Suggested January 2024 Should You Buy An Iphone Now Or Wait For The Iphone 13?

It’s that time of year again — we’re just a week away from the expected introduction of Apple’s flagship iPhone 13 lineup. This year, we’re expecting a focus on camera upgrades, performance improvements, and a smaller notch. With the iPhone 13 looming, should you buy an iPhone now or wait until later this month?

iPhone 13 expectations

As we’ve rounded up in our full guide right here, the iPhone 13 lineup will look quite similar to the iPhone 12. The iPhone 13 lineup is expected to include the iPhone 13 mini with a 5.4-inch display, the iPhone 13 with a 6.1-inch display, the iPhone 13 Pro with a 6.1-inch display, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max with a 6.7-inch display.

On the high-end iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, Apple is rumored to introduce a new always-on display similar to the Apple Watch, as well as a ProMotion display. This will enable refresh rates up to 120Hz, similar to the iPad Pro. The notch cutout within the display is also expected to get smaller this year. According to reports, the iPhone 13 will feature around a 30% reduction in size in terms of width.

Another focus this year is expected to be on the camera, particularly for the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. For the former, this includes things like the wide lens with sensor-shift stabilization. Last year, Apple included better stabilization and 2.5x optical zoom only on iPhone 12 Pro Max.

For the full details on what to expect from the iPhone 13 lineup, check out our full roundup of the latest rumors right here.

What will the iPhone lineup look like after the iPhone 13 is introduced?

While Apple used to keep a relatively straightforward iPhone lineup, things are more complex nowadays, and it’s unclear which iPhone models might stick around following the introduction of the iPhone 13.

Here’s what Apple’s iPhone lineup looks like today:

Following the introduction of the iPhone 13, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will almost certainly be discontinued. The standard iPhone 12 could stick around at a lower price point, while the iPhone 11 could move down into the iPhone XR price point.

Buy now or wait?

Every September, 9to5Mac gets inundated by people asking whether or not they should buy the previous year’s iPhone model or wait to see what Apple has in store for September. Even if you don’t care about the new tech coming in that year’s new iPhone, the answer is always clear: wait.

Even if you wait a month for the iPhone 13 but still end up buying an older model, you’ll be glad you waited. Following the introduction of the iPhone 13, older iPhones — directly from Apple and from third parties — will get cheaper. As always, August is the worst month of the year to buy a new iPhone, even if you don’t end up the latest and greatest.

Heading into the holiday season, be sure to keep an eye on 9to5Toys for details on iPhone sales — we’ll likely see discounts sooner rather than later on last year’s models.

Why You Should Wait For The Iphone 5

I was wrong about the iPhone 4s. I said it would be great. I predicted it would be the best phone ever built. The truth, it turns out, is that the iPhone 4s kind of sucks.

There. I said it.

And I might be wrong again with the headline for this column. I don’t have much faith in Apple to get it right for the upcoming iPhone 5, either. The iPhone 4s has shaken my confidence in Apple’s legendary ability to bang out hit after hit.

My confident, bullish prediction about the iPhone 4s was based on Apple consistently improving on each new iPhone upgrade, and on the company’s stellar achievement in getting the iPad so right the first time, and so super-right the second time.

The iPhone 4s is the first stumble by Apple since the company launched the original iPhone in chúng tôi me, there’s only one reason to buy and own an iPhone 4s: Siri.

Apple’s Siri voice-based virtual assistant technology is flawed, but well worth it. More on that below. First, let me tell you why the iPhone 4s isn’t the phone Apple said it would be at their October 4 launch.

The iPhone 4s should be a better phone than the iPhone 4. Looking at the specs, and the list of new features and capabilities, it should be everything the iPhone is, plus better, faster and easier to use.

Some aspects of the iPhone are better. Siri is very useful. Some of the accessibility features are fantastic, even for people without disabilities.

Beyond that, the phone is harder and more annoying to use than the iPhone 4 was. Here’s why.

I haven’t run objective tests, but I do have some “anecdata” for you: It feels like it has half the battery life of the previous phone. Personally, I can’t get through an entire day without charging it.

Again, this is unscientific, but the battery problems appear to be caused primarily by iOS 5. The reason I say this is that my wife installed the upgrade on her iPhone 4, and that phone also took a huge hit in battery life.

Other reasons are likely to be that Siri is always loaded and ready and battery consuming when you use it. Find My Friends, which is Apple’s Latitude-like family-and-friend stalker application, is constantly hitting the network.

These are all nice features. But being able to turn the phone on is also a feature, one that becomes unavailable when the battery dies. The battery life creates problems for iPhone 4s users.

The camera was supposed to be great, the best camera in any cell phone. Sometimes it is. But usually, it’s not.

That last bit, the “reduced motion blur” is flat-out wrong. Apple claims that because they say the camera has image stabilization. But this feature is undetectable in real life.

If you’re outside on a sunny day, or are taking pictures of subjects that aren’t moving, the iPhone 4s takes really great pictures. But reduce the light even slightly, and with your subject in any kind of motion, and your pictures will be so blurry you’ll simply delete them.

Most of the pictures I take with this phone are unusable because of motion blur. I can’t detect any image stabilization in videos, either.

I took better pictures, on average, with the camera in the iPhone 4.

The yellow is turned way up. As a result, the screen is unappealing to look at. Blues look greenish. The overall appearance of the screen is somewhat nauseating to look at.

Some say the problem affects mostly black phones, and not white ones.

When I put my old iPhone 4 next to a new black 4s as well as a white one, it was clear that the white 4s was a little too yellow, and the black 4s was way too yellow. It was also clear that the iPhone 4 screen has much better color than the new phones.

You expect improvements with new phones, not regression. But that’s what you get with the iPhone 4s — especially the black one — a reduction in screen quality.

Personally, I intend to exchange my black iPhone 4s for a white one.

Top 4 Reasons To Not Buy The Upcoming Iphone 13 Series

1. Screen Refresh Rate

Over the past few years, Android flagship smartphones have been using a 120Hz refresh rate display. Unfortunately, the iPhone 12 still comes with the old 60Hz refresh rate. Thankfully, the iPhone 13 series will come with a 120Hz refresh rate but there is a catch. Only the iPhone 13 Pro Max will support up to a 120Hz refresh rate. The rest of the series will continue to use the regular old 60Hz refresh rate display.

The screen refresh rate has always been an important criterion for measuring the quality of a mobile phone screen. Simply put, the higher the refresh rate, the more frames can be displayed in 1 second. Sometimes, you may observe that the display on the demo video of a new TV is more immersive than the TV you watch at home. This is because the frame rate of the demo video is higher. Similarly, the higher the refresh rate of the smartphone, the smoother it will be when using it, providing users with a better visual experience and reducing eye fatigue.

A high screen refresh rate is currently a feature that almost every Android phone has. As early as 2023, Sharp released the Sharp AQUOS R that supports a 120Hz refresh rate. In 2023, Android had the OnePlus 7 with 90Hz screen refresh rate. At present, the screen refresh rate of Android flagships is basically 120Hz. The highest, Nubia Red Magic 6 Pro can even reach as high as 165Hz, and the screen is smooth and has no smear.

But looking back at the iPhone, it has always been a point of regret for fans. This time the iPhone 13 series is finally going to have a 120Hz refresh rate but then tragedy struck. Only the Pro Max model will have this feature.

2. Design remains the same – just a smaller notch

After the official launch of the iPhone 12 series, complaints about its “notch”-style front camera module continued. The look and feel of a large black bar above the display is not good. On the other hand, in the Android camp, in recent years, the front camera module of mobile phones has gradually evolved from a notch screen to a waterdrop screen, a pop-up, and most recently, an under-screen camera. The screen-to-body ratio is getting higher, and the sense of unity on the front of the phone is getting more fulfilling.

From the leaks and speculations so far, the iPhone 13 notch is smaller. However, this is not entirely enough for a 2023 flagship series. Apple has been using the notch design since the 2023 iPhone X. This shows that there has been no upgrade in the display design for three years. If we add the iPhone 13 series, the display design remains technically the same for four years. In contrast, within these four years, the Android camp has over four solutions.

The “FaceID” function brought by the dot-matrix projector, infrared lens, and the front camera lens is indeed very practical. However, the microphone, ambient light sensor, and other components do not need to be integrated on the top at all.

3. Fast charging capacity, only 25W – Apple is too cautious

As early as 2014, Oppo Find 7 series adopted its exclusive VOOC flash charging technology for the first time. The output of the charger increased to the level of 5V 4.5A, and it took less than half an hour to charge the phone to about 70%. In the current Android smartphone market, it has become the norm for flagship phones of various brands to use 67W fast charging and above fast. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 4 comes with a 120W wired charging + 50W wireless flash charging configuration. This smartphone gets a full charge of its 4500 mAh battery in 15 minutes. The wireless charging gives a full charge in 28 minutes.

However, the iPhone 13 will increase the battery capacity and fast charging rating. The battery capacity of the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro could be 3095 mAh. This is less than 10% higher than the battery capacity of the iPhone 12. The iPhone 13 Pro Max will get a 4352 mAh battery but the charging power is only 25W. This is a 5W increase from the iPhone 12’s 20W charging.

In general, although the iPhone 13 series has gradually increased the battery capacity, the charging speed of 25W is not enough relative to what is currently obtainable in the smartphone market.

4. Slightly expensive

Pricing has always been a down point for iPhones. Thankfully, the company has its loyal fans that are ready to break the bank for a new iPhone. According to reports, the starting price of the iPhone 13 series is similar to the iPhone 12 series. However, the storage capacity does not have the popular 256GB option for the Pro model. For the low-end models, there is no 64GB storage option, the lowest is 128GB.

In terms of RAM, the iPhone 13 and 13 mini has 4GB capacity while the Pro models have 6GB. However, thanks to the iOS system mechanism, the impact of memory upgrades on performance is not obvious. .

Relatively speaking, Android camp models have a very wide range of options. The latest flagships have all levels of RAM as well as internal storage. This device may appear cheap on the lower end, but the iPhone 13 Pro Max will exceed $2000 which is quite expensive.

Summary

Generally speaking, although the iPhone 13 series has indeed made a couple of upgrades, it is unfortunate that only the iPhone 13 Pro Max has a 120Hz refresh rate that users are most concerned about. Potential buyers will have to look at what they really need before purchasing the iPhone 13.

Iphone 13 Diary: I’m Now Resigned To Buying A New Iphone Every Year

There were a lot of people buying a new iPhone on Friday, and I was one of them, despite saying that I didn’t consider it an especially exciting update for most people.

But for me, I’m upgrading to the iPhone 13 for the same reason I bought the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12.

Camera improvements

For years, I said that my iPhone was my least-important Apple gadget. The Mac came first, iPad second, and iPhone third. But iPhone cameras have improved so dramatically over the past few years that the iPhone is now undeniably my primary camera – and that makes it a way more important device.

That process began with the iPhone X, where the low-light performance started to catch up with the daylight performance. It wasn’t there yet, but the writing was already on the wall.

This is an absolutely remarkable performance. I’d have had trouble believing that it really was an iPhone shot had I not taken it myself. I could have gotten a marginally better one with my Sony a6300 (side-by-side comparisons to follow in a future piece), but really this is absolutely good enough.

All in all, I’d say the iPhone X is easily $500-600’s worth of camera. So consider you’re buying that plus an iPhone costing the same amount.

By the iPhone 11 Pro, the low-light performance was good enough to become my only camera for social photography – capturing memories of nights out and the like.

I still want decent quality images, though. I want everything to be in focus, I want accurate colors, I want a decent amount of shadow and highlight detail — and I don’t want great globs of noise in night shots […]

There was a time when I would have taken my Sony camera on an evening like this, but those days are definitely past. The iPhone 11 Pro camera is perfectly good enough for this type of casual photography.

Indeed, I even used it as a travel camera, and didn’t feel I had to compromise when using it to capture what I very much hope will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

My iPhone 12 Pro Max added Night mode portraits, which is a game-changer when it comes to photographing people in low light.

If you want to get a sense of how insanely good Night mode portraits are, take a look at the photo below, which I took almost exactly 10 years ago. That took a professional DSLR, two flashguns, three radio transceivers, two gels, two soft boxes, a lightstand, and about half an hour of setup; today, I can get close to the same result in about 20 seconds with an iPhone and a streetlight… That’s nuts.

Now the iPhone 13 is adding Night mode to the telephoto lens; wider apertures, for even better low-light photos; Photographic Styles; ProRes (later); and Cinematic Mode videos. I can’t wait to try it.

A cynic might suggest that Apple is deliberately holding back features for the next generation. Cinematic Mode, for example, is limited to 1080p in the iPhone 13. It’s a safe bet that the iPhone 14 will extend this to 4K.

A less cynical person would argue that Cinematic Mode involves taking 30 Portrait mode photos every second, plus adding AI processing on top of that to decide what should be in focus by default, and that this is incredibly demanding of processing power – so it may well genuinely be the case that the A15 chip isn’t able to do that in 4K.

Either way, however, if Cinematic Mode works as well as Apple claims, and I’m right that we’ll get it in 4K next year, that would already be enough reason to buy.

So where my iPhone buying was once intermittent, it’s clear now that it will be annual.

Something else is clear: As someone who once wanted iPhones to be as small as possible, I’m now a convert to giant phones. My iPhone 12 Pro Max, which seemed comically large when I got it, now looks normal to me. Yes, it involves some compromises – like a belt holster when cycling – but that large screen is a fantastic viewfinder, and using the large screen for other things means I carry my iPad around less. So overall, I’m sold.

Want An Apple Laptop? Here Are The Best Macbooks You Can Buy Right Now

Kris Carlon / Android Authority

If you consider yourself an Apple die-hard, you’re probably not interested in Windows laptops. To that end, you might be saving up for a shiny new MacBook as your next computer. There aren’t too many models to pick from, but there are quite a few specs to weigh out. Here’s our list of the best Macbooks available right now.

See also: The best MacBook deals

Apple keeps things simple with just two lines of laptops: the lighter MacBook Air and the heavy-duty MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro comes in 13-inch, 14-inch, and 16-inch versions as well, and we’ll touch on all three configurations.

The best Macbooks you can buy in 2023

The 16-inch MacBook Pro is the most powerful Apple laptop you can get, with the 2023 refresh making it a no-brainer purchase.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro is the best balanced Apple laptop offering, carrying the goodness of the new Pro lineup in a smaller profile and a lower price tag.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro (M1 Processor) is the cheapest Pro Apple laptop, powered by the M1 chip, and a solid value for money.

The MacBook Air (M1 Processor) is the cheapest Apple laptop out there, with a slim fanless design and great battery life.

The iPad Pro M1 with Magic Keyboard is our honorable mention on this list, being the closest thing to a touchscreen Apple laptop.

Editor’s note: We will regularly update this list of the best Apple laptops as new devices launch.

1. MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2023): The most powerful Apple laptop

Kris Carlon / Android Authority

Apple’s best and biggest laptop got a major refresh in 2023, bringing back some much-needed features that had gone missing from the MacBook Pro for a while. These include more ports, including a full HDMI port, and an SD Card reader. The MacBook Pro 16 is now the most powerful laptop you can buy from Apple, and the most powerful Mac overall, barring the newly introduced Mac Studio.

The 2023 MacBook Pro makes a triumphant return to targeting actual professionals. Almost all of the complaints of recent years have been addressed. Combined with the excellent performance of the new M1 Pro and M1 Max, the MacBook Pro once again lives up to its Pro name… and its Pro price tag.

2. MacBook Pro (14-inch, 2023): The best balanced Apple laptop

Amazon

While the 16-inch MacBook Pro refresh takes the prize for being the beefiest machine on offer, the 14-inch MacBook Pro makes for the perfect balance for most folks. It carries a lot of the goodness of the 16-inch model. On top of that, you even get options between M1 Pro and M1 Max, despite this one being the cheaper, smaller machine. Other than the screen and thus body size, the major difference comes in with the battery size, which is expectedly smaller.

See also: The best Apple MacBook accessories

You get more configurations, though. The M1 Pro models come in three trims: 8-core CPU/14-core GPU, 10-core CPU/14-core GPU, and 10-core CPU/16-core GPU. Memory is limited to 16 or 32GB. The M1 Max has two versions — 10-core CPU/24-core GPU and 10-core CPU/32-core GPU. Memory options for the M1 Max configurations are limited to 32 or 64GB.

The pricing for the 14-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1,999. You can get the decked-out 14-inch model for $5,899.

3. 13-inch MacBook Pro (M1 Processor): The cheapest MacBook Pro laptop

Apple

The 13-inch MacBook Pro is probably the best Apple laptop for most people, especially now that it’s bid Intel adieu. The design itself hasn’t changed much at all, though — you still get the Magic Keyboard, Retina display, and three classy finishes to choose from. The 14-inch model is more or less a replacement for this one, but this 13-inch model is still alive and kicking.

The M1 chip powering this laptop is a stellar offering from the company. Here’s what our own Gary Sims thinks about it.

4. MacBook Air (M1 Processor): The cheapest Apple laptop

Gary Sims / Android Authority

The MacBook Pro steals much of the thunder, but the Air is also ready for action with the Apple M1 chip. Apple just packed Intel hardware into each version of the Air before this. The new M1 chip, however, is an entirely different beast. There are plenty of reasons to choose a MacBook Air — the slim wedge design, leaving the temperamental Touch Bar in the dust, and even the 100% recycled aluminum body.

The M1 MacBook Air is the perfect Apple laptop for anyone who loves the Apple ecosystem and isn’t a “power user”. I’ve been using it 8-10 hours a day for over a year and haven’t seen as much as a hiccup. The battery lasts all day, and MacOS is as sleek as ever. I can participate in Zoom meetings with 18 Chrome tabs open without the device catching fire. Unless you truly need the beefed-up specs of the MacBook Pro, the M1 MacBook Air is everything you need and then some.

The M1 MacBook Air relies on 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD at the base configuration, along with the lovable Magic Keyboard. If you’re looking to splurge but don’t want to go for the Pro, you can boost both the storage and RAM. Although, there’s no alternative to the M1 chip for performance. Apple’s new design is fanless as well, so you can work through tasks in blissful silence.

The MacBook Air starts at $999. You can spec it up to cost as much as $2,049.

5. honorable mention: iPad Pro M1 with Magic Keyboard (11 or 12.9-inch)

Unfortunately, our previous honorable mention, the 12-inch MacBook, is no longer available. However, if none of the MacBooks in this list caught your fancy, you may want to take a look at the iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard combination. Granted, the limitations of iPad OS still cripple this combination. However, with the Magic Keyboard and the M1 powering the iPad Pro, this is the closest an iPad has come to being an Apple laptop.
