Suggested January 2024 Iphone 8 Success Depends On How Well Apple Responds To China Challenges, Say Analysts

The success of the iPhone 8 largely depends on how well Apple responds to the challenges it faces in China, say analysts. China is the world’s largest smartphone market, and for iPhone sales is second only to Apple’s home market of the USA.

Those challenges are significant ones. Greater China – which includes Hong Kong and Taiwan – is the only market where Apple saw a sales decline in the first half of the year. Revenue was down 13%, twice the drop it experienced in the previous year. Market share is now below 10%, from its peak of 13%.

Apple’s biggest challenge in China can be summed-up in one word …

More than a messaging service and social network app, it’s effectively an entire ecosystem. Instead of downloading individual apps, many Chinese people do pretty much everything inside WeChat – including mobile payments. As a WSJ piece notes.

Fans use WeChat to pay for food, hail cabs, stream videos and more […]

When Wang Tingting, a Shanghai sales assistant, ditched her iPhone 5 last year for a Huawei P9 Plus, she noticed little difference: Both phones run WeChat , the app she and millions of other Chinese consumers use the most. “I don’t miss the iPhone at all,” said Ms. Wang, 24 years old […]

Ren Yanmei, 56, of Zhengzhou, recently switched from an iPhone to a Xiaomi phone, using it to read news, send texts and chat by video with her daughter. “If a phone has WeChat, I don’t care about the brand,” she says.

When WeChat handles everything people do on a daily basis, the choice of phone platform becomes relatively unimportant.

But Apple is responding. The launch of gold-colored devices was in large part driven by the Chinese market, and Apple is tailoring its software as well as hardware to Chinese tastes. It’s not coincidence, for example, that the Camera app in iOS 11 can natively read QR codes. While they may be relatively unimportant in most countries, they are used everywhere in China thanks to support by, you guessed it, WeChat.

Apple has also tried to maintain good relationships with Chinese authorities, even when it means doing some distasteful things, like blocking access to news apps , ‘tightening checks‘ on live-streaming apps and – just this weekend – removing VPN apps from the App Store.

Perhaps most importantly of all, it has appointed its first ever VP and managing director of Greater China, Isabel Ge Mahe. She has been heavily involved in developing features geared specifically to the Chinese market, and the seniority of the role signals that Apple fully understands the vital importance of this work.

One analyst has wondered whether even this will be enough.

Tailoring software for the market could be critical to keeping the iPhone competitive. Otherwise, analyst Ben Thompson wrote, Apple runs the risk that the phone’s appearance becomes the only thing that matters when Chinese consumers buy a new device.

Such a shift potentially would force Apple to overhaul its entire business model, moving to a system where it releases a new-looking phone annually rather than every other year.

It seems highly unlikely Apple would go quite that far, but there’s no denying that Chinese sales of the iPhone 8 will be a clear test of how well the company has responded to the unique challenges presented by this huge market.

Galaxy Note 4 Won’t Turn Around Samsung’s Ailing Fortunes, Analysts Say

Samsung Electronics is expected to launch soon the Galaxy Note 4, in a bid to help improve its ailing fortunes in the high-end segment of the smartphone market. But the company’s problems run deeper with local vendors eating its lunch with cheaper devices in countries like China and India.

The launch comes after a second quarter that was catastrophic for Samsung. The company may still be the largest smartphone vendor in the world, but its market share dropped from 32.6 percent to 25.2 percent. And while overall sales grew by almost 27 percent, Samsung’s shipments dropped by 1.5 million units to 74.5 million smartphones, according to Strategy Analytics.

The Note family has become very important to Samsung, but something more is needed to give the company a real boost.

Samsung needs a spark

“I think Samsung is in a holding pattern at the moment. Any new device launch at this stage is really focused on stabilizing rather than regrowing its device business. For Samsung to revitalize its sales the company needs a revolutionary design, something like a foldable or bendable screen to shake up the market,” said Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics.

The Galaxy Note 4 is likely to be more of an evolution of the existing Note 3 model. Rumored specifications include a 5.7-inch screen with a 2560 by 1440 pixel resolution and Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 805 processor.

Even if the Galaxy Note 4 is an incremental update under the hood, Samsung has to show it has learned from the “Galaxy S5 debacle,” according to Neil Shah, research director at Counterpoint Technology Market Research.

“I hope the Note 4 will have all those factors missing from the S5. For example, a premium design with a new design language that includes some metal instead of the plastic design of its existing products. If you look at the Note 2 and 3, and the Galaxy S4 and S5 from the front they all look the same,” said Shah.

To turn around its fortunes, Samsung also has to woo consumers in countries such as China and India with an improved portfolio of low-cost smartphones. As sales in Western countries have stalled, emerging markets have taken over as growth engines.

In both China and India, Samsung’s smartphone sales are suffering at the hands of local companies.

“Consumers buying smartphones from local brands have been a trend from the last four or five years, and is snowballing at the moment,” Mawston said.

In China, Xiaomi was either neck and neck with Samsung or on top during the second quarter depending upon whom you believe. In India, Micromax has already surpassed Samsung’s overall phone sales and is catching up on smartphones.

Too many products?

“The prices are almost 30 to 40 percent higher than what Chinese and Indian brands would charge for smartphones with similar specifications,” Shah said.

There are several reasons for the progress companies like Xiaomi and Micromax have made. One is the growing availability of so-called reference platforms or designs. Even Google is getting involved with Android One, a program designed to help vendors build high-quality smartphones priced under US$100. The first products will come from Micromax and other Indian smartphone manufacturers such as Karbonn Mobiles and Spice this fall.

What the reference platforms have done is lower the bar for developing smartphones by providing the components and resources that manufacturers need to quickly and cheaply put out devices. So even vendors that lack the huge research and development departments found at Apple or Samsung can still offer competitive products.

How To Set Up Emergency Medical Id On Iphone And Apple Watch

Everyone should know how to set up the emergency Medical ID on iPhone as it can potentially save your life. This feature stores essential health information about you that first responders and others can use during emergencies such as an accident.

It includes your emergency contacts and can be viewed even when your phone is locked. Further, it can be linked to your Apple Watch too. Here’s everything you need to know to create and share your Medical ID on your iPhone and Apple Watch. Let’s start with the basics.

What is Medical ID on iPhone?

Your Medical ID on the iPhone or Apple Watch stores medical details about you that can be useful in emergencies. The details include:

Name, date of birth, and Apple ID photo

Medical conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, or asthma

Medications you are currently on

Medical notes such as if you have a pacemaker in your heart

Allergies and reactions

Blood type

Organ donor status

Height and weight

Primary language

Emergency contacts and their phone numbers

How to create an emergency Medical ID on iPhone

Open the Health app and stay on the Summary tab.

If you have previously set up a Medical ID and want to update it, tap Edit in the upper-right corner.

Enter the relevant information like your date of birth, allergies, blood type, etc.

To make your Medical ID available from your iPhone Lock screen, toggle on Show When Locked. This can enable others to see it during an emergency.

Note: If you’re in the United States, you can also turn on Share During Emergency Call. This will share your Medical ID with emergency responders through Emergency SOS.

How to set up Medical ID on an Apple Watch

After setting up your Medical ID on your iPhone, it’s essential to add it to your Apple Watch if you use one. Many first responders are trained to look for medical bracelets when attending to patients in an emergency.

This means your Apple Watch is more likely to be checked in an emergency than your iPhone. So, follow these steps to add your Medical ID to Apple Watch.

Open the Watch app on your iPhone

Go to My Watch → Health → Medical ID.

Make sure all the details are accurate and enable the option to Show When Locked.

Along with your Medical ID, it’s vital to set up emergency contacts on your iPhone. They will be notified when using the Emergency SOS on your iPhone or Apple Watch. Here’s how to add or edit your emergency contacts:

Open iPhone’s Health app and go to the Summary tab.

Tap your profile photo at the top-right and select Medical ID.

Tap Add Emergency Contact.

To delete an emergency contact, tap the red minus symbol.

You can access medical ID from the lock screen of an iPhone or Apple Watch, provided that the Show When Locked feature was enabled when setting it up. Let’s see how to view it.

How to view someone’s Medical ID

On iPhone

When iPhone is locked:

At the bottom left, tap Emergency → Medical ID.

If the iPhone is unlocked:

Open the Health app → tap the profile picture → tap Medical ID.

If you need to call emergency services, hold down the Side button with either Volume button, then slide across on the Emergency SOS option. Or repeatedly press the Side button or the Sleep/Wake button five times.

This activates Emergency SOS and will call the emergency services in your country.

When you complete the call, the iPhone will send a message to emergency contacts and show the Medical ID.

On Apple Watch

Long-press the Side button, then slide over the Medical ID option.

To call emergency services, long-press the Side button, and slide across the Emergency SOS option.

This will make a call to the emergency services in your country. If your Apple Watch does not have a cellular plan, it must be close to a paired iPhone for this function to work.

After the emergency call, the Apple Watch will alert each emergency contact and displays the Medical ID.

How To Overcome The Challenges Of Starting A Business

There are many excellent reasons to start a business, including working for yourself, earning more money, having a flexible work schedule and expanding your skill set. However, like all worthwhile endeavors, starting and building a new business is challenging.

If you’re passionate about your business idea, don’t let inevitable entrepreneurial pain points keep you from following through and making your business ownership dream a reality. As most small business owners will tell you, the risks and challenges are usually worth the rewards.

Did You Know?

About half of all entrepreneurs start a business from home, which requires organization, the right mindset and careful marketing.

The biggest challenges of starting a business

Consider the following four challenges most entrepreneurs face when starting a business and start thinking about how you’ll overcome them.

1. Running the show alone is a business ownership challenge.

New business owners wear many hats as they get their operations up and running, often handling sales, marketing, accounting, information technology (IT) and more. However, they likely don’t excel in all areas and may end up feeling overwhelmed.

Entrepreneurs often find themselves moving from task to task, putting out fires with one hand while completing everyday tasks with the other. As experienced business owners know, handling everything for too long is bad for your mental and physical health and can take a toll on business productivity.

How to overcome the challenges of running the operation alone

Be honest about your strengths and weaknesses and understand that your time is precious when running a business. While you can certainly embrace professional growth and learn more, sharing the load is key.

Editor’s note: Looking for the right loan for your business? Fill out the below questionnaire to have our vendor partners contact you about your needs.

Here are some tips for handling the myriad tasks required when running a business:

Look for outside help: Seek help in the areas where you struggle. For example, hire a virtual assistant, use a marketing agency or find an IT partner. Hire full-time and part-time employees as you grow to lighten your load.

Utilize Small Business Association (SBA) resources: Explore the SBA’s Office of Small Business Development Centers. This SBA program provides one-stop assistance to current and prospective small business owners, with experts in local offices throughout the United States. sharing information on handling many aspects of running a business.

Get organized: To combat feeling overwhelmed, make your business more organized. Write down and define your daily tasks and goals. Once you’ve identified your tasks, list them in order of priority and cluster-related tasks. Prioritizing helps you determine which tasks and goals to tackle at the most productive time of your day. Organizing and clustering help you handle similar tasks in the same period instead of sporadically.

Keep your workspace neat and use the best document management software to store and organize your files.

Check out community resources for funding. Cities and regions may offer business initiatives to help small businesses empower their communities.

3. Finding and attracting customers is a business startup challenge.

Attracting customers is an area where many new businesses stumble. After all, if no one buys what you’re selling, you can’t succeed. Ideally, you conducted market research before launching your business to ensure your offerings had a receptive market. Now you must identify your target audience, understand their needs and determine what they’re willing to pay.

How to overcome the challenge of attracting customers:

To find and attract customers, you must create a marketing plan that identifies the following:

Your target market

Your product’s strengths and weaknesses compared to the competition

Your marketing position and message

Where you plan to market your product

Your marketing budget

Many new businesses have slim marketing budgets, so low-cost ways to make a big impact are essential. For example, marketers on a budget can consider the following:

Creating social media marketing campaigns

Setting up co-marketing agreements with companies that sell complementary products

Creating email marketing campaigns

Utilizing video marketing to create brand trust

Hosting events or initiatives the media will cover

Bottom Line

Once you start building a customer base, keep them by providing excellent customer service and encouraging brand ambassadors who can spread the word about your company.

Airpods Not Connecting To Iphone? 8 Fixes

AirPods are a global bestseller. You can find them on people’s ears everywhere—Airports, Eateries, Cars, and everything in between. They’re the most sold wireless earphones since launch.

However, you might face some problems every now and again—like your AirPods not connecting to your iPhone.

Most of the AirPods connection issues are very easily fixed, and work on AirPods Pro as well. So if you’re stuck saying “my AirPods won’t connect to my iPhone”, here’s what to do.

Before you read, please make sure your AirPods and Charging Case have enough battery to work.

1. Make sure iPhone’s Bluetooth is on

The first solution is pretty straightforward. If you find that your AirPods 1st Gen, AirPods 2nd Gen, or AirPods Pro are not connecting to your iPhone, just take a quick look at the Bluetooth settings on your iPhone.

Go to Settings ⟶ Bluetooth and make sure that it’s turned on. (or open Control Center and make sure the Bluetooth logo is colored blue.)

2. Fix pairing issue

AirPods don’t have a physical button to turn them off, they just nest inside the case and sleep. Many times if you’re facing connection issues between your iPhone and AirPods, just put both AirPods inside the charging case and close the lid.

Now, wait for 15 seconds and lift the case lid. Connect again. This may fix the problem you’re facing.

3. Turn Bluetooth off completely

If the above two solutions didn’t work for you, head over to Settings ⟶ Bluetooth and tap the Bluetooth toggle to turn it entirely off. (Do not use Control Center.)

After a few seconds, turn Bluetooth on and try to pair your AirPods again. (Open the AirPods charging case lid. You will see your AirPods under MY DEVICES. Tap your AirPods.)

4. Restart your iPhone

As we’ve mentioned many times before on iGeeksBlog, restarting your device can fix a myriad of issues. Let’s see if this old trick can get the job done.

But before you do, head over to Settings and completely turn off your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Now, turn off your phone, and after 45 seconds, turn it back on. Now switch on Bluetooth, open your AirPods’ case lid, and connect the AirPods. It should work; if not, head to the next solution.

5. Use the setup button to connect

None of the above solutions fix the problem? Well, we’ll step things up a bit now.

Software updates aren’t only to add new features; they also remove bugs and polish existing features. Being on the latest version ensures that you’re getting the best Apple has to offer at any given time. To make sure you’re on the latest version:

Launch Settings on your iPhone ⟶ Tap General ⟶ Software Update. If you see a pending update, tap Download and Install.

7. Make sure you have the latest AirPods firmware

I used the words ‘make sure’ in the header and not ‘update your AirPods to latest firmware’ because you cannot. Apple does this automatically in the background, and you get no pop-up saying, ‘Hey, your AirPods are now running the latest version.’ The current firmware for AirPods 1st Gen is 6.8.8, 2nd Gen is 4A400.

8. Reset your AirPods

If none of the above solutions worked for you, there’s a high chance that you need to reset your AirPods and make them like new. Resetting will delete all the tap/touch customizations you’ve made. After reset it will be as if you’re setting up the AirPods for the first time.

Also, if you face issues related to the connection between AirPods and Mac, try closing the case lid and reconnecting again. Or if this fails:
