Fix 2: Fix The Issue By Restarting The Mac

If you are trying to search for updates using the Windows update standalone installer, you may encounter a never-ending search for the update. This can be caused by several reasons, and the issue has affected all the previous version of Windows including 7,8 and the latest Windows 10.

If you are facing a similar problem and the Windows update standalone installer is stuck at searching for update screen without any progress, here are a couple of fixes to resolve the same.

1. Disable Automatic Updates (Windows 7/Windows 8)

If you are using Windows 7, try to disable automatic Windows updates and then try to run the standalone installer. Here is how to do it.

Type window update in the search box.

Restart your computer and wait for the PC to boot normally. Run the standalone update installer and check for any improvements.

If you are still facing the same problem, do the following:

Download KB4490628. Make sure you download the right version of the software depending on your OS edition and build. Run and install the SSU driver.

Restart your PC.

2. Update via WSUS Offline Updater (Windows 7 / 8)

Alternatively, you can also use WSUS Offline updater, a small open source software utility to download missing updates from the Microsoft server automatically.

Begin with downloading WSUS Offline Updater.  Make sure you download the most recent version of the tool from the page.

Extract the wsusoffline.zip file.

Check “Verify downloaded updates “ and “Include C++ Runtime Libraries and .Net Frameworks” boxes.

Once the downloading of updates is over, close UpdateGenerator.exe.

Wsus Offline Installer will start installing all the pending updates downloaded in the last phase. The update installation may take a few minutes to a few hours.

3. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter  (Windows 10)

Microsoft allows you to download Windows Update troubleshooter. The troubleshooter scans the PCs for the update related problems and suggests solutions accordingly.

4. Download Most Recent SSU

Download either 32-bit or 64-bit SSU update.

If everything goes right, it will scan your PC for pending update and prompt you to install the pending update.

5. Download Most Recent KB

If installing the most recent SSU did not resolve the problem, try downloading the most recent KB from the official Microsoft source.

When the SSD is not recognized or is simply dead, you don’t just lose precious data but will also have to shell out quite a few bucks for a replacement drive.

Most usually go with the latter without much thought. But what if you can get the SSD working? Read ahead to find out.

What are the symptoms of drive failure?

While the SSD (Solid State Drive) and HDD (Hard Disk Drive) are completely different in storing data, a common aspect is that both fail sooner or later. Though the former has a considerably longer life span.

An SSD can last 10 years or more, while an HDD usually wears out after 4-6 years. The reason, SSDs have no moving parts, as opposed to HDDs.

But it’s imperative that you identify the signs of a failing SSD before it’s completely dead for several reasons. Here are a few things to look out for:

Get errors while reading or writing files: When a drive is about to fail, it will throw errors when accessing or saving files to certain locations.

Computer slows down: A slow computer could be a sign of a falling SSD, though remember, that’s not the only reason.

Issues booting the PC: If you are unable to boot Windows and get an error frequently, chances are the SSD is to blame.

Applications start to crash: In many cases, the applications crash when the SSD is dead, and you need to fix things to run them again.

How do I fix a dead SSD drive?

Before we head to the complex solutions, try these:

Make sure the connections are in order. Remove the SATA cable from the SSD and then plug it back in just to be sure.

Unplug other non-critical peripherals from the PC, and then connect the SSD.

Plug the SSD into another computer to verify whether it’s dead or the previous PC couldn’t read it. If it’s the latter, replace the cable and check the ports. For the former, the other solutions here will help.

Update the BIOS since it could an issue there that’s giving the impression that the SSD is dead.

If you can’t figure things out, move to the next fixes.

NOTE

The solutions here are for an SSD that has gone dead over the course of time and is not damaged in any way. If it’s the latter, we recommend you take it to a repair center immediately.

1. Keep the SSD in an idle state

Turn off the PC, and unplug the data cable from the SSD but leave the SATA power cable connected.

Turn on the PC, enter the BIOS, and let it sit idly for 30 minutes or so. Do not use the computer during this period.

Now, turn off the computer, disconnect the drive, and wait for 30 seconds.

Again, connect the drive using the SATA power cable, turn on the computer, and wait for 30 minutes.

Repeat the process 2-3 times, then connect the drive normally, and it should show up.

2. Reset the BIOS

NOTE

The steps to reset the BIOS are different for every manufacturer, and the process listed below is only to provide an understanding of the concept. We recommend you look through the manufacturer’s website for the exact steps.

Power off the computer, turn it on, and repeatedly hit the relevant key (depending on the manufacturer) to enter the BIOS. It’s usually F1, F2, F10, F12, or Del.

Once in the BIOS, navigate through the various tabs and look for an option that says Load Optimal Defaults, Load Setup Defaults, Load Default Options, or something similar, and select it.

Confirm the reset, and wait for the process to complete.

Once done, turn on the computer, and it should recognize the SSD.

Oftentimes, an issue with the BIOS makes us think that the SSD is dead, and resetting it helps fix things in no time.

After downloading and installing the firmware update, check if it can fix the dead SSD. For many users, it did the trick, and we recommend you update the SSD firmware.

Updating drivers is critical for the effective functioning of every device, including the SSD. So, make sure you have the latest ones. If Windows doesn’t find an update, you can always manually install the latest drivers, though it’s more time-consuming.

Alternatively, you can use dedicated updater software such as Outbyte Driver Updater that automatically scans your PC for outdated drivers and install the corresponding version for your hardware.

5. Run the Check Disk utility

Windows 11 Search Not Working? Try These 10 Fixes

Is Windows 11’s Search feature not working on your PC? Are you having trouble finding files? There are many items that can break Windows’ search functionality, including both user actions as well as system actions.

Fortunately, there are a few standard fixes you can apply when Windows 11 Search is not working on your PC.

Restart Your PC

When Windows Search stops working, the first thing to try is to restart your PC. This resets many temporary items on your computer and gives Search a fresh new chance to launch.

To restart your Windows 11 PC, open the Start menu, select the Power option, and choose Restart.

When your PC boots back up, access Search and see if it functions.

Update Your PC

On Windows 11, all you need is an internet connection to download and install system updates:

Open the Settings app by pressing Windows + I keys at the same time.

In Settings, from the sidebar on the left, choose Windows Update.

In the Windows Update screen on the right, select the Check for updates button.

Download and install the available updates.

Relaunch Windows Search

Your Windows 11 system uses a process called SearchHost to provide search services. This process remains suspended when you’re not using Windows Search. But, as soon as you launch Search, this process comes into action.

It’s possible there’s a minor glitch with this process that’s causing Search not to work. In this case, restarting the process might fix your issue.

Select End process in the prompt that opens.

Relaunch Windows Search by selecting the magnifying glass icon on the taskbar.

Roll Back a Windows 11 Update

If Search stopped working after you installed a Windows update, chances are that the installed update is the culprit. In the past, there have been updates that caused many system features to break.

Luckily, in Windows 11, you can roll back an installed update and this should fix your issue.

Launch the Settings app by pressing Windows + I keys simultaneously.

In Settings, from the sidebar on the left, choose Windows Update.

On the Windows Update screen, select Update history.

Scroll down the Update history page and choose Uninstall updates.

In the Installed Updates window that opens, select the most recent update in the list. Then, select Uninstall at the top.

In the prompt that opens, choose Yes.

Restart your PC and check if Search works.

Change Windows Search Settings

If you’re experiencing an issue where Windows 11 Search works but it doesn’t scan all the files stored on your computer, there might be an issue with the Search configuration.

You can take a look at your Search configuration, make required changes, and that should likely fix your search-related problems.

Press the Windows + I keys simultaneously and Settings will open.

In Settings, select Privacy & security from the left sidebar.

In the pane on the right, choose Searching Windows.

Select Find my files on the screen that opens and you’ll have a Classic and an Enhanced option.

If you select Classic, Windows will only scan your Documents, Pictures, Music, and Desktop folders. If you choose Enhanced, Windows will scan your entire PC.

If you want Search to look for files across your entire PC, choose the Enhanced option.

Review the Exclude folders from enhanced search section as this contains the list of folders that Windows Search will not scan. Remove any folders from here that you want to be included in your searches.

Restart the Windows Search Service

It’s worth restarting the Windows Search service if you still can’t use the Search feature on your PC. This allows Search to reload from scratch.

Press the Windows + R keys at the same time to open Run.

Close the Services app.

Rebuild the Windows Search Index

In the Index Settings tab, from the Troubleshooting section, select the Rebuild button.

Select OK in the prompt that opens.

When your index is rebuilt, open Windows Search and see if it functions.

Use Windows Search Troubleshooter

Windows 11 comes with various troubleshooters, one of which is Search and Indexing troubleshooter. You can use this to find and fix issues with Windows Search.

Press the Windows + X keys at the same time and choose Settings from the menu.

Select System from the left sidebar in Settings.

Scroll down the System page and choose Troubleshoot.

Select Other troubleshooters.

Next to Search and Indexing, select Run.

On the Search and Indexing window, select the issues you’re experiencing with the search feature. Then, at the bottom, select Next.

The troubleshooter will find issues with Search and offer help to fix those issues.

Fix Corrupt Files

Corrupt files are often the cause of many issues on your Windows 11 PC. It’s possible a system file related to Windows Search has gone corrupt, and this may be the reason Search is not working.

Luckily, Windows 11 includes a command that you can use to fix any corrupt files. You basically run the command from Windows Terminal and then the command takes care of the rest for you.

Open the Start menu and select All apps at the top.

Select Yes in the User Account Control prompt.

On the Windows Terminal window that opens, type the following command and press Enter: sfc /scannow

Wait for Windows to find and fix corrupt files on your system.

Reset Your PC

If nothing else works, your last resort is to reset your PC. This resets your custom setting options and brings those options back to their default values.

Before you begin the reset process, you can choose whether you’d like to keep your files or you’re happy with your files being deleted.

To reset a Windows 11 PC:

Choose the Reset PC button next to Reset this PC.

Select either Keep my files or Remove everything.

Follow the on-screen instructions to finish resetting your PC.

Do you keep getting a constant notification that asks you to update your Apple ID but nothing happens when you do so? Then you are not alone and here’s how you can fix this issue on your device.

You along with many other users seem to be getting this notification due to an inherent bug in iOS 15 that puts you in a login loop where you are constantly asked to update your Apple ID in the Settings app.

This usually happens when you face a bug during the update process when the Settings app is unable to communicate with the Apple Servers, there is a background service conflict or if your device is still trying to source tokens and security tickets from its previous cache.

This issue can also occur due to many other reasons as well but this seems to be the most common one for now. You can use the list of known fixes below on your device to get out of this login loop on your device.

You can try the following fixes if you are facing this issue on your device. We recommend you start with the known fixes and then try the other fixes in this list. The known fixes are tricks and steps that worked for most users around the internet, facing the same ‘Update your Apple ID Settings’ login loop on their devices. 

3 Primary fixes

We recommend you first hard restart your device to try and solve background service and cache issues on your system. This should help you get out of the loop on most devices. Let’s get started. 

Fix #1: Hard Restart

A hard restart helps clear your device cache, delete temporary files, restart background services, fetch new tokens and tickets from the Apple Servers, re-establish connections, and a lot more. A Hard Restart is enough of a refresh for your device to help it get out of the ‘Update your Apple ID Settings’ loop easily. Use the guide below to hard restart your Apple device depending on its model and type. 

For devices with a home button: Press and hold the Power + Home button simultaneously on your device. Let go of the buttons once the Apple logo shows up on your screen. 

For devices without a home button: Hold down the Power + Volume down key on your device until you see the Apple logo appear on your screen. Let go of the keys once it shows up. 

Your device will now hard restart. We recommend you try signing back into your Apple ID again and leave your device idle, connected to a Wi-Fi network for a while. This should help fix the login loop issue on most iOS and iPadOS devices.

Fix #2: Sign out and sign in

If you’re still facing the ‘Update Apple ID Settings’ login loop on your device then you can now try more serious fixes.

We will now sign out of your Apple ID and hard restart your device a couple of times. This will help clear all data from your device and help it update its services in the background as well. Once your device is working as intended, we can then sign in to your Apple ID. Follow the guide below to get you started. 

Step 1 of 4: Sign out of iCloud and all other apps and services using Apple ID

Open the Settings app and tap on your Apple ID at the top. 

Scroll to the bottom and tap on ‘Sign out’. 

Enter your Apple ID password to confirm your identity and choice.

Once done, tap on ‘Turn off’ in the top right corner of your screen.

You will now be signed out of your Apple ID and your iCloud account will be removed from your device as well. Ideally, you should now be signed out of all services you using your Apple ID as well. You can now follow the steps below to hard restart your device.  

Step 2 of 4: Hard Restart

Use the guide below to hard restart your device depending on its configuration. 

For devices with a home button: Press and hold the Power + Home button until you see the Apple logo. 

For devices without a home button: Press and hold the Power + Volume down key until you see the Apple logo. 

Let go of the keys once you see the Apple logo and let your device restart. Once restarted, unlock your device and leave it idle, connected to a Wi-Fi network for a while. You can now use the guide below to hard restart your device a second time. 

Step 3 of 4: Hard Restart 2x

A second hard restart will ensure that all your previous Apple ID caches and information is removed from your device. Hard Restart your device a second time and check if you are facing the login loop again. You should no longer be getting the prompt to update your Apple ID in the Settings app.

However, if you do see this message, we recommend you hard restart your device a few more times until you stop seeing this message. Once you stop seeing this message, you can use the guide below to sign back into your Apple ID. 

Step 4 of 4: Re sign-in

Open the Settings app and tap on ‘Sign-in’ at the top. 

Use your credentials to sign in to your Apple ID. 

Once signed in, let your device do its thing and set up your Apple ID on your device. We recommend you leave your device connected to a Wi-Fi network for a while for all the changes to take place. Once you are signed in, you can customize iCloud and other services depending on your preferences.

And that’s it! You should no longer face the login loop to ‘Update your Apple ID Settings’ on your device again.

Fix #3: Reset your iOS device without an Apple ID

If the issue persists on your system, then it’s time to reset your device without an Apple ID. This will most definitely help fix the issue on your iOS device however, you will end up losing all your locally stored data. Hence, we recommend you backup your device data using iTunes or iCloud before proceeding with this guide. Once you are done, you can follow the steps given below to get you started. 

Step 1 of 3: Sign out of your Apple ID Step 2 of 3: Hard Restart your device

Now that you are signed out of your device, you need to hard restart it once so that we can reset it with all the background services running properly and updated details. Use one of the guides above to hard restart your device depending on its type. 

Step 3 of 3: Reset your device

Once your device hard restarts, it’s time to now reset your device. Once again, ensure that you have created a backup of all your locally stored data as you won’t be able to recover any of it in the future after this point. Follow the steps below on your device once you are ready. 

Open the Settings app and tap on ‘General’. 

Scroll to the bottom and tap on ‘Transfer or Reset iPhone’. 

Tap on ‘Erase All Content and Settings’. 

Tap on ‘Continue’. 

Confirm your password and now follow the on-screen instructions to reset your device. 

The process should soon begin and your iOS device will now start resetting itself. The device will restart a couple of times on its own during this process which is completely normal.

Ensure that you have enough battery on your device to see it through the entire process. If not, we recommend you plug in your device to the wall and leave it for a while. You should be able to set up your device as new once it has been reset and you should no longer face the ‘Update your Apple ID Settings’ loop on your device.

4 General fixes you can try

If the above fixes failed to fix the issue for you, then this indicates a more serious issue with your device. It could be mismatched Apple ID information, an issue with your Apple ID, a hardware conflict in the background, or a background conflict due to improper OS updates.
