Panasonic reveals lineup of four new LUMIX cameras
There have been a whole slew of new cameras and accessories announced at Photokina 2023, and Panasonic is adding to that by announcing four new cameras of its own. These new devices are all part of the LUMIX series of cameras, and range from cameras that are still in development to ones that will be available later this year.
The camera comes with support for 4K PHOTO and video, offering that video at 30p (60Hz) or 24p in MP4 format. Splashproof and dustproof, the LUMIX G85 also supports real-time image output via HDMI and comes equipped with a 3.5mm jack that allows compatibility with external microphones. The G85 will be the first of these four cameras out of the gate, launching at $899.99 for the body only or $999.99 with a 12-60mm lens.
Next up is the LUMIX LX10, which comes with the F1.4 high-speed LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMILUX lens and a high sensitivity 1-inch MOS sensor that grants it 20.1-megapixel resolution. The lens itself features an aperture ring that hands over direct control of the aperture to its users, while the Venus Engine (which is also present in the LUMIX G85) works in tandem with the MOS sensor to boost picture quality.
Like the LUMIX G85, the LX10 can record QFHD 4K video (3840×2160) at 30p (60Hz) or 24p in MP4, and both cameras have WiFi connectivity that allows users to quickly share photos and videos. The LX10 will come in at a lower price point than the G85, with Panasonic giving it a price $699.99 and announcing a November launch window for it.
Third in line is the LUMIX FZ2500. Just Like the G85, the FZ2500 features a high sensitivity 20.1-megapixel MOS sensor, though this time that sensor is paired with a 20x optical zoom LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens. Prospective buyers can also look forward to recording video at Cinema 4K resolutions (4096×2160) at 24 fps or in QFHD 4K resolution at up to 30 fps in MOV/MP4 format.
Meanwhile, expect 1080p videos to have an ALL-Intra bitrate of 200Mbps and a IPB bitrate of 100Mbps. The same WiFi functionality supported by the other new LUMIX cameras is here too, as is support for the Venus Engine and the ability to output images and videos in real-time over HDMI. This one is the most expensive camera of the bunch, demanding a $1199.99 price tag and launching in December.
Finally, we come to the LUMIX GH5. This one has the distinction of being the only Panasonic camera revealed today that’s still in development. The major feature of this camera lies in its ability to record 4K 60p/50p and 4:2:2 10-bit 4K video. It will also be sporting a 6K PHOTO feature when it arrives, allowing users to extract 18-megapixel still images from video. While this camera doesn’t have a set price or release date yet, Panasonic says it should be available commercially in early 2023.

The Nest Cam Battery costs the same as the brand new Doorbell at £179.99 / $179.99, and is available to pre-order straight away from Google.
It will go on sale on 24 August from Google as well as retailers including John Lewis, Argos and Currys in the UK.
If you want to install it outdoors and run it off the mains, the optional weatherproof cables come in two different lengths: 5m (£29.99) and 10m (£34.99). This was a bugbear of the original Nest Cam Outdoor whose cable was far too long for many people.
An anti-theft mount costs £14.99 and, for indoor use, a stand for use on a table or shelf is £29.99.
The Nest Cam Floodlight costs £269.99 / US$279.99, and nothing is yet know about any accessories for it. There is no release date for it yet.

As it’s IP54 water resistant, you can use the Nest Cam Battery indoors or outdoors. Its magnetic mount has been tested to withstand hurricane-force winds.
Like the rest of the range, the Nest Cam Battery is ‘intelligent’ and can recognise people, animals and vehicles. This means you can get alerts for these things without needing a Nest Aware subscription.
Plus, thanks to some on-board storage, it will also give you three hours of history out of the box. That doesn’t sound like much, but as it will only record when meaningful motion is detected, it could be a week or even two before that storage is full and old clips start to get overwritten.
The camera records 1080p video in HDR. Google hasn’t said if it uses a 4K sensor like the Nest Cam IQ, but at this lower price and with the battery-powered option, it seems unlikely. There’s definitely no built-in Google Assistant.
When run on battery power, the camera can only do ‘event-based recording’ and to get continuous recording you’ll need a Nest Aware Plus subscription and to power the Cam from the mains.
Thanks to the more powerful chip, activity zones can be set up without Nest Aware and because it’s able to process what it sees without relying on the cloud, you’ll get notifications faster and there’s better security and privacy.
All the new cameras work with the Google Home app and you can also view their video feeds on a Nest smart display.
A built-in speaker and microphone allow two-way talk and, again, you can do this via the app or a Nest Hub.
When using the wall mount, the cable tucks behind it for a neater look. Obviously, when battery powered there’s no cable: Google says battery life will depend upon how many events it has to record, but with an average of 8-10 events per day, it should last for three months before needing a recharge.

Google wouldn’t give us permission to use the images of the device in this article, but suffice to say that the Floodlight looks much like rivals, with two circular LED lights either side of a camera.
Aside from the price and the fact that Google says it has been designed from the ground up and lights up when meaningful activity is detected, nothing else has yet revealed about it. It’s certainly a lot more expensive than even Ring’s latest Floodlight Cam Wired Plus.

At under £100 / $100, the Nest Cam 2 is a cheaper indoor, wired camera that’s officially called the second-generation Nest Cam. It looks nothing like the original (below) which was effectively originally a Dropcam.

It, too, gets the on-board intelligence and storage, so will continue to capture events even if your Wi-Fi goes down.

For the first time, MIT scientists have engineered a way to watch and record those microscopic scales as they grow and tile themselves on a developing butterfly inside its chrysalis. The team raised painted lady butterflies, Vanessa cardui, waiting for the caterpillars to encase themselves in chrysalises. Once metamorphosis began, the team sliced into the cuticles of each chrysalis and covered the openings with glass coverslips, allowing them to view developing wings through that window. The team recorded wing scale development from start to finish and published their findings in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Butterfly scales are complex microstructures, but most of what is known about their formation is based on still images of developing and mature butterfly wings. The team knew they needed a clearer, more comprehensive view of butterfly wing development to understand how the scales work.
“Previous studies provide compelling snapshots at select stages of development; unfortunately, they don’t reveal the continuous timeline and sequence of what happens as scale structures grow,” co-author and mechanical engineer Matthias Kolle said in a statement. “We needed to see more to start understanding it better.”

To visualize that continuous sequence, the team used speckle-correlation reflection phase microscopy, a light-based imaging technique that applies a dispersed field of light speckles over a target. Concentrated wide beams of light can damage the delicate butterfly wing cells—but this method creates detailed, three-dimensional maps of the scales without that residual damage. Co-author and biological engineer Peter So compared speckle field microscopy to “thousands of fireflies that generate a field of illumination points.”
Thanks to their high resolution imaging, the scientists found that butterfly scale cells quickly lined up in rows within days of the chrysalis forming. The cells developed into cover scales, which lie on top of the wing, or ground scales, which grow underneath. As the cells continued to grow, the research team expected each cell to wrinkle and compress, like an accordion. Instead, each cell developed a sort of waviness, like the corrugation on a metal roof.

The authors hope to investigate the mechanism of that corrugation further, seeking to use butterfly scales as inspiration for the design of new materials.
