HR software can be valuable and efficient in enhancing employee confidence in company processes and integrity. In this regard, you can expect an improved work environment and fairness that retains talent, boosts morale, and improves productivity. The world is currently facing challenges in waste management due to rapid population growth and urbanization, leading to an increase in waste generation. The World Bank reports that the world produces 2.01 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste annually, and at least 33% of it is not processed in an environmentally friendly way. On average, a person generates 0.74 kilos of garbage per day, with high-income nations accounting for 34% of the world’s waste despite making up only 16% of the population.
Waste management involves waste collection, transportation, treatment, and disposal, all of which require substantial investments in infrastructure and changes in behavior and policies. These activities demand appropriate infrastructure, such as waste collection vehicles, treatment facilities, and landfill sites, which can be expensive to build and maintain. This can be politically challenging, particularly in countries where there are competing priorities for limited resources.How Recycling Startups Implement AI
According to Statista’s report, in 2023, the market value of global waste recycling services was $55.1 billion. This market is expected to experience significant growth in the future due to rising consumer awareness about the environmental consequences of waste. By 2028, the global waste recycling services market is anticipated to attain an estimated value of nearly $90 billion, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.8% predicted during the forecast period of 2023 to 2030.
AI technology will undoubtedly play a role. Recycling startups implement AI in various ways, here are some examples:
Using AI-powered sensors and cameras to sort waste more efficiently. Machine learning algorithms can analyze images of waste and identify different materials, such as paper, plastic, and metal. This can help improve recycling rates and reduce contamination.
For example, MobiDev company created an AI-based mobile app for recycling. The app uses AI algorithms to detect the waste type and give recycling recommendations. This solution helps people to sort waste properly.
CleanRobotics uses AI to identify and sort recyclable materials from waste. The company’s flagship product, the TrashBot, is a smart waste bin that uses AI to separate trash from recyclables.
Since recycling equipment is generally expensive and breakdowns can be costly, artificial intelligence can be used to monitor equipment performance in real-time and predict when maintenance is needed.
Greyparrot, the UK-based startup uses AI to monitor waste sorting equipment and predict maintenance needs. The company’s software can detect issues in real-time and alert facility managers to potential problems, reducing the risk of equipment failure. This helps them to reduce downtime and save money on repairs.
Recycling startups can use AI to forecast demand for recycled materials. This can help them plan their operations more effectively and avoid over- or under-producing recycled materials.
Bin-e is a Polish startup that uses AI to analyze waste streams and identify opportunities for recycling. Designed for use in public areas, Bin-e is a smart waste bin that utilizes AI technology to streamline the process of recycling. The bin automatically sorts and compresses waste monitors its fill level and collects data to facilitate efficient waste management.
Recycling startups can use AI to optimize their collection and transportation routes. This can help reduce fuel consumption and lower emissions. For example, the US-based Rubicon company uses AI software that can analyze data on waste generation and recycling rates to create efficient routes for its trucks.
Human teenagers aren’t exactly known for their restraint. An incompletely developed region of the brain called the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), which acts a bit like a parking break, can make adolescents more likely to engage in risky behaviors including reckless driving, substance abuse, and risky sexual behavior. It turns out, the same can be said for adolescent chimpanzees, except reckless behaviors for them may look more like increased aggression.
A study published January 23 by the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General from the American Psychological Association finds that while chimps and teens share these risk-taking behaviors, the chimpanzees may be may be less impulsive.

“Adolescent chimpanzees are in some sense facing the same psychological tempest that human teens are,” said co-author Alexandra Rosati, an associate professor of psychology and anthropology at the University of Michigan, in a statement. “Our findings show that several key features of human adolescent psychology are also seen in our closest primate relatives.”
Chimpanzees can live up to age 50 and their adolescence occurs from around age eight up to 15. Chimpanzees show rapid changes in hormone levels during adolescence, form new bonds with their peers, demonstrate some increases in aggression, and compete for social status just like their human counterparts.
In the study, the team of researchers performed two tests using food rewards on 40 wild-born chimpanzees at Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Sanctuary in the Republic of Congo in central Africa. It included 21 males and 19 females from six to 25 years-old and an average age of 15.
During test number one, adults and adolescent chimpanzees performed a gambling task and could choose between two containers. One of the containers always had peanuts, which chimpanzees somewhat like. The other had either a disliked snack (a cucumber slice) or their favorite, a banana slice. They had a choice between playing it safe and getting some the sort of delicious peanuts, or take a chance at getting the coveted banana with the risk of getting a yucky cucumber.
The team recorded the chimpanzees’ vocalizations and emotional reactions, including moans, screams, whimpers, banging on the table, or scratching themselves. To track hormone levels, they also collected saliva samples.
Adolescent chimpanzees took the risky option more often than the adults, but both expressed negative reactions if they got the cucumber.
Test number two was modeled after the famous Stanford marshmallow experiment performed on human children to examine delayed gratification. The chimpanzees could either get one banana slice immediately or wait for 60 seconds to receive three tasty banana slices.

Adult and adolescent chimpanzees both chose to delay gratification at a similar rate. In this situation, human teens tend to be more impulsive than adults and would more likely chose the instant gratification.
“Prior research indicates that chimpanzees are quite patient compared with other animals, and our study shows that their ability to delay gratification is already mature at a fairly young age, unlike in humans,” said Rosati.
What did separate the adolescent chimpanzees from the adults is that they threw more tantrums during the delay than the adults did.
According to Rosati, risk-taking behavior in both adolescent humans and chimpanzees appears to be biologically ingrained, but also certain increases in impulsive behavior may be more of a human thing. Additionally, future studies could look into differences in impulsive behaviors in male and female chimpanzees.
“We are currently looking at the development of several other cognitive abilities in chimpanzees, including capacities for self-regulation and the emergence of social skills that help chimpanzees form and maintain relationships,” Rosati told PopSci in an email.

Fans of “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” “Doctor Who,” “Star Trek” and other multi-lingual sci-fi universes will be familiar with the idea of real-time translation devices. It’s not science fiction anymore, though: using a machine learning technique called Neural Machine Translation, Google Translate can now predict how likely it is that someone is saying a certain sequence of words, enabling them to process and deliver translations to you while someone is talking. For now you need Google Assistant-enabled headphones and an Android phone to make it work, but now that the technology is out there, your own personal babel fish isn’t far.Smart contact lenses
The idea behind Google Glass, integrating our technology with our in-the-minute visual experience, wasn’t bad. The execution wasn’t so great, though, which is why some companies, like Mojo Vision, believe a contact lens with a display directly on your eye might be more interesting for people. The smartest contact lens we’ve gotten so far has been an on-again-off-again project to monitor glucose levels for diabetics, but it’s worth keeping an eye on this technology. Or, more accurately, keeping this technology on your eye. This is the sort of device that augmented reality really needs before it can take off.Implanting new senses
Getting an RFID chip implanted is a good first step towards going cyborg, but if that’s just not enough of an upgrade, why not get a whole new physical sense? CyborgNest makes a sensor called “The North Sense” that works pretty simply: it gets attached to you by running two small titanium rods under your skin, and whenever you face north, it vibrates. Want to sense magnetic fields? Get some tiny magnets put in your fingers (seems that it is easy to become Magneto in the X-Men). Another idea, not yet commercially available, is wearing a vibrating vest that constantly feeds you patterns of information — everything from stock markets to human speech. The philosophy behind it is that if we can expand our perceptions of the world around us through technology, why not?Enhanced hearing
In a similar vein are hearing aids for people who don’t have major hearing problems, like Nuheara. Our ears work pretty well, but they miss a lot, too, and we can’t really adjust them to our exact specifications. These wireless earbuds let you blend the sound however you want: turn down the background noise and turn up conversation, blend your music with noise from the outside world, and do whatever else you feel like with the noise around you. That’s pretty cyborg.Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs)
You can’t really get these off the shelf yet, but BCIs are sort of the pinnacle of cyborg-ness. The most common applications are to help people with disabilities, such as those who are paralyzed, blind, or otherwise incapacitated, but all that research into controlling wheelchairs, exoskeletons, and computers with your mind has a very wide range of possible uses. Some are working on reading human thoughts and memories, while others could possibly facilitate direct brain-to-brain communication. Kernel and Elon Musk’s Neuralink are hoping to develop a direct line of communication between the human brain and AI in an upload/download sort of system, enabling us to literally increase our brain’s computing power.
If you’re thinking, “This could go badly,” you’re definitely right. What if you could hack into someone’s brain or develop some kind of malware for it? What happens when the information inside your head can be taken out? The potential benefits are amazing, but it’s a highly sensitive area and will need to be handled with a lot of care.Resistance is futile. The singularity is inevitable.
Sometime in the future, there realistically might be a time where the line between human and machine is blurred to the point where we don’t know where one ends and the other begins. That change isn’t going to happen all at once, though. Even if the technology currently existed, there would be massive practical and ethical questions we would have to ask and new norms we have to create. Will governments in the future chip and track their citizens? Will companies sponsor your augmented-reality mirror world and shape what you see? Will brains be as hackable as computers? Humanity’s cyborg journey has already begun, and regardless of whether you want to join in, we’ll have a lot of interesting questions to answer as a species.

A full decade after she first launched a business from her kitchen table, Dune Jewelry & Co. CEO Holly Daniels Christensen found herself back there starting in 2023. But since then, she has been connecting directly with thousands of customers from afar, via their mobile devices.
In her “Kitchen Table Talks,” a series of Facebook Live video discussions, Christensen has chatted with other fashion, luxury, and style experts on how to look and feel your best, even from a distance. “I’ve had customers send private messages talking about what a hard time they’ve been having,” says Christensen. “[Kitchen Table Talks] have really helped some of the people who are anxiety-ridden take their mind off things.”
National Small Business Week is the perfect occasion to spotlight a company like Dune Jewelry & Co., whose team is about 30 people strong. Their jewelry incorporates sand and earth elements from thousands of memorable and iconic locations around the world.
“Even if they’ve ordered from us two or three different times, customers might not realize they can use sand from their honeymoon or flowers from their wedding in a piece of jewelry,” she explains. “We’re focused on opening up people’s creativity and helping them be creators of their own jewelry.”
Associates can of course walk customers through their options in-store, but they can also connect online via a chat box on the Dune website. On the back end, Christensen is upgrading Dune’s e-commerce platform to allow for greater personalization. She also deployed a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform that helps automate Dune’s customer service operations. Like most cloud-based tools, the SaaS platform allows the team to monitor business operations from their laptop or smartphone, even while they’re off-site.
