use the guides below to check if the necessary permissions are enabled on your device. 

On Watch:

Open the Watch app and tap on ‘My Watch’ at the bottom. Tap on ‘Privacy’ in the list at the top and enable the following toggles.

On iPhone:

Open the Settings app, tap on ‘Privacy’  and then select ‘Motion & Fitness’. Now enable the following toggles on your device.

If either of the above-mentioned toggles was disabled for you then it is likely the cause of your workout sync issues. You can now try to sync your Fitness data again and it should now be working as intended.

Apple releases hotfixes and patches in the background regularly. Apps are also updated to ensure compatibility with these updates hence we now recommend you ensure that you are running the latest version of iOS 15 on your device as well as the following apps.

Check #3. Turn off Low Power mode

We recommend you turn off Low Power Mode on your device for maximum connectivity and to ensure that your device has permission to sync without worrying about power consumption.

While Low Power mode rarely causes issues with the Fitness app, you could be facing a background conflict with your previous cache or data which could be causing this issue. We recommend you try to sync your workout data with Low Power Mode disabled on your device. 

Check #4. Check your network connection

Lastly, we recommend you check your network connection. If you are facing bandwidth or network issues, then it is likely the reason for issues with your Fitness app. We recommend you connect your device and watch to a working WIFI network and leave them plugged into the wall for a while.

This will allow your devices to use sync and background services to sync your workout data in an idle state. If a network issue was the cause of your problems, then you should now have all your workout data synced across both devices.

7 Fixes for Fitness app issues: Workout data not being recorded, app not working, watch data not syncing, and more

The most common issue for users that have recently updated to iOS 15 or are using iPhone 13s seems to be missing workout data or data from the watch not syncing to their iOS or iPadOS device. We recommend you start with the known fixes and follow the order for each method. It is crucial that you reboot and pair at the correct time during these guides and do not skip them to maximize your chances of solving the issue. 

We are covering below various fixes for the Fitness app but starting the basic ones first.

Fix #1. Re-launch the Fitness app

We recommend you force close Fitness from the multitasking menu and then leave your device idle for a while. You can then try opening and using the app again. A fresh start will help reestablish a link with your Watch which should help record and sync your workout data easily. 

Fix #2. Toggle Airplane Mode

You could also be facing network issues on your iOS device which could be the reason for issues with your Fitness app. In such cases, you can turn on Airplane mode, wait a few minutes and turn it off again.

This will help you refresh your mobile data and WIFI connection which should help solve connectivity errors for you. Your Bluetooth will also be restarted which is what is used to pair with your Apple Watch. A refresh of all your connections should help solve sync and workout recording issues with the Fitness app. 

Fix #3. Restart Apple Watch

Restarting your Apple Watch will help in re-pairing the watch with a fresh connection. A reboot will also help clear your watch’s data cache while prompting sync with your iPhone as soon as paired.  

To restart your Apple Watch, press and hold the Side button until the Power slider appears on the screen. Slide the slider to your right to turn off your watch. We recommend you wait for a few mins before restarting your Watch again.

Press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo to restart your watch. Once your watch restarts, pair it with the concerned device and give the data some time to sync. Workout data should now start syncing between both your devices. 

If your Apple Watch seems to be frozen, you will need to hold down the Crown + Side button simultaneously. Let go of the keys once the Apple logo appears on your watch face. 

Fix #4. Hard Reboot, Re-Pair, and set up your Apple Watch as new

If a Watch reboot did not fix the issue for you then you need to hard reboot your iOS device, remove your Apple watch and Re-pair it as a new device. Let’s start by hard rebooting your iOS device. Use one of the relevant guides below to get you started depending on your device and model. 

For devices with a home button: Press and hold the Power + Home button till you see the Apple logo. Let go of the keys once the logo appears on your screen. 

For devices without a home button: Press and hold the Power + Volume down key instead. Once the Apple logo appears on your screen, let go of the keys and let your device restart. 

Once your device reboots, bring your watch in the vicinity of your device to establish a connection. Now open the Watch app and switch to the ‘My Watch tab’. Select ‘All Watches’ and tap on ‘i’ beside your Watch. Finally, tap and select ‘Unpair Apple Watch’. 

You will be required to now verify your identity. Enter your Apple ID password and the unpairing process should now begin. All your synced and existing data from the Watch will now be removed and it will be reset. Once the Watch resets, you will be at the starting screen of your OOBE. We now recommend you restart your Apple Watch and iOS device for good measure. Once restarted, you can pair your Apple Watch with your iOS or iPadOS device. Fix #5. Factory Reset your devices

If by this time you are unable to fix your issue, then your only option is to reset both your devices. A new iOS update like the current iOS 15 can sometimes cause issues with background services. These services can get bugged or end up not working at all. A hard reboot and re-pair usually help fix this issue, but as this hasn’t worked for you, it’s time to reset both your devices. Use the guide below to reset your devices.

Fix #6. Reset iPadOS 15 or iOS 15 devices

Open the Settings app and tap on ‘General’. Now scroll to the bottom, select ‘Transfer or Reset iPhone’, and tap on ‘Erase all Content and Settings’. Tap on ‘Continue’ and subsequently follow the on-screen instructions to reset your device.

Once the process starts, your device may restart a couple of times which is completely normal. When the process finishes, you will be greeted by the OOBE screen. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your iPhone as a new device without restoring cloud or local backups. You can now reset and pair your Apple Watch using the guide below. 

Fix #7. Reset Apple Watch

There are multiple ways of resetting your Apple Watch. Use the one that best fits your current needs. 

5.1 Reset Watch from the Watch itself

You can reset your Apple Watch whether you remember your Passcode or not. Use the guides below to get you started. 

5.1.1 If you remember your passcode:

Open the Settings app on your Watch and go to General. Now tap and select ‘Reset’. Select ‘Erase All Content and Settings’ and verify your identity by entering your passcode.

5.1.2 If you don’t remember your passcode:

Press and hold down the Side button on your Watch till you see the ‘Power’ slider. With the slider on your screen, press and hold the ‘Digital Crown’ on your Watch.

You will now get a option for ‘Erase All Content and Settings’. Select the same and tap on ‘Reset’. Tap on reset again and your Apple Watch should now reset itsef. Once reset, you can re-pair it with your iOS device again. 

5.2 Reset Apple watch from the Watch app

Open the Apple Watch app on your device and tap on ‘My Watch’. Now tap on ‘i’ beside your watch, select General, and then tap on Reset. Now select ‘Erase Apple Watch Content and Settings’ and follow the on-screen instructions to reset your Watch. 

Once your Watch and device are reset, we recommend you set them up both as new. Once they are both set up you can pair them using the guide above or this guide from Apple. Upon a successful reset and re-pair, your should now be able to use the Fitness app as intended. 

Fix #8. Special Fix for Widget not syncing issue

If you are facing issues with the Fitness widget then this is another known issue being encountered by many users. You can solve this issue by removing the widget from your screen, hard rebooting your iOS device, and re-adding your widget to the screen again.

This should help fix the Fitness widget but in case it does not, you will have to remove and re-pair your Apple Watch. It is vital that you set up your watch as new and do not restore any cloud or local backups. This will help get the Fitness widget, back up and running again on your device.
