There’s A Secret Way To Browse The Web From Your Apple Watch

Have a look through the apps on your Apple Watch and you won’t find the Safari web browser. This seems like a reasonable choice considering the small size of the screen and the limited input options.

But if you need to get a webpage up on your smartwatch, know that it is possible. There’s a hidden browser app already on the watch, and you’ll also find a couple of third-party options available to install.

A warning, though—You’ll definitely come up against limitations and the experience is nowhere as good as it is on a phone or a laptop.

Using the built-in Apple Watch browser

You can’t launch the web browser built into the Apple Watch from the standard grid or list of apps. Instead, you’ll have to access it by opening up a link from another smartwatch app. You can use the Mail and Messages apps for this, and all you have to do is send yourself an email or message containing the URL that you want to visit.

[Related: Apple Watch Series 7 Review: Living Larger]

This might seem like a long-winded way of getting online—and it is, really. But just in case you ever need it, you can make things easier by emailing yourself a list with the websites you regularly need access to, for example.

When it comes to entering text into websites, you can use the usual methods available on your watch, including voice dictation, the scribble handwriting feature, and the on-screen keyboard. It’s not ideal for entering large amounts of text, but it’ll do if you need to search for a few keywords, for example.

Bear in mind that not all websites will load properly (or even at all) on such a tiny screen, and it can be difficult navigating around menus and pop-up dialogs. In some cases, the built-in browser will switch to a simpler view, like the Reader View in Safari on the desktop, so you’ll just get the text and nothing else. Tap on the URL at the top to switch between these views.

Using third-party programs

The built-in web browser on the Apple Watch is probably your best bet when it comes to loading up webpages, as Apple has access to parts of the smartwatch’s code that third-party apps can’t get to. Nevertheless, if you want a more fully-fledged experience, you’ve got options.

[Related: How to navigate your Apple Watch with hand gestures using AssistiveTouch]

First up is the free Parrity app, which actually uses a connected iPhone to load and render pages before transferring the results over to your Apple Watch. You can still interact with pages on your wrist, enter new URLs, and even go back on your browsing history, but your iPhone will always need to be around for anything to happen.

Then there’s µBrowser, which will set you back $1. This works entirely independently on the watch and does a very decent job of rendering websites, albeit with some issues (support for multiple fonts is rather limited, for example). You can search the web, enter URLs, and go back to pages that you’ve recently visited.

The Sun Can Help Break Down Ocean Plastic, But There’s A Catch

What if the plastic in the ocean could burn itself up?

This thought might not be too far from the truth. A recent study in the Journal of Hazardous Materials found that when four different types of post-consumer microplastics collected from the waters of the North Pacific Gyre were placed under a solar simulator, they dissolved into organic carbon.

Currently, scientists predict that 5 trillion plastic items, most of which are teensy microplastics, are currently floating around in the world’s oceans, weighing over 250,000 tons. Still, researchers have estimated that the plastic found at the surface of the sea is only around one percent of the plastic that has gone into the oceans.

However, the plastics on the surface are unique in that they are exposed to sunlight. And, since plastics are made of polymers of carbon, that sunlight breaks down larger plastics into carbon over time, says Aron Stubbins, an author of the study and professor of marine sciences and engineering at Northeastern University.

This dissolved organic carbon was then, for the most part, munched up by marine bacteria in the water, which then likely converting it to carbon dioxide.

“They just see it as another food source,” Stubbins says.

To Stubbins, it looks like the way plastic can do the most harm is with large pieces, since they can end up in the stomachs of marine life and seagulls far before the sun can convert them into carbon.

The trouble, he says, is not so much on what they might release into the ecosystem but rather their physical presence in the water. “It’s more that they’re a physical nuisance, whether that’s to us as an eyesore and a reminder of the damage that they are doing to the planet, and to other organisms that might mistakenly eat them,” Stubbins says. “It’s more that they are a physical pollutant, in that sense, rather than a chemical pollutant.”

Collin Ward, a chemist with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution who was not involved in the study, says this study adds to the growing knowledge that plastics may not be as persistent in the environment as we first thought. Right now, we just assume that plastic in the environment just hangs out forever, he says, but this study shows that might not be the case.

It might be a bit of a jump to start thinking about how this new knowledge might impact cleaning up the ocean in the future, Ward says.

“But going down this path, once more and more work is done, and we find out how general these findings are, we ultimately can think about incorporating this kind of information into models that would optimize clean-up operations,” Ward says.

While most of the dissolved microplastics just meant more food for microbes, one of the four plastics tested in the study actually harmed the bacteria. Stubbins says he’s not sure if it killed them off or inhibited their growth. Still, they definitely were knocked off their track compared to the same bacteria in plain seawater.

There are lots of different ways to make plastic, so of course, there is potential for some types to cause harm in their dissolved form. It’ll take a bit more investigation to see how prevalent this unpleasant side effect is, Stubbins says.

“In some ways, it’s a relief that certain materials don’t last forever in the environment, but on the flip side, we have to exercise caution about the impacts of these transformation products,” Ward says.

Still, even if most of the microbes in this study were okay with dissolved carbon from plastic, we don’t really know how the dissolved carbon affects larger organisms’ health.

Not to mention, there’s a lot of plastic in the world, say the bits that end up a river, that exist in more significant concentrations than the ocean, Stubbins says. The ocean is enormous. So when sunlight breaks down the plastic, the byproducts of those chemical reactions are far more diluted in the sea than they would be in smaller water sources, such as rivers or streams.

“In those places, it may be of more concern if there are contaminants being released as they degrade,” Stubbins says. “The greater concentrations of plastic that there are, the greater the concentration of pollutants there would be. A greater concentration could cause more harm locally.”

Some next steps for Stubbins are looking deeper into the timeline of the breakdown of plastics—how long it takes, what the drivers are, and how chemistry and the size of the materials each play a role.

FACT: These insects have a pee-related superpower

By Rachel Feltman

Glassy-winged sharpshooters aren’t exactly the most lovable bugs. They’ve got wiggly abdomens that they use to make vibrations to communicate when it’s time to mate, bulbous eyes, and red-veined wings. They’re also considered pests: when they and other sharpshooters feed off of grapevines, they leave a bacterium called Xylella fastidiosa behind that causes leaves to yellow and wither with a condition known as Pierce’s disease. That plague can wipe out more than half of a vineyard’s vines in a single outbreak, and is estimated to cost $100 million in lost grapevines and mitigation efforts in California alone. And unlike the blue-green sharpshooter that tends to spread the disease most in Napa and Sonoma counties and along the coast, the glassy-winged sharpshooter, which causes trouble in Southern California, is invasive—it likely came over from its natural habitat in the southeastern US on the back of a nursery plant in the early 1990s.

But in addition to posing a threat to the wine industry, glassy-winged sharpshooters pose a more immediate threat to any humans who happen to pass by them: The threat of being sprayed with a constant mist of bug urine.

Learn more about the super-powered urinary capabilities of these insects by listening to this week’s episode—or by hopping on over to this article about the prolific pee-ers.

FACT: A fear of clowns may stem from the makeup itself

By Chelsey B. Coombs

Despite the cultural cache that a fear of clowns holds, and the fact that it’s super common for pop culture to reference it, there hasn’t been much academic research on the fear of clowns.

So the authors of a new study from the International Journal of Mental Health decided to examine the fear of clowns in an international population with the appropriately named “Fear of Clowns Questionnaire,” which was adapted from the “Fear of Spiders Questionnaire.”

Out of 927 participants, 27% said they had a fear of clowns, with 5% saying they were extremely afraid of clowns. More women reported that they were afraid of clowns and they had a more extreme fear of clowns than men, which actually follows a similar pattern in phobias just generally.

The strongest factor the researchers found causing people’s fear of clowns was that a clown’s makeup keeps people guessing at what their actual intentions are. They may have a permanently happy face, but that conceals whether they’re angry or upset, so the authors believe that being unable to know what a clown is really thinking or what they might do puts us on edge.

FACT: In the 18th Century, toilets were not just for poop

By Melissa Dunphy

We’ve all come across signs in toilets begging us not to flush anything other than waste and sewer-safe toilet paper for fear of clogging or damaging plumbing. But before modern sewer systems, no such rules applied. Colonial Americans who used privy pits—shafts dug into the ground beneath an outhouse—tossed all kinds of trash into the depths along with their sewage. Wine bottles, kitchen waste, unwanted ceramic plates and bowls, old buttons, toys, cannon balls, smoking pipes, waste from cottage industries such as tanning and metalwork, and anything else they needed to get rid of from their households often ended up down the toilet hole, since in addition to lacking sewage pipes, they also lacked the convenience of modern trash collection. If, for example, your horse died while you were too busy to find a better means of disposal, you might simply heave it into the privy instead. It certainly couldn’t have made the smell any worse.

During this time period, specialists known as nightsoil men were paid to manually clean out privies every now and then, but after sewer systems came along, many privies were simply filled in, trash intact. Modern archaeologists especially value these privy pits as rich time capsules that provide fascinating snapshots into the everyday lives of the people who once used them, demonstrating that just about any trash will become treasure if you wait long enough.
