Instagram is adding two new feeds to the app, and updating the existing home feed with more content from accounts you don’t already follow.

To counterbalance the additional content you didn’t opt-in to seeing, Instagram is bringing back the chronological feed which only contains content from followed accounts.

The other feed Instagram is introducing is similar to Twitter’s lists, in that it allows you to curate the accounts you want to see content from.

Here are more details about the updates coming to Instagram, which are said to give users more control over their experience.

Updates To Instagram’s Home Feed

In an update that’s confirmed to be rolling out soon, and is already available in testing for select users, the Instagram app is going to contain three types of feeds.

The three feeds include:

Home: This is the Instagram experience you know today where content is ranked algorithmically based on how interested you’re likely to be in specific posts.

Favorites: This feed contains content from accounts that you want to make sure you don’t miss things from. You can choose which accounts appear in this feed, kind of like Twitter lists.

Following: This is a chronological list of posts just from accounts you follow.

In a video published by Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri, the two new feeds are previewed and details are shared regarding changes to the existing home feed.

Mosseri says these changes are being made in an effort to help people feel good about the time they spend in the app.

He believes giving people ways to customize their Instagram feed can create a more positive experience.

At the same time, however, the main feed is going to stray further away from the content people have opted into.

This is stated while Mosseri is describing the new ‘Following’ feed. He says (emphasis mine):

“… The third we’re calling ‘Following’ — and it’ll be a chronological list of posts just from accounts you follow, because Home is going to have more and more recommendations over time.”

That’s good news when it comes to content discovery, as it creates the potential for accounts to get in front of more people and build an audience.

Though it could lead to a worse experience if people suddenly find they’re not getting enough of the content they want to see when they open the Instagram app.

At least they’ll be able to quickly switch over to either the Favorites or Following feeds from an easily accessible drop down menu.

As mentioned, these are already available in testing for some users. Mosseri says he hopes the full experience will launch in the first half of this year.

Let’s face it. Instagram is only fun if other people are following you. However, when most of us first sign up for Instagram, hardly anyone is following us. In this article you’re going to learn some simple and ethical techniques to build a following on Instagram.

There’s a lot of demand for Instagram followers, and different scams and spammy techniques have been created as a consequence. Needless to say, these techniques don’t work (and Instagram will likely delete your account if you use them), so this article only focuses on legitimate ways to get more Instagram followers…

1. Understand why you want more Instagram followers

Before you start using the techniques described in this post, take a second to think about why you need more followers. Is it because Instagram is boring when nobody is following you? Is it because you want to get exposure and feedback for your photography? Do you want to use Instagram to promote your business?

All of the above are legitimate reasons to build an audience on Instagram, but I don’t think it’s a good idea to gain more followers to boost one’s ego or street cred. You should only keep reading if you have a good reason to build a following on Instagram.

2. Pick a focus for your Instagram profile

Your profile needs to have a clear focus if you want to be successful on Instagram. If your goal is to showcase photography, don’t post photos of food or drinking with friends (or even worse – screenshots). Your target audience only wants to see great photography!

If you use Instagram to stay in touch with friends, it’s OK to post whatever you like, but the chances are that people who don’t know you won’t be interested in following you. Why would people who don’t know you want to see what you had for lunch today?

For a business I recommend posting awesome photos that people in your industry want to see (like beautiful beaches if you’re a travel agency) while occasionally giving people a behind-the-scenes look into your company to build a more personal relationship.

3. Write a personal description 4. Make your Instagram feed awesome

Your last 30 photos should always look awesome, because when people make a decision whether to follow you, they look at your latest photos to get an idea of what they can expect from you in the future. If there are photos they don’t like, they won’t follow you.

It goes without saying that quality is more important than quantity. Delete your bad photos if you have to. Build a portfolio of at least 20 great photos if you’re just starting out. The following techniques will only work if your Instagram feed looks awesome.

5. Use hashtags to find potential followers

In order to get more followers, you have to get in front of the right people, and the easiest way to do that is through hashtags. If you’re a landscape photographer, search for other landscape photographers using hashtags such as #landscape. If you have a golf brand, look for people who play golf using hashtags such as #golf.

6. Reach out to potential followers

Liking is the by far the quickest out of the three, but it only works for users who don’t get many likes. People with many followers are used to getting likes all the time, so they no longer pay attention to them. If a photo has more than ten likes already, only the total number of likes is displayed and probably no one will notice your like.

Following someone and also liking their photos is more likely to get their attention, but you can only follow a limited number of people within an hour and in total. I would only recommend following people whose photos you actually want to see in your feed. If you just start following everyone, your Instagram feed will quickly become useless.

8. Do not post many photos at once

Once you get some new followers, it’s important that you keep them. The easiest way to lose a follower is to post many photos at once, which makes them a lot more prominent in your followers’ feeds. If they don’t like one of your photos, they probably won’t bother to unfollow you. But if you post too many photos at once, they might…

9. Don’t hashtag spam

Some people try to tag their photos with every possible hashtag – especially the popular ones – hoping to get more exposure. From my experience Instagram gives you the same amount of hashtag exposure no matter how many you include. Of course, a long list of irrelevant hashtags in the description of your photo just looks really bad, and your followers don’t want to see that. Your can use some relevant hashtags, but don’t be spammy.

10. Stay away from scams and spam

Some people go crazy about getting more Instagram followers, and different scams and spammy techniques have developed as a consequence. Forget about buying followers, begging for shoutouts, trading likes for follows, and so on. None of that works.

11. Engage with your audience

There are a few simple things you can do to keep your audience engaged. First, you should post regularly – at least a few times each week so that people don’t forget who you are. Try to add an interesting description to your photos whenever possible.

As you can see there are legitimate ways to build a following on Instagram, but they take some work and dedication. At the end of the day, people will only follow you if your feed looks great, and how many new followers you get depends on how many people check out your Instagram profile.

Before people can follow you on Instagram, they have to find you. But not all text on Instagram is searchable. Only two fields on Instagram contribute to search results: name and username.

Your username is your Instagram handle. It should be consistent with the handle you use on other social networks since this also makes it easier for people to find you. Use your brand name or a variation of your name that people are likely to use when searching for your brand.

Your name can be anything you like, up to 30 characters. You don’t want to keyword-stuff, but including your most relevant keyword in the name field can make you easier to find.

For example, travel writer Claudia Laroye (@itsclaudiatravels) includes the keyphrase “travel writer” in her Instagram name. Now, she’s more likely to be found by people looking for travel content or writers.

Use emoji. Emoji add a bit of variety and can make your caption more enticing. Just make sure you use those emoji correctly!

Try different caption lengths. Our data shows that long captions are more likely to improve engagement, but ultra-short captions can also be very effective when the visuals speak for themselves.

Will Tang of Going Awesome Places posts great photos with detailed captions that tell the story behind the shot. His Insta bio calls him a “creator of ridiculously detailed itineraries and guides.” That means this caption approach is very on-brand.

Post content that’s meant to be re-shared

Your audience wants to engage with content that’s useful and inspiring. So when planning your posts, think about types of content that other people might like to share.

People love sharing infographics. Feed that desire by supplying your followers with your expert insights. If someone embeds your Instagram posts in their blog, you’re exposed to a whole new audience of potential followers.

Embrace Instagram Stories

If you want more Instagram followers, you need to use Instagram Stories. Half a billion Instagram accounts use Stories every day, and 45% of the most-viewed Stories are from businesses.

People who use Stories are highly engaged. Plus, you can use the hashtag and location features in your stories to expose them to people who do not already follow you.

Make the most of Stories highlights

Put a lot of effort into an Instagram Story and not quite ready to say goodbye after 24 hours? Pinned Stories highlights are a great way to introduce your brand to people who visit your profile. So pack those highlights with great info and content to show new visitors why they should follow you.

When users interact with your posts, those engagements tell Instagram’s algorithm that your content is valuable. Those interactions will then boost your reach. So giving your existing followers something great to interact with can help bring in new Instagram followers.

How often should you post? According to our analysis, between 3-7 times per week.

Post at the right time

Instagram uses an algorithm, not a chronological feed. But timing is still important to the algorithm.

Hootsuite’s social team found that the best time to post on Instagram is between 8 AM -12 PM PST or 4-5 PM PST on weekdays.

But your audience might have different habits than ours. A tool like Hootsuite Analytics can show you the best time to post for your audience based on past engagement, impressions or traffic.

What if the best time to post to your account is 3 AM? (Hey, it happens.) Use a desktop-based Instagram tool like Hootsuite to schedule and publish directly to Instagram.

You can also use Hootsuite to schedule Instagram Stories and Reels.

Step 3. Make yourself findable

Use relevant hashtags to reach new users

Sadly, the text of your Instagram posts isn’t searchable. But your hashtags are. Using hashtags thoughtfully can be a good way to get followers on Instagram for free. You can even create your own branded hashtags.

Relevant hashtags can help people find your content. Instagram users can even follow hashtags. That means your hashtagged content may appear in the feeds of people who do not yet follow your account.

You can include up to 30 hashtags in an Instagram post, but don’t go overboard. Instead, do some experimenting to learn how many hashtags work best for your particular account.

Avoid hashtag gimmicks such as #likeforlike, #tagsforlikes, or #followme. These may give you a temporary boost in followers. But those people aren’t interested in what makes you and your content special. They’re not going to help you build a meaningful, engaged audience on Instagram.

Tag your location

If the location of your post or Story is clear, it’s worth adding a location tag. It’s another easy way for people to find your content on Instagram.

If you’re posting from a conference or event, adding your location can help you connect with other attendees. This will expose your account to a highly relevant group of new potential Instagram followers.

Tag relevant users

It’s easy to tag Instagram users featured in your photos. Just use an @-mention in your caption or Instagram’s tagging functionality within the post.

Users are notified when they’re tagged, so tags encourage them to engage with and share the post. Your post will also appear on the Tagged tab of their Instagram profile.

Be careful, though. Tagging someone just to get their attention isn’t a great idea. Instead, only tag users featured in your photo or relevant to your post’s content.

Your Instagram profile should be easily discoverable. If you’ve already built a following on another social network, let those fans know about your Instagram account.

Share a link to your Instagram profile and give your existing social followers a reason to check it out. (Like an Instagram-exclusive coupon code, event, or contest.)

When BlogHer hosted Jameela Jamil for an Instagram Live, they made sure to promote it on their Facebook Page as well.

If you’re just starting your Instagram account, make sure to post some content before you promote the account elsewhere. Aim for a minimum of 12 posts.

Embed Instagram posts in your blog

Embedding your own Instagram posts in your blog is an easy way to share your content and drive traffic to your profile. Every new visitor to your Instagram profile is a potential new follower.

For example, say Hootsuite wanted to announce our mascot’s makeover. Sure, we could share a few pictures of Owly’s new look.

Share your Instagram account in other communications

Think beyond your social channels when sharing your Instagram account.

You can link to your Instagram account on your website, in your email signature, and in your online newsletters. The link doesn’t have to be big, either. You can use a small Instagram icon.

If you’re promoting a new Instagram account, a quick email blast is a great way to get free Instagram followers fast.

And don’t forget about your offline materials. You can include your Instagram handle on coasters, posters, packing slips, business cards, or packaging. It’s a simple way to drive more free Instagram followers to your account.

Use Instagram QR codes

Your Instagram QR code is a scannable code that allows other Instagram users to follow you instantly. It’s another easy way to promote your account on physical materials like packing slips, signage, and product packaging.

Step 4. Engage with your community

Follow relevant accounts

You should only tag people in an Instagram post when the content is directly relevant to them. But you can follow anyone you like. And when you follow a user on Instagram, there’s a good chance they will check out your feed and consider following you back.

Social listening is great for finding conversations and influential users (a.k.a. influencers) to follow.

Instagram’s “Suggestions For You” section is also a handy resource for finding relevant accounts to follow. These suggestions show up in your Instagram feed between posts, in between Stories, or on the right side of the screen on a computer.

Just remember not to follow too many other accounts too fast. Your follower ratio, or the number of people who follow you compared to how many you follow, is important for credibility.

What You Do When You Don’t Know…?


As a culture, I find we’re OBSESSED with quiz shows. Why? It’s a simple answer: we love to test our knowledge. We put value on intelligence. It becomes a literal competition to see who is the smartest. You can look beyond quiz shows and look at any standardized tests as further evidence of that. As much as I appreciate smart people, I’ve come to realize that the true test is not what you know, it’s what you do when you don’t know.

It’s how you overcome obstacles..that’s the real test of the mind. It’s easy to look at someone we think is smarter than us and feel inferior. The reality is none of us are born with any knowledge. It must be learned and attained throughout life. As writer David Foster Wallace said, “I have come gradually to understand that the liberal arts cliché about teaching you how to think is actually shorthand for a much deeper, more serious idea: learning how to think really means learning how to exercise some control over how and what you think.” That’s right. We must learn how to think in order to learn because if we don’t, we’ll forever feel overwhelmed by any subject – simple or complex.

Let me posit it to you this way – how many friends or family members do you have that try their hand at something, rave about it, only to weeks or months later push it out of their lives completely. When asked, their explanation may be the infamous: “it wasn’t for me”.

Here’s a concrete example: I know plenty of people who start tennis, love it and see themselves become better and better. Then they hit a plateau. They can’t overcome it and thus stop playing tennis. The initial incline is evident in all areas both physical and mental. Those who quit as soon as they reach the first dilination from this upward trajectory are referred to as dabblers. They try their hand at it only so far as it provides reward for their efforts.

Here’s a reality check: in all disciplines of life, there will be plateaus to overcome. This is exactly where the notion of what you do when you don’t know comes in. What will you do when you stop improving? What happens when you stop seeing results? What will you do when the going gets tough? What will you do when you simply just don’t know?

The reason why many scrap activities, goals and projects altogether is because it’s far easier to quit. Quitting is the default action most people take unfortunately, and it’s rather sad. Often, you’ll hear people refer to someone as quitting on their dreams. And that’s exactly what it is most often.

But there are several strategies beyond giving up: mentors, books, online videos or articles, classes, groups…you get the picture. Usually, the harder the problem, the more you’ll have to employ a combination of those. Your ability to figure out what to do when you don’t know will impact how fast you’ll be able to work through those roadblocks. If you research solutions to similar problems of the past, discuss it with people deemed experts within those arenas, you can chip away at the problem. Just never give up – It’s not easy, but It’s that simple!

However, the real challenge is often that even those who overcome these hurdles are surprised by such hurdles whenever they come up along the way. If we look at a chart, we classified the first type of person as a dabbler, quitting at the first obstacle. The people who overcome these hardships but don’t see them coming, will eventually be decimated by their inability to foresee such roadblocks. With each breakthrough, they lose a certain amount of passion and energy because of the effort required in overcoming it.

In a way, it’s a combination of perseverance and patience.

So next time you watch or meet someone who knows a lot, rather than be intimidated, learn from them. If you don’t know something they know, it’s okay. Ask for clarity. Ask them to explain. People may try to judge you or demean you for the things you don’t know. Don’t give in to those taunts. You know things they don’t know.

Understand, I do value knowledge. But as you go through life, let your thirst for knowledge be a driving force, not a goal. Study your passions and execute them to the best of your abilities, and as time goes by, continue to get better because of what you’ve learned along the way.

As a start, focus on identifying how you learn best: is it visually, kinetically, or auditorily. This will help yield results faster as each of us have different ways we learn. Happy learning.

Pinterest Updates Algorithm To Surface More Content Types

Pinterest is introducing a new ranking model to its home feed in an effort to surface certain types of content more often.

While that model is effective at maximizing user engagement, it’s not the best model for surfacing a variety of content types.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean they wouldn’t engage with video content if it were to be surfaced.

Pinterest found itself with a problem of wanting to boost more content types while still keeping content recommendations relevant.

To solve this problem, Pinterest is introducing a real-time ranking system for its home feed called “controllable distribution.”

Controllable Distribution

Pinterest describes controllable distribution as a “flexible real-time system.”

It’s not a complete algorithm overhaul. Rather, controllable distribution is only applied after the traditional home feed ranking algorithm.

Controllable distribution makes it possible to specify a target for how many impressions a certain content type should receive.

For example, controllable distribution could be used to specify that 4% of users’ home feeds should contain video content.

This is done through a system that tracks what percentage of the feed was video in the past. Then, the system boosts or demotes content according to how close that percentage is to the specified target.

Pinterest says this can be accomplished while still respecting users’ content preferences.

What Does This Mean for Marketers?

As a real-time system, the controllable distribution model will be continuously adjusted.

On one hand, that means the home feed won’t get stale for users.

On the other hand, it’s not exactly possible to optimize for an algorithm that changes in realtime.

Pinterest is diversifying the types of content in the home feed. If you want more opportunities to show up in peoples’ feeds then diversify the types of content you publish.

For example, if you only publish photos, then consider adding some videos or GIFs to the mix. Maybe some product pins if you’re an e-commerce retailer.

Pinterest’s target for displaying certain types content will be changing all the time.

Publishing a wide variety of content will help ensure you have the right type of content available at the time Pinterest wants to display it.
