Microsoft’s Mbs: Enterprise Applications For Sale?

Did you read in the January Microsoft earnings press release about how well the company’s enterprise applications business is doing?

Neither did I. That’s because there wasn’t a peep about Microsoft Business Solutions in the entire document. It’s as if the home of Axapta, Great Plains, Navision, and Solomon, among others, was no longer part of Microsoft. It’s as if Microsoft might be readying a sale of its misbegotten foray into the land of the enterprise. Which might not be a bad idea for Microsoft, and a welcome boon to its competitors, despite the catastrophic effect it would have on the MBS reseller community.

At a minimum there’s a lot of egg on Redmond’s face about this multibillion-dollar white elephant called MBS. It’s the second-smallest business unit in the family — only mobile devices is smaller — and it’s raking in the biggest losses. At least the losses slowed down a little last year: MBS only dropped $70 million in the second half of 2004, compared to a $193 million loss in the second half of 2003. Revenues are growing, though the year-to-year growth in the last quarter of 2004 was less that one-half of one percent.

Worse than the numbers is the perception. Even PeopleSoft, living under the shadow of the great warrior from Redwood Shores, was able to show respectable revenue numbers in 2004. SAP, of course, cleaned up big time. Lawson didn’t do to bad until the end of the year. SSA Global kept at it. Siebel looks to be staging a minor turnaround. Only MBS looked totally anemic, all the more so because the rest of the business units did so well.

Admittedly, financial trouble wasn’t MBS’ only problem. The Department of Justice vs. Oracle trial saw some very embarrassing testimony on the part of MBS executives and their customers. It seems that some benchmarks were misleading, big customers were left hanging, and partners were unable to meet their obligations. In all the testimony looked more like a bad reality TV show than the confident swagger of a market leader.

Distractions and Confusion

Meanwhile, there’s MBS’ channel problems. The channel has been consumed with mergers and acquisitions, something that we all know can be very distracting. Further distracting the channel is the fact that Microsoft hasn’t really dealt with its channel conflict problem. There’s still too many partners calling on the same prospects with one or more different product lines.

Meanwhile, reports are surfacing that the new version of Axapta will be delayed by a year. This follows the ongoing revision of plans for Project Green, MBS’ rearchitecting of its entire code base. Then there’s the problems with supporting such leading-edge concepts as RFID and lean manufacturing. And there were hints at the last financial analyst meeting that MBS would stop enhancing one or more of its key products. The beat goes on.

At a certain point one begins to feel sorry for the MBS gang. I’m sure they mean well, and I know from my contacts in Denmark that Axapta and Navision are great products. But one really has to wonder how long Microsoft will keep plugging away at something that is clearly outside its core competence. That’s why I keep thinking they’re going to sell the business and get back to their knitting.

I could be wrong; it’s possible that Microsoft’s pain threshold is much higher than I think it is. But at a minimum I expect to see some dramatic changes this year from MBS. Really dramatic. Because muddling through is just not the Microsoft way. And 2004 was a very, very muddled year.

The Easiest Christmas Stocking Tutorial For Non

Sharing is caring!

I’ve been wanting to replace our Christmas stockings and tree skirt for years, but I’ve been too cheap and lazy in the past years.

Luckily, my blog requires that I get stuff done, so it’s happening this year. Best reason to blog ever! Our old stockings were the soft furry kind, but I wanted something more us.

So I decided to make some out of vintage sheets and fabric from my stash. This is a great stash buster, by the way. Today I’m sharing how to sew stockings with a cuff.

* I noticed as I was sewing that I’m not real exact with measurements. I’m pretty comfortable with sewing, so I skip or combine a lot of steps. I also skipped ironing, but it makes sewing much easier. This is probably not a good tutorial if you’re new to sewing. Unless you’re a non-perfectionist, like me. I will throw in some lazy girl tips, though.

Christmas Stocking Tutorial Supplies Needed Christmas Stocking Tutorial: Stocking Body

Gather your fabric*. It should be fabric that you could marry if you could. So you know that fabric that you’ve been hoarding? Use it. I chose a combination of vintage sheets and fabric from my stash. I knew that I wanted the main colors to be pink, aqua, green and red, so I used that as a starting point. Gather your pretty trim too. I used pom pom trim, ribbon, rick rack, and ruffle trim, both store bought and homemade. You don’t have to use crazy patterns and colors like I did. You can choose solids and even omit the trim. That’s the best part of DIY: making it exactly how you want it.

Use an old stocking for a pattern. I folded fabric and cut around our old stockings. Trace it before cutting if it makes you feel better. Just make sure your fabric is folded so that you get 2. Do this again for the inside lining. I used plain colored vintage sheets for this part.

Sew around the edges, leaving the top open. Go slow around the curves if you need to. (Lazy girl tip: The presser foot also doubles as a seam allowance gauge. It’s really close to 1/4″ and that’s all you need.) The floral is the outside and the pink is the lining.

Clip the curved parts. (Lazy girl tip: I just snip, being careful not to clip the seams. It’s not always necessary to clip notches.) Iron it at this point if you want. I obviously didn’t….

Flip the outer fabric inside out. Leave the lining as it is and put it inside the stocking. The wrong sides of the fabric should be together.

Make the stocking loop. Cut a piece of fabric that’s about 7″ x 3″. Fold the edges to the inside and top stitch around the edge. (lazy girl tip: You can iron it to make it easier, but I find it easier to just fold it and sew it. Sewing it flattens it out.)

How to Sew the Cuff for the Stocking

Make the cuff. Using the stocking as a guide, cut a piece of fabric a little longer than needed to wrap around the top of the stocking. This piece was about 8″ high. You want it to be high enough to fold under and sew.

Sew the edge under. Once again, ironing makes this step easier. I just folded it under and then folded it again before sewing.

Add trim to the cuff now. It’s easier to add trim now. I chose a gingham ruffle trim. Picking out trim was the best part!

Fit the cuff around the stocking. Pin if needed to find the precise measurement. Leave space where the ends meet to sew the edges together. Pin it where the edges meet and sew the cuff into a loop.

Pin the cuff to the stocking. Fold the stocking layers in toward each other. Place the cuff in between this stocking sandwich. This will give the stocking a nice finish with all of the seams on the inside. Be sure to pin the stocking loop on the same side as the heel!

Sew the cuff to the stocking. This will be a top stitch, so you can match the thread color or add more trim here if you would like!

Admire and repeat as many times as needed! The whole process went pretty fast and I was able to get 4 done in a few hours. Although, much of that time went into making fabric decisions.

I’ve since ironed them and they look a lot better.  I’m so in love with these stockings. I can’t believe that it’s taken me so long to make my own! Making stockings was actually pretty simple. I hope you enjoyed my Christmas stocking tutorial!

13 Killer Chrome Apps To Replace Your Desktop Software

Presentations: SlideRocket, Google Drive, and Prezi

Presentations are almost synonymous with slides, but they really don’t have to be: If you’re trying something new by leaving PowerPoint behind, why not leave the very concept of slides behind? Prezi lets you do just that by treating your presentation as a large canvas, rather than as a collection of separate slides. As the presentation plays, it pans across the canvas, zooming in and out at your command. Done well, a Prezi presentation can feel more cohesive than a PowerPoint one; when you’re finished watching it, you feel as though you got a true bird’s-eye view of the subject in question.

If you want to go the Google route, Google Drive includes a Presentation tool. It isn’t Flash-based, and it includes an interesting Research sidebar that lets you quickly pull in images and other data from the Web. If you start a new slide and suddenly think, “A quote about happiness would go great here,” Google’s Presentation tool makes finding, attributing, and inserting such a quote into your presentation trivially easy.

Image editing: Pixlr, PicMonkey, and BeFunky

The undisputed king of desktop image editing is, of course, Photoshop. But these days, even Photoshop has an online version, called Photoshop Express. It is a far cry from the desktop version in terms of power, but it can help you get the basics done. That said, Photoshop Express doesn’t offer a handy Chrome extension—not even one that acts as a quick link to the app. That shouldn’t stop you from trying it out (it’s free), but let’s look at two options that do come with Chrome extensions: Pixlr and PicMonkey.

Pixlr feels like a miniature version of Photoshop, with multiple tool dialog boxes, a history list, a modal Levels dialog box, layers, and more.

Pixlr’s Chrome extension is little more than a shortcut to the Web service (like the Google Drive extension), but this free Flash-based editor from Autodesk is both powerful and friendly. You can quickly load images from your computer, create new layers, adjust levels, apply effects, and use traditional tools such as dodge, burn, blur, and more. Pixlr even has a wand selection tool, as well as a history panel with a log of operations you can undo, just as in Photoshop. For all of its sophistication, however, you must remember that Pixlr is still Flash-based—in other words, save often, because it may occasionally freeze or crash. While using Pixlr with a stable version of Chrome and its built-in Flash plug-in, I encountered one crash that erased all of my work.

If Photoshop-like image editing isn’t your thing, PicMonkey can help with Instagram-style filters and a friendly user interface.

For better or for worse, Pixlr feels like a traditional image editor. If you’re looking for something more along the lines of what you can do with Instagram on your phone, you should check out PicMonkey. This image editor couldn’t be simpler to use: Just load your image, and start selecting edits from the sidebar. The sidebar is divided into groups, beginning with basic functions such as cropping and exposure, and then moving on to creative color effects similar to those in Picasa (Focal B&W, Lomo). It includes a text tool with lots of fonts (ideal for creating meme-style images), as well as several framing options and different textures you can apply to your photo.

Another fun and simple photo editor is BeFunky. It’s not all that different from PicMonkey: You get a sidebar with tools subdivided into “Effects,” which can be subtle, and “Artsy,” which are more heavy-handed, transforming your photo into a watercolor image or something out of a comic. BeFunky’s layout feels a bit haphazard at times, and it lacks PicMonkey’s polished fit and finish, but it is certainly usable. What’s nice about combining both tools is that if you can’t find the exact tool you need on PicMonkey, you might find it on BeFunky. If you just want to have some fun with a picture without learning to use Photoshop (or something like Photoshop), PicMonkey and BeFunky are both great options.

The Take-Home Message

Because most of us don’t work in a vacuum, the biggest question in making such a gradual transition turns out to be other people: Is online collaboration important to you and your coworkers? Would your colleagues be happy to accept links to Google Docs rather than email attachments? Would your organization be okay with you switching to a different email platform? If you can answer “yes” to those questions, your path to using browser-based apps will be a smooth one.
