A musician’s path to success is certainly not an easy one. Aspiring artists must stand out against thousands of their peers and navigate the complicated music and performing arts industry. Furthermore, a traditional music education often leaves graduates under-prepared to have a career as a working artist. As such, artists need to spend many years building the needed skills to succeed, as well as thousands of dollars on equipment, recording studio fees, and management. This often forces them to take day jobs, taking away from them many hours that could’ve been spent to hone their craft.

According to Jaz, he went down the university path because his options were limited at the time, and, while he doesn’t regret the experience, he believes that there is a more effective and cost-efficient way for aspiring artists to leverage their love for music into a sustainable career.

“When I came out of Uni I thought my qualifications would eventually translate into a career. But it didn’t, so for around 6 years I lived a dual lifestyle – gigs on the weekends and grinding a 9-to-5 job in telecommunications. That was until I began thinking outside the box and looking at a music career more from an entrepreneur’s viewpoint rather than purely a musician’s.”

Music Valley’s artist roadmap consists of three distinct phases, all geared toward preparing artists, singers, and songwriters for a career in their chosen field. The first phase is Master Your Craft, which provides theoretical and practical music education. They will work closely with a teacher or mentor to develop a series of customized objectives, based on Music Valley’s framework. In addition to weekly sessions, students can attend various rehearsals, workshops, masterclasses, events and performances throughout the year.

The second phase is divided into two sub-phases. Phase 2.1 is Write, Record & Release, where artists collaborate with the Music Valley tribe to develop, record and release their music. In this phase, artists can create great songs by utilizing the various skills, styles and expertise of a diverse community of artists. This phase enables students to develop their song portfolios and includes a 12-month artist development program where artists can hone their live act in preparation for their release.

“Our objective isn’t to make the one-hit wonder guy. We aim to realistically increase the chance that artists in Phase 2.1 come out with two of the important assets – their recorded music and a live act, which isn’t commonly provided with a university degree,” Jaz says.

“At Music Valley, artists receive the opportunity to apply the skills they’ve learned and collaborate with other musicians, in a real context that’s designed for the modern music artist. By working closely with our team and partners in the industry, our students and artists have access to an entire ecosystem of resources to help build their skills, their assets and their music network. This means that they have our full support in achieving their goals faster, bypassing traditional outdated models so they can thrive in their chosen stream,” Jaz says.

Why Silicon Valley Never Dies

The leading indicator of the health of Silicon Valley– how bad the traffic is – tells me that the Valley is back — big time.

This wasn’t supposed to happen. According to Larry Ellison, Dave Troy, Jordan DiPietro, Judy Estrinand many others, who have declared the end of Silicon Valley over the years, the age of rampant innovation and free-flowing capital are supposed to be long gone.

But if that’s true, why does it suddenly take an hour to make a 15-mile commute at rush hour?

Everybody’s talking about the new tech bubble. While some embrace the bubble theory (the growth will end in a crash), others believe in the boom theory (the growth will moderate over time), there’s no question that there’s a lot of money flying around in Silicon Valley.

Fueled by rumors of a failed $6 billion acquisition of Groupon by Google, as well as the ripeness of privately-held social giants like Facebook and Twitterfor IPO or acquisition, the bubble chatter is focused on the big deals by the biggest companies.

But all these high-visibility cases involve non-acquisitions – companies that have refused, failed or otherwise opted out of acquisition – which are the opposite of what is actually fueling the boom.

The real cause is a newish phenomenon whereby startups pursue acquisition as a strategy far more than before.

Here’s what’s going on. The pace of innovation continues to accelerate. This makes it more difficult for the big companies to compete with new technology. Big companies are bogged down by silos, politics and bureaucratic processes that make nimble flexibility very difficult. So they buy.

Meanwhile when the recession hit and large companies faced sudden reductions in revenue, they found it necessary to cut spending to make their numbers. Naturally, they slashed research and development budgets.

Now that revenue is picking up again, they find themselves with cash but lacking new technology. So they take their cash and buy technology in the form of a small-company acquisition.

The shift at larger companies from developing to buying new technology has triggered a shift in the strategies of both startups and venture capitalists.

The traditional objective of startups was to grow the technology and business and infrastructure to the point where the company could be self-sustaining, profitable and publicly traded — not necessarily in that order. That was the old vision, and there are still some companies trying to do this.

The new objective is simply to develop the next killer technology, service or business model while remaining “agnostic” about how money will be made. In other words, acquisition has been legitimized as the most likely way to monetize an idea for the inventors.

That actually lowers the risk for VCs. The reason is that, unlike before, a company doesn’t need to excel at all aspects of the business in order for them to recoup their investment. All they need is the right technology, which usually comes with the kind of people.

Who cares if they don’t know how to run a business, can’t sell or have some other failing? The cash rich tech giants don’t care about any of this.

As a result of this lower risk, and higher likelihood of monetization, investing in tech startups has become more appealing. And so the money is really flowing and valuations are through the roof.

There are other benefits to big companies to buying, rather than developing, new technology. Acquisition provides more control. Instead of being stuck with whatever approach is developed internally, big companies can just go shopping for the best one — or the one that’s already been proved in the market.

Graduates often face a dreaded catch-22: you can’t get a job without experience, but you can’t get experience until you get a job. Classical music performance graduates sometimes confront a slightly different version of the dilemma.

“You cannot get a good job without a good instrument,” says Ivana Jasova (CFA’15), who graduated with a Doctor of Musical Arts in violin performance from the School of Music, “but you cannot get a good instrument without the money and security of a job.”

Now, thanks to the $10,000 she’ll receive as one of this year’s three recipients of an Esther B. and Albert S. Kahn Career Entry Award, intended to help College of Fine Arts students transition from school to career, Jasova will be able to buy the violin she needs. The two other Kahn Award recipients are Courtney Lynn Nelson (CFA’15), who earned a Master of Fine Arts in scene design in the School of Theatre graduate design program, and Josué Rojas (CFA’15), who completed a Master of Fine Arts in the School of Visual Arts graduate painting program.

“I am so lucky to get this award,” says Jasova, who expects to spend as much as $25,000 on an instrument. “With the money I have saved up and the award, I’ll be able to afford an instrument, which is something so rare.”

A native of Serbia who came to the United States for college, Jasova earned a Master of Music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and a bachelor’s from the University of California, Los Angeles, Herb Alpert School of Music. While at BU, she performed regularly with the Boston Civic Symphony and the Cantata Singers and Ensemble. This summer, she will travel to Tanglewood as a fellow of the Tanglewood Music Center.

“I find myself drawn to 20th-century music, also romantic repertoire, pieces that require a lot of passion,” she says. “I also like composers like Bartók, because he incorporates folk tunes into his compositions. Those folk tunes, some of them are familiar to me because I am from Serbia. Those compositions—it’s like a modern setting for something that is ingrained in me, that I grew up with.”

The instrument she’s played for the last several years is on loan, along with a bow, from the Maestro Foundation in Los Angeles. “I am really grateful to them,” she says, noting that all she has to do is pay the insurance on the instrument, which was made in Vienna in 2009.

“The more I play this violin, the more I like it,” she says. “Over the years, it’s just been opening up. The sound has been becoming warmer, richer. It started projecting more. It has a really lush, dark sound. In its lower range, it’s similar to the sound of a viola.”

Normally, Jasova would have to return the instrument upon graduation, but now, she says, she may buy it. “It’s not set in stone yet, but unless I find something else that’s spectacularly spectacular…”

Established in 1985, the Kahn Awards are funded by a $1 million endowment from the late Esther Kahn (SED’55, Hon.’86). They are presented each year to three College of Fine Arts students who are in the final semester of their undergraduate or graduate studies.

Recipients were chosen by Deborah Kahn (SED’67)—a daughter of Esther and the late Albert Kahn (SED’59,’62)—and her husband, Harris Miller, along with a panel of local arts leaders; this year’s panel includes philanthropist Jane Pappalardo (CFA’65), actor Will Lyman (CFA’71), and Anne Hawley, director of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Decisions are based on the artists’ statements about how they would use the award to launch their careers as well as the their concern for social issues and the artist’s role in contemporary society.

Stage designer Nelson hopes to use her award to jump-start meaningful productions in places that lack arts organizations. Nelson lights up when she talks about an independent study project that took her and four other CFA students to Charleston, W.Va., in spring and summer 2014 to stage Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People on a floating dock in the Elk River.

The setting was chosen because earlier that year a chemical used in coal production spilled into the river, leaving thousands of residents temporarily without potable water and raising questions about inspections and enforcement. Ibsen’s play is about a small town whose local leaders discover than the town’s health baths are contaminated and disagree about how or whether to reveal the truth.

Working under the auspices of New York City’s New Brooklyn Theatre, the four spent weeks in the area, staying with local residents, learning about their lives, and crafting a production that featured locals as performers.

Nelson says she may use her Kahn Award to create a theater workshop in a nearby part of West Virginia. “For me the Kahn is permission to prioritize these idealistic projects,” she says.

Painter Rojas shares a similar commitment to community and to giving back.

“I am a product of community arts,” says Rojas. “I wouldn’t be doing it had someone not taken the time to give a kid a bucket of paint and a wall.”

He credits the Precita Eyes Mural Arts Center in the Mission District of San Francisco with helping him find his path. A native of El Salvador, he came to California with his mother and three older brothers when he was just a toddler. His introduction to painting came at a fortuitous time: he was 15, and his father, who had remained in El Salvador, died that year.

“I grew up not knowing much of my origins, just a little bit, food and culture,” says Rojas. “Through the arts I was able to find a lot of my own history and origins. So storytelling on the walls via murals really appealed to me. I learned a lot from that.”

Ample evidence of his explorations could be found in his cheerfully cluttered 808 Commonwealth Avenue studio: pictures that blend traditional painting with elements of collage, cartoons, and street art. He has returned to Central America for public art projects, and in Boston, he led a School of Visual Arts partnership with Roxbury Prep Charter Middle School students, teachers, and staff to create a 175-foot street-side mural at the school.

Now Rojas wants to give back, through teaching and community and public art programs, what art has given him.

“I want to tell stories, stories of Americans, international stories, and transnational stories,” he says. “I think it’s important right now, in our era of globalization, for us to understand ourselves and understand other people, those who are interested in coming here and those who are not. As the world is becoming more connected, it’s important to know who we’re connecting with and how we relate.”

What is a Stable Diffusion?

Stable Diffusion models function as latent diffusion models. It learns the latent structure of input by modeling how the data attributes diffuse through the latent space. They belong to the deep generative neural network. It is considered stable because we guide the results using original images, text, etc. On the other hand, an unstable diffusion will be unpredictable.

The Concepts of Stable Diffusion

Stable Diffusion uses the Diffusion or latent diffusion model (LDM), a probabilistic model. These models are trained like other deep learning models. Still, the objective here is removing the need for continuous applications of signal processing denoting a kind of noise in the signals in which the probability density function equals the normal distribution. We refer to this as the Gaussian noise applied to the training images. We achieve this through a sequence of denoising autoencoders (DAE). DAEs contribute by changing the reconstruction criterion. This is what alters the continuous application of signal processing. It is initialized to add a noise process to the standard autoencoder.

In a more detailed explanation, Stable Diffusion consists of 3 essential parts: First is the variational autoencoder (VAE) which, in simple terms, is an artificial neural network that performs as probabilistic graphical models. Next is the U-Net block. This convolutional neural network (CNN) was developed for image segmentation. Lastly is the text encoder part. A trained CLIP ViT-L/14 text encoder deals with this. It handles the transformations of the text prompts into an embedding space.

The VAE encoder compresses the image pixel space values into a smaller dimensional latent space to carry out image diffusion. This helps the image not to lose details. It is represented again in pixeled pictures.

Common Applications of Diffusion

Let us quickly look at three common areas where diffusion models can be applied:

Text-to-Image: This approach does not use images but a piece of text “prompt” to generate related photos.

Text-to-Videos: Diffusion models are used for generating videos out of text prompts. Current research uses this in media to do interesting feats like creating online ad videos, explaining concepts, and creating short animation videos, song videos, etc.

Text-to-3D: This stable diffusion approach converts input text to 3D images.

Applying diffusers can help generate free images that are plagiarism free. This provides content for your projects, materials, and even marketing brands. Instead of hiring a painter or photographer, you can generate your images. Instead of a voice-over artist, you can create your unique audio. Now let’s look at Image-to-image Generation.

Setting Up Environment

This task requires GPU and a good development environment like processing images and graphics. You are expected to ensure you have GPU available if you want to follow along with this project. We can use Google Colab since it provides a suitable environment and GPU, and you can search for it online. Follow the steps below to engage the available GPU:

Go to the Runtime tab towards the top right.

Then select GPU as a hardware accelerator from the drop-down option.

Importing Dependencies

There are several dependencies in using the pipeline from Huggingface. We will first start by importing them into our project environment.

Installing Libraries

Some libraries are not preinstalled in Colab. We need to start by installing them before importing from them.

Let us explain the installations we have done above. Firstly are the diffusers, transformers, scipy, and ftfy. SciPy and ftfy are standard Python libraries we employ for everyday Python tasks. We will explain the new major libraries below.

Diffusers: Diffusers is a library made available by Hugging Face for getting well-trained diffusion models for generating images. We are going to use it for accessing our pipeline and other packages.

Transformers: Transformers contain tools and APIs that help us cut training costs from scratch.

StableDiffusionDepth2ImgPipeline is the library that reduces our code. All we need to do is pass an image and a prompt describing our expectations.

Instantiating the Pre-trained Diffusers

Next, we just make an instance of the pre-trained diffuser we imported above and assign it to our GPU. Here this is Cuda.

Now, we need an image to diffuse into another image. You can use your photo. In this example, we are using an online image for convenience. Feel free to use your URL or images.

Now we have a usable image. Let’s now show some diffusion feats on it. To achieve this, we wrap prompts to the pictures. These are sets of texts with keywords describing our expectations from the Diffusion. Instead of generating a random new image, we can use prompts to guide the model’s output.

Note that we set the strength to 0.7. This is an average. Also, note the negative_prompt is set to None. We will look at this more later.

Creating Negative Prompts

Another approach is to create a negative prompt to counter the intended output. This makes the pipeline more flexible. We can do this by assigning a negative prompt to the negative_prompt variable.
